Our journey in the Digithon marathon ends. What did we learn? That Italy is made up of young talents who want to get involved and believe in their dreams. That in reality there is not just one winner, but we are all winners. That you can always learn from others even from those who are smaller than you. Age is just a number; counts the "head" of people. That dialogue and confrontation opens your mind to new horizons. That you must never give up and defeat helps to grow. Which, as the slogan says, "The future is me" ... I would fix the slogan in "The future is us". Already ... the future is each of us who, through their actions, makes the territory better, brings innovation and develops it.   We are the future, we are Italy! Si conclude il nostro viaggio nella maratona Digithon. Cosa abbiamo imparato? Che l'Italia è formata da giovani talenti che vogliono mettersi in gioco e credono nei loro sogni. Che in realtà non c'è un solo vincitore, ma siamo tutti vincitori. Che si può sempre imparare dagli altri anche da chi è più piccolo di te. L'età è solo un numero; conta "la testa" delle persone. Che il dialogo ed il confronto ti apre la mente verso nuovi orizzonti. Che non bisogna mai mollare e la sconfitta aiuta a crescere. Che, come dice lo slogan, "Il futuro sono io"...io aggiusterei lo slogan in "Il futuro siamo noi". After a cancelled theater screening, one preorder for July cancelled, and the next preorder not set to arrive until October, I finally broke down and watched Kizuna.

So.

Like.

Hey.

Ya know how I never really cared for the 02 epilogue?

Yeah.

That’s not what I meant.

Like... I did like Kizuna? I would be lying if I said I didn’t. Yamato is fantastic in it (which I would hope so considering really only he and Taichi do anything worthwhile, which was a bit sad), and the emotional beats tended to work pretty well, but...

...I just really, really hate the idea that the kids can’t be with their partners anymore simply because they grew up.

I knew this was the premise going in, but I was trying to be optimistic. After all, they were going out of their way to include the 02 kids, and 02 actually has a future epilogue already built in so it would be weird to just... pretend it doesn’t exist, right? As in, like, in actual, factual canon? Where it does, in fact, for real, exist? Even Tri made sure to reference 02, even if very, very little, because it is still canon (as messy and plot-hole-filled as it is). So my hope was that SOMETHING would be done about this. Like, maybe the digimon couldn’t take physical form for very long anymore or something. Or maybe the kids proved that growing up doesn’t mean you can’t still have a bond with things from your childhood.

In fact, while I actually managed to avoid most spoilers, I did happen to see the Japanese packaging for the BR which had new forms of Gabumon and Agumon on it. Seeing as they looked more human, I thought maybe these would be hybrid forms, and Taichi and Yamato would evolve together with them, and THAT would create a link allowing them to stay together or a something. But no. It was just new (ugly) forms so they could beat the last bad guy.

I liked what we saw of the characters. Yamato’s stint as a “detective” of sorts was great. Taichi felt like the perfect balance between Adventure’s hot-blooded protag and Tri’s more thoughtful approach. I liked the animation. I liked all the outfit changes, lol. I liked that it made me feel because I’m a sucker for that.

But I will never like the overall message this seems to send.

Why?

I just turned 37.

I still love Digimon 20+ years after first staying home from school, sick, deciding to watch “that Pokemon rip off show” on a whim because it was on, catching most of the Myotismon arc as part of a special “Digithon”, and becoming hopelessly hooked by the characters and story, doing everything I could to find out what happened after Myotismon was killed, the fog still in place.

I jumped on at a later age than most, and I have stayed on this whole time, even if my feelings on individual iterations have fluctuated greatly. At this point I think it’s safe to say I’ll still be enjoying Digimon as a wrinkled, old lady.

Should I “grow up” and stop liking it? Does my age determine whether or not I’m “allowed” to indulge myself by buying a Yamato/Garurumon figurine that not only didn’t exist when I was younger but was far out of my price range? Does it mean I shouldn’t encourage my nephews to watch it with me?

Maybe this is taking it to the overdramatic extreme, but, honestly, if I, a real life flesh-and-blood person is being encouraged to indulge in my childhood by them putting out 6 Tri movies, Kizuna, and a new reboot using characters based on the ones I grew up loving, then why can’t the fictional Digidestined be allowed to stay with their best friends?

I will enjoy Kizuna for the good bits.

But the 02 epilogue was canon first, and much as I might have problems with some of it, that is the ending I will always think of for my favorite nostalgic anime. Yamato and Gabumon hanging out on Mars or the moon or wherever may seem goofy and out of place to me, but, hey, at least they’re actually, physically together.
