Bumped into reliable Dulaang UP administrative staff members Jesus (Jess) Lopez & Archie Clataro. UP has been fortunate to have dedicated and reliable administrative staff members like Kuya Jess (since 1979) and Archie (since 2009), who have served at the College of Arts and Letters for many years. Not surprisingly, Archie was named recipient of UP Diliman's Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Kawani two years ago. Kuya Jess, on the other hand, has worked in theatrical productions involving National Artists Salvador Bernal, Wilfrido Maria Guerrero, Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio, Bienvenido Lumbera, Antonio Mabesa and Rolando Tinio. They have played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of their office, handling various administrative tasks with efficiency and professionalism. Their years of experience and commitment have been invaluable in supporting faculty members, staff members, students, alumni, and visitors. Their hard work and dedication have been instrumental in maintaining high standards of excellence and reputation within the university community. We are grateful for Kuya Jess and Archie's continued service and look forward to many more years of collaboration.

Review: Dulaang UP's The Forsaken House

Early 1940s. The Philippines is starting to gain more independence and power. It is opening its doors to new ideas. Its culture and tradition are diversifying.
But not in Don Ramon’s household. While many Filipino families of the time embrace change, Don Ramon maintains a severe hold on his family, especially his children. He forbids them from going out with friends, yet does not welcome the idea of entertaining visitors at home. He distrusts their peers and dictates what they can and cannot do in life.
Though having only his children’s best interests at heart, his unyielding will to wield control over their lives spur a series of events that leads him and his family spiraling towards an ominous fate, in unexpected and heartbreaking ways.
-
This house. This empty house. This Forsaken House.
The Forsaken House is the first offering of Dulaang UP for their 36th season. The show is quite a tearjerker as it depicts a typical Filipino family in the post-war era where the father assumes total control of family affairs, and shows how the children respond to the repressing circumstances.

(Irma Adlawan as Doña Encarna; photo by Frances Makil Ignacio)

(Leo Rialp as Don Ramon; photo by Frances Makil Ignacio)
The powerhouse casting is just pure genius! Veteran actress Irma Adlawan grasps the role of Doña Encarna like a breeze. You'll really get attached to her and know where she's coming from (alternate Tess Dumpit). Opposite her, Joel Lamangan and Leo Rialp share the role of Don Ramon. If only these two actors would fuse together, then you have nothing to ask for. A strict, narrow-minded but a warm-hearted Don Ramon will be brought to life, with decisions being done only for the good of his children.

(Ces Quesada as Tia Pelagia, Tess Dumpit as Doña Encarna and Joel Lamangan as Don Ramon; photo by Frances Makil Ignacio)
Ces Quesada as the bubbly and loud Tia Pilagia (alternate Frances Makil Ignacio) gives a scoop of intensity and a bit of laughter to the subtle and mellow environment of the show.

(Menggie Cobarrubias as Tio Carlos; photo by Frances Makil Ignacio)
The ever-concerned Tio Carlos, played by Menggie Cobarrubias (alternate Greg de Leon) leaves the audience with a thought that there is even a deeper story behind the mere show.

(The Dulaang UP Ensemble; photo by Frances Makil Ignacio)
The talent that the Dulaang UP ensemble portrayed only shows that a lot of actors/actresses of this generation are to look forward to. Definitely we will be seeing them in the future productions of DUP and other leading professional theater companies in the country. Though some of them (who played as the children) needs to do a little bit of homework to be the best actor/actress they want to be.
Directed by Tony Mabesa, The Forsaken House is definitely a show that is not to be missed. It takes you back in time, creates a warm and contrived ambiance, with magnificent set and lights. Also, the music accompaniment adds more jolt as your tears hang by your eyelids. So better prepare a roll of tissue or two before entering the theater.
"The Forsaken House" runs February 15-March 4, 2012, at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, UP Diliman. For inquiries, contact Cherry Bong Edralin 0917-7500107 or the DUP Office 9261349.

Get a BRAVO-BRAVA on that AUDITION!
I have been doing theatre ever since I could remember but however long enough I have been in the field, I believe that there is NOTHING more frustrating than the auditions that you have to go through before you could be part of a production. Imagine, a panel of people judging you either nonchalantly or snootily as you show them what you’ve got (backstage staff included!!) It can all be so nerve-wracking. What if what you have is not what they want? What if they’re all better than you? What if you choke on your words as you read your lines in front of the panel?
You have to deal with a lot of pressure, over-thinking, cold, sweaty palms, and worse, rejection. Believe me, I know the feeling. I have heard the word “NEXT” a lot of times way, WAY too early. Like you, I am still learning and I would like to share with you a couple of tips that could help you prep for that audition.
BUT FIRST..
CAUTION!!
Before you start, you have to know what you are entering in. NEVER take it personally if you do not get the part that you are rooting for, most especially if you are still just beginning. Before you decide to do this, secure yourself first with the knowledge that whatever happens, you will do your best. By the end of the day, whether you got in or not, you have nothing to lose if you gave it your all. You did your best and that is already something to be proud of and it will always be enough. Remember, their judgement does NOT define you as an actor.
Are you ready?
1.) AUDITION ETIQUETTE 101
Before you choose your monologue, song, or even make your eight 8s of dance moves, it is important to be able to match it with the requirements of the audition. You have to know the genre of the play first. You wouldn’t want to burst out into a musical song for a straight play, right? It would look like you do not know what you are getting yourself into.
ALWAYS match your audition pieces with the type of play you are doing. Research about the play especially if it is going to be adapted. Also, most of the time, the panel would ask you about how much you know about the play or even the role you want. You have to be prepared for these questions when the time comes.
2.) CHOOSE THE RIGHT AUDITION PIECE
There was this one time when I sang My Lord and Master from The King and I at an audition. I did not sing that bad but I remember feeling unsatisfied after the audition after I was not able to reach its highest note!- And to think, I was auditioning for one of my favorite directors! I just wish I could have practiced more and honestly, just chosen a completely different song instead. Now the song is forever tainted with that memory.
Choose the appropriate audition piece. I guess we can say that I have learned from my mistake, so do not do the same. Do not choose that high note birit if you know in yourself that you are not capable of doing it. Remember, you are there to show them the best of what you have got, not what you are uncertain of. BUT, if you have a lot of time and you think that it is still 100% possible to attain that high C, by all means, go for it.
3.) MEEEEMO-RIZE! ALL ALONE IN THE MOONLIGHT~♫♪♩
Once you have found the appropriate pieces for your audition, memorize, practice and UNDERSTAND IT- all by heart. Never, ever go a day without running through your lines or songs. I cannot emphasize it enough. You have to know it even when you are sleeping. And no, it doesn’t matter if you look crazy talking to yourself in the hallway or if you’re too noisy in the shower after PE.
4.) COLD FEET? THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
During the day of the audition, you will most likely lose a lot of what you have practiced once you see the sight of the other auditionees pacing about the venue, singing or reciting their lines. This is true! I have never been to an audition without people trying to condescend you.
They will most likely intimidate you. But please, do not let them distract you even if their diction sounds a lot better than yours. Whatever they have, DO NOT COMPARE! The day of the audition should never be the day where you expose your insecurities.
Instead, just focus. Prep yourself and keep your zen. Everything should remain positive and calm.
5.) STRUT YOUR STUFF!
Confidence is the key.
Enter the room with your head held high and your back straightened. Hold your stance, stop shifting weight from one leg to the other, and avoid fidgeting with your hands. Once you are there, you should feel a bright light reverberating around your body. That is positive energy. Be generous with this. Perform what you have practiced (as much as possible, no sudden inspirations!) and give it your all.
I tell you, if you keep a positive mind and really work hard for it, regardless of the results, you will feel a huge rush of joy after your exposure.
Every audition is different and it would take a lot of practice to get used to them. That is why I encourage you to keep on auditioning until you truly get the hang of it. Truly, the theatre is a field of fun learning experience and so.. KEEP ON AUDITIONING!
Sooner or later, who knows, we could even share the stage soon. Break a leg! :)

RATED SDC: Dulaang UP's The Seagull/Ang Tagak

As the second offering for it's 37th season, Dulaang UP brings us one of the world's most loved classic in theater that presents a compelling discourse art, love and life. Written by the master dramatist Anton Chekhov, The Seagull (Ang Tagak) is a comedy in four acts and through the years, it has been translated to English several times. This is the first time a Philippine production is staging the multi-awarded translation which uses modern language and a Filipino translation for the present-day theater audience.
Rating:

Production Details:
Theater Company: Dulaang UP
Director: Tony Mabesa
Writer: Anton Chekhov
Translation: Tom Stoppard (English); Rolando Tinio (Filipino)
Cast: Ana Abad Santos, Frances Makil-Ignacio, Ces Quesada, Leo Rialp, Menggie Cobarrubias, Jeremy Domingo, Alfonso Deza, Stella Cañete Balucas, Carlo Tarobal, Zafrullah Masahud, Karen Gaerlan, and Nadine Samonte.

Did you know: Stoppard’s adaptation premiered in New York in 2001 and featured a star-studded cast which included Meryl Streep as Irina, Kevin Kline as Trigorin, and Natalie Portman as Nina and was under the direction of Mike Nichols. The same English adaptation that Dulaang UP is using in this production.
Plot: Set in Russia at the end of the 19th century, The Seagull dramatizes romatic and artistic conflicts between four characters: the ingenue Nina, the fading actress Irina Arkadina, her son the symbolist playwright Konstantin Gavrilovich, and the famous middlebrow story writer Trigorin.
Best Character: Irina Arkadina

Best Scene: Towards the end of Act Four, Konstantin Gavrilovich (Kostya) bursts into anger as his issues with his career as a writer, his relationship with his mother Irina Arkadina and his undying love for Nina go to waste, leaves him distraught and pushes him on the verge of giving up. He tears all his manuscripts, throws it up in the air and storms out. Soon, a gunshot is heard in the next room.
Best Quote: "I'm so tired, Kostya! If I could only rest... rest. I am the seagull... No, that's not it. I'm an actress!" / "Pagod na ako, Kostya! Kung maaari lamang akong magpahinga. Isa akong tagak. Hindi. Isa akong artista!"

Best Actor: Theater luminary Frances Makil-Ignacio who plays Irina Arkadina. She handles the role so flawless that even if Arkadina becomes your worst hated bitch, you will still fall in love with her fabulous and stunning portrayal of the role. Pretty sure, her alternate on the English version Ana Abad Santos is just as strong and excellent.
Set/Costume: The whole show is a time machine.
Props: Must. Love. The. Swings.

What didn't work: This is the theatrical debut of TV Sensation and former Starstruck-alumnae Nadine Samonte who plays the actress Nina. She's okay. Her acting is commendable especially on those scenes wherein she should really put a lot of emotional input but fails to do so. You still see Nadine, not Nina. But that doesn't mean she brought the whole house down. There's always room for improvement. If she would continue doing theater and train herself, Nadine would be one of those young jewels of the industry to watch out for.
Why you should watch it: It's not often that a classic is staged in Manila. And it's Chekhov! The powerhouse casting pretty much says it all.

Ticket Prices/Details: The Seagull (Ang Tagak) runs September 19 - October 7, 2012 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman. For sponsorship and ticket inquiries, please contact the Dulaang UP Office at 926-1349, 981-8500 local 2449 or 433-7840 and look for Ms. Camille Guevarra or Ms. Samanta Clarin.
