Three Eras (2022) Movie Review

Three Eras is a lo-fi independent comedy inspired by film pioneer and vaudeville icon Buster Keaton, who wrote, directed, produced, and starred in his first feature film in 1923, called Three Ages. Almost 100 years later (actually 99… so close—just like Betty White!) brothers Jay and Mark Meyers have released their own biting satire on the never-changing human condition as shown in prehistoric times, the Old West, and the present.

Three Eras is billed as a “dark comedy” and it gives cinematic side-eye to governments, and the humans who run them, through the plot device of real estate. The piece is bookended by Father Time, who acts as a Greek chorus of one. In the first story, Buster (Jay Meyers) is a hapless caveman who tries to sell caves to other men. When the much bigger and brasher E.E.E.E. (Mark Meyers) shows up, he becomes a squatter in the cavern and causes quite a conundrum for poor Buster. Buster eventually embraces the “if you can’t beat them, join them” philosophy and decides to live with E.E.E.E. Needless to say, this is only the beginning of a complicated relationship. Next, we fast-forward to America in the 1800s where a schoolteacher named Jeff (Jay Meyers) finds himself pitted against his neighbor, Bud (Chris Kerr), over the construction of a railroad track that is set to tear through both of their properties. Our final stop is now, where we meet a trio of would-be social media influencers—brothers and real estate heirs, Sal (Mark Meyers), Jared (Jay Meyers) and Eric (Chris Kerr)—who publicly bully their cameraman, Don (K.C. Mackey), to the point that they become “insta-famous.” In spite of all this backbiting and social climbing, Father Time is there to remind us that in the end, we all wind up in the same place: the grave.

There are some religious undertones to Three Eras (“We were raised in the evangelical cult, so no matter how we approach writing a film, [being didactic] is inevitable,” say the directors in their press statement) but the film is mostly a gimlet-eyed stare at society and (bad) human nature.

The acting and writing are up to snuff for the most part, and the score is great, but the f/x makeup, cinematography, and editing leave a lot to be desired—Three Eras reminds me a bit of a very, very low-budget History of the World, Part 1 (1981) mixed with a dash of Clerks (1994). Only time will tell if the Meyers Brothers will be the next Mel Brooks or Kevin Smith… I rather doubt it, but I’ve got to give those guys an A for effort. It’s no simple task to make a feature-length film that’s partially a period piece and that tackles such deep subjects in a comedic manner.

While I can’t say I loved Three Eras, I encourage you to check it out for yourself—it definitely has appeal to a certain audience.

Semelhante à fase de Maestria da Jornada de Amy, é aqui que eles se tornaram intrinsecamente motivados para ficar e continuarão a usar o sistema em seu próprio ritmo.
