Apologies in Dog Sees God

HI it's me again. I like dog sees god again. i hope everyone remembers me

So recently I've been doing a whole lot of thinking specifically about CB's character in DSG, and specifically his POV during/right after Viper's Nest. And you know what I realized, reading that scene over and over again?

CB apologizes a grand total of once to Beethoven in that whole scene, and what was that apology actually for? Not twisting Beethoven's arm behind his back in shop class. Not for standing idly by while CB's friends tormented Beethoven for what's probably been around 8/9 years at this point.

He apologizes for laughing at something Beethoven said. And then Beethoven apologizes back.

What's his response to the tormenting stuff?

It's not even for any of the major, obvious stuff! Of all the apologies in DSG -

3 are people telling CB they're sorry about his dog - Matt, Van, & Van's sister 1 is Tricia saying she's sorry she & Marcy didn't come to the funeral 1 is above, CB apologizing to Beethoven for laughing at him

1 apology we get is a completely insincere one.

It's Matt telling Beethoven to go home. And the word sorry does make 2 more notable appearances in Nocturne.

First CB asks if BEETHOVEN is sorry for one of CB's actions. And only then does he say sorry - and then immediately pin the blame back on Beethoven. I thought that you wanted me to. Which is fucking insane for someone who has never once asked Beethoven (so far) if he actually WANTS to be kissed.

And then after this there are no more apologies. None in Mal Di Luna, Peer Counseling, Dear CB... none of it. Nobody apologizes to Beethoven any further, no sympathy is spared.

I think something this says about CB is he's still not over the fact that he used to bully Beethoven. He hasn't fully grown out of this mindset, he doesn't think he owes Beethoven any apologies. It was all just a game to him and everyone was just playing around. He doesn't understand what he put Beethoven through, and he doesn't really want to understand - wasn't taking Beethoven under his wing and under his protection enough? Why does he have to put any more work in? Why does he have to think about what he's done any further?

I think he also justifies it to himself because he wasn't always the one doing the torturing.

And again, CB tries to justify. We did it because you acted gay. We did it because we were just playing. I didn't do that, I just watched and didn't stop it.

And Beethoven tells him that's not enough, and CB just can't accept that.

And he never apologizes. He never fully takes accountability. Maybe he would have one day, but then Beethoven dies. And so he retreats back into that shell. He doesn't let himself live and learn because Beethoven didn't live!!! He will never learn!!!!!

ok this has kinda like always been how i interpreted things and then i looked literally anywhere else where people are talking about dog sees god and all the summaries are like pigpen and charlie brown and peppermint patty and marcie are COOL and POPULAR and BULLY the UNDERLING that is SCHROEDER. and that just like. doesnt feel right? like narratively that feels incorrect so im going to explain this now.

first ok. so this is also like a completely separate pet peeve of mine but the text literally never says that cb and matt play football like literally every single fucking source everywhere says. like matts page on the villains wiki says one of his hobbies is playing football and like. no???? they never???? say that????? like ok. we know their school HAS a football team (beethoven mentions it in the vipers nest) and we know cb and matt play SOME sport (matt mentions that they "shower together after practice" in the hangover) but the connection is never explicitly drawn between the two. in FACT beethovens line about the football team (below)

kind of like. goes against the idea that cb and matt are on the football team??? like hes talking to cb here i feel like if beethoven were to mention even sarcastically ogling a group that cb is apart of hed make some kind of comment about it. like this is before their whole thing gets resolved theyre still fighting when he says this line it would make complete sense for cb to say something about this. and like ok its peanuts right like just reminding everyone that its peanuts. you know what sport it would make more sense that charlie fucking brown plays like you know what sport it would seem logical for him to play oh i dont know fucking BASEBALL????? im realizing now that this is like a lot less relevant to my original idea than i thought but i still want to keep it here. i think its just kinda like. its not canon that theyre super popular stars of the football team for all we know they could be playing fucking tennis the fact that they play A Sport doesnt make them well liked. also it literally never says at any point that theyre even good even if they are on the football team they could be the worst players we dont fucking know!!! need i remind you of charlie browns only* experience with football

*besides youre in the super bowl charlie brown but that specials bad so were ignoring it. and its not like he was good at football in that either

and if you buy into the idea that they play baseball (which you should baseball is such an integral part of peanuts it makes the most sense) charlie brown (and pigpen for what its worth. also like everyone else too) is DOGSHIT at baseball like its an entire decades long running joke how fucking awful they are at baseball. "maybe he practiced and got better" hes terrible to his bones practice does nothing. heart

ok onto more substantial points. so if you buy into the interpretation that their childhood was just literally normal peanuts (which you should because its very funny) then you can assume that these guys have all known eachother since elementary school (and even if you dont there are multiple lines that reference them being friends as kids so point still stands). but also by virtue of dsg being a peanuts parody and a lot of the comedy just coming from "haha that s like from the comic strip :)" (I WILL TALK ABOUT THE INHERENT TRAGEDY OF THIS LATER) besides like. one guy. every single character mentioned is an established peanuts character. and like idk about you but my highschool is a LOT bigger than my elementary school. like. there are substantially more people there. what im trying to say that while not impossible it is fucking WEIRD to have a decently sized friendgroup that has not changed the slightest bit in almost a decade. what im getting at is these bitches are INSULAR!!!!!!!! they are extremely hyperfocused on an only think about people from their childhoods. i will get back to this

were coming back to beethoven now the thing is that hes in the exact same boat as everyone else. while we do know that its not just the main cast that are outwardly homophobic ("i only got called a queer 3 times ^_^!") it is consistently shown that the main perpetrators are the main cast, much more so than anyone else. beethoven posits that the only reason cb only got called queer is because everyones scared hell beat them up, but i do think its worth considering that the main cast are the only ones who would ever enact actual violence. beethoven is in the same situation, but moreso by force than by choice. hes forced to relive reminders of traumatic childhood events and forced to cling to the past BECAUSE the people that target him used to be his friends. theres a reason they were the only people in peer counseling.

like i said, there is a certain tragedy that comes with dsg being a peanuts parody. its because of the referential comedy that bert royal created a cast of characters so self centered and so hung up on the past that theyre still extremely fixated on the kinds of people they were and the drama they had and their feelings about eachother from when they were literally fucking 8 years old. and isnt that jsut so much more thematically interesting than "oohh popular kid bully gay unpopular kid ooohhhh" theyre all unreliable narrators!!!!!!!! theyre all sick freaks and everyone knows it!!!!!!!! there is no possible justification for their actions, theyre hypocrites plain and simple.

Christianity in Dog Sees God, Part 2

This post is about Christianity/Christian imagery and themes in Dog Sees God. In this post I discuss the themes of the afterlife and how each character interprets it within the play, as well as the actual afterlife revealed at the end. My next/final post will be my reading of how Beethoven, Matt, and CB mirror Jesus, Judas, and Peter. Which is a bit of reach but just trust me on that one.

Also please note, I am a non-practicing Orthodox Christian, and most of this stuff seems more in line with Protestant Christianity, so not exactly my wheelhouse but I'm looking at it as objectively as I can. If anyone can weigh in with further context I'd appreciate that a lot!

The Afterlife

The title of this post was maybe a little misleading as there's about 5 ideas of the afterlife in DSG and 2 are actually distinctly Christian, and the actual portrayal is like... vaguely Christian but doesn't really have to be any nomination. Though it's closest to what Beethoven speculates it to be, but not exactly because it's Christian, more because God in this play is Charles Schulz.

Oh yeah, God in this play is Charles Schulz (well, he signs off as CS, but we all know who that is) and CB is his pen pal. We all know it, but just getting that out of the way. Onto the 5 ideas of the afterlife presented to us! Starting with the Christian ones.

Tricia and Marcy

Marcy, at least, is vaguely Christian, and likely so is Tricia, and their belief in the afterlife is that there's one for people, but not animals. This is in contrast to Beethoven's idea, who quotes actual scripture as reasoning for his belief. Marcy and Tricia are ignorant & vapid, and don't even really recognize the book Marcy acts like she lives by the reason of. This is brought up again by Marcy saying the Bible probably says homosexuality is a sin in Salisbury Steak.

So Tricia and Marcy have a vapid, kinda Christian view of the afterlife, but they're not too sure about what actually goes on in it, like they're not sure about the rest of the Bible.

Beethoven

Beethoven is able to quote a whole chunk of scripture off the top of his head when CB asks, and his first scene with CB is titled after a Bible verse. He's pretty solidly firm on the idea that the afterlife is Heaven, because, quote, "there has to be some reward for living through this." :( aw.

In fact, Beethoven has one of the most concrete ideas of religion in the whole show, and the most concrete idea of Christianity. And in the end, he's the one proven right in his idea of what the afterlife looks like, where there are both humans and animals - though as I said, less Christian, more Charles Schulz.

Now for the non-Christian interpretations!

CB's Sister

This week CB's sister has chosen to be Wiccan, and is one of the 2 characters who believe in the possibility of rebirth after death (the other being Van).

Not sure what exactly to say about this, except the fact that she probably didn't believe in this last week when she was Baptist, lol.

Van

Van has the next most concrete definition of the afterlife, that being the Buddhist concept of nirvana.

I find it interesting that CB's sister and Van, who in the Peanuts comic strip are both younger than the rest of the main cast, are the two who believe in reincarnation. Though Van has his foot in the door with the others, since reincarnation isn't all he believes in, there's primarily the whole nirvana thing.

I also find it interesting that they are the 2 with the most recently developed ideas of religion, CB's sister figuring her view out probably just a few days ago when she started her phase and Van himself describing his Buddhism as "a new development", whereas Matt claims to have thought about his explanation "many times", and Marcy, Tricia, and Beethoven have likely been Christian their whole lives.

Matt

Matt speaks directly against the Bible in one case, though it's because he's super mad.

Still, his idea of the afterlife doesn't really align with Christianity either, and in fact not really any major world religion. It's very... Matt. As in, crude teenage boy.

Also, sounds remarkably unsanitary for the hypochondriac, lol. But this is very in line for Matt to say - it's shocking, and unexpected, which is also what his final action in Mal di Luna is. He's saying this just for the hell of it, maybe to get a reaction out of CB (who doesn't oblige him)

And now... the actual portrayal of the afterlife!

Life After Death as shown in the play

Crazily enough, we get an actual answer to the question CB's been asking this whole show. What happens after you die? Well, Beethoven was the closest: in DSG's heaven, all of God's creatures (God being Charles Schulz) live together.

It's portrayed as a street that Charles Schulz (who had also passed away by the time this play was written) lives on, along with Beethoven, the dog, the bird, and... the unnamed school shooting victim girl. *Scratches head* alright so it's not ONLY Schulz's creations, but we'll say 3 for 4.

Final Note

The only character who never discusses religion or what they think the afterlife is like - aside from CB who is the one asking people about it - is Van's sister (excepting "the devil made me do it!" which she says as a joke). And she's also the person most accepting of CB for who he is, in my opinion. So that's something.

The VR Performance Stainless Steel Exhaust System is a simple bolt-on package that offers a stylish alternative to enhance the Volkswagen’s appearance. It bolts directly onto your car’s factory hangers and fits to the stock catalytic converter. As you can see in the photos below, this system was designed to replace the factory exhaust from the stock downpipe back. The lighter muffler delete exhaust now weighs only 30 pounds, which saves 14 pounds over the stock 44-pound exhaust. The exhaust system features 2.5-inch to 3-inch 304 stainless steel piping with 2 resonator mufflers that Y to a muffler delete rear section to bring out the perfect sound of the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The dual exhaust ends with 4-inch sleek matte black tips for a sporty rear appearance that means business.
