Research Assistant for Developmental Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at the University of Maryland

The University of Maryland Developmental Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab directed by Dr. Elizabeth Redcay (www.dscn.umd.edu) is seeking a full-time Research Assistant (formal title: Faculty Specialist) beginning Summer 2021. The DSCN lab investigates the neural and cognitive bases of typical and atypical development, with a focus on social cognition and social motivation. Our methods include functional and structural MRI as well as behavioral measures with adults and children. This is an excellent position for anyone who would like to pursue graduate work in cognitive, clinical, or developmental neuroscience. We encourage applicants with a background in psychology, cognitive science, computer science, engineering, or related fields to apply.

Responsibilities will include data collection and analyses of MRI and behavioral studies with children and adults. There may be opportunities for presenting data at conferences and co-authoring publications. The ideal applicant will have experience with behavioral and neuroimaging data collection and analyses and/or programming languages (e.g., python, matlab) and linux environments.

Salary will be competitive commensurate with experience and includes health benefits. Application review will begin immediately. The whole discussion surrouding the validity of people kin / having fictives from popular media is so uncomfortable to me (as someone who is kin and part of a system). While, sure, there are abusive people out there who use popular media as a means of accessing victims, using the actions of a few to justify fakeclaiming (whether you’re saying “they may genuinely believe they’re kin” or not, it’s still fakeclaiming at the end of the day) people who may not talk much about those kintypes for one reason or another is… not a good look.

I don’t talk much about some of my kintypes (both from popular and obscure sources) anymore, but they're still actual kintypes; people are allowed to decide not to talk about those kintypes for whatever reason they so choose. It's their decision as to whether or not they were right about it being a kintype, no one else's, especially not somewhere like here. The only thing this sort of thing will do is further make people feel uncomfortable in what little kin spaces we have left, because they're going to feel like they'll be fakeclaimed for kinning from popular media. Not to mention: the reason you see a huge number of kin in the first few months of a source release here is because that's when the vast majority of people's memories are going to surface, so they're more likely to be feeling everything much more intensely and need to vent about stuff more.

It's even more frustrating when people are talking about systems, because the complexities of when and why fictives are split and headmates go dormant is much, much more than just "well it's popular" and "now it's not". Yes, people can absolutely use being a system as a means for abuse, but we as systems are marginalised enough as is, even in the kin community. Giving others ammo to use against us is just going to harm us. Especially in a community that includes both singlets and systems.

Scrutinising kin / fictives from popular media isn't actually going to help any of the issues in our community; we need to start creating actually safe spaces where abuse is taken seriously and shit like fakeclaims (also regularly used for abuse) aren't tolerated. There are better ways to keep the community safe than coming up with arbitrary things to shit on people for. Again. Because that's all this is.
