Our post in celebrating Transgender Awareness Week highlights self-portraits by Kama La Mackerel (they/them).

La Mackerel is non-binary and multidisciplinary artist from Mauritius. Their work is grounded in the exploration of justice, love, healing, decolonization, and self- and collective empowerment.

“Their series entitled ‘Breaking the Promise of Tropical Emptiness: Trans Subjectivity in the Postcard’ strongly and humorously redefines the typical aesthetic of postcards from Mauritius, more often than not reduced to the demonstration of luxuriant exoticism, presenting lush, sunny and wild landscapes that bear no trace of civilization.”

La Mackrel’s works are included in Transgalactic: photography, genre, transition. The front cover image for the publication features a self-portrait by Juliana Huxtable, an African American writer, performer, and DJ. “Her work is inspired by comic and Afrofuturist mythologies. Huxtable reinvents the art of the self-portrait to compose avatars in which her own image hybridizes with all kinds of creatures, from the animal to the digital, in order to evoke the infinite fluidity of her own gender identity.”

Artists featured in Transgalactic: photography, genre, transition explore a possible panorama of the role played by photography in the construction of their (trans) gender.

Und in der progressiven Partywelt, die sich sonst so gerne und lautstark zum Nahostkonflikt äußert, um den einzigen jüdischen Staat der Welt zu dämonisieren? Die BDS-Hashtags teilt, Tel Aviv boykottiert, Israel „Pinkwashing“ vorwirft und israelische Künst­le­r*in­nen wegen ihrer Staatsangehörigkeit nicht buchen will? Die deutsche Technoclubs ins Visier nimmt, wenn diese als zu „proisraelisch“ empfunden werden? Ohrenbetäubendes Schweigen.

In den vergangenen Jahren haben sich Teile der Clubkultur sehr bemüht, Israelhass oben auf die Agenda der Szene zu setzen – von #DJsForPalestine bis hin zu den „Berlin Nightlife Workers Against Apartheid“.  [...]

Aus einem komplexen Konflikt wird eine einfache Erzählung: Israel wird zum Inbegriff des Bösen. Aus einem Schutzort für Jü­din­nen*­Ju­den weltweit, gegründet von Schoah-Überlebenden, wird ein „Apartheidstaat“, den es zu „dekolonialisieren“ gelte. Die Buzzwords der BDS-Bewegung finden auf der Tanzfläche Resonanz. Antisemitismusvorw��rfe werden abgeschmettert: ein Iron Dome gegen Kritik. Denn sie kollidieren mit dem Selbstbild einer aufgeklärten Clubblase.

Von den allermeisten dieser Stimmen ist nach dem brutalen Angriff auf Zi­vi­lis­t*in­nen in Israel am Samstag kein Dezibel zu hören. Klare Worte der Solidarität, der Anteilnahme, der Verurteilung dieser abscheulichen Verbrechen passen offenbar nicht zu einem Weltbild, das Israel nur als Täter kennt – und nie als Opfer. Ganz egal, wie viele Hamas-Raketen die queere Partymetropole Tel Aviv treffen, ganz egal wie viele lebensfrohe Fes­ti­val­be­su­che­r*in­nen kaltblütig ermordet werden.

Einige wenige aus der Szene haben sich doch zur Situation geäußert. Und schnell wünscht man sich, sie hätten es lieber gelassen. Die dänische Techno-DJ Mama Snake, die BDS unterstützt, teilte in einer Instagram-Story einen Beitrag, der das Massaker an israelischen Zi­vi­lis­t*in­nen als „Kampf für Leben, Würde und Freiheit“, für „die Vorstellung, dass andere Welten möglich sind“, verharmlost. Dazu postet sie nicht mal die richtige Flagge, und teilt die jordanische. In einer zweiten Story, offenbar nach Kritik, verurteilt sie doch noch die Gewalt gegen Zivilist*innen.

DJs wie Juliana Huxtable und Dina fällt nichts anderes ein, als den „palästinensischen Widerstand“ mit Social-Media-Beiträgen zu unterstützen. Und in den Kommentaren unter Posts zum Festival „Supernova“ reagieren viele Use­r*in­nen hämisch. Der Tenor: Die ermordeten Psytrance-Fans hätten es verdient, weil sie gewagt haben, in Israel zu feiern."
