I'm not sure if anyone wants to see this but who knows. Random Madoka art in my utmv account. Who knows. I figured you guys have never seen me drawn anything other than cartoony humans and silly skeletons.
Tumblr media
This is me trying HiPaint (name sounds tacky asf) out for the first time. I can see a lot of mistakes that I did but I did it in one layer and this app sucks ass so I won't bother fixing that...
If you are interested in seeing me, hardcore Ibis Paint X glazer, review HiPaint (objectively)... Just come under the cut.
THIS APP SUCKS ASS!!
...kidding. Drawing apps may not suck, but my art may suck.
I am an experienced artist with over 7 years using Ibis Paint X (I was there before the liquify tool). Not to flex, obviously. But as you can see I am very at home with Ibis Paint X and I have tried other apps: Autodesk sketchbook, Medibang, Infinite Painter, android CSP...
Anyway, HiPaint. Yeah. This app doesn't fully suck. Imo, it's good and it's free— except there are banner ads!! Bane of my existence. In the bottom of the screen. Luckily you can fight this by simply turning off internet.
It has more free features than Ibis Paint X, I think. I am lost so I haven't explored this app fully yet.
However my phone is too old for this new youngster things. Boomer. The performance is choppy; spinning the artwork to a specific angle doesn't work, zooming doesn't work sometimes, pen randomly strokes because it doesn't read my finger touch.
Ideally, you may want to have a tablet and a stylus to utilize this app fully (which I don't have). Some say it's like procreate for Android.
Is it beginner friendly? ...not really. Maayyyybeeee. It doesn't give me an impression of beginner friendly. Every tool is hard to find. I've been drawing for years and I don't know what half of these tools even do. UI/UX isn't very intuitive in my opinion.
But yeah, it receives a 6/10 on the scale. -4 because the experience wasn't the best... Might try again once I have a tablet

some art progression thing
i wanna look at how my art has changed over the span of about a year (a bit less but close enough) by talking about what i consider key parts of my progress. sooo lets go
also i will only be writing about my human drawings cuz ive been drawing dragons my entire life but only started drawing humans in 2021 i think
(long post sorry)
Tumblr media
"kennith simmons"
first time posting art, first posted to reddit. i didnt give this one a title or anything i just called it kennith simmons. this method of toning was continuously used throughout most of my sketchbook drawings. drawn using pc, autodesk sketchbook (now known as just sketchbook), & mouse. not quite sure when i drew it but it was posted to reddit on the 28th of july 2023 so around then i think
(blood/sh warning)
Tumblr media
"kennith again"
one of my first times attempting a front view i think?? at least, this is the earliest one i can find. i was pretty proud of it at the time. drawn using pc, sketchbook, mouse. posted september 7th 2023
Tumblr media
"tongue"
i included this one because it was when i started to figure out how to do whatever the hell i did with the cup there idk what to call it but yk what i mean. drawn using pc, sketchbook, mouse. posted 27th september 2023
Tumblr media
"a smile a day keeps the doctor away"
gave colour theory a try here, its not great but its a start. this one is pretty unlike any other ive done before and it took me a while to figure out how to do the hands and mouth like that (even though it still doesnt look right). the main reason i included this one is because of the background; i chose it because it reminds me alot of my favourite surrealism artworks, and i continued to use backgrounds like this in certain pieces, including a much more recent one!
Tumblr media
"hi" (called "something or other" on reddit)
first time using an overlay of any kind- this is just a simple red one. i didnt figure out i could use other things like noise until later. I also tried to tone this one using just. a bunch of black lines rather than colours. drawn using pc, sketchbook, mouse. posted october 21st 2023
Tumblr media
"messing with my head"
this was my first one drawn in krita! i really liked the various brush textures and stuff so i decided to go all out with this one. also attempted a bit more colour theory. drawn using pc, krita, mouse. posted october 23rd 2023
Tumblr media
"nobody smiles like ray barnett"
i honestly dont have much to say about this one asides from the fact that i really like the toning method i used and i wanna use it again but i keep forgetting. also the lil shiny eye thing i still use that alot. and!! i believe this was my first time using noise overlay. drawn using pc, krita, mouse. posted october 29th 2023
Tumblr media
"ponder"
possibly my favourite "old" artwork of mine
crosshatching!! i love crosshatching and i'd like to use that more often too. this one is old but i still really like it, especially the way i drew their teeth. also!! i used the background from the other one again. drawn using pc, krita, mouse. posted november 19th, 2023.
Tumblr media
"fool's gold"
this one is special because its the first one i posted that was drawn with a drawing tablet! (it's actually not, but we dont talk about the real first one. i dont like it. at all.)
also, first time using a colour pallete which wasnt just the colours the characters canonically used. other then that i dont really have much to say about this one asides from i used crosshatching again too. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted december 7th, 2023
Tumblr media
"Best Friends"
1st posted drawing of 2024
i like this one alot still, it was my first time trying lineless art and i think it turned out alright. i also consider it significant because i still continue to use this eye shape in certain drawings. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted january 2th 2024
Tumblr media
"spoilers paper doll"
this was my first time making a paper doll and i think i could have done alot better but tbh this one was more about "finish before 2024" (i started it on the 31st of december) rather than "make this as good as possible". made with pens, pencils, beads, string, scissors. posted january 6th 2024
Tumblr media
"creature"
i still like this one, particularly the way i toned it (if you can either consider that toning idk) as well as the way i drew the mouth. i dont think ive ever revealed as much gums as that in any of my drawings but i think its pretty cool.
the most important thing about it is i believe it's the first time i used this particular brush, and good LORD it is still my favourite brush ever. i dont think i will ever stop using it.
drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted january 30th, 2024
Tumblr media
"unnamed aoapp fanart"
similar to the last one, but more. i also used that eye shape again here as well as a different pupil. and the cake. idk how to draw cake tbh. but i think it looks decent. it was also tough to achieve that body shape with all the other stuff going on. i really like the way i toned this tbh. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted february 9th, 2024
Tumblr media
"yes"
okok so this is where shit really started to change. this was my first lord of the flies fanart, and the weirdest thing about it? I DIDNT USE THE FUCKIGN SPAMTON NOSE (excluding my nathan & spoilers drawings). not a fan of how i drew the nose in this one either way but still. wow. i always considered the "spamton nose" a signature part of my style but i decided to just drop it in this one lmao. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted march 3rd, 2024
Tumblr media
"jack part 2"
okay nevermind the nose is back lmao. nothing to say about this one other then that tbh, it was just an experimental thing because i was bored and wanted to see how he would look in my usual style. i hate it tbh but it was still kinda fun. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted march 9th 2024
Tumblr media
"ralph and jack"
woah fullbody drawings. while im not super fond of the drawings themselves i do really like the pencil and crosshatching, i think it looks nice and would like to do it again at some point. now that im looking at it again i am making a mental note to work on my anatomy. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted march 11th 2024
Tumblr media
didnt name this one either. i drew the side view of the face differently to how i usually did it. it now has more of a nose. i also tried a new pupil type, kinda resembling certain older cartoon styles. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted march 20th, 2024
Tumblr media
"he got what he deserved"
oh man.. back to gnp again. theres alot of things i like about this one. it was intended to be just perspective practice (even tho its nothing crazy), im really happy with the linework and some of the toning (mostly the teeth tbh) but i also really like the mouth, and i used that weird mouth end thing in my most recent artwork because.. idk its kinda weird but i like it. probably the most "unique" eye i've ever done, same goes for the blood, and i used the same technique for the blood as i did in a later piece. overall i just really like this one ig?? def another one of my favourites. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted march 29th 2024
Tumblr media
"delicacy"
this one isnt super important either but i included it mainly because of the way i drew the mouth. its alot more.. realistic?? than how i normally draw mouths, the teeth especially. it was a pretty fun thing to try out and i think it looks pretty good. its also another lineless piece, this version was an unfinished one and sadly i never finished it. i may remake it though, who knows. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted april 1st, 2024
Tumblr media
"my jack merridew design"
again, not very important. but im including it because i believe it's my first ref piece, and its a really simple one but its been a helpful guide for drawing this character + knowing what i should include in a ref piece. ive also used it as a guide for colour theory, and by that i mean just slapping what i think fits over the colours and if it works, i use it. it was also helpful for drawing clothing, particularly the folds in the cape. its mostly pretty random but some are deliberate and i think its a good start. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted april 14th, 2024
Tumblr media
"i hate this guy"
my first time drawing noses like that in a while, since alot of them before that were front or side view practice. i drew this after finishing my visual arts assignment (not shared anywhere) in which i used colours similarly to this, which inspired me to try it again. the colours are a bit much but i do like it. this was also another unfinished piece that i never got to. it was supposed to involve ralph but i had too much fun colouring jack to actually get to that. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted april 16th 2024.
Tumblr media
"yawn"
tried a few new things here. i used a textured background (actually not my first time but oh well), as well as a different brush which i still use on occasion. and i also toned and coloured using a watercolour brush. also i attempted to draw a mouth like this on a more "humanoid" face, and i think i did a pretty good job of that. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted april 21st 2024
Tumblr media
this one was never named, despite it being my 2nd most liked lotf post i think..? (next to the fucking mining away video lmao). it was never meant to be that great it was just a random ass doodle i decided to finish because i was bored. i included it here because ofc there's the eye shine thing and shape again, as well as some.. interesting toning choices. but i also used the same kinda blood/gore again, and this time used the eraser tool to create holes rather than drawing in the holes, and i think it looks alot better. i also lined some things with white which i think gives a nice effect. i think my favourite part about this piece is the way i drew the jewellery though, its pretty different to how i did it before and i think it looks nice. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted may 2nd, 2024
Tumblr media
"i'll teach you the way"
i mentioned this one before, it has the surrealism inspired background, now featuring trees, clouds and sun. this one took so fucking long mostly because of the war paint on the right dude. to achieve that i made excessive use of the replace tool and it was tedious and painful. anyways i include this one because its similar to the colouring in one of the previous ones i put in here as well as the eye shapes being pretty different to what i usually do (and the background ofc). drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted may 5th 2024
Tumblr media
"nathan's youtube channel"
this one isnt super special but it was by this point that i decided i would try and vary eye, nose and blush shapes a bit more. and i used that one brush again (can you tell im running out of things to say). drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted may 10th, 2024
Tumblr media
didn't title this one but from here onwards, i started to try have more variety in how i draw noses. here i was aiming for a hook nose appearance. also, the blush is a bit more wavy, unlike the square blush i used to do. here i also made the shine on the eyelids some shade of blue instead of white and i think it looks alot better. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted may 21st, 2024
Tumblr media
"experimental side view"
first attempt drawing a more unique (for me at least) nose at a side view. other then that its not that special and i dont really like it. also i decided to use blue lineart out of nowhere which i also continued using for certain artworks. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted may 25th, 2024
Tumblr media
"simon with braces"
here I tried to draw angles of the nose I hadn't tried before in this particular way, and I think it turned out looking decent for a first attempt. I also tried to include a few more 'realistic' features like more prominent lips in the first piece. I also tried to adjust the colours a bit to fit the surrounding blue. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted may 26th, 2024
Tumblr media
"ralf"
my most recent "serious" artwork. i mean its just a drawing of ralph but I tried multiple techniques i wasn't very used to before, such as a bit of difference in perspective, as well as another different nose shape, and variation in the lineart colours. i also tried to tone it a bit more realistically (while still keeping it cartoonish if that makes sense. its bright but not as bright as that one jack drawing i also put here). drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted may 27th, 2024
Tumblr media
"jack, the pig is here"
my most recent piece as of posting this. this one is just a shitpost drawing but I actually really like it. i like the flat colours with the simple black varying lineart. and the style overall kinda reverts back to my older style while also using aspects of my newer one (e.g. i used the new face & nose shape, while also using the weird wonky mouth that I kinda stopped using for a while during my experimenting.) it looks kinda weird but i genuinely like it alot and while theres stuff about it I would still change and try to improve i think it fits what i want my art to look like pretty well. drawn using pc, krita, wacom tablet, mouse. posted 2nd june 2024
sooo thats the post. i do want to continue experimenting and changing and improving over time, but im overall pretty content with the progress i've made in not a huge amount of time tbh. i like my style (most of the time) but im curious to see how it changes in another year or so
also i dont care that i have a tablet now i dont think ill ever be able to give up using a mouse as well
anyways thanks for reading, have a good day

2021 vs 2025 Lune x Al
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh how my babies have grown 🥺 i still do basic backgrounds but at least they're a little more interesting :D that first one was one of my very first digital art pieces! back when i used autodesk sketchbook instead of clip studio lol— i used ibis paint x on my phone for years (but i was never any good w art on my phone)—but 2020 was when i got my laptop! and with my laptop came my tablet 😔 i miss them
and now in the present! i broke my damn laptop so i did that piece on ibis paint x again :/ still shit at it lmao
anyway i think it's hilarious that i literally never did ship art (except for that v-day and even then it's not a mouth kiss so it's different) until like,, i was 18,, it's like i was physically unable to draw people kissing until i was an adult (obviously not true it's just a weird coincidence) im just bad at drawing kisses 😔 but ive drawn more kisses this & last year than the rest of my life it's wild

I have just realised that it's new year's eve.
Well, staying up past midnight is easy for me as my sleep scedule's a bit of a wreck. I don't have anything that I'm really thrilled about for 2024 (apart from deltarune chapter 3 and 4 possibly coming out that year) and I'm ending on a really lame year art wise as I still don't have my computer and I don't want to have to reinstall drivers and stuff. At least I have the excuse to make the 2024 drawings folder on my backup USB.
Tumblr media
I like having things in chronological order.
Anyway, here's the first and last drawings from each year because why not.
2019:
Tumblr media
This one only dates back to the 20th July as this was before I took art seriously as a hobby. I drew this in MS paint for a roblox game I was making.
Tumblr media
This dates back to the 25th December and I drew this in ibis paint x on my dad's old phone that me and my brothers shared. To play music in the background, I would have youtube as a window at the top and listen to the same 5 songs on loop. This took a considerable amount of time for some reason.
2020:
Tumblr media
This dates back to the 18th January and I drew this on my phone as I just got it at this point (the same phone that I still have currently). I had no idea what I was doing and it shows.
Tumblr media
This dates back to the 29th December and it seems like I've discovered undertale. This was when I started using my crappy laptop again and I drew this with the touchscreen it had (it was one of those hybrid laptop-tablet things) with my finger and autodesk sketchbook.
2021:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first one is technically the first of 2021 as it dates back to the 16th of January, but I've posted that one a lot whenever I redraw it every year so here's the drawing I drew the day after. It was for an animation meme but I saved it into the folder anyway for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was trying to model in blender for the first time towards the end of 2021 so the last picture is a boring sketch of anatomy from the 31st December to be used as refrence. The last actual artwork was a day before and at this point I had a little drawing tablet and was posting art on Newgrounds. I also started using medibang paint pro as autodesk sketchbook stopped working.
2022:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first drawing I have in my 2022 folder was technically from 10:30 PM on the 31st as I got impatient, but I put it here anyway. It's a gif but I made it into a png so I can put it on a tumblr post. Technically the first one was this drawing I made about 12 hours later on the 1st January. On newgrounds it's regarded as being in 2021 as it's in EST and my time zone is a couple hours ahead.
Tumblr media
The last drawing I have dates back to the 27th December where I was experimenting with art styles as I had just gotten a new idea for a game (what is now known as Roboska LV).
2023:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these date back to the 1st January however the seccond one was exported 40 minuites later according to the meta data. The first one is another redraw while the seccond one is a character profile and I just realised there's no shading on the hoodie.
Tumblr media
This dates back to the 9th December and I haven't been able to draw anything digitally since my computer's botched surgery on the 16th. I have drawn some stuff in my notebook though, so here's the "final" drawings of 2023 (basically anything in my notebook since the 9th). The dates are in the bottom corners. I didn't bother with fixing the lighting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I drew that picture of Kokichi Oma in the dark with only the light of my phone torch as I drew it while a film was playing in my school sports hall with dominos pizza. The last 2 I drew on the last day of school while completly ignoring everyone partying in the form room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got a book on how to draw in a manga art style so this is me trying to figure out how to adapt the tips into my artstyle to make it not suck.
Tumblr media
This is technically the last drawing of 2023. I drew it on the 26th. It also featured in the post about my personal best pencil drawings of 2023 too: https://pearlhikara.tumblr.com/post/737810429204643840/best-drawings-of-2023-notebook-12-and-13
Looking back, I don't think my change in art style from 2023 is as stark as the other years. I don't like how my art keeps changing and I want to just keep it at a consistent "very very good" and leave it at that as the little changes annoy me as I like consistency.
In terms of actual new year stuff, I'll probably just rewatch "who framed roger rabbit?" and go downstairs when it's near midnight to watch the fireworks on TV.

If you wanna ask any questions my inbox is free :) I have drawn digitally in many different ways over the years and I have some tips for the process. Here I'm just gonna give some getting started tips :)
For a beginner on either phone or computer I recommend autodesk sketchbook (sometimes just "sketchbook") personally, I used that for years and there are good tutorials from professional artists online when you want to learn more.
It takes some getting used to, like it took me forever to get used to sketching digitally in particular, but it's fun. If you wanna ask about specific tips for drawing itself I am open to giving some tips I've learned.
If you're looking into getting a drawing tablet and don't have one yet, I'd recommend a Wacom Intuos S. It's cheap, compact, and from a really good brand. Please please register your device on their website as well if you get a Wacom tablet at any point. They'll have you fill out a survey about what you want to use your tablet for and then give you free trials (often, like, 12-24 months) of a couple programs and then offer a full license for a discount. I got Clip Studio Paint this way and I love it.
For mobile, I'd recommend investing in a stylus at some point. Could even be one of those cheap pen-stylus combos. Very helpful
Anyways sorry for info dumping, digital art is my special interest ✌️have fun creating!
Chat, got any tips for someone wanting to start drawing digitally?
I wish to draw my silly little obsessions >:)

hey, sorry for bothering you but i'm seriously considering starting to draw digitally (i have never drawn before except for when i was a little kid). i love your art so i was thinking if you would maybe give me some tips? about anything, really. like if i should at first just purely focus on the basis and nothing else, graphic program recommendations (preferably free or cheap ones since i'm not 100% sure if i'll actually keep drawing long-term), etc.
just anything that you think would be useful for me.
thank you a lot in advance
OOOH BOY where to start (。・//ε//・。)
it partly depends on whether you already know how to draw a little. I'm not saying you have to be good at it, but if you've already put some work into your traditional skillz it's going to help. oh also, if you do have some tradart background and you switch to digital? be prepared because with your first few drawings it's either going to be the best you've ever drawn or it's gonna feel like you're picking up a pencil for the first time in your life all over again. both of these stages are temporary, and generally settle on an equal middle ground in a few days, at least until your hand's gotten used to the medium
my FIRST chance at digital art? drawing with my finger on my phone. it's far from ideal, as you can probably guess, but it got the job done while i played around with the things only digital art could do. the next step, still on mobile devices, was getting one of those pens for writing on your phone. no pressure sensitivity, accuracy was still shite, but it did allow me to draw in a way that was more similar to how i drew traditionally. try to check if your device has compatibility with digital pen accessories, you might get one that's a bit more sophisticated than literally just a tube with a flat nib that works through normal touchscreen. i bought the sketchbook app back when it was still property of Autodesk. I haven't updated it since, so i have no idea how the new company is handling it, but it was a pretty solid app when i used it
if you already want to go full drawing tablet then DO NOT, for the love of god, DO NOT buy a screen tablet. i promise, drawing on a screenless one is in no way harder or more unnatural, you hand-eye coordination adapts to it very quickly. they're super cheap compared to screen tablets, more portable and better suited for a beginner. my first serius tablet was a wacom intuos back in the time when wacom partnered with clip studio paint, which was a DEAL because now i have a lifetime access to it despite having bought the tablet years ago and the PRO version of the program costing like 50 fucking dollars. definitely keep your eyes peeled if they do anything like that again because it's very much worth it, but if they don't you can also choose a cheaper brand. fuck wacom, go small corp.
for pc/laptop art programs your best bet in the open source scene is 100% krita. it has a couple of unique settings that make it weird to draw on for people who are used to "standard" professional art programs (which is the reason I don't go back to it anymore), but if you have no experience with any other art program, then absolutely go check it out, it won't be an issue. it's got a thriving community that keeps updating and adding stuff, so they're not gonna drop you off out of nowhere. as for the drawing itself? once again that's gonna depend on where in your art journey you are. it's been wayy too long for me to remember good videos for absolute beginners, but if you've got some of the bases down then proko and sinix design are some of the best teachers i can recommend wholeheartedly. i do have a couple more people on YouTube in mind, but I haven't seen their work in a while, so i wouldn't wanna risk sending you in the wrong direction.
one final tip that's worked out very well for me. y'know what's one of the best things you can watch? drawfee. animator vs cartoonist. pros animating in gartic phone. not only because karina and julia are the funniest motherfuckers on earth, but because seeing people's drawing process in real time (coupled with the sense of companionship of watching a group of friends have fun for your entertainment) actually puts you in the mindset to draw yourself and lets you study their work in a way that simply viewing the finished product never could.
trace trace trace, trace references, trace photos, trace art you like (but don't post it) and do it smartly ie try to figure out WHAT you're tracing, the shapes you're actually putting on paper and how they interact with one another and their environment. take your time, experiment with different techniques, take a break when you need to, watch your neck and back posture, draw from your your shoulders, not your wrist, those 30s "do this and this and this to draw this thing" style tutorials that don't explain the thought process behind those passages are a scam so fuck em, make mistakes make SO MANY MISTAKES, then learn from them, grow from them and make some more.
oh, and have fun, of course.
welcome to art :D

Tried Autodesk Sketchbook for a hot sec for my tablet (android tablet), cuz I noticed it came with a pen, so I was like, well shit, I guess I could draw with it??  Here’s Elliott.  This actually might be my fav pic I’ve drawn of him.
Then they immediately updated the app and took out the Copic colors.... :(
If you know any other cool android art programs....hmu.

Devlog #82
Hoo boy hi-ho Wudge here. I had a Week last week, let me tell ya.
Tumblr media
^If you wanna know how I’ve been, that sums it up.
Most notable update - I now have a new laptop. It’s exactly what I needed, because my poor 4-year-old lenovo yoga has been dying a slow hardware death (long black strips of dead pixels spreading across the screen, increasingly broken buttons, bits breaking off whenever I move it...)
Anyway, I’ve been able to use my tablet again! Case in point, a babby Mia I started for that infographic:

And progress on the Clammy Lady (before and after, for your viewing convenience):

I’ve definitely learned a lot and have improved with my art, but I’d like to note that the steadier lines are largely due to using better equipment and programs - I've always had a fairly steady contour with real life traditional art, after all.
I’ll still reference the 2019 to see if there’s some sort of charm I still need to incorporate into her new version, but so far so good, I think.
And I wrote AAAAA LOTTTT last Friday. 8AM to 9PM with a nap in the middle. I took a well-deserved break over the weekend and I’ll be up and at em this week, too. And uh, I started transferring a lot of files to the new laptop, which is overwhelming... but necessary!
Phew, I think just about I covered everything.
Stay safe and keep warm,
Wudge.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you! I finally finished with a project that I've been working for a while for this festive season. Here we have Rudolph and Clarice from the Rankin/Bass version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the two you deer flying together through a starry night sky. Clarice being capable of flight is something depicted in the CGI sequel of this movie; I thought that was really cool and used the idea on my picture. This is the first time that I've drawn deer characters so I hope that they look alright. I think that the hardest part was getting Rudolph's nose to glow and reflecting the light. 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 20, 21, 29, 30 (So sorry for the question dump!)
1. Autodesk Sketchbook Express when I first got my tablet. Photoshop Elements and Paint Tool SAI I don’t use for regular drawing anymore; but they still get irregular use for other purposes (image edits and drawings for academic works; i.e. flowcharts for programming).
On a similar note, while I use Clip Studio Paint for practically all of my regular drawing nowadays, I did use that program years ago for a short animation; before going to try and learn Opentoonz. I would like to return to it at least once, for a colored animation; since I’m still trying to get over OpenToonz’ learning curve.
2. It’s not something I really think of much, but I guess I draw characters facing right more often that I do drawing them facing left.
3. This is a stretch / loose interpretation. But even though I haven’t drawn / posted any new ones as of late. I would say my videogame level maps / level design draw their roots from my earliest (traditional) drawings when I was younger, which were maps of highway / interstates. I sometimes still think about doing a true “throwback piece” to those days and draw a new highway map.
4. I would really like to get back to drawing more detailed environments like I used to do when I first started getting into digital art. But I have trouble getting started in any meaningful way; and the newer landscapes I do are still simpler compared to my earlier stuff. I imagine part of the problem is that my earlier, more detailed landscapes were traditional drawings on paper, so maybe I was more willing to spend more time filling in/adding blanks compared to digital? I’m still trying to work it out.
8. I have a bunch of art and videogame concepts / projects I have that are perpetual shelf occupants, stuff that I might go back and tinker with, others that go untouched for years. Some are lucky to get rescued and either finished or reworked to finally see the light of day. I imagine at some point I’m going to have to essentially “clean out the closet” and decide what stays or goes.
10. Tall boots! They’ve kinda always been a mainstay for me.
11. It varies between music and podcasts (which are typically movie reviews). Right now I think I’ve hit a regular track where if I’m trying to draw something new or develop a concept; I listen to music for inspiration (which varies a lot—videogame instrumentals, jazz, R&B, alternative, piano instrumentals, mashups, etc.). If I have a concrete art idea that I just need to develop into a finished product (i.e. doing construction, coloring, etc.).
12. I don’t think I have any, since I keep trying to vary my approach in constructing bodies. Each of them tend to be somewhat difficult for me, at least in terms of getting the proportions right. I suppose drawing arms and legs are what I have the easiest time with.
13. I don’t really have any that comes to mind. There’s probably some, I could certainly name particular genres or studios; but not individual creators.
16. I’m not sure, admittedly. I guess that I would probably be pretty good with fanart (and likely would be more popular than I currently and historically have been). It’s not so much I don’t like drawing fanart, than it is that it’s mainly not been my focus. It’s something that I’ve previously said that I’ve been hoping to rectify in recent years, hopefully this year.
20. Honestly, I don’t know what I (used to) draw that would be considered difficult. I guess drawing level design would probably be up there; at least in the sense of it probably being difficult to plan out, or figure out a way to try and make it engaging or interesting. Like I said earlier, my interest for drawing highways I imagine was a prelude to drawing maps/course design. My parents like to say that I should have become an architect.
21. Highly detailed aesthetics for character designs and environments, usually of a realistic style. Although I try to shuffle my aesthetics around regularly, I’d say I usually do hit a limit with my art where it’s either at least stylized and/or simple to some degree.
29. Not sure. I guess the closest thing I can say to answer this question is that there’s a bunch of things I like and/or outright love, but I don’t regularly create fanart of. (As I said previously, I normally don’t draw much fanart in general, and I’d like to try and change that this year.)
30. There have been some pieces I’ve done that I’m proud of, mainly because I put extra touches of flourish on and/or think are probably among my best (recent) works; but I can’t say they have gotten any notable attention (especially here on tumblr, which as of late gets less traction compared to Twitter and sometimes deviantArt). A recent piece I feel has been overlooked a bit is included below (original post to it here); but here are links to some other pieces from last year I feel were overlooked here on this site.
