drabble; you only know the identity of your soulmate when they are nearing death, but Varadha knows it when he is 10
Varadha has heard of the myth, the belief, the rule, as many people called it. Khansaaris are born with soulmates, but fate is cruel to us, the string is only visible when your soulmate is going to breathe their last.
It was cruel indeed, but oddly merciful. Sometimes there is pain when your soulmate was your loved one, a lover, or a spouse but there are times, when they are only strangers you mourn.
But, Varadha--he has never been lucky when it came to fate. You only know the identity of your soulmate when they are about to die, but Varadha knew it when he was 10.
It happens too quick, one moment his best friend, Deva is next to him, and the next moment he is storming off into the arena to challenge a wrestler thrice his size. Varadha hears his own voice amidst the crowd, screaming and beggind Deva to listen, but by the time when he reaches the arena, there is a crowd, and Deva lies on the the floor.
Bloodied and unconcious, the fool had touched a live wire.
Varadha had never been that scared in his life ever, not even when his mother was gravely ill, but this was a fear he couldn't even comprehend, he tires to shake him, wake him up, and the moment he looks down at his own fingers, he realizes.
A string.
A string that connected his finger to Deva's.
The soulmate string.
And, there's tears in his eyes. The string is only visible when your soulmate is at the doorstep of death, but Varadha refused to believe it, even if Deva was at death's doorstep, he would bring him back, if Savitri could bring Satyavan back, he would do it too, the gods would allow him, they are merciful.
He hits Deva's chest, with prayers in his head, and a few seconds later, Deva wakes up with a jerk gasping for air.
"Did he.. get up", the fool asked him, and Varadha looked ahead to find the wrestler on the ground unable to get up.
Varadha felt angry, at himself, at Deva, is this why they called it a curse?
Not only to know who your soulmate was, but also to seem them almost die? and almost being the reason for it?
Idiot, fool, you stupid-
He hugs Deva, when the latter gets up. There is blood on his arms and there is a scar than runs from his ears, and the blood is Varadha's hands too--Deva's blood.
When Rudra comes to them, Deva demands the nose  ring back, and amidst the spectating audience, he puts the nose ring back on Varadha, now drenched in his blood.
If this is what a curse was, it wasn't really a curse, it was a blessing, to be Deva's soulmate was a honor, a boon.
He watches Deva mouth agape, but he doesn't say anything that day, and only stares the string, now visible on his finger.
.
He wishes he had said something day, but then he realizes it was the best he didn't.
The jeep with Deva and amma leaves before him, as stood watching, heart now cold, and hands shaking.
If he was late even by minutes, dreadful things would have happened, and he realized, this was truly Khansaar's curse. His brother was the death that loomed over Deva at first, and now it his father, Varadha's presence had only harmed Deva, and even then this fool promised to return for him.
But he shouldn't, Varadha thought.
In this life, Varadha would never let Deva know he is his soulmate, and he wouldn't call him back, that was the only way to keep him safe.
