I went to a place called Reconsidered Goods today. I was looking for some leather, maybe some yarn, POSSIBLY a drop spindle. I was told to look in a specific cabinet because there were some weaving shuttles in there. I didnt find a drop spindle, but I saw a bag of crochet lace, and what was written on the front made me giddy.
"Crochet lace made from WWII parachute cord. Made by Grandmother Whitmore."
My Grandmother survived, against all odds, 2 camps and eventually made it to the US. She wasnt able to bring much with her but she brought her knowledge of crochet. So I INSTANTLY felt a connection. I didn't open it. I immediately bought it and framed it. Will eventually get a shadow box that fits. Talk about HISTORY!

More progress on my Catwoman whip. I am very happy with it for my first ever whip, first real work with braiding, and working with paracord. The whip is also a lot of fun to play around with and figure out how to get it to crack. While wearing eye protection because safety first. Last thing that if I can get done in time would be great is to make the handle for it. Right now I just have the end cords used to attach one wrapped around the end to sort of finish it.
I must say this was a fun challenge to do and I want to make another one already now that I have done it once. I feel that there are a few mistakes in the braiding near the beginning when I was learning I could correct. Also would use black cording to secure the core instead of using the white I had on hand.

Master Your Craft with the Right Paracord Tool Kit

When it comes to paracord crafting, having the right paracord tool kit can make all the difference between a frustrating experience and a smooth, satisfying one. Whether you're tying a basic survival bracelet or creating an intricate monkey-fist keychain, a comprehensive tool kit streamlines the process, boosts efficiency, and enhances the quality of your finished product. From hobbyists to seasoned survivalists, investing in proper paracord tools ensures each weave, knot, and finish is crafted with precision and ease.
The Most Intuitive Knot-Tying Mandrel
One of the standout tools in any advanced paracord kit is the Mandrel. And not just any mandrel, this Mandrel is one of the easiest, most intuitive knot-tying mandrels ever produced. What sets it apart is its unique design: each Mandrel is etched with step-by-step knotting instructions directly on the surface.
That means no more flipping through confusing books, struggling to follow complex numbering patterns, or dealing with pins that slip and fall mid-project. Gone are the days of printing paper patterns and attempting to fasten them onto a mandrel while hoping everything lines up properly. With this Mandrel, the learning curve is drastically reduced, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced crafters looking for a faster, cleaner workflow.

Essential Components of a Paracord Tool Kit
1. Paracord Needles (Fids)
Paracord needles, often called "fids," are slender, hollow tools that screw onto the end of a melted paracord strand. They allow you to thread the cord cleanly through tight spaces and finished weaves. Available in various sizes and materials, fids are crucial for tasks like splicing, threading through lanyards, or tightening intricate braids. Sets often include multiple needle diameters to accommodate different paracord types (e.g., Type II or Type III).
2. Knotters and Marlinspikes
Knotters also known as marlinspikes are multi-purpose tools designed to loosen or tighten knots with better leverage than your fingers alone can provide. They’re especially handy when working with tough or tightly-pulled cords. A well-balanced knotter helps reduce hand strain during long sessions and improves the final appearance of your knots and loops.
3. Paracord Jigs
A paracord jig is another must-have. These devices securely hold your cords in place while you weave, ensuring consistent tension and uniform design. Jigs come in various sizes, from compact 10-inch models perfect for bracelets to professional 14-inch setups that support larger items like belts or rifle slings. Some jigs even include attachments for creating complex designs like monkey-fist knots, popular as decorative pieces or weighted survival tools.
4. Monkey-Fist Jig Add-Ons
Monkey-fist knots are both functional and visually impressive, often used in keychains or self-defense tools. A monkey-fist jig add-on takes the guesswork out of creating these symmetrical, ball-like weaves. By maintaining consistent spacing and structure, these tools help crafters perfect their monkey-fist techniques without repeated trial and error.
Why a Complete Kit Matters
Having all these tools in one cohesive kit not only saves time but significantly improves the quality of your work. You’ll spend less time improvising and more time creating. For those interested in selling their handmade items or gifting them with pride, a well-crafted product speaks volumes about your attention to detail.
Conclusion
Whether you're new to paracord crafting or looking to refine your skills, the right paracord tool kit is a game-changer. Tools like the instructional Mandrel eliminate frustration and steep learning curves, while jigs, fids, and knotters bring accuracy and polish to every project. If you're serious about paracord art from survival gear to custom accessories investing in a complete, high-quality kit is the smartest step forward.

Here's a quick video tutorial that shows how I assembled my hanging garden solar light shade after 3D printing.
The materials you will need are:
- 1 3D printed solar light shade (printed in 2 pieces )
- 1 big box store tapered path LED solar light with top diameter of 2 3/4 inches across. ( I used the Wal-mart Mainstays brand that runs under $3 each.)
-Scissors
-Twine, nylon string, paracord, or wire to fit through the top holes for hanging.
Instructions:
1. Remove the top of the solar path light from its post and place into the hanging holder such that the solar panel is facing upwards and the 4 holes of the holder are at the top.
2. Place the shade over the holder containing the garden light so that the inner edges slide into place within the groove of the holder.
3. String an adequate length of twine or hanging cord of your choice through one of the top holes, then across the solar panel to the opposite side through another hole.
4. Tie a secure knot at the top.
5. Repeat the process with another length of cord through the second set of holes on top of the holder for added stability.
6. Hang your solar light anywhere in your garden that receives a bit of sunlight and enjoy!
If you'd like to purchase the .STL file for this decorative hanging garden solar light shade, be sure to check out the Etsy link in my bio! Thanks!

I just learned my paracord supplier has a Pinterest for like designs and stuff
But they also have quotes, some of my favourites being “DIY: The only place where ‘Measure twice, cut once’ turns into ‘eh, close enough’ ”, “Crafting is my way of saying ‘I could buy that but where’s the fun in that’ ”, “Crafting Tip: If in doubt, add more colours. When not in doubt, add even more!” and my personal favourite “In crafting, perfection is overrated. Embrace the wonky and call it artisanal”
I was not expecting them to have a Pinterest much less these but it is a nice surprise
