Reminders
Inactive writers can become active again at any time! Just message an admin and we'll add you back to the regular headcount.
Inactive writers can always opt in for the occasional Friday! You will not be tagged in the headcount, but if you reply to the post before 4pm Pacific Time on Friday, we'll include you on the kickoff.
Regardless of whether you're active or inactive, DADWC members are always welcome to post and tag us on Friday nights. If an old prompt inspires you, write, post, and tag!

I just wanted to send a message saying thank you for the asks! I was looking at your blogs and I realized I know surprisingly little about any of those fandoms and I got no idea what to ask! D: That being said, I don't want that to be an excuse as to why you don't get -something-, so, tell us, what's something you've written in any of them that you're particularly proud of and why?
That's extremely kind of you, reciprocation is always appreciated but never necessary. Regardless, I understand some of my stuff can be a bit niche but I am also extremely open to exploring all avenues.
As to some stuff I'm proud of for writing, I'll put a couple here.
This is my recent writing project I did and I was really happy with the results. It's a Witcher OC story for some characters I made way back that I was advised I should revisit to some amazing results!
I love Cyberpunk and mecha stuff so I have a still back burner idea of trying to bring it to life. Back in 2022 I did a couple shorts for another DWC that I really liked and maybe I can finally 'worldbuild' up.
DWC 2022 - Conduit Dreams Lust/Chastity Gluttony/Temperance Charity/Greed Diligence/Sloth
I write a lot of Order of Embers stuff, it's pretty much dominated my WoW Roleplay life since BFA hit. I love them and still try to keep going with them as much as I can. I wrote this as a series from some asks I got, people seemed to really like them.
Zexx is my self insert that became someone so much bigger than I ever imagined. I created him twenty years ago when I was at one of my lowest times to try and escape from a lot of grief. He's grown with me and changed as much as I have to be inspired by my own life ups and downs. I wish I could be more like him and I think he wishes he could be more like me. Anyways, I wrote this in a manic mode as BFA was coming with the Fourth War underway and as a segway to briefly retire the hero for hire. Sadly, some really good people that inspired me and played with me have moved on without the precursors available to read before my stuff. Hopefully you'll be able to pick up on it here and there.
I wish had something particular to show from my Conan group, but it's mostly always been a bunch of short answers and drabbles. The best I could probably do is maybe search just Voldrin as he's usually the main character there. But there's a couple good ones too.
Beginnings
Song of the Witch Kingdom
Change on the Rise
So that's a bunch of stuff to try out of if you wanna touch base with me about writing, roleplaying, or worldbuilding. I'm pretty proud of this stuff and reading it over again made me smile. Thanks for the nostalgia and the idea of maybe kicking some of these back into working order.

Happy friday! for dwc, from the flufftober prompts for celestine/sebastian: "But you said"
Hiii!! Happy Friday 💖 Thank you so much for the prompt, I filled it right away :D It's a two-parter, since the first part was just her thinking/talking about Sebastian, not actually engaging with him. So I wrote a second section for that too ^^ @dadrunkwriting
--- Rating: M (for innuendos and implications) Characters: Celestine, Charli (Celestine's cousin), Sebastian Tags: Arranged marriage, family bickering, falling in love, non-Hawke romance, innuendos, love confessions, kissing, implied post "Annexing Kirkwall" war table mission, prince!Sebastian (Anders implied alive and well)
Summary 1: During a visit with her cousin Charli, Celestine is caught staring longingly at Sebastian who she once called a "rat" and vowed to never fall for. Charli isn't having it. Summary 2: Later in the evening, Sebastian joins Celestine on the balcony where she tells him what Charli said about him, leading them to discuss the feelings they'd barely suppressed for one another.
Full fic below the cut!
Celestine leaned over the balcony's marble railing, her eyes upon the sprawling gardens below. She'd perch here often to admire the busy world beyond the castle walls, though she so rarely had the desire to venture out. Since her arrival more than a year prior she'd taken to the solitude she had long wished for. She found it a place where she could be free from the endless chatter of her ladies in waiting and the demands of courtly life. From here she'd watched the seasons cycle, and so too had her life changed with the leaves.
He was not the kind of man she expected when she'd first found herself betrothed to a man with whose name had become synonymous with impulsivity and controversy, his reputation so infamous that other families hesitated to take up the Vael name, even with the promise of the highest nobility. A walking target for assassins, a man so deluded by his divine thirst for vengeance that he'd throw his city against an invisible threat and watch it burn for his cause. A tyrant, a libertine, a zealot, a monster. Those were what the rumors told—what she let herself believe—of him.
How curious it had been to find him a man who spoke softly, who would not lay with her despite their need for an heir, who, however rarely, laughed and smiled with such a warmth that it would make her heart skip. She'd hardly call him one of the Anointed, his reputation was not pulled from thin air, but he was surely incompetent, having never been trained for the throne. And eager had he been to learn under her hard guidance in exchange for an annulment when he was fit to rule alone—his own offering, having regretted the marriage he had forced upon her.
He'd displayed reasonable competence since a full summer ago, yet here she remained by her own will, quite reluctant to part from him.
She could hardly hear her dear cousin's endless animated chatter about Orlesian parties and the latest court gossip, too preoccupied with watching Sebastian mingle with their guests in the gardens. He moved among them with an easy confidence that she admired, a genuine smile that was newfound on his features as of late.
"Rats in the garden have your attention, cousin?" Charli asked, her eyes following the direction of Celestine's gaze.
"Pardon?" She looked up, suddenly remembering that the woman beside her was there.
"Ah, so only when I speak of the vermin do you hear me. You shame me, Tina. You've not heard a word of what I've said."
She felt her cheeks heat and turned her back to the railing, though it did little to ease her desire to continue watching her husband. "I'm sorry, my thoughts were elsewhere. But I was listening no less."
"Perhaps a test is in order, hmm? Tell me, who the Marquise was rumored to have had relations with at the Wintersend ball?"
Celestine's mouth opened in a silent 'o' as her mind went blank.
"So you weren't listening at all! What are you thinking about so intensely? It must be interesting. Perhaps about how you might bed the rat?"
"He isn't a rat," she hissed, a little too quickly and defensively. She hadn't meant to say anything at all, and it came out a reflex, as if someone had pulled the words from her lips.
Charli's eyes widened, though little surprise lay there as though she'd already drawn her own conclusions. "Such a change as I do believe you were the first to utter such a title." She paused, scrutinized, then whispered, "You're fucking him, aren't you?"
"No," she said, and the denial fell heavy from her tongue, though the guilt lay bare on her face. "We've never lain together. And I have no desire to, not with him. Not... in that way."
Charli sighed, shaking her head. "Yet you look well ready to hike up your skirts should he only ask." She clicked her tongue at her, a scolding mother hen. "Oh Tina, Tina. My dear cousin has fallen prey to the wiles of an ill-mannered rodent."
"He is not ill-mannered! I can go when I please and he's not placed a hand upon me. I've more work to do yet with regards to his training, then maybe I'll..."
"Maybe, is it? You defend him far too easily, dear. Have you forgotten that it is he who forced this arrangement upon you? You were so angry, you were ready to flee. What happened?"
She had no answer for her, not one that could be easily put into words. There was no moment, no instant, no time that defined what had changed between them.
"He is trying, Charlotte, give him grace. He has lost all, and is learning to rule under my council. You cannot deny that Starkhaven has grown better under his reign, even in a mere year."
"Only because he parrots your every word to the people. I do not deny his success, but it is your hand guiding his, not his own. His hands are still stained by the blood of the innocents he marched upon and the soldier's lives expended. I do not care how well he speaks or acts, his is not a soul worth redemption. He has the heart of a beast, and I would have you rid of him."
Celestine's face fell so hard she could feel it, so lost upon her words that she could do nothing but shake her head. "You don't know him, Charli, not as I. I am not blinded by love, or by lust, or by the naivete of the young. He has his faults... many, I will not deny, but he is not the villain you would have me think."
Charli's own features twisted in reluctant sympathy. "I suppose some of that may be true... but he is dangerous, Tina. The way you speak of him now, it is like a woman enamored. He could crush your heart and you would forgive him."
"He has not yet done so and has shown me only the stark opposite. I am no fool, Charlotte, I will not allow him the power to break me."
"He may find a knife in his belly should he try. I'm not above a spot of regicide." Her plum tinted lips lifted on one side, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Accept this fact and I may feel slightly better about your questionable arrangements. Tell him as such too, I want to see him quiver."
She rolled her eyes at her, but she found some relief at Charli's bizarre brand of compromise. "I'll see to it. He quivers so prettily. I think you'll be quite satisfied."
Celestine's hopes fulfilled, Charli gagged dramatically, waving her hand in dismissal. "You are a horrible, horrible girl. I knew you were bedding him."
She wasn't, but it wasn't as though the thought had never crossed her mind. "If you insist, cousin." She couldn't stop her laughter, her shoulders shaking from the effort.
--- Part 2 ---
Charlie had left, taking the noise and pomp with her, and Celestine was left alone again with her thoughts. She leaned on the balcony's railing, staring into the distance.
The day was ending and the guests had cleared from the gardens, the sky growing dimmer as the sun sank beyond the horizon. She hadn't even heard him enter, but she could feel him as he stepped up beside her, and she could smell his perfume as the gentle summer breeze blew his scent towards her.
He took his place beside her, leaning forward to rest his elbows upon the stone, their sides nearly touching. She looked up to find his eyes already upon her, a softness in his features that made her heart flutter.
"You look troubled," he spoke in a gentle lilt, his brows furrowed slightly in concern.
"She has a way of wearing me out," she spoke fondly of her cousin. As close as they were, like sisters, they had their fair share of disagreements. "She doesn't like you, thinks you're dangerous. She wants me to leave." The words slipped before she could think better of them and as they hung in the air she wished she could snatch them back, her stomach sinking.
Her eyes roamed his face for any sign of hurt or guarded emotion, but there was none. Instead he turned his gaze from her, a quiet contemplation upon his brow as he stared down at the gardens.
"I won't say that I'm surprised. I'm sure many have voiced the same opinion, and will continue to do so for many years to come. I've given them every reason. I do not expect to earn the respect of those I have wronged or who have witnessed my wrongs. But..." It was only then that his face grew dark, and his gaze turned to her again. "Do you wish to leave?"
She had no words. How could she explain the way he had her heart in a vice grip? How could she voice the feeling that she couldn't tear herself away from him, no matter her past wishes... The longing, the desire? How could she describe the way he looked at her, the way his voice could calm the worst of her storms, the way he'd touched her as if she were something delicate, sacred?
As he watched her, he seemed to grow more troubled with every moment that slipped by without her answer, though he stayed quiet, gave her space to find her thoughts.
"No..." she said, shaking her head. The first she'd admitted it to him. It was always an excuse, a delay, a lie to herself as much as him. She'd had countless opportunities to leave, and had never taken them. Even after his insistence, she'd never agreed outright to an annulment. She'd only asked that he wait until she'd taught him enough to not send the kingdom into ruins. And she'd stayed long past the point that she could use her training as an excuse.
"No?" he whispered, nearly inaudible.
"You are... different than I expected. I don't want to leave you. I haven't in a long time and I could not bear it."
She could feel him shift beside her, the tension easing from his frame, nervous hopefulness just barely restrained by the creases around his eyes. Slowly, his arm reached across her waist, giving her a chance to protest. When she didn't, he pulled her closer, her body against his, his fingers curling gently around her sides.
"Andraste bless me, I have tried to keep myself from you, but I'm a weak, weak man. I can no longer resist you. I want you free, happy, everything that you deserve... but I'd be lying to you if I said I wouldn't be devastated to lose your company. You are proof that there is still beauty and goodness in this world." He drew back to look at her, a conflict raging behind his eyes. "Forgive me, I..."
She shook her head and took his face into her hands. "You've no idea how I feel when you speak to me this way. I have known nothing but life at the end of my family's strings. I've been traded, paraded, and used. And then you... you take me from that life and show me kindness I have never known. You treat me like a person and I'm beginning to feel like one."
Her words had stunned him to silence, sad but adoring eyes taking her in as his head shook slowly.
"Sebastian?"
"The Maker's eyes upon me, I will try my hardest to be worthy of you. I have many sins to atone for, but none would be so great as to hurt you or betray your trust." He bowed his head against her shoulder, his nose brushing the side of her neck as he inhaled her and shivered. "You are precious to me, Celestine. If I am allowed to feel that... to say that to you... I need to know that you understand that I mean it with all of my heart."
Her hands slid from his jaw to the back of his neck, fingers carding through his hair. "I believe you..." she whispered, and he shivered as the warmth of her breath ghosted over his ear. She hardly suppressed a snicker at the accuracy of her predictions about him—he did quiver most prettily indeed.
"Charli said that should you break my heart, she'd kill you," she told him with a roll of her eyes beneath her half-closed lids.
"She asked no less than four servants to tell me as much on her way out," he said, equal amounts of dismayed amusement in his tone.
"She also said I look ready to hike up my skirts should you ask me," she spoke in a low murmur, her lips brushing over his skin. "She isn't always a poor judge of character."
He tensed against her, a soft gasp escaping him. "Maker preserve me..." he whispered and laughed, the words stuttering from him. "I think that's a conversation better had indoors."
"Right, inside... for more conversation, yes?" She teased, pulling away and making her way to the door. She beckoned him in and he followed, a step too quickly to be innocent. She shut the door behind them and took him at once.

L’Echelle Renea Head, 21 (USA 2000)
Tumblr media
Dayton Women’s Center was a health hazard. It was an abortion facility that was caught operating without a license in 1999. On October 27, 1999, to see if a license should be granted. Inspectors found rusty surgical instruments, failure to follow sterile technique and improperly-marked medications. The administrators were told they’d have to correct the problems to get a license. They got the license after getting a waiver regarding follow-up care for patients. Clearly they were not held to standards high enough to protect their clients.
DWC’s clients paid the price for the dangerously lax policies on abortion facilities. On October 11, 2000, someone found a 21-year-old unconscious and unresponsive. That person called the police just after 6:00 PM and the victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. Despite the attempts of the hospital, the mystery victim died that day.
The victim was identified as L'Echelle Renea Head. She left behind her parents, a daughter and three sisters. It was discovered that she underwent an abortion at the now fully licensed DWC facility. The autopsy results indicated she suffered from a pulmonary embolism.
After L’Echelle’s death, DWC was investigated again. This time the results were just as appalling. A staff member was pre-signing post-operative reports in advance, including reporting forms for operations that never happened. The facility’s director of nursing hadn’t even set foot in the building in months. The staff didn't follow proper procedure for control and accountability of drugs and the facility didn't have an agreement with a hospital for the transfer of patients in case of emergencies. Even after complaints prompted inspections, there was no evidence of evaluation, observation or training done since the many violations were uncovered. The state of Ohio started trying to revoke the facility’s license and it finally closed around January of 2001. On paper, DWC was not recorded as shut down by the health department because facility owner Goodwin publicly announced a plan to retire and close down DWC. Goodwin claimed that DWC’s closing had nothing whatsoever to do with the state’s attempts to revoke the license or the multiple health inspections. Goodwin claimed that all the violations found by the health department were “absolutely minor” and that the facility would pass inspection today if it was still open. (The health department’s records say otherwise.)
The horrible malpractice of DWC was finally at an end, but it never should have been allowed to continue for so long in the first place. Authorities should have shut down the facility as soon as the lack of license and disgusting conditions were discovered. Instead it was enabled long enough to lead L’Echelle to an early death under the claim of “safe and legal”.

For DWC, “You’re so cold, you’ve frozen; you’d shatter if you fell," for the character or pairing of your choice?
Thank you, my love!!😍❤️😍  Have some icy post-breakup Solasta @dadrunkwriting ❤️😅😅
“Inquisitor,” Solas reached out to pluck at her jacket, left with a fingerful of fur as she pulled sharply out of reach.
“Shut up, Solas.”
She found a handhold and pulled herself up, leaving his disapproving glower directed at her foot. Their trek to the Frostback Basin had been fraught with more obstacles than usual, and the landslide blocking their planned path only seemed to foreshadow the danger they were walking into. Her recent silence made her even more distant than before; Halesta had bristled angrily when he insisted upon accompanying her scouting climb, but hadn’t voiced her objection. Solas was glad he had come, as the increasing cold of higher altitudes was impacting her magic’s ability to keep herself warm. Her naked feet were now a painful violet-blue. Reaching out, he pressed heat through a finger into her heal.
“Ugh,” She shot a glare down over her shoulder at him, “...Thanks.”
The sheer face of this cliff was more difficult with the stiffness evident in her joints. He rarely took time to realize how much Halesta had aged since they first met, only occasionally recognizing the exhaustion and worry creasing the moonsilk of her forehead, the fragile skin around her eyes. He had aged quickly once, under similar stress…. She finally pulled herself onto the evened surface of the peak, disappearing from view. With a sigh of frustration, he followed the Inquisitor to the top.
Halesta was kneeling at the far edge, squinting to find a clear path for their friends in the growing darkness of the valleys below. The sun had set in the distance, and the dimming light was too much even for her elf eyes. Solas searched the ledge, spotting a small notch in the stone that would grant them some shelter from the icy wind. The Inquisitor’s jaw chattered, audible even from several metres away. He approached her side at the edge, and she visibly stiffened. Stretching his staff outward, a small, green light shot forth, scintillating briefly before disappearing in the air. Below them, a similar spark of purple shimmered in the dark vale: Dorian’s response to their flare.
“Inquisitor, come. You’ll see better at dawn,” He tugged at her cuff, receiving another glare, “Your body temperature is already too low as it is.”
“Don’t worry about my body temperature,” She turned away, less violently he noted, and headed toward the small hallow.
She took the small bag from her back, pulling a small blanket from inside and spread it over the snow-packed ground. Small ice flakes danced on the air, fluttering into the small chamber and catching in the plaits of her silvery hair. She sat with a thud, crossing her feet beneath her, still digging in her rucksack. Solas was surprised to see her pull out several handfuls of dry sticks, setting most in a pile before tenting a few. She looked at him expectantly and he knelt, setting them alight with the tiniest of sparks. He removed his cloak and spread it opposite of her, casting a barrier over the cavity mouth. It was slightly warmer with the fire and most of the wind blocked, but the Inquisitor’s extremities were discolored with restricted blood flow.
“Give me your feet,” He reached out, folding into seated position.
“Are you giving me order?” Scoffing, she eyed him bitterly; he rolled his eyes.
“Please, Inquisitor. You will be more hindrance than help if you lose your limbs to frostbite.”
“Ma nuvenin, Hahren,” Upper lip curled back in dissent.
Wrapping his fingers around one foot, he thought he had nearly forgotten how little they were. A single of his hands extended farther than a knuckle past the end of her toes. He rubbed warmth back into her chapped, aching skin and muscles while she was leaned back with arms crossed, staring indignantly into the fire. When he moved to the next foot, her eyelids were fluttering closed, her breathing deepened and brows knitted in concentration. He ran a thumb up along the arch, and she caught her breath, holding it for a moment before exhaling slowly. He nearly smiled, but it wouldn’t have been prudent given their current situation.
“There. Now hands,” He watched as eyes opened to scald him with liquid lilac ire.
“I’m fine now,” Crossing her legs again, tightened her arms around herself.
“Hands,” Meeting her gaze with matching stubbornness.
She sighed and shifted forwards, placing a hand in his own. He followed much the same movements, thumb upward along the center of her palm. Her eyes fell to the side again, and he recognized the annoyance at her vulnerability. The thought that she might need him for anything was a bitter pill. His eyes traced the familiar scowl tucked into her cheeks; forbidden emotions of ardor fighting to bloom in his chest. The fire dimmed more quickly than either of them had hoped; Halesta piled half of the kindling twigs atop the lethargic flames. By the time he had finished with her remaining hand, the loss of a nightlong fire was clear. Halesta huffed loudly as she moved her blanket towards him with a sort of sullen defeat. He kept his gaze from her face before curling around her small form in the deepening shadows.
“You’re so cold, you have nearly frozen,” Words emerging far more throaty than he had intended, “You would shatter if you tipped over.”
“Really? You’re going to try at small talk right now?” Muttered through clenched teeth, his cheek resting against the knotted muscle of her jaw.
“Hatred alone isn’t going to keep you warm, Inquisitor,” Tenderness she flinches against, fists tightening against the arms of her coat.
“Maybe I should just light you on fire,” Grumbled breath nevertheless drew a chuckle from him, reverberating in the hair’s breadth between them.
“Perhaps you should,” He could feel the heat rise beneath her skin, “It would be an amusing sight, at the very least.”
The abrupt force of her hips slamming back into his knocked a grunt from his lips, and he could almost swear he felt her cheek dimple with a smile beneath his jaw. He struggled to fight a mirroring smile from creeping along his own mouth as she muttered a soft “oh shut up”.
“Your magic ability has improved somewhat, I suppose I must admit,” He wasn’t quite sure why he was testing her patience.
“You mustn't do anything on my behalf,” Hissed, patience quickly waning, “I wouldn’t dare ask you for so much effort.”
“It is my duty,” Another hum of amusement, “Is it not, Inquisitor?”
That did it. She unsheathed the knife she kept holstered at her thigh, rolling herself so her knees pressed into his chest. The blade pressed to his throat was alarmingly sharp, he could taste the small knick it left in his skin. His eyes met hers just as the last of the flames flickered out, the sound of their breath all that remained in the dark.

AUs
Shadows in the Sun AU
My official DA4 world state! A Fereldan feral child stumbles across the Hero, Halevune Mahariel, and he helps her find her name: Ixchel. Clan Lavellan takes her in, and she volunteers to attend the Conclave as a spy for her clan. At only 16 years old, she becomes the Herald and then the Inquisitor. She is pulled in many directions by her advisors and companions and generally has a really fucked up world state. By the time Corypheus is defeated, Ixchel comes to think of the Inquisition as her family—a family that no longer needs an Inquisitor. With her clan massacred, Ixchel has no purpose and no place in the world. She attends the Exalted Council in the midst of a deep depression made worse by the Anchor’s destabilization and the tension of politics surrounding the Inquisition. Solas’s revelation—and his refusal to let her join him—drives her nearly to the edge of her sanity, and she never fully recovers. She spends a few years trying to thwart his plans or come up with an alternative, but she views it as a hopeless cause, and she leads a lonely existence in an empty Skyhold. In my Bloodied and Broken world state, she dies at this point. But in my DA4 world state, Kieran comes to her and pleads for her to help him find his mother, who bears the Well of Sorrows and has gone missing. Ixchel, now 26 or so, sets off with Kieran, now 21, to find the very farthest edge of Thedas—and what lies beyond it. (Assuming the Inquisitor does not make an appearance in DA4.)
Bloodied and Broken AU
As the world ends, Ixchel is resurrected under mysterious circumstances and is sent back in time to the Conclave. Ixchel is furious, convinced of her own futility, and yet she cannot give up again. These are the stories of how she gets better. Ixchel manages to sway Solas from the din'an'shiral and they continue their lives together. Canon-divergent after Here lies the Abyss. At the moment we're concerned with investigating the source of the Blight & cures, and figuring out how to deal with the (locked away for the moment) Evanuris, while racial tension between elves and humans in the south boils over.
One Wild & Precious Life AU
In an AU of the future of the Bloodied & Broken world state, Solas and Ixchel defeat the Evanuris, but the effort causes Solas to go into uthenera for perhaps hundreds of years. His last words to Ixchel are "live well." Ixchel goes to live in Kirkwall and becomes involved in politics of the Free Marches. Sebastian, Prince of Starkhaven and a widowed father of two, falls in love with her. Very chivalric and romantic.
Elvhenan AU | Arlathan AU
A resurrected Ixchel gets sent back not to the Conclave but to Elvhenan, with a fragmented memory. Dirthamen takes her in for interrogation/study, since she wears his vallaslin. As they learn about each other, they fall in love, and they both learn the extent of his family's evils. Ixchel becomes the Champion of Fen'Harel in order to be of a proper rank to court Dirthamen. Together, they help thwart the Evanuris and their tyranny. One of Mythal's former generals, Glory, was "gifted" to Andruil and has been turned into a demon as her main instrument of violence against Dirthamen, Solas, and Ixchel. Solas's closest lieutenant (and lover) is Hope (aka Felassan)
Blood Sealed Belief
Normally Ixchel meets the Hero of Ferelden in the wilderness, he tells her a pretty word and she decides that’s her name now–and then she runs away. She gets adopted by Clan Lavellan after a series of stowaways and other events, and then she goes to the Conclave. But what if Halevune Mahariel had adopted her that day? She'd be a whole different person. Mostly this AU is in its infancy but it's fun to explore how she'd be different.

Hey and welcome to DWC! For Cullen x your f!Lavellan, from the Summer prompts: "Café Patio + Afternoon + Sundress." Happy writing!
Thank you for the @dadrunkwriting prompt! I ended up casting my Lavellan from my fic "And When I'm Gone", although it became a vaguely ModernAU fill with the cafe modelled after a real-life place. Can you spot the sneaky Solas reference? XD
This is my first DADWC fill, I hope you like it! <3
CAFÉ KORNEL
Maker's Breath, she's beautiful, Cullen thinks when he spots Lavellan.
She's a vision, wearing a pale blue sundress, with her hair cascading down onto her shoulders in golden waves. The earthy, reddish-brown of her vallaslin melts together with the freshly emerging freckles gracing her cheeks. She glances up from the book she was reading and meets Cullen's stunned gaze with a soft smile. Her eyes are the same glittering bluegreen as the depths of the Amaranthine Ocean.
"Commander," Lavellan greets Cullen. "Did you have any trouble finding the place?" She asks. "I know it's a bit out of the way but..."
"Oh, no. No trouble at all," Cullen hurries to reassure her. "I apologize for being late. The meeting ran late and... no, I have no excuses." He barely stops himself from reaching up to awkwardly rub the back of his neck.
Lavellan laughs softly and her voice mixes with the birdsong. Her hair moves as the leaves flutter above them in the light breeze and Cullen is struck dumb once more.
"Please, Commander, don't worry about it." She motions for Cullen to take the seat opposite her and continues as he settles down. "We both have busy lives and many responsibilities. I am glad you could make it."
The café patio is not crowded but there are several couples and small groups of three or four, enjoying the early summer sun and the fragrant drinks. The late afternoon sun casts dappled shadows on the small, round, wrought-iron tables through the ancient trees edging the pavement. The café itself is half coffee shop, half gallery. There are various Dalish artefacts and art displayed inside the small space. Hand-carved wooden sculptures line the shelves and little paintings are set up in the big window. It's a unique spot hiding among the busy streets of Val Royeaux and Cullen is glad that Lavellan invited him for a drink here.
"I am glad too," Cullen says. "It's beautiful." You're beautiful.
"There used to be a gallery here. When the old owner passed away, the place kept changing hands for a while until the current owner bought the place and set up the café. It was touch and go for a while, whether it would fail too or stick around," Lavellan explains. She smiles, looking at the other patrons. There are lovers, families with small children, elves, humans, dwarves, even a qunari. "I'm not worried about it anymore."
Cullen can't help but echo her smile. The place certainly has a unique atmosphere.
Lavellan and Cullen keep conversing about the history of the place as the waiter comes and goes, taking their order and bringing out their drinks. Lavellan seems to enjoy talking about the community of artists that got attached to the gallery part of the café and Cullen likes to listen to her enthusiastic recollections.
"One time, they held a "music festival"," she explains. She's tracing random lines into the condensation on her glass of ice tea and her gaze is far away. "They only had the resources for one musician though, so they made it a family event and invited a Dalish folk musician to play children's songs and folk tunes the whole family could enjoy." She shakes her head and takes a small sip. "It was a success. I never would've thought, but it was these kinds of small events that let the café become so popular. It's all word-of-mouth advertising. They make the occasional flyer for events, but only post them around the close neighbourhood."
"This is amazing," Cullen says, truly enchanted. Perhaps more with Lavellan than with the story of the cafe, although that too is interesting. "Have you had any of your art featured here?"
The question takes Lavellan by surprise.
"Oh, no. No way. I'm not good enough," she shakes her head but cuts herself off. "I... haven't asked, to be honest."
Her cheeks redden in embarrassment but she doesn't look away from Cullen.
"I believe they'd say yes," he says in a moment of bold honesty.
Lavellan does look away this time. Her blush darkens and Cullen finds his bravery fleeing and hides his own blush behind his cup as he takes a gulp of his espresso.
"I... thank you," Lavellan says quietly. There's a hint of doubt in her voice though.
"I may not be an expert but..."
"The expert said my art is too modern to represent the Elvhen people. "Modern"... that was one of the nicer words he used."
Her words are bitter and her smile sharpens into a grimace. Cullen is left confused and not sure what to say. If Lavellan has not shown her work to the café's owner, then what expert had seen it and judged it so harshly?
Should he even ask?
The silence grows between them until Cullen makes a decision.
"You shouldn't let one opinion be the judge of your work," he says. "Unless you trust them implicitly."
Perhaps he's just thinking of Cassandra. She never kept her opinions uselessly wrapped in soft words. But her repeated reassurance that Cullen is capable at his job and even on his worth days should continue and not give up kept him going these past years. She's his harshest critic and she still sees value in his work after all. Maybe Lavellan had a similar friend once...
Or maybe she didn't have the kind of supporter that Cullen did. Her frown now hints at the latter.
"I... used to trust him but..." Lavellan trails off and is silent for so long that Cullen is ready to let go of the topic. Finally, she says, "That's been a long time ago. In another life..."
Her sudden smile is unexpected. Her eyes are bright and Cullen has the sudden sense of being seen to the depth of his soul. He doesn't look away and Lavellan's smile softens.
"You are right, Commander," she says. "I shouldn't let the past rule my future." She glances at the artwork displayed in the café's window. "I think I'll bring around some of my work soon and let them judge for themselves."
Cullen has no doubt they would love Lavellan's art. Of what he'd seen, they have a mysterious charm to them, captivating and thoughtful.
Their talk wanders to lighter topics again and as the sun drips lower toward the horizon, the time comes that they must part.
"Thank you, Commander," Lavellan said. "For a wonderful afternoon."
"Please," he says. "Call me Cullen."
Lavellan's smile is brighter than the summer sun.
"I hope we can meet again, Cullen," she says.
The kiss takes Cullen by shock. It is brief, just a light press of Lavellan's lips to his but it's enough to take his breath away.
Lavellan studies him for a moment as she draws back, then she turns and walks away. He doesn't even get the chance to say goodbye.
Perhaps he'll never want to.

The women of the area paid the price for the dangerously lax policies on abortion facilities.
Goodwin claimed that all the violations found by the health department were “absolutely minor and that the facility would pass inspection today if it was still open.
