Respectfully I think Nero would be protective of Dante. He only chew the man out for that one comment and maybe many other insignificant reasons. Originally in DMC4 novel Deadly Fortune, iirc, he has this angry attitude toward Dante because at some point he admired Dante: Nero wants an adult like Dante in his life and that's what pissed him off.

Yea Dante is also smug and it pissed Nero off in DMC4. But it was because the people of Fortuna and Kyrie's safety was on the line and Nero had had no idea who Dante was. Yet they kept on showing off to one another like two dudes flexing their muscles and wagging their bags of tricks. They were happy to impress to the other potential-long-lost-family member. Not to mention both Dante and Nero thought that the other is stronger than them all the time and it pushed them to do what they did.

Now I can't really quote the DMC5 novel due to potential mistranslations (I will try to find some other sources) but from the situation alone ( an apocalyptic scenario) Nero has reasons to be on edge and look like he pissed off at Dante all the time. He held Dante at high regard yet not only the older man force Nero to get away, called him name, disappeared for a whole month then came back like nothing happened, STILL tight lips about what's going on all this time and rather went ahead to fight Urizen. Maybe to Nero, if it was Dante of DMC4, he would have definitely let Nero help out. For god's sake his arm was ripped off! It's personal! But here Dante refused his help and try to do everything on his own, which sounds worse than Dante going in with Trish and Lady. He wanted to help Dante so badly but Dante act rather dismissive and even nonchalant to Nero's determination for unknown reasons. But again, Dante was ultimately the roots of why Nero is there in Redgrave. Dante let him keep the Yamato and he lost it, then because of it Dante lost too. He wanted to correct his mistake, not only to himself but to the person who is dear to him. And Dante was his savior, the adult he longed to be in his life. It pissed Nero that he is so helpless when he has the power, yet he couldn't help the one person who needs it.

Even after knowing Vergil is his father, I believe Nero still take Dante's side and not just the middle person. He fights in Dante's place, successfully takes revenge for him AND Dante. So yes he IS protective of Dante at some point.

Love this official art bc it looks like Nero’s caught Dante stealing a bottle of wine and is judging him harshly while V and Vergil try to pretend it isn’t happening

Alternatively: A stupid financial move from Dante forced them to get the wait jobs in the first place.
