New research shows how comets could be the source of life on planets outside our solar system Scientists theorize that comets may have spread the organic ingredients necessary for the emergence of life on Earth. New research suggests that comets may also deliver these elements to exoplanets. During the formation of the solar system, the Earth was bombarded by asteroids, comets and other space objects. How the planet obtained the water and molecules necessary for life is still controversial, but comets are considered the most likely sources of these substances. [caption id="attachment_83089" align="aligncenter" width="650"] planet[/caption] But if comets could potentially bring the seeds of life to Earth, could they serve a similar function for exoplanets in other parts of the universe? To explore this question, a team of researchers from the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge developed mathematical models that helped reveal how comets could transfer similar vital elements to other planets in our galaxy. While the study's findings do not yet provide a definitive answer about the presence of life on other planets, they may help narrow the search for exoplanets that may support life. “wandering” from planet to planet, spread life throughout the Universe? “We continue to learn more about the atmospheres of exoplanets, so our goal was to find out whether there were planets where complex organic molecules could also be delivered by comets. It's possible that the molecules that enabled life on Earth were brought in by comets, and the same may be true for planets in other galaxies,” said Richard Enslow, one of the study's authors, who works at the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. Over the past decades, scientists have learned more about the prebiotic molecules found in comets. For example, NASA's Stardust mission discovered samples of glycine, an amino acid and building block of proteins, in Comet Wild 2 (81P/Wild), and the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission discovered organic molecules in the coma of Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P). However, these organic molecules can be destroyed by strong comet impacts on the planet. So Enslow and his colleagues had to find scenarios in which a comet-planet collision occurs slowly enough to preserve the ingredients of life intact. The study, based on simulations, found that the slowest impact velocities occur in solar systems where planets are densely packed. Comets moving through such systems are slowed down by the gravitational influence of the planets. The simulations also showed that conditions for the emergence of life may be suitable on rocky planets orbiting red dwarfs. They are the most common type of star in the galaxy and are of interest to astronomers searching for exoplanets. However, planets in such systems are subject to more frequent high-speed collisions with comets and the likelihood of life appearing there is low, especially if the planets are located at significant distances from each other. “We can identify the types of systems that could be the subject of research to test different models for the origin of life. And this is another way to look at the amazing diversity of life on Earth and look for its analogues on other planets,” Anslow commented.

Salt Water Remnants on Ceres Video Credit: Dawn Mission, NASA, JPL-Caltech, UCLA, MPS/DLR/IDA

Explanation: Does Ceres have underground pockets of water? Ceres, the largest asteroid in the asteroid belt, was thought to be composed of rock and ice. At the same time, Ceres was known to have unusual bright spots on its surface. These bright spots were clearly imaged during Dawn's exciting approach in 2015. Analyses of Dawn images and spectra indicated that the bright spots arise from the residue of highly-reflective salt water that used to exist on Ceres' surface but evaporated. Recent analysis indicates that some of this water may have originated from deep inside Ceres, indicating Ceres to be a kindred spirit with several Solar System moons, also thought to harbor deep water pockets. The featured video shows in false-color pink the bright evaporated brine named Cerealia Facula in Occator Crater. In 2018, the mission-successful but fuel-depleted Dawn spacecraft was placed in a distant parking orbit, keeping it away from the Ceres' surface for at least 20 years to avoid interfering with any life that might there exist.

Bright Spots On Ceres

Bright surface features on the dwarf planet Ceres known as faculae were first discovered by NASA's Dawn spacecraft in 2015. This mosaic of one such feature, Cerealia Facula, combines images obtained from altitudes as low as 22 miles (35 km) above Ceres' surface. The mosaic is overlain on a topography model based on images obtained during Dawn's low altitude mapping orbit (240 miles or 385 km altitude). No vertical exaggeration was applied. The center of Cerealia Facula is located at 19.7 degrees north latitude and 239.6 degrees south longitude.

During its mission of over a decade, the Dawn spacecraft has studied the asteroid Vesta and dwarf planet Ceres, celestial bodies believed to have formed early in the history of the solar system. The mission's goal is to characterize the early solar system and the processes that dominated its formation.

Explanation: What created this unusual mountain? There is a new theory. Ahuna Mons is the largest mountain on the largest known asteroid in our Solar System, Ceres, which orbits our Sun in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Ahuna Mons, though, is like nothing that humanity has ever seen before. For one thing, its slopes are garnished not with old craters but young vertical streaks. The new hypothesis, based on numerous gravity measurements, holds that a bubble of mud rose from deep within the dwarf planet and pushed through the icy surface at a weak point rich in reflective salt -- and then froze. The bright streaks are thought to be similar to other recently surfaced material such as visible in Ceres' famous bright spots. The featured double-height digital image was constructed from surface maps taken of Ceres in 2016 by the robotic Dawn mission. Successfully completing its mission in 2018, Dawn continues to orbit Ceres even though it has exhausted the fuel needed to keep its antennas pointed toward Earth.

Synonym does not mean to have the same meaning.

It means having a common meaning. Usually, words have more than one meaning.

A maybe synonymous with  B and C

but not necessarily B and C are synonymous with each other.

So, synonyms can have the same meaning and a different meaning at the same time.

I was taught that we should use synonyms to avoid repetitions, to substitute an over used word or for aesthetic reasons. They are valid ways of using synonyms, but it is such a waste of their potential.

I want to substitute A

B-A- C

A-C-D

C-D-E

The magic of synonym is choosing C instead of B because C also means D.  So, you can use C as A and D.

And you can play with it.

The sentence before C has C as A, but the sentence after C has C as D

All the sentences has C as A and D at the same time

Or use C as A and later uses C again but as D

there are so many ways you can play with synonyms.

I use them a lot in my writing process. I developed a methodology to create the poems in this project. I start with the first sentences that come to mind, whatever they are. Then I start to look for synonyms. And the synonyms with the synonyms and I go on like this. Writing down all the words that call my attention, making a list.

Generally, sentences begin to take form as I go on with my search for words.  

Interesting things happen in the middle. For the poem "The farmer" i searched for words related to agriculture and it took me to the roman godness of agriculture Ceres. When I wrote her name in google search, the first result was Ceres, a dwarf planet. So I read about it, and in this sentence:

"From images taken of Ceres on 4 May 2015, the secondary bright spot was revealed to actually be a group of scattered bright areas, possibly as many as ten. These bright features have an albedo of approximately 40%[91] that are caused by a substance on the surface, possibly ice or salts, reflecting sunlight." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceres_(dwarf_planet)

The word albedo caught my attention as I didn't know what it means. So I wrote it down on my list together with its definition.

Days later, when I went back to write "The farmer" I had the sentence

"o fio que tece casúlo de mare-vermelha"  

that can be translated to  

"the thread that weaves red tide cocoon"

but I was not satisfied, I wanted to say more about the thread. A thread of what?

I tried many words, but none gave the feeling I was searching for. Then the world albedo came to mind, and it fitted perfectly. It was not the thread that weaves red tide cocoon; it was the thread's albedo.  

So this is an example of how I wrote some of the poems in this project. It was a methodology that I developed by doing it and trying to understand what nonsense poetry means to me.

How can I let my unconscious write my poems?

And this was the answer I found for myself.

But how can I let my unconscious do my drawings?

I still didn't find a methodology for this question. And it's making me anxious.

Eris is the second-largest known dwarf planet in the Solar System, slightly smaller by volume than the dwarf planet Pluto, although it is 27 percent more massive. Discovered in January 2005 by a team based at Palomar Observatory, it was named after Eris, the Greek goddess of strife and discord. The ninth-most-massive object directly orbiting the Sun, Eris is the largest object in the Solar System that has not been visited by a spacecraft. It is a member of a high-eccentricity population known as the scattered disk and has one known moon, Dysnomia. It is about 96 astronomical units (14.4 billion kilometres; 8.9 billion miles) from the Sun, roughly three times as far away as Pluto. Except for some long-period comets, Eris and Dysnomia were the most distant known natural objects in the Solar System until 2018 VG18 was discovered in 2018. Observations of a stellar occultation by Eris in 2010 showed that its diameter was 2,326 ± 12 kilometers (1,445.3 ± 7.5 mi).

Solar powered, Steven Universe & Barely Surviving

Are you ready? We hope so because here it is, another amazing episode from the goofballs of Nerd pop-culture to entertain you once again. This week we bring you some brilliant stories that are sure to educate (we apologise for those not looking to learn, we are Nerds, you have got to expect it). There are some laughs, so grab hold, strap in and let’s get this party started.

First up we have Buck with solar powered water filtration systems that are looking pretty darn good. Trust me, when you look at the science behind these you will understand why we got excited, I mean this is fantastic and the possibilities are amazing. While they are only in the early development stages the fact is that this is game changing technology to make life better.

Next up DJ has news about the Steven Universe movie, that’s right, not Marvel. Now we know that some of you are going to be fans of this on many levels, I mean who doesn’t like 80’s style dance and music to solving the world’s problems. It worked for the Care Bears and the Smurfs and they are still around, let alone Bob the Builder. Now, we won’t give away the storyline and details, but just remember we can fix it.

Next we have the Professor with the story of struggling game developers trying to make it big in a world full of nasty companies. This is a look at the realities of the various platforms available and the costs incurred in bringing games to an over saturated market. Think we are joking consider 40 plus games a day being released, some of which are clones. Now before anyone gets upset, software clones are not aliens who have escaped from Area 51. So, if you want to understand why Geeks and Nerds look stressed and sleep deprived this will explain it to you. Also it is why we review the games we are playing each week to try and help identifying something cool.

Next is the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. We take a moment in this to pay respect to the Swiss that even their train accidents are organised. While serious injuries and fatality is never a laughing matter the Swiss are the people who are so organised they make a German sweat about the details. That is it for another week, remember to take care of yourselves, stay safe, look out for each other and stay hydrated.

29 Jul 1833 - William Wilberforce, British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. In 1787, he came into contact with Thomas Clarkson and a group of anti-slave-trade activists, including Granville Sharp, Hannah More and Charles Middleton. They persuaded Wilberforce to take on the cause of abolition, and he soon became one of the leading English abolitionists. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for twenty years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. Wilberforce was convinced of the importance of religion, morality and education. He championed causes and campaigns such as the Society for the Suppression of Vice, British missionary work in India, the creation of a free colony in Sierra Leone, the foundation of the Church Mission Society, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Explanation: One of the strangest objects in the outer Solar System has recently been found to have a ring. The object, named Haumea, is the fifth designated dwarf planet after Pluto, Ceres, Eris, and Makemake. Haumea's oblong shape makes it quite unusual. Along one direction, Haumea is significantly longer than Pluto, while in another direction Haumea has an extent very similar to Pluto, while in the third direction is much smaller. Haumea's orbit sometimes brings it closer to the Sun than Pluto, but usually Haumea is further away. Illustrated above, an artist visualizes Haumea as a cratered ellipsoid surrounded by a uniform ring. Originally discovered in 2003 and given the temporary designation of 2003 EL61, Haumea was renamed in 2008 by the IAU for a Hawaiian goddess. Besides the ring discovered this year, Haumea has two small moons discovered in 2005, named Hi'iaka and Namaka for daughters of the goddess.
