My characters are very much alive to me. They are friends. Autonomous beings. They surprise me - disagree on occasion* - have their own thought patterns and speaking patterns.

Did look into DID but discovered I definitely do not have it since there is no amnesia memory loss switching ect or basically any of the required criteria.

I would say my characters originate from trauma however - they arrived when I was in a state of deep suicidality so I would have a story to tell. So I would have a purpose. They knew I would love telling their story - that I am suited to tell their story and love the process - and imparted little fragments of themself to me which I could tend and see bloom.

Question to writers: what is your personal experience with your characters like? What are they to you?

I have always had imaginary friends and sometimes had full conversations with inanimate objects. My characters however, are much more long term.

It is odd. Even when they did not feel fully autonomous it was like they already existed - I simply did not have the knowledge to understand their existence but it was there, like a fossil, waiting to be uncovered.

It does offer a strange boon and boundary in writing. I am limited and constricted by my characters. I cannot make them make choices they would not feasibly make. The only events I can give them are ones that could feasibly occur in the world. And who they are and the limits of the world are already mostly set. Nontheless, there's still a great deal of variation, and I can choose a theoretical timeline that makes a satisfying story with resolution.

Asran "I would say rather rarely. While I am technically in a state of disagreement with you now it is so minor as to qualify as nothing but a minor correction. Disagreements are opposing. This is agreement with a caveat."

I just get a void from Lumin dang it. Want to hear her more. Got something! A sense of: (You don't talk to me enough for me to disagree with you about anything). In brackets because those are not quite her actual words it's primarily the sense of meaning that was conveyed.

I've had a few mild? experiences with psychosis, and two of my characters have stigmatised disorders.

Rambling about them under the cut because I love them and went on a bit:

Lumin seems to have some level of ASPD and grandiosity. She makes an excellent doctor because of her utter insistence on excellence and ability to remain logical in stressful situations. "An incompetent doctor is a murderer" is one of her mantras.

She thinks of herself as monstrous and generally chases people off if they get too close. Obsessed with gaining status. Generally rude and dismissive to others because they don't care about self improvement nearly as much as her and have lesser status. Impulsive, spars to let off steam. Often goaded into shouting by bullies looking to make her look undignified. She has a tragic ending in the first book but finds fulfillment and happiness later on.

Dotto is a party-going drag queen who is excellent at cooking, sewing, knive throwing, and sarcasm. Has had hallucinations as long as she can remember and self medicates to cope. Might have schizophrenia, but the schizophrenia symptoms might be explained by psychosis + ADHD + OCD + trauma. Not sure. More research required.

Plot arc involves joining a guardhouse of sorts, receiving accommodations for the first time in his life, and slowly gaining confidence as he slowly becomes embroiled in High Fantasy Plot involving semi sentient moons and homunculi. Also gets a wonderful boyfriend in Asran.

I don't think Asran's disorders are stigmatized to the same extent so I won't mention him here.

Anyways enough of that very interested in the results. Would love to hear what people want to see more of - what misconceptions they hate - ect. Want to do a good job writing these awesome people who've been hanging out in my head for years.

If you're schizophrenic/schizospec in some way, have/experience psychosis, extreme paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, or in general have a mental illness / neurological condition that is widely demonized (like most cluster b disorders)

Could you please take a moment to leave a word or two about representation? I'm making this post so that people with misunderstood mental conditions could get a boost in talking about representation, and for everyone else to learn something valuable relating to portraying characters like that in original works (or fanworks too!)

Basically, I'm gathering input from people who live with these conditions about what they'd like to see more, in terms of representation in media, harmful stereotypes or pitfalls to avoid, and how to appropriately portray mental illness in fantasy settings for example.

So if you have anything you think would be valuable to know for people outside your group or community, feel free to add on! In reblogs or comments. No pressure though! You can only mention one thing for example, or maybe one criticism and one wish for what you'd like in representation. Don't be ashamed to go on a long rant either, if you have stuff to say! Whatever you feel like commenting on! I'll try to boost all/as many responses as this post gets.

Obviously I know even people within the same communities can have different opinions and preferences for representation, which is why I wish we could get a wide range of responses to this.

I'm writing this trope for Asran and Dotto. Part of the confusion comes from both of them naturally being giving and kind to others, so their mutual flirting is misinterpreting as business as usual.

Apologies for extra long post. Just love these two very much.

Dotto is an extraverted drag queen who loves doing favours, cooking, knive-throwing, sewing, giving strangers pep talks, and partying.

She calls everyone love and jokingly flirts with people, so Asran can't tell the difference between jokingly affectionate flirting and genuine flirting. And yes Dotto does lots of favours for him, but Dotto is giving to everyone, so it must be nothing more than friendship he thinks.

Asran's way of showing respect is by being incessantly formal. (You can probably see how this would backfire.) He wants to make people feel important and valued, and does his best to act like a professional diplomat at all times. People regularly misinterpret him as being aloof and holier than though despite this being his attempt to make people feel at ease.

He has great affection for everything and has once held a funeral for a cleaner wrasse he accidentally swallowed. Also adores doing favours for people and becomes ecstatic when anyone, strangers included, succeed.

Dotto has no idea why Asran refuses to be casual with her, assumes the formality implies distance, and assumes it must be because Asran doesn't feel comfortable yet. Asran picks up on Dotto's apprehension and assumes Dotto must not be interested in him romantically.

And because their friendship is so strong, and Dotto has seen friendships ruined by becoming romantic, both of them refuse to make a move and admit their love to each other for AGES.

Have tagged this as goby and shrimp as this becomes their nicknames for each other.

(Goby and shrimp form a symbiotic friendship, the goby on lookout for predators to protect the blind shrimp, the shrimp digging a safe burrow to share and hide in. Asran is blind, Dotto only got to stay housed thanks to Asran tutoring him.)

One trope I love writing about in literally any fandom is the two love intrests being in love but they don't know it/don't want to accept it/are truly just that oblivious/conflicted about their feelings, but it's abundantly obvious to everyone around them that they're madly in love. Sometimes, to spice it up, I go as far as to say that outsiders assume they're already together, and then you look at them in question and it's just a big ball of confusion.

I eat that shit for breakfast lunch and dinner.
