The Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane that crashed in western Kazakhstan while on its way from Baku to Grozny on Wednesday went down as a result of a Russian anti-aircraft missile, Euronews reported on Thursday, citing government sources. According to the sources, Russian air defense forces fired a surface-to-air missile at the AZAL flight amid increased drone activity in Grozny. The missile reportedly exploded near the plane, damaging its fuselage.
Euronews sources also said the damaged plane was denied permission to land at Russian airports, despite the pilots requesting an emergency landing. Subhonkul Rahimov, a passenger on the Baku-Grozny flight who was injured in the crash, told Russian state media that the Azerbaijan Airlines crew attempted to land in Grozny three times. The crew was instructed to fly over the Caspian Sea toward Aktau in western Kazakhstan, according to Euronews. The plane’s GPS navigation systems were reportedly jammed throughout the flight over the sea.
The Azerbaijani outlet Caliber.Az reported, citing “reliable government sources,” that the plane was targeted by a Russian Pantsir-S air defense system as it approached Grozny. According to the outlet, Russian electronic warfare systems “completely paralyzed the communication systems” of the Azerbaijani aircraft, causing it to disappear from radar.
The British aviation security company Osprey Flight Solutions warned its clients that the Azerbaijan Airlines flight was “likely shot down by a Russian military air-defense system,” the AP reported.
Additionally, Reuters reported that the flight “was downed by a Russian air defence system,” citing four sources in Azerbaijan with knowledge of the government’s investigation.
The Azerbaijani, Russian, and Kazakh governments have not officially commented on the reports that the AZAL plane was downed by Russian air defenses. On December 25, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the flight had altered its course “due to worsening weather conditions” and that the crash occurred “during landing” in Kazakhstan. “The causes of the crash are unknown to us. There are various theories, but I believe it’s too early to discuss them. The matter must be thoroughly investigated,” Aliyev said.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia would refrain from “building any hypotheses” until the investigation is complete. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s Senate Chairman Maulen Ashimbayev dismissed as "speculative" any attempts to "draw conclusions from photos, suggesting these are the result of certain actions, and so on."
Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev, who is leading the government’s commission investigating the crash, told Tengrinews that authorities are currently unable to confirm or dismiss any theories due to the ongoing investigation. During a subsequent briefing in Aktau, he reiterated that it is “impossible to rule out any theory.” Bozumbayev added that Kazakhstan does not have an official version of the events, and neither Russia nor Azerbaijan has provided one.
Shortly after the crash, videos emerged showing fragments of the plane’s tail section, which appeared to have damage consistent with that caused by anti-aircraft missile fragments.
The crash claimed the lives of citizens from three countries: Azerbaijan, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan’s Health Ministry released a list of 25 victims, including passengers and crew members aged 19 to 64. According to the Azerbaijani outlet 1news, the list only included Azerbaijani citizens. Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry reported that six Kazakhstani nationals were among the dead, while Kazakhstani Transport Minister Marat Karabayev confirmed that seven Russians were also killed. All three Kyrgyz citizens aboard survived.
As of 3:45 p.m. Moscow time on December 26, the bodies of 10 victims had been identified: four Azerbaijanis, three Russians, and three Kazakhs, the Kazakhstani Emergency Situations Ministry told Russian state media.
On the morning of December 26, an emergency services plane transported nine Russian survivors from Aktau to Moscow. Azerbaijani citizens who were injured in the crash were being prepared for transport to Baku later that day.
The Azerbaijani authorities declared December 26 a day of mourning. A minute of silence was observed at Baku Airport, where the Azerbaijan Airlines flight had begun, and a memorial stand was set up to honor the victims. In Moscow, flowers were placed outside the Azerbaijani Embassy. The Chechen authorities pledged to assist the families of those killed and injured in the crash.

Putin and Aliyev hold urgent talks amid rising tensions Over Azerbaijan Airlines crash
In a critical development, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a second call in two days to Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev to discuss the tragic crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger jet. Following Aliyev's strong statement accusing Russia of obscuring the true cause of the crash on the Baku to Grozny flight, Putin urgently called Aliyev. As reported by the Azerbaijani president's press service, the Kremlin initiated the conversation. The discussion reportedly focused on the ongoing investigation into the aviation disaster. However, further details of the call were not disclosed.
Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed the call, adding that discussions surrounding the Azerbaijan airliner crash continue. This marks the second interaction between the leaders over a two-day period. Previously, Putin had expressed condolences over the "tragic incident" within Russian airspace but stopped short of directly acknowledging the plane was downed by Russian air defenses.
Meanwhile, Russian media narratives appear to be shifting. Prominent Kremlin propagandist Vladimir Solovyov deleted posts on his Telegram channel regarding Azerbaijan's demands for Russia to admit to the aircraft being shot down and to issue an apology. Additionally, he removed news of Aliyev's statement about the plane sustaining damage from ground fire.
Earlier, Aliyev accused Russia of attempting to hide the true cause of the crash. He criticized Russia for providing absurd explanations in the past days, demanding Russia admit to shooting down the plane, apologize, and offer compensation. In response to this crisis, it has emerged that Baku intends to tighten regulations on the stay of Russian citizens within Azerbaijan's borders.

President Aliyev is on the left. Dmitry Kiselev, Director General of the Rossiya Segodnya International News Agency is on the right.
The interview occurred on 17 December 2024 and just recently surfaced in this official English translation. At the bottom of the link are two videos, one in higher and another in lower resolution, both in Russian. The map below provides Azerbaijan’s location relative to its neighbors. For movie fans, the James Bond film The World is Not Enough is based on the building of the BTC pipeline and does the best job of any Bond movie in depicting who is the genuine global outlaw nation. That is now old history, and Aliyev is a solid Russian ally. Just four months ago, Putin made an informal state visit to Baku I reported in “Putin in Azerbaijan.” Now for the interview:
- Mr. President, we sincerely thank you for agreeing to give an interview to the Russian company VGTRK and the RIA Novosti agency. In 2022, just days - and even hours - before the start of the special military operation, you signed the Declaration on Allied Interaction with President Putin in Moscow. Since then, the world has changed dramatically. What does the alliance between Azerbaijan and Russia signify in the current context? Yes, you are absolutely correct. The Declaration on Allied Interaction was signed on February 22, 2022. As you noted, the situation in our region and the world as a whole has undergone significant changes. However, these changes have not affected the nature or form of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia. I believe the signing of this declaration demonstrates the long journey we have traversed together over more than 30 years—working diligently to strengthen our cooperation in trade, economic, and political spheres, and proving our partnership in various challenging situations.

Russia Starts Withdrawal of Peacekeeper Troops from Karabakh

MOSCOW — The Kremlin has confirmed reports about the start of the withdrawal of Russian peacekeeping forces stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh. “It is indeed so,” Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president, said when asked by Russian media on Wednesday to comment on the reports. He did not elaborate. Earlier, a number of Azerbaijani social media users published videos of Russian military convoys moving out of Nagorno-Karabakh in the direction of the Azerbaijani city of Ganja. Azerbaijani authorities initially did not confirm that the matter concerned the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers. Later, Hikmet Hajiyev, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s top foreign…

Skate America Men’s LP Pt. 2
The final group skates for gold. This is the big group. Nathan Chen. Jason Brown. Keegan Messing. Dmitry Aliyev. It going to be a battle in this group.
Jason Brown will lead us off with a much anticipated Schindler’s List. He always puts so much heart into all his programs. Landing his jumps very easily. Wonderful choreography. It’s a captivating program. Even the commentators are quiet (for once). Better extensions than most of the women. It obviously means a lot to him and the longer the season goes on, the better it’s going to become. Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Righfully in 1st.
OMG. Finally! Alexei Bychenko is skating to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack! The last elite program was Marai’s in 2010 and her dress had nothing to do with the program. Alexei went all out. He looks very intense for this program though. It’s a fun movie franchise, he needs to have fun with it. There’s the fun. Bad fall. I like this program and I think when he’s comfortable with it, it’ll be once to see and likely once of my favorites this season. Not his best but I certainly can’t wait to see more of the program.
Michal Brezina has a very colorful shirt. His program is to the Beatles so it fits. He’s a tall man and all legs. Oh that’s fun choreography. He’s trying to sell the program and doing a far better job than most this early. It’s an interesting program. I’m not quite sold on the program yet, but it’s definitely fun and has some cool moments. He seems tired at the end of it, not quite selling it yet. He’s not happy with his performance though.
Keegan Messing is dedicating his long to his brother. I can’t imagine the pain he’s going through and he’s such a gentlemen on and off the ice. He’s got a lot of speed and a huge quad. I mean, he got high. He’s almost overpowering his jumps. I love his spins. I like this program. The classic rock is different than his Chaplin and it’s a nice difference. I love his spins. They are always so unique. What an emotional weekend for him.
Dmitry Aliyev is next. This is different than his long and as we all know, I love it. I love when the prgrams are different styles. Shows different aspects. And I like this aspect and style of his skating. He’s struggling with his jumps but his choreography and extensions are so amazing. I disagree with Johnny (shocker). I like the drama of it. He needs to skate it lights out and when he does, the program will be amazing. He‘s one to watch.
And Jason gets the silver!
Nathan Chen and Rocketman. Here we go. That is a very colorful shirt. I feel like if you’re going to do Elton John, bling it out. He’s known for that and it would have been fun. Steady and clean so far. Love the opening song and the transition to Rocketman. So far I’m loving the music. He seems more relaxed into this program than I have seen before. And now the transition into the cover song with the wrap part and the choreography is fun! Often hip hop on the ice ice just doesn’t look good but that was fun. This will be a fun program through the season.
And of course, he’s in first. Jason takes silver and the men are off to a wonderful start in the season!

Dmitry Aliyev - 98.98 The 4Lz+3T was so solid it was amazing. The jumps along with the music work well. He’s really got the character of the music down.
Patrick Chan - you are more than dust in the wind! 3A his mortal enemy. But the edges were so buttery smooth. And his opening 4T was gorgeous.
Keiji Tanaka - 80.05 - 4S bad fall sliding into the boards. He landed the 3Lz+3T, and landed the 3A. No pops, so I’ll take it!
Alexei Bychenko - 84.13 - 3A was beautiful, 4T was a bit off on the landing but held on well, 3Lz+3T good. It was such a spirited program.
Deniss Vasiljevs- 79.52 - 3Lz+3T, 3A rough fall. That last spin is such a trip I love the positions so much.

Azerbaijani forces shelled Armenia's territory Tuesday and killed at least 49 Armenian soldiers, Armenia's prime minister said, a large-scale attack that fueled fears of broader hostilities breaking out between the longtime adversaries.
The hostilities erupted minutes after midnight, with Azerbaijani forces unleashing an artillery barrage and drone attacks in many sections of Armenian territory, according to the Armenian Defense Ministry.
The ministry said fighting continued during the day despite Russia's attempt to broker a quick cease-fire. It noted that the shelling grew less intense but said Azerbaijani troops still were trying to advance into Armenian territory.
The ministry added that the Azerbaijani shelling damaged civilian infrastructure and also wounded an unspecified number of people.
Azerbaijan charged that its forces returned fire in response to “large-scale provocations” by the Armenian military, claiming that the Armenian troops planted mines and repeatedly fired on Azerbaijani military positions, resulting in unspecified casualties and damage to military infrastructure.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in a decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a separatist war there ended in 1994.
Azerbaijan reclaimed broad swaths of Nagorno-Karabakh in a six-week war in 2020 that killed more than 6,600 people and ended with a Russia-brokered peace deal. Moscow, which deployed about 2,000 troops to the region to serve as peacekeepers under the deal, has sought to maintain friendly ties with both ex-Soviet nations.
Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, held a meeting with military officials to discuss the situation. “It was noted that the responsibility for the current tension rests squarely with the political leadership of Armenia,” his office said.
Turkey, an ally of Azerbaijan, also placed the blame for the violence on Armenia. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called for Yerevan to halt its “provocations,” and Defense Minister Hulusi Akar condemned “Armenia’s aggressive attitude and provocative actions.”
Speaking in parliament early Tuesday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Azerbaijani shelling killed at least 49 Armenian soldiers. He squarely rejected the Azerbaijani claim that it was responding to Armenian provocations.
Pashinyan noted that the Azerbaijani action followed his recent European Union-brokered talks with Aliyev in Brussels that revealed what he described as Azerbaijan's uncompromising stand.
As the fighting raged overnight, Pashinyan quickly called Russian President Vladimir Putin and later also had phone calls with French President Emmanuel Macron, European Council President Charles Michel, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss the hostilities.
The Armenian government said it would officially ask Russia for assistance under a friendship treaty between the countries and also appeal to the United Nations and the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a Moscow-dominated security alliance of ex-Soviet nations that includes Armenia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refrained from comment on Armenia's request but added during a conference call with reporters that Putin was “taking every effort to help de-escalate tensions.”
The Armenian Foreign Ministry said top officials from the security grouping held a meeting to discuss the fighting. Armenia's representative at the grouping emphasized during the meeting that Yerevan expects its allies to take “efficient collective steps to ensure security, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Armenia.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry urged both parties “to refrain from further escalation and show restraint.”
Moscow has engaged in a delicate balancing act, maintaining strong economic and security ties with Armenia, which hosts a Russian military base, while also developing close cooperation with oil-rich Azerbaijan.

Ilham Aliyev is one of Eurasia’s most visionary leaders and Azerbaijan is playing an increasingly important role in the emerging Multipolar World Order.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed his country’s alliance with Russia in the extended interview that he gave to Rossiya Segodnya chief Dmitry Kiselyov earlier this week that can be read in full here. It’s extremely detailed so the present piece will summarize the insight that he shared for convenience. Aliyev began by praising the Declaration on Allied Interaction between Azerbaijan and Russia that he agreed to with Putin on 22 February 2022 as an historic event in their relations.
He appreciated Putin’s state visit over the summer and noted how their trade is rising, Russian visits to Azerbaijan have been restored to their pre-COVID levels, and there are now twice as many flights as during the Soviet era. Aliyev hopes that there won’t be a hot war between NATO and Russia, which would be apocalyptic, and expressed optimism that Trump will make positive changes to US foreign policy. Azerbaijan can also help facilitate a détente between Russia and the US if both are interested.
Aliyev reminded Kiselyov about how Azerbaijan is independent of East and West, has the unique status of being allied with both Russia and NATO-member Turkiye, and previously hosted meetings between top Russian, US, and NATO military officials, which wasn’t by chance since it’s equally trusted by them. In response to being asked about reports that Azerbaijan will host a Turkish base, he said that such isn’t needed since their 2021 Declaration on Allied Relations already includes a mutual defense clause.

Skate America Men’s SP Pt. 2
Alright, the second group of men is next and this is the big one. Keegan, Nathan, Jason. Boyang. This will be a fun group. Sorry for not getting this live. I went to dinner but I’m splitting my time between the men and my Astros. Gotta route for the ‘Stros to make it to the World Series!
Cha Jun-Hwan. Forgive me if I get the names wrong. I’m going by how it’s done on screen. I’m almost positive I saw him last year and I liked his Romeo and Juliet program? I have a bad memory. Doubled his quad. I’m not a big fan of the younger set doing tango programs. It is a very sensual dance and they rarely can truly pull it off well. It’s also like the war horses. Every skater has to skate one at least once. That said, I can see the potential if he slows down a little bit.
I’ve always enjoyed Boyang Jin. He’s an excellent skater when he’s on. He likes the color gold. Ouch. Bad attempt at the quad. And a beautiful second attempt. He’s struggling this program. Still, he’s such a beautiful skater, excellent extensions, interesting choreography, spins are fast. I feel bad for him. I think he can make a comeback though. I have faith.
Dmitry Aliyev is next. Excellent quad combo. He’s very steady on his legs today. My thing with the Russian men is they very rarely exode a lot personality. You could literally take one Russian man and transplant the program and it would look pretty much the same, except to the level of skills. Dmitry is clearly one of the best though. Excellent choreography, extension. I really enjoyed that. He should be easily in first for now and he is.
Jason Brown has a different look for his short costume. I like it. He’s one of my favorite skaters, so lyrical and such a showman. Plus, he always has such interesting programs and music choices. Damn, a pop in the axel. I literally don’t think anybody has skated clean today. Nice recovery though on the triple-triple. I like this program. It’s very mature and different tonally than anything he has done before. Tara and Johnny need to shut up. Jason had issues with the triple axel and didn’t put it in until he was absolutely ready. Now he rarely misses it. Plus, it’s the first program of the season. So far no one has been perfect. 2nd for now. Not bad. Not great but still good.
Nathan Chen is next. Undefeated last season. One of the few skaters that has been able to go to school and still compete at his best ability. Even Nathan turned out of his quad. Interesting program. Not quite sure I like it. It is more mature for him. He’s really trying to get stretch his artistry each year. Not bad. He played a character and I believed it. He’s really improving and growing up. And a well deserved first place for Nathan.
Keegan Messing has my utmost respect. I mentioned in my update the passing of his brother and his respect for Yuzuru Hanyu at an earlier competition. A true competitor and gentlemen. And he’s a great skater as well. To do this so soon is a strength I don’t think I could have. A personal program for him. His song is the first song he danced with his wife at their wedding. I really enjoy his skating. He doesn’t have the flow like Jason but he skates with emotion and his style fits him instead of forcing him into a box that doesn’t. Wow, I didn’t see any mistake in that. A very emotional and beautiful program. Very well done. And he’s in 3rd for the night.
And that’s it for the men’s short programs. See everyone tonight for the ladies!

Russia will welcome EU mediation efforts in Karabakh negotiations – Peskov

Russia is ready to welcome the mediation efforts of the EU countries in the negotiations on Nagorno-Karabakh, if they contribute to the implementation of the existing agreements, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters today, TASS reports.
“If mediation efforts bring stability, predictability and help in the implementation of existing agreements, then they can only be welcomed. In general, work in this direction is going well,” Peskov said, when asked to comment on the EU countries’ statements of intent to enter the trilateral format of negotiations on Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Kremlin spokesman recalled that the trilateral agreements of the heads of the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan and Armenia on Nagorno-Karabakh were reached “with the very energetic participation of President Vladimir Putin.”
“He is in constant contact with acting Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol] Pashinyan, and with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan. Now we are dealing with the issues of implementation of the agreements reached,” he said.
