the finale really said Fraser is a story, an ideal, a man alone in the great north, untouchable and yet. There are people yearning to touch him, always just a little out of reach. And he touched the real world even if he doesn't know it, and now he's leaving (all his people, and us) (even as Welsh slugs someone for him and Frobisher salutes him)

Fraser saying he never connected with anyone, and yet everyone everywhere making sure he landed softly (DELMAR FROM GRADE FOUR EVEN? DELMAR REMEMBERED YOUR NAME BENTON???)

Fuck this stupid show, I love it gotta watch it all again. Fraser really truly Mary Poppins and Dief is his id. dS begins with Fraser and Dief and it ends with Fraser and Dief. Like Rayk will have his adventure and find himself but he is as much a man of the cold as RayV and Meg. FRASER LEAVES THEM ALL EVENTUALLY, like he does us the audience T_T

Dief & Fraser will never grow old (in our memories) and they'll never die because they're stories that we will always always tell ourselves (and still are, thirty years later)

Coming & Going - Pilot & CotW

(Stacked Rewatch/Timestamp Roulette Art Challenge)

It's a break week in the dS stacked rewatch, but since next week's schedule has three episodes including the pilot episode (and I'll be a bit busy), I decided to handle the pilot in advance. So, a pair of bookend landscapes: the very beginning of Fraser's Chicago journey and the very end where, led by Diefenbaker, he and Ray Kowalski have already dog-sledded into their happily-ever-after Arctic sunrise. These pictures are small, about 12x16 cm.

I finally tested my second set of oil pastels (Mungyo Gallery) that I bought around New Year. They're much softer than the other set I've used so far (Van Gogh), and to my surprise they work well on a type of mix media paper where the VGs were disastrous. Also, my first impression is that they photograph better than the VGs. I'm pretty fond of the drier feel of the VGs, though.

A House Is Not A Home, justbreathe80. They were up to their knees in snow and holy shit it was cold, but Fraser had a smile on his face that Ray had never, ever seen, and he knew, in his gut, that Fraser wasn't coming back to Chicago. Ever.

That means no F/K shippers saying to skip the first two seasons - and they STILL do that! They probably want to see RayV erased entirely from Due South. They don't care that he is Benny's best friend and would still be his best friend even after Benny starting having sex with Kowalski! They think Fraser doesn't need RayV because he has Kowalski!

The original COTW script was won by a fan at a 2008 convention. The ending had both Rays in Chicago and being friendly to each other, and Fraser, Thatcher and Turnbull in Canada. It implied that Thatcher went to Fraser to possibly start a romantic relationship with him. There was no mention of Stella and no RayV with Stella. Search Fanlore for the COTW wiki to find out more.

Casualty S31 E17 - What Lurks In the Heart

Dylan is a rock star.  That could be the entire synopsis!

I started the episode thinking, Oh, God, I am Dylan.  Sitting in the dark, brooding - check.  Ignoring the phone - check.  Ignoring the door - check.  Pulling a blanket over your head to shut the world out - double check! 

But then, I ended the episode wanting to be Dylan.  The way he totally put aside the fact that Dickhead Seb had not only made him the subject of gossip for the entire department, not only made horrendous allegations about him, but essentially done all this knowing it would wreck his entire career, and just went in there and mentored Seb, supported him and encouraged him!  Then helped him stand up to his Equally-Dickhead Father, and recommended him for another job, knowing there’s no way he could remain at Holby at the current time. 

Also, he didn’t even look happy when Elle told him that Seb had retracted the allegations - he seemed more worried about Seb.  I repeat, Dylan is a rock star, and pretty much my current favourite character.

I feel like I should make brief mention of Seb here too.  It felt like they were trying to give Seb some sort of redemption moment.  When we finally got to see his father support him (over the Dylan allegation), it was as if he’d had to tell this lie to finally and for once get his fathers support and approval.  This, of course, driven home by his father’s vitriol at the end of the ep when Dylan was talking to Seb (although TBH, if I had a child who falsely accused someone of sexual harrassment, I’d chew them out too.  Just possibly not as viciously!)  And of course, the main redemption being Seb finally admitting to Elle that he lied.  I’m not sure how well it played out.  I admit, I am a softy, and may have felt a pang, but at the end of the day, I still feel like the guy is a total waste of space, and good riddance (for now, at least).

Final comments on the Dylan/Seb storyline:

I loved seeing Max continue to try and stand up for his friend.  Max is a pretty awesome character (I miss Zoe - sob), and woefully underused these days.

I severely and strongly dislike Louise.  She is purely and simply a self centred bitch, who loves to spread gossip and misery.  From continuing on her ‘guilty until proven innocent’ stance at the beginning of the episode, to her innocent little about-turn at the end of the episode, I just wanted to slap her smug, judgemental face. (As ever, NO disrespect to the actress.  Merely the character)

Ric Griffin!  I do enjoy the occasional small cross over!

Other storylines after the cut

COTW 1 (kid in care finding his real father) was done really well this week.  Despite as ever being designed to showcase the chosen main character’s struggles, it was an interesting story, and a good illustration of the prejudices that people with DS or other things which mark them as ‘different’ have to endure.

COTW 2 - (citizenship marriage turned real) fluff.

Connie on the warpath.  I wouldn’t like to be Elle right now.  Although being a bit hand-flappy and pleady when Connie was accusing her of malpractice, probably not the best stance.  Next time, Elle, try for firm and decisive.

Ethan-Cal-Alicia triangle.  Well, I've not kept my thoughts quiet on this one.  It’s going to get boring very quickly.  Having said that, this week kind of worked.  Probably because it was a step forward.  Past behaviours notwithstanding, I do prefer Alicia with Ethan, I think he’s far more her type of person than this current wild-child phase of hers would imply.  HOWEVER, since he seems to be trying to entice her into a relationship - and thereby drive and potentially permanent wedge between himself and his brother, I do think Ethan should be having a conversation with her about his Huntingtons.  It could conceivably be a deal breaker, so if he’s going to lose the support (stealing, alley-catting, belittling) of his brother, maybe he should get that out there first.

I also felt a tiny bit sorry for Cal too.  I think he does love Alicia, however much he pretends otherwise.  And I recall how badly he went off the rails when the last woman he was obssessed with betrayed him.  I just hope the story doesn’t drag for too many weeks.

It's only your opinion that Kowalski actually stays in Canada with Fraser after COTW. That's the slaser's view. Try looking as someone who doesn't ship F/K. There's nothing canon about Kowalski staying with Fraser permanently. And there's no proof that he was closer to Fraser than RayV or a better friend to Fraser as RayV. I'm tired of the "F/K as endgame" view. It's NOT CANON.
