There's a lot going on in this scene.

Dan recognizes a problem in JD's life but he also knows he can't be the one to tell him because of his previous failings throughout their history.

He also is perceptive enough to recognize JD is deeply affected by what Dr. Cox says.

He's is also perceptive enough to realize what JD really wants out of life and his career.

Then we hit a really interesting philosophical point that I haven't really seen in other places: Cox owes a duty to JD that he never really intended to make. While he fights tooth and nail against it, he's JD's mentor and he does owe it to him to not accelerate making him jaded at his job.

Dan also has a familial duty to JD that's a little harder to nail down, so we'll leave it.

Everwood is not a very well known show.

It's a family drama that lasted 4 seasons back on The WB.

It's about two small town doctors: Dr. Brown and Dr. Abbott and their families.

Anyway, if you ever want to imagine what Greg House would have been like happily married to Stacy with two kids: meet Dr. Harold Abbott.

The town's original doctor and misanthrope jackass who just wants to "help the sick and the stupid".

So, there are three jerkass TV doctors that I love:

1. Harold Abbott

2. Perry Cox

3. Greg House

(Maybe, in a way, Dr. Walter Bishop of Fringe?)

Okay, well, for starters, everyone here knows you sell pills, and, yet, you use phrases like, 'take orally', and 'increases blood flow' way, way too much. I mean, jeepers, Julie. Do you understand you've got half the doctors on this staff believing that if they go ahead and join team Plomox, that they get an outside shot of you showing them the cotton inside your bottle? But would you like to know the real dirty, dirty little secret? It's that your drug is so damn good that you guys went ahead and put about a six hundred percent markup on it. But, hey, the only ones who get hurt are the sick people, right? And since your company damn sure doesn't care about them, and you're part of the system, that just means you don't care either. And that's pretty much what's making me sick.

Apathy, boredom, meh, these are the things that define the Four of Cups, it’s where you couldn’t care about everything everything everything past present and future.  Mainly this is due to you refusing to see what’s around you, or you’re just being stubborn.

One of the best Scrubs subplots is Kelso taking offense for Cox's unintended slight on his son. It's resolved great and it pairs very well with Ben Folds's "Still Fighting It," which is the song Christa Miller chose to pair with the scene.

Psych is to detective shows what Scrubs is to medical shows. Mostly delightful nonsense combined with genuinely compelling plot lines and then out of nowhere, bam, raw emotion and sincerity!
