Graffiti as Protest: The Power of Street Art in Activism
MDA20009 DIGITAL COMMUNITIES
It’s been a while, but I’m back here! Today, we’re diving into social activism, protest, and citizenship specifically through the lens of street art and activism, with a focus on Banksy and his impact.
How Street Art Became a Voice for Change
Street art has evolved from being dismissed as “just graffiti” to a powerful tool of resistance, embodying both continuity and change in social activism. Its dynamic and aesthetic qualities play a crucial role in shaping the future of communities (Awad et al., 2017). Banksy, in particular, has turned street art into a megaphone for everything from anti-capitalism to anti-war messages. His work isn’t just eye-catching, it’s thought-provoking and accessible, reaching people who might not pay attention to protests or politics otherwise.
Banksy’s work often uses humor and irony, giving it a unique power to resonate. This British irony serves as a critical and imaginative tool, encouraging people to reflect on the possibilities and limitations of global justice (Brassett, 2009). He’s famous for using stencils to create images that pop up overnight, grabbing attention in public spaces. Take his iconic “Girl with a Balloon.” It’s simple but resonates with themes of hope and loss, things we all get. His style isn’t about fancy details but it’s straightforward and instantly recognizable. Banksy’s art can make you laugh and think at the same time something not many traditional art forms manage to do.

Girl with Balloon by Banksy
According to (MyArtBroker, 2023) The iconic Girl With Balloon, also known as Balloon Girl, first appeared in London in 2002. It was initially stenciled on the walls beneath Waterloo Bridge at London.
Can Art Speak the Truth?
Why does Banksy’s street art work as a symbol of protest? It’s because it taps into public frustration and becomes a rallying point for broader social movements. In 2019, Banksy’s Season’s Greetings appeared on a garage wall in Wales, showing a boy turning away from a snowy scene to focus on a dumpster on fire. Similar to his earlier work, Slave Labour, it turned public spaces into arenas for protest and social commentary (Hansen & Danny, 2015). This mural perfectly captured the mood of public frustration at a time when people felt overwhelmed by political instability and environmental issues.

Banksy’s Season’s Greetings
What makes Banksy’s art so powerful is how it taps into people’s emotions. He uses dark humor to shine a light on uncomfortable truths. By putting these tough subjects out in public spaces, his work grabs attention and sparks conversation. It becomes a protest in itself, encouraging people to confront social issues directly.
Street Art as a Tool for Activism
One of the coolest things about street art is how accessible it is. Unlike gallery art, street art is accessible to everyone, turning everyday streets into open-air exhibits. Flickr users, for instance, often tag and categorize street art, showing how they interpret and value this unique art form (Philipps et al., 2017). Banksy’s work turns walls and buildings into platforms for political messages, breaking down that invisible wall between “serious” art and everyday life. You don’t need a ticket or a fancy gallery, his art is just out there, making you think about things you wouldn’t normally stop to question.

Banksy Street Art Collection
When you stumble across a Banksy piece, it interrupts the daily grind, almost forcing you to think about whatever message he’s trying to get across. It’s activism in one of its purest forms, sneaking past the media filters and going straight to the public. This is why street art powerfully blends activism with public space, shaping political awareness through its presence and the conversations it sparks, as seen in depictions of Egyptian uprising activists (Blaagaard & Mollerup, 2020).
Banksy, Redefining Art as Activism
Banksy’s street art has completely redefined what it means to protest. Take Rage, the Flower Thrower, for example. Instead of a Molotov cocktail, a protester throws a bouquet of flowers, sending a clear message about peaceful resistance. Then there’s Kissing Coppers, where two policemen share a kiss, challenging everything we think we know about authority and masculinity. These pieces aren’t just cool to look at. They push us to think about big issues and spark important conversations. And thanks to social media, Banksy’s art doesn’t just stay on the streets. It spreads like wildfire, turning his pieces into global symbols of activism.

But Banksy’s legacy goes way beyond the walls he paints. He’s transformed street art from being labeled “vandalism” to a powerful form of social commentary that speaks to everyone. In a world that’s growing skeptical of politics and the media, his art offers something fresh, raw, unfiltered, and totally relatable. Through his humor and genius use of public spaces, Banksy has shown that art can be just as impactful as any protest march. It’s a reminder that activism doesn’t always have to be loud or in-your-face. Sometimes, it’s just a piece of art on a wall that makes you stop, think, and take action.

If you were a street artist, what kind of bold message would you slap on a wall?

Brick Club 1.5.11 “Christus Nos Liberavit”
The Latin of the title translates to “Christ Liberates.” Most of this book talks about god in a much more abstract sense, and god in general is invoked more than Christ is, at least in narration rather than dialogue terms. I’m not sure what to make of the fact that Christ is being invoked when Hugo is criticizing the fact that society ignores the true tenets of its largest religion.
“The holy law of Jesus Christ governs our civilization, but it does not yet permeate it.” Christianity is supposed to be the main religion but those with the power to act as “good christians” interpret the phrase how they like, in ways that do not line up with the actions of good will and mutual aid and empathy that are actually in the bible. This is another one of those ‘Why’s Hugo gotta be so relevant in the 21st century’ type lines. Even now I live in a country that’s supposed to have separation of church and state but it really doesn’t, and the christianity that the state follows is christianity appropriated and twisted by those in power, by politicians and capitalists and bigots. The people who claim christianity now are the people Jesus would have chased out of the temple. The fights with cops over the right of Black people or homeless people or trans people to live, the lack of welfare for all the people suffering from unemployment due to the pandemic, the utter disregard of large churches to be safe in said pandemic, hell, all the people who refuse to mask up and quarantine, the fact that gatherings for two Eids and Rosh Hashanah were cancelled due to pandemic but the US won’t be shutting things down for Christmas and didn’t make an effort to prevent Thanksgiving gatherings either, the consistent abuse and torture of immigrants deemed “illegal” and placed in camps, the abandonment of people who are ill or disabled without health insurance or adequate care. It all just feels like it can be summed up with this line. We say we’re a christian country, that we are religious, but the laws of Jesus Christ that should govern our civilization aren’t the ones that have permeated it. People have appropriated the words of christianity for their own use and abandoned those that are truly important. It was relevant in 1823, and in 1862 when Les Mis was published, and it’s still highly relevant in the dumpster fire of 2020.
Hugo is so pissed off in this chapter. There’s just so much anger and just a sense of, like, “it’s all so awfully overwhelming, and nobody’s doing anything to change it, because they don’t see what needs changing.” That’s the problem here. People are turning a blind eye on problems because they think that because some other major problem (slavery) has been solved, that means there’s no other major problems.
“They say slavery has disappeared from European civilization. That is incorrect. It still exists, but now it weighs only on women, and it is called prostitution.” France abolished slavery in 1848, and I think Hugo is talking like France is all of Europe, because I’m pretty sure a number of European nations didn’t abolish slavery until at least a dozen or so years later?
“It weighs on women, that is to say, on grace, frailty, beauty, motherhood.” Hugo is listing off all these aspects that Fantine no longer has access to. She no longer has virtue, at least in the eyes of society, now that she has become a sex worker. She no longer has frailty, because she has hardened and become marble. She no longer has beauty, because she has lost her hair and her teeth and her nice clothes. She no longer has motherhood, because she has lost Cosette. This slavery weighs on women until they have none of these characteristics left to them.
First switch to present tense! Well, first switch to present tense while talking about a main character, and talking in a non-abstract sense. Present tense when talking about actual plot action (as opposed to poetic or historical ramblings) is Hugo telling us to pay attention! Aside from Waterloo (which is in the historical present tense), there are only a handful of times that he switches to present tense. Present tense is Hugo telling us to wake up and pay attention because what he’s talking about is important for the upcoming chapters. And often he only hangs on to Important Present Tense for about a paragraph. Here, it’s 13 lines.
In this case, the present tense details just how horribly traumatic the situation has been for Fantine. She has basically shut down, become almost a shell of a person, become resigned to her fate. Nothing can touch her; she ignores and endures all. This emphasis on how indifferent she has become is important, because that endurance breaks down in the next chapter with Bamatabois’ treatment of her.
“All that can happen to her has happened. She has endured all, borne all, experienced all, suffered all, lost all, wept for all.” Fantine really and truly becomes a Universal Symbol here. She is All Women here, and is experiencing the pain and suffering and burden of every poor woman.
“She is resigned, with that resignation resembling indifference as death resembles sleep. She fears nothing now. Every cloud falls on her, and the whole ocean sweeps over her! What does it matter to her? The sponge is already saturated.” This feels like a parallel to 1.2.8. Again, society is an ocean. Again, it overwhelms, drenches, drags down. In 1.2.8, we get a poetic, abstract image of the way the poor struggle to keep their heads above water, to survive the crushing weight of society and poverty, and in the end we watch them give up the struggle, exhausted, and sink. The last thirteen or so chapters have chronicled Fantine’s struggle, her fight against each crashing wave, her determination. She’s still swimming here, but she’s beginning to go numb and cold, her hands are starting to grasp at nothing the way the cast off man in 1.2.8 did, she’s starting to become worn out, and the inexorable night of poverty, the measureless misery of societal abandonment, is starting to take its toll.

#2yrsago All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault: supers and the undead battle for the world's soul

It's been more than a decade since Canadian science fiction writer James Alan Gardner last published a novel; I've been reading and enjoying Gardner's work since I was a teenager, and my vote was one of those that counted towards his Aurora Award for the magnificent story "Muffin Explains Teleology to the World at Large." Now, after far too long, Gardner has come roaring back with a novel that mashes up hard sf, superheroes, and urban fantasy in a comedic combination that defies description (though I'm going to try to describe it): All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault.
In 1982, quite without warning, the world discovered that the undead were real, and that being one of them was actually pretty great: immortality, super-strength, psychic powers, and the ability to reduce those around you to quivering, obedient Renfields are all good reasons to want to join the Dark. Which is why The Dark becomes a status marker for the richest of the rich -- who become not just wealthy, but immortal and supernatural.
But the Dark isn't alone in our world: they're held in check by Sparks, superheroes who arrive nearly simultaneously with the Darklings, capable of amazing feats grounded in science (or, at least, plausible pseudoscience), possessing powers to rival the Darklings' own. But it's not as simple as Dark vs Light: some Sparks work for the establishment and law and order; so do some Darklings (after all, they are the establishment). And some Sparks are driven mad by their powers and work towards the destruction of the world -- or reality itself -- and some Darklings are on the side of chaos, contemptuous of the agreements that hold them back from seizing absolute control over the world.
Enter Gardner's narrator, Kim is a nonbinary engineering student at the University of Waterloo who had her heart broken by the scion of a Darkling family whose romantic entanglements were ended the day he became undead. Kim and her housemates are helping a friend rescue some discarded lab equipment from a dumpster on the eve of a full lunar eclipse when they happen on a sinister group of Darklings entering a mysterious lab. After a terrifying explosion, they find themselves transformed into some rather super Sparks, and, in a series of fast-moving and darkly hilarious sequences, they find themselves sewing super costumes, thinking up secret aliases, and generally becoming the defenders of Waterloo from an unholy alliance of rogue Darklings and evil mad science.
Gardner mixes serious physics speculation with snappy dialog, madcap action and real suspense to spin a tale that has all the explosions you could ask for (hence the title) and more than its share of suspense and laughs. A book worth waiting a decade for, indeed.

music meme: hybridpanda
saved the best of the single character playlists until last! panda’s is the only in-character playlist made so far, clocking in at awhopping forty-six songs as of writing! it’s composed of purely old bops. here’s five anyway:
1) slice of heaven by dave dobbyn
anyone else read the footrot flats as a kid? it was a comic about a the innermost thoughts of a dog working on a farm. it’s a very strayan comic. there was a cartoon produced and i heard this song. it also seems one of those more old fashioned pandoran hits blaring out of the beaten radio in a garage somewhere.
2) owner of a lonely heart by yes
gym’s an important routine for panda and saberial, and the two never miss leg day if they can help it; never missing a day if they could help it was drilled into them by their formidable mother. saberial likes to show off her guns while panda hides theirs underneath layers.
3) september by earth, wind and fire
panda has a habit of listening to their music when going on ‘super easy’ jobs...the definition of which would probably make hatfilms lie down and briefly consider not becoming conmen.
4) never gonna give you up by rick astley
panda plays this song so frequently to teep over the mic that teep can recognise it just from the first three seconds. teep immediately mutes panda for the length of the song: exactly two minutes and thirty eight seconds. panda likes to sing along in spite of being tone deaf. this song also doubles as ironic considering both their character arcs are heavily linked.
5) waterloo by abba
this is the song playing in the diner that trell was unfortunately in when panda’s mark decided to start something with panda. and trell got panda’s order by mistake after living through it. panda also lost their cybernetic eye in the dumpster as a result but handing in the bounty and health insurance covered the cost of a replacement.
bonus
you’re my heart, you’re my soul by modern talking
this song has a special place in teep’s heart for being the only song that panda sings to try to worm their way back into teep’s good graces after a troll session. teep usually relents and lets panda back into the group after. saberial thinks that it’s especially funny to see their in-game avatars stare at each other in a silent showdown of wills.

Consider climate impact on infrastructure suffering repeated flooding: experts
With key infrastructure in the Maritimes and Quebec again threatened by surging waterways, flooding experts say it's past time for fixes that consider worst-case climate change scenarios.
The New Brunswick government announced Wednesday night the closure of portions of the Trans-Canada Highway between Fredericton and Moncton -- for the second year in a row -- forcing detours for car traffic and thousands of trucks that use the trade corridor each day.
And on Thursday afternoon, Quebec officials issued an alert that a hydro dam on the Rouge River was at risk of failure, endangering about 250 people downstream. They ordered an immediate evacuation.
Surging rivers in the province have already been blamed for one death, damage to factories and homes and the closures of many secondary routes.
Slobodan Simonovic, director of engineering studies at the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, says engineers and the scientific community need to move more swiftly to design infrastructure that accounts for climate change science.
"Go with the conservative prediction of the future. Go with something that is predicting high potential impact," said the civil engineer, who teaches at Western University in Ontario.
The federal climate change report released two weeks ago predicts extreme rainfall events, lasting over several days are expected to increase.
The report also notes that if current global carbon emissions continue, Atlantic Canada will experience a 12 per cent increase in annual precipitation over the next century, and a 30 per cent increase in one-in-10 year storms that produce large downpours of rain.
Blair Feltmate, head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo, says efforts are underway at the National Research Council, the Standards Council of Canada, the Canadian Standards Association and his centre to develop fresh standards for infrastructure to adapt to climate change.
Solutions for roads already in place may include building protective berms, diversion channels to take storm waters from highways and holding ponds to keep water in safe locations, he said.
There may also be methods to place natural features near roads to absorb water before it spills onto the pavement, and management systems can be put into place to clear debris in culverts and prevent damming.
"We know what to do to take risk out of the system. The problem is complacency. We're simply not moving fast enough on these files," Feltmate said in an interview. "I think the light is starting to dawn. If we ignore it we do so at our own peril."
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made similar points on Wednesday, while visiting an evacuation centre in the city of Gatineau, Que., near where the Ottawa River jumped its banks.
"It means we have to think about adaptation, mitigation and how we are going to move forward together," he said.
Quebec is struggling with infrastructure problems of its own, as residents of several small islands in the Montreal area have been cut off from the world after officials were forced to close the only bridges linking them to the mainland.
Officials in Laval scrambled to set up dumpsters and emergency services for the 1,000 residents of the Iles-Laval on Thursday after the rising waters forced officials to close a bridge to vehicle traffic.
Across the province more than 2,500 homes were flooded and 2,184 were isolated -- their road or bridge access cut off by water. Some 919 people had been forced to evacuate.
One death has been blamed on the high water thus far, after 72-year-old Louise Seguin Lortie died last Saturday after driving her car into a sinkhole caused by flooding in the Pontiac area, about 30 kilometres northwest of Ottawa.
Kevin Manaugh, a geography professor and member of McGill University's School of Urban Planning, said it's not easy to protect transportation infrastructure in Quebec, where frigid winters, high precipitation and the freeze/thaw cycle form a "unique set of circumstances that makes it harder to plan for things that will last for decades and centuries."
He said that in urban areas especially, planners can turn to technical solutions such as using more permeable paving materials, planting trees and creating large water retention basins to help soak up the water near developed areas.
"The more we build green space and rainwater retention, these are solutions that exist to make sure the land can take more heavy rainfall," he said.
Civil engineer Guy Felio, senior adviser of asset management solutions at Stantec, said the key going forward is to build resilience in the roadways -- allowing them to adapt if rainfall predictions increase even further.
He says designers are now starting to consider the various climate change projections in their work to make highways more resilient.
That doesn't necessarily mean building roads higher and with harder materials -- at much higher costs, he said.
Rather, it may involve purchasing land alongside the highways to allow for holding ponds and other features to be added.
Paul Bradley, a spokesman for New Brunswick's Department of Transportation, said the flooding of the Trans-Canada Highway is the third such event since 2008 that has caused widespread damage.
"It's obvious our circumstances are changing and we need to change as well," he wrote in an email.
"Discussions about how we can reduce the impact of flooding on provincial infrastructure have already taken place."
Al Giberson, the general manager of the MRDC Operations Corp., the operator of the highway, said in a telephone interview that the road's condition will be assessed after the flood recedes.
"In the future, the assessments will have to include what the potential is for events like this ... and solutions will have to be developed for that. How long that takes, I can't answer right now," he said.

Was friends with the girl who played luna lovegood, she had just met this guy who, as children, was at same surfing camp or smthn as babies in the caribbean? Both were named after it i guess, all her fans telling her to give him a chance and date him. Then i was in weird, rendered world that had portals. Like ocilus rift game. Portals went to elemental worlds kinda like spyro, water n forest n stuff. Each one had sprites or faerie girls, i tried to seduce one. Also smthn with brian n jose n my parents, we were in some decrepit house and there were creepy tunnels in the ceiling?
Smthn in the Empire of sand universe, very upsetting. Then was in sandman universe and he was tryna kill amun and the mystics. Then smthn bout sarah and being in a big cafeteria of people, and then an auditorium. Like high school
Was eating dinner with whole entire family, errbody went out to smoke n invited matthew out too even tho he doesnt smoke, but didnt invite me. Started crying. Then i was packing to move, mom tryna help me. Then i was Void from incredibles 2, running away from someone. Run into hugh jackman, we go have sex in his dingy apartment, he ties me up, its gr8. Nosy neighbors open door, i tell em im busy go away. Then after, i have a crisis because im myself again and dating alex, freak out that i cheated on him with hugh jackman. Then in a mystery where dad and his old friend group caused an old shopkeeper to be electrocuted long ago when they were teens. Then i was a suspect, blonde college girl in house with other suspects
Was harnessing up to pull ivy on these huge redwoods, then we were in thailand or somewhere? Dude driving us around, i was embarassed i didnt remember what country or town we were even in. We stopped at a store, i wanted to buy cutesy things to fit in. Found nail polish that turns rainbow colors
Sleeping on wildwood rd, hiker girl also behind dumpster. Dude tryna steal car, alarm goes off, call cops. He chases us, then its me and kat running from alex. We hide in rando apt of guy we knew. Then in owens house w lots of ppl and a bunch of cows broke into yard and one came in the house. Also dogs there, had to make them like me, really scared. Then i was balding, had gross peely itchy scalp, tryna moisturize it and peel the dead skin off
Snuck onto tims computer and saw a bunch of dirty emails to somebody. Then i was in It Follows. Lived with 2 abusive roommates, escaped and handcuffed myself to hotel bed. Then escaped that and drove 2 waterloo house, but knew It would come for me. Came looking like kenzie but walking in the field, ran out to car and drove away n woke up
Was roommates with tathariel, she was watchin a movie and i wanted to watch with her but she was really standoffish. Sooooo unbelievably pretty tho
Went to movie at house party where ppl were smoking crack, claudia IP was there. Wanted to go back to flirt with her or sleep at her place, it was in sequim/cf. Try to drive there with my family in the car behind me, on wildwood, but i get pulled over by flirty annoying young cop who only pulled me over to talk. He starts mansplaining traffic rules and shit.
Snuck into owens backyard, it was super steep hill with 2 streams. They came back from church and caught me, hung out w his kids like a babysitter but i felt ashamed of trespassing
Was reading an alice in wonderland book then it became real, on top of mountain, needed a tame lion to light a fire otherwise this curse would cause the mountain to catch fire and a bunch of young kid characters had already been killed off from that? So i got this lion and was trying to untame it by acting crazy, it was very scary
In big house with lauren and family, going to work pulling scotch broom in sequim but left lunch stuff at alex's, tryna text him but phones at 1% and wont charge. Then had to time travel to get morgan freeman n convince him to trust me, he was at some family reconciliation where everyone was crying
Cool oufits i was taking 4 free? Crop tops that look like sailor scout uniforms, with cool red high waist shorts and suspenders
Xander, lucas, luis, n folks were sposed to go with jenna to france to get her ears pierced for the wedding, everyone bailed last minute so i go to airport to tell them off, me and ashlyn couldnt go. Accidentally walked across canada border w/o passport and they wouldn't let me back, crying a lot
In alien spaceship with thanos and orc-lookin fuckers, could get to light speed real quick, super fun

he definitely practices his opening arguments / closing remarks and other such debates out loud while prowling around the city.
works out arguments with people, playing both sides. sometimes he wins, other times he loses because foggy makes some really good points.
as someone who has hearing such as his, gets those ear worm songs stuck in his head so easy. needs to avoid the karaoke bar near campus on friday nights because it’s ABBA night, and if he gets waterloo stuck in his head one more time, he might go crazy.
although sometimes he appreciates when he can hear what people are listening to and it syncs nicely with what he’s doing. ie. that time someone was watching mission impossible while he happened to be scaling part of a high rise.
times he just is like “ow, ow, ow, ow, ow,” walking home because of injuries and saying ow makes it hurt less. don’t fight him on this it works.
knowing that charlie makes sounds while fighting, i’m sure matt does to. but also other people do too. if civilians listen too closely to these fights they’d probably be like tf?
little pep talks to make those big jumps. “you got this, you know this city like the back of your hand. leap down, grab the ledge, leap to the flag pole, flip to the street lamp, hit the awning, top of the dumpster.” and then doesn’t do any of that and ends up in the ground and not sure how he’s in one piece but he is, so just runs with it.
mimicking the police chatter sarcastically. “oh /daredevil/ is in the ArEA. whatever will we do??? our jobs maybe?? … bastards.”
do you think matt makes any noises as he's flipping around hell's kitchen? like, "oh! ah!" as he jumps or flips or maybe he has little thoughts like he goes, "if i don't make it to that building in the next 30 seconds im gonna have bad luck for the next week." or, "i wonder if i can make that jump, i couldn't do it a few years ago."
