honestly in light of all the things coming up in the Dreamkazpar issue:
dear young and underage Overwatch, especially OWL fans
please be cautious around adults. both in fandom (especially if they are big name fans) and also on the creator side. and I am not saying this to try to ham anyone’s fun, but please. the majority may be perfectly nice people, but a) you can never know and b) there are predators in every single fandom/scene.
I have seen this back when I was a minor in fandom spaces and even with all the awareness we have nowadays it has honestly not really gotten any better. Today I have an almost teenage-aged daughter who is also into OWL and you can probably guess that this is horrifying on several levels.
there will always be adults that are deliberately preying on young people. and additionally there is a bunch of adults with simply no sense of boundaries on top of it. and it should be their responsibility to not expose you to anything harmful but some of them don’t care and some of them are literal shit.
so please be careful. check for red flags. don’t be afraid to cut contact immediately if you feel uncomfortable. talk to other people about it. an adult that you trust in your offline life, friends, anyone. do not, DO NOT EVER let any adult convince you to “keep a secret” in terms of your interactions.
i know firsthand how fucking flattering it is, how good it feels to the own ego when someone so much older, someone you look up to or someone you adore tells you you are “so much smarter and more mature than others of your age” or that they “don’t even feel like talking to someone younger when talking to you”.
These tactics tend to work especially well on people who feel alienated from people in their age group sometimes. we soak that shit up like water in the desert.
Honestly one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you in regard to OWL players specifically? As harsh as this sounds: Don’t talk to them. Don’t chat with them, don’t interact with them in any way outside of official venues like fanmeets etc. They are adult (if sometimes very immature) men and no matter what they might say - you have actually nothing in common with them. The format of streaming makes them seem accessible but you actually don’t know the person behind the pc at all, no matter what watching their stream will make you think. they are strangers. and any interaction that goes beyond regular fan interaction should be taken with a huuuuuge grain of salt. And even if the 14 year old you is convinced you can handle and navigate all this just fine - believe me, the 20 year old you will probably look back one day and ask how the hell adults can be this horrible and why on earth no one ever stopped things.
tl:dr people are shit - please be careful and take care of yourself first!

Dreamkazper of the Boston Uprising has been suspended indefinitely due to recent allegations brought against him. These allegations include propositioning an underage girl. The Overwatch League and Boston Uprising have launched an investigation into the matter but it is incredibly unlikely Dreamkazper will be returning to the team. No matter how the whole DK situation turns out, this just shows again that we don’t know these people.
We know things about them because they tell us and we even might find out things on accident but that doesn’t mean you know them on a personal level. I know that with the OWL players it is especially bad, because in contrast to other “famous people” they are easily reachable via twitter, discord, twitch etc.. But in contrast to other people you find online and befriend, they need to have an actual interest at keeping people they don’t know in real life at a distance (that doesn’t mean you should disregard any positive interaction you have with them, but remember that it isn’t an equal relationship).
Liking and OWL player because you think they have great skill or because they seem like a cool person is fine. You can even go ahead and defend them when it comes to the stuff you can judge, like performance in a game.
But all these “fans” everywhere thinking they know the players and using this knowledge as justification to make these people out to be some kind of impeccable beings or consider them their “precious babys” etc.. You aren’t doing yourself or anybody around you any kind of favours. They will not be able to meet the standards you set because it is an impossible and cruel thing to ask someone to be without faults. So when they fail, there are the fans who accept and change the view they had of the person, which mostly only hurts themselves and sadly is the good scenario. Because the bad scenario is that these people have invested so much feelings/trust/emotions/time into these people that they refuse to take a step back and reconsider. So not only do they continue have these unhealthy relationships, they lash out at anybody pointing out that the person they consider to be impeccable did something horrible and that often means targeting the victims.
So to anybody who is a fan of these new kind of easily accessible stars. Take a look at how you view the relationship you have with this person and the person themselves. Remember to think of them as a human beings with flaws you are not aware of (especially when making judgements on morals or character of a person). Nobody, with a brain, will judge you for liking a famous personality before a bad fact about them is revealed, they will judge you for how you react to the news and how your feelings/actions towards the person changes.
