apnscp won’t fix all of your woes; you still need to be smart about whom you host and what you host, but it is a step in the right direction. apnscp is not a replacement for a qualified system administrator. It is however a much better alternative to emerging panels in this market.

Installation

Use apnscp Customizer to configure your server as you’d like. See INSTALL.md for installation + usage.

Monitoring installation apnscp will provision your server and this takes around 45 minutes to 2 hours to complete the first time. You can monitor installation real-time from the terminal:

tail -f /root/apnscp-bootstrapper.log

Post Install If you entered an email address while customizing (apnscp_admin_email) and the server isn’t in a RBL, then you will receive an email with your login information. If you don’t get an email after 2 hours, log into the server and check the status:

tail -n30 /root/apnscp-bootstrapper.log

The last line should be similar to: 2019-01-30 18:39:02,923 p=3534 u=root | localhost : ok=3116 changed=1051 unreachable=0 failed=0

If failed=0, everything is set! You can reset the password and refer back to the login information to access the panel or reset your credentials. Post-install will welcome you with a list of helpful commands to get started as well. You may want to change -n30 to -n50!

Installation FAQ

Is a system hostname necessary?

No. It can be set at a later date with cpcmd config_set net.hostname new.host.name. A valid hostname is necessary for mail to reliably relay and valid SSL issuance. apnscp can operate without either.

Do you support Ubuntu?

No. This is a highly specialized platform. Red Hat has a proven track record of honoring its 10 year OS lifecycles, which from experience businesses like to move every 5-7 years. Moreover certain facilities like tuned, used to dynamically optimize your server, are unique to Red Hat and its derivatives. As an aside, apnscp also provides a migration facility for seamless zero downtime migrations.

How do I update the panel?

It will update automatically unless disabled. cpcmd config_set apnscp.update-policy major will set the panel to update up to major version changes. cpcmd config_set system.update-policy default will set the OS to update packages as they’re delivered. These are the default panel settings. Supported Web Apps will update within 24 hours of a major version release and every Wednesday/Sunday for asset updates (themes/plugins). An email is sent to the contact assigned for each site (siteinfo,email service variable).

If your update policy is set to “false” in apnscp-vars.yml, then you can manually update the panel by running upcp and OS via yum update -y. If you’ve opted out of 1-click updates, then caveat emptor.

Mail won’t submit from the server on 25/587 via TCP.

This is by design. Use sendmail to inject into the mail queue via binary or authenticate with a user account to ensure ESMTPA is used. Before disabling, and as one victimized by StealRat, I’d urge caution. Sockets are opaque: it’s impossible to discern the UID or PID on the other end.

To disable:

cpcmd config_set apnscp.bootstrapper postfix_relay_mynetworks true

upcp -sb mail/configure-postfix

config_set manages configuration scopes. Scopes are discussed externally. upcp is a wrapper to update the panel, reset the panel (--reset), run integrity checks (-b) with optional tags. -s skips migrations that are otherwise compulsory if present during a panel update; you wouldn’t want an incomplete platform!

My connection is firewalled and I can’t send mail directly!

apnscp provides simple smart host support via configuration scope.

How do I uninstall MySQL or PostgreSQL?

Removing either would render the platform inoperable. Do not do this. PostgreSQL handles mail, long-term statistics, and backup account metadata journaling. MySQL for everything else, including panel data.

Oof. apnscp is taking up 1.5 GB of memory!

There are two important tunables, has_low_memory and clamav_enabled. has_low_memory is a macro that disables several components including:

Licenses are tied to the server but may be transferred to a new server. Once transferred from the server apnscp will become deactivated on the server, which means your sites will continue to operate but apnscp can no longer help you manage your server, as well as deploy automatic updates. A copy of the license can be made either by copying /usr/local/apnscp/config/license.pem or License > <u>Download License</u> in the top-right corner. Likewise to install the license on a new machine just replace config/license.pem with your original copy.

Drupal 7 Performance Optimizations

Here are some links to good resources for Drupal 7 performance configurations and optimizations. 

One quick note, disable + uninstall and remove unused modules, and if a module source code has been removed without performing a module disable and uninstall it can really affect the performance as Drupal 7 scans the entire module directory looking for the missing module during a fresh page load, un-cached.

Also for the large images, use image styles matching the size of the image that is displayed smaller using CSS, this can really affect the time for a page load to finish as the huge images all load, even though they are displayed much smaller.

If you are a blogger, or niche or affiliate marketer the Firefox browser can save you time and make you money. There are free extensions available that you can quickly install to help you do all kinds of things that you normally need custom software for.

First – if you blog or own a website you should already be using the Firefox web browser. If you aren’t, download and install it now and make it your default browser. It’s free, it’s open-source, and the same extensions are available for everyone regardless if you’re on Windows, a Mac, or Linux.

Next, download and install this list of list of free Firefox extensions – and then follow along below with my descriptions of how to use them. I’ll give you two lists of extensions, one “must have” and the second are “optional” depending on your needs and the type of web work you do. Please note, “your mileage may vary” and the more extensions you install the more memory Firefox needs to run. You can install and uninstall any of these add-ons at any time by going to “Tools -> Add-Ons” in your Firefox browser. All of my working PC’s have 1-2GB of RAM, if you have an older system with less memory you may choose to only run the essential extensions that work best for you. Oh, also if you work in more than one location or on more than one PC you may choose to run “Portable Apps” (just Google it) on a memory stick thumb drive.

In order, the options on this example are your Google page rank, a number of indexed pages in google, the number of backlinks listed in Yahoo, link density in Yahoo, indexed pages in MSN live search, Alexa ranking, an age of the domain, links in del.icio.we link to whois, link to source code view, link to custom link density report, the number of internal links, and the number of external links. This is an insane amount of information all in one place, and very, very handy even if you aren’t doing a lot of “SEO” work. It’s so handy I think every blogger should have this installed. If you are an affiliate or niche marketer and just now learning about the power of this plugin – you’ll never be without it again. There is another option for an “SEOToolbar”, which displays fixed in the top of your browser (with the same stats) just like the Google toolbar. I prefer to have the floating one on the page.

But wait “there’s more”! SEOQuake also enhances your Google search results! The first modification that’s made to a Google SERP is the buttons at the top of the page to “save to file” or “append to file”. That’s right – you can search Google for keywords, and save the SEO data to a CSV file so you can import it into a spreadsheet for analysis. While this may only be used by advanced users, the SEOQuake stats are displayed under each and every search result. Before Google notebook, I was an unorganized mess. I stored all my blog and website ideas and “to-do” lists on post-it notes and scrap pieces of paper. That and lots and lots of text files. Once you install this extension – all that will change. It sets up an online “notebook” that you can use for notes, research, and works in progress. You can work in a full web page, or a small box in the bottom right of your browser by clicking “open notebook” in your status bar. You can set up separate sections, and pages, and headings, and sort multiple ways. You can drag and drop, copy and delete – but probably the greatest feature is the ability to read a web page, select some text (or image, or anything) on a web page, right-click it with your mouse and select “send to notebook” and BAM! you’ve stored it for later use. This completely stops having dozens of Firefox tabs open for days and keeping notes all over the place. Being web based and part of your Google account, you can access your notebook from any computer anywhere anytime. You can even send completed documents or works-in-progress to Google Docs at any time.

Oh – I almost forgot the best feature! Do you work or collaborate with others online? You can “share” a notebook with anyone (that has a Google account) and collaborate with them. This is AWESOME if you work on a team online for web design, niche marketing, mentoring, consulting, or blogging!

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon is a web-based social media service that lets you “discover” websites you like. Once you enter some keywords in your profile when you click “stumble” it just displays a random site in it’s favored index. Then you vote on it thumbs up or thumbs down style. Besides stumbling, you can vote on sites by using the toolbar as you surf the web, and if you’re the first to find a site you can give it a short written review and keywords to “tag” it in the right categories. So you have to have the toolbar to vote on sites, to stumble, but also you can use it to interact with other StumbleUpon members and “friends”. Once you have found some “friends” in your profile you can use the SU toolbar to “send” them pages they might like. If you can’t already see the handwriting on the wall – most bloggers use StumbleUpon for marketing. It’s a way to connect with other bloggers, and many have no problem asking you to “stumble” their post or site. You can trade stumbles or reviews, SU is a great way to not only build community but also to get traffic.

Once you enter some keywords in your profile when you click “stumble” it just displays a random site in it’s favored index. Then you vote on it thumbs up or thumbs down style. Besides stumbling, you can vote on sites by using the toolbar as you surf the web, and if you’re the first to find a site you can give it a short written review and keywords to “tag” it in the right categories. So you have to have the toolbar to vote on sites, to stumble, but also you can use it to interact with other stumbleupon members and “friends”. Once you have found some “friends” in your profile you can use the SU toolbar to “send” them pages they might like. If you can’t already see the handwriting on the wall – most bloggers use StumbleUpon for marketing. It’s a way to connect with other bloggers, and many have no problem asking you to “stumble” their post or site. You can trade stumbles or reviews, SU is a great way to not only build community but also to get traffic.

You can take notes, write drafts, quickly publish – for many people it makes blogging more fun and easier to do. Many people report blogging a lot more once this is installed.

FireShot: Fireshot creates screenshots for you right in your browser just by clicking a button. No more opening up Photoshop or Fireworks or Paint Shop Pro. Unlike other extensions that just take a screenshot, Fireshot has graphic editing tools and you can insert text and annotate pics. You can choose to capture the whole web page or just part of it, and it will even help you upload the pic to your web site or email it to somebody for you. If you take a lot of screenshots when blogging – fireshot is for you.

ColorZilla: If you do a lot of web design or CSS work you find yourself looking for the right colors all the time. ColorZilla gives you a little eyedropper so you can get the color of anything you see – anytime, without having to visit a web based color chart, color generator, or firing up Dreamweaver. You get both hex and HTML color codes, and it has a built in palette browser as well. It has DOM spying features, which basically means you can get quick info on the color of any element on a web page. If you deal with color in your sites, this is a great plugin as well.

Lee Rowlands felt that some of the noise going on around the Drupal 8 developer experience didn't touch on all the wins that we're getting from the changes in Drupal 8. He wrote a blog post and gave a presentation at the Melbourne users group outlining some of the many ways Drupal 8 will be a great experience for developers.

"I work all day on Drupal 7 sites. Drupal 8 is where I get to do the fun stuff. There are a lot of things in Drupal 8 that I couldn't wait for, dealing with shortcomings in Drupal 7 on a daily basis. 'I want it now' kind of stuff (I picture Lee having a tantrum at this point), in particular the plugin stuff, and the entity filed API changes. That was my motivation for that talk.

A Gr8 New Logo

After a process of community input and a final choice by Dries, there is an official Drupal 8 logo! Dries unveiled the design during his keynote at DrupalCon Prague earlier today. The logo is done in a “flat” design and features an oblique number “8” inside a slightly forward-tilting drop accompanied by the Drupal wordmark.

The “8” shape can also be used independent of the wordmark. The design, created by the talented folks at Mogdesign, is a fine representation of the balance of forward-looking elements and established concepts embodied by Drupal 8. The logo usage guidelines will be on Drupal.org next week. In the meantime you can grab the files here.

Drupal 8 is planned for launch at the end of this year and one of the most exciting features is “in-place editing” which will make updating content much easier.

This is good news for less tech-savvy users such as bloggers, business owners and regular employees assigned to manage and update website content.

Installation

Use apnscp Customizer to configure your server as you'd like. See INSTALL.md for installation + usage.

Monitoring installation apnscp will provision your server and this takes around 45 minutes to 2 hours to complete the first time. You can monitor installation real-time from the terminal:

tail -f /root/apnscp-bootstrapper.log

Post Install If you entered an email address while customizing (apnscp_admin_email) and the server isn't in a RBL, then you will receive an email with your login information. If you don't get an email after 2 hours, log into the server and check the status:

tail -n30 /root/apnscp-bootstrapper.log

The last line should be similar to: 2019-01-30 18:39:02,923 p=3534 u=root | localhost : ok=3116 changed=1051 unreachable=0 failed=0

If failed=0, everything is set! You can reset the password and refer back to the login information to access the panel or reset your credentials. Post-install will welcome you with a list of helpful commands to get started as well. You may want to change -n30 to -n50!

No. It can be set at a later date with cpcmd config_set net.hostname new.host.name. A valid hostname is necessary for mail to reliably relay and valid SSL issuance. apnscp can operate without either.

Do you support Ubuntu?

No. This is a highly specialized platform. Red Hat has a proven track record of honoring its 10 year OS lifecycles, which from experience businesses like to move every 5-7 years. Moreover certain facilities like tuned, used to dynamically optimize your server, are unique to Red Hat and its derivatives. As an aside, apnscp also provides a migration facility for seamless zero downtime migrations.

How do I update the panel?

It will update automatically unless disabled. cpcmd config_set apnscp.update-policy major will set the panel to update up to major version changes. cpcmd config_set system.update-policy default will set the OS to update packages as they're delivered. These are the default panel settings. Supported Web Apps will update within 24 hours of a major version release and every Wednesday/Sunday for asset updates (themes/plugins). An email is sent to the contact assigned for each site (siteinfo,email service variable).

If your update policy is set to "false" in apnscp-vars.yml, then you can manually update the panel by running upcp and OS via yum update -y. If you've opted out of 1-click updates, then caveat emptor.

Mail won't submit from the server on 25/587 via TCP.

This is by design. Use sendmail to inject into the mail queue via binary or authenticate with a user account to ensure ESMTPA is used. Before disabling, and as one victimized by StealRat, I'd urge caution. Sockets are opaque: it's impossible to discern the UID or PID on the other end.

To disable:

cpcmd config_set apnscp.bootstrapper postfix_relay_mynetworks true

upcp -sb mail/configure-postfix

config_set manages configuration scopes. Scopes are discussed externally. upcp is a wrapper to update the panel, reset the panel (--reset), run integrity checks (-b) with optional tags. -s skips migrations that are otherwise compulsory if present during a panel update; you wouldn't want an incomplete platform!

My connection is firewalled and I can't send mail directly!

apnscp provides simple smart host support via configuration scope.

How do I uninstall MySQL or PostgreSQL?

Removing either would render the platform inoperable. Do not do this. PostgreSQL handles mail, long-term statistics, and backup account metadata journaling. MySQL for everything else, including panel data.

clamav_enabled disables ClamAV as well as upload scrubbing and virus checks via Web > Web Apps. This is more of a final line of defense. So long as you are the only custodian of sites on your server, it's safe to disable.

Once transferred from the server apnscp will become deactivated on the server, which means your sites will continue to operate but apnscp can no longer help you manage your server, as well as deploy automatic updates. A copy of the license can be made either by copying /usr/local/apnscp/config/license.pem or License > <u>Download License</u> in the top-right corner. Likewise to install the license on a new machine just replace config/license.pem with your original copy.
