"Recently, a wave of fresh paranormal romance books have hit the shelves. The real question is, which new books should you pick up?
Paranormal romance is a subgenre of romance that follows the HEA/HFN (happily ever after/ happy for now) arc of human, non-human, and/or superhuman characters. The paranormal beings involved could be ghosts, werewolves, vampires, witches, or other supernatural creatures of legend that slot into a paranormal version of our world. If it’s in a high fantasy otherworld or is a monster romance, I am following the judgment of fellow Book Riot writer Jessica Pryde in her paranormal romance recommendation list and disqualifying them from this round-up.
As a longtime fan of the genre, I have plenty of backlist recommendations and a carefully curated list of fresh paranormal romance books. Every book here was published in the last five years, between 2019 and 2024. As a general personal rule, I like my paranormal romance to have believable, well-developed characters and a plot that hooks me in. If either the love interests or plot are paper-thin, my attention swiftly drifts. So, if you are looking for a witch, werewolf, vamp, or otherwise paranormal being falling in love, I’ve decided these are the ones you should read."

Black Dogs, Black Tales - Where the Dogs Don’t Die: A Charity Anthology for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, edited by Tabatha Wood  and Cassie Hart, Things in the Well, 2020. Cover art by Francois Vaillancourt, info: thingsinthewell.com.
Tails that wag and tales that tell of vampire dogs, undead dogs, and canine superheroes. Some save our souls and protect the world while the others try to crush us. These spine-tingling tales aren’t shaggy dog stories. Agains all odds the dogs survive. An international community of writers, poets, and artists came together to bring their best dark fiction to this collection, where there is only one rule: “the dogs don't die.” A charity anthology for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

Xenosaga Episode III Part 23a: The End of the Universe
Xenosaga Episode III Part 23a: The End of the Universe
Previously on Xenosaga: Shion was the director of Vector R&D First Division. She was anxious to activate the KOS-MOS project, a sentient android that also doubled as an anti-gnosis weapon. Shion decided she would enter a virtual reality construct to oversee KOS-MOS’s mental development. Then a bunch of stuff happened, and now her ex-boyfriend and boss are working together to reboot the entire…

Xenosaga Episode III Part 20: Deeper into the Shallow End
Xenosaga Episode III Part 20: Deeper into the Shallow End
Previously on Xenosaga: Margulis found out his life was a lie, Canaan admitted his life was a lie, and Pellegri said good-bye. It’s 20:39, we just beat Voyager, and it’s time to venture deeper into the abyss that is the final dungeon of Xenosaga. If we check out Voyager’s final resting place (uh, he was vaporized, so maybe this doesn’t count?), we’ll find a shaft that is currently unusable. This…

cousins!!!!
da lore…
the e.s. simeon has the ability to absorb living beings and their wills. as shown in episode i, it absorbs a kirschwasser, and for the purpose of simmy (oc edition), i am making that specific kirschwasser the one from the anime/ds game (aka kirsch). after being absorbed, her will lived on within the e.s., and she became a part of it. for whatever reason, her will was extremely strong - to the point where she did not disappear completely even after becoming a part of simeon. after albedo disappeared in episode ii with simeon, what reappeared was not the e.s. itself - it was an amalgamation of kirsch and simeon's vessel of anima (the closest term to refer to them would be a realian cyborg...). they are a being that is not quite kirsch and not quite an e.s./vessel of anima (vs asher - who is an e.s. given a consciousness/emotions and uses his memory banks to know what has happened/occurred/etc...), the memories that exist in their mind are kirsch's, and so are their feelings. despite that, they don't exactly consider themself to be kirsch, and will refer to her in third person. albedo interchangeably calls them by kirsch and simeon. he does not interact with them until after becoming a testament. he assigns simeon the task of observing the party in his place. the testament!frame of the e.s. simeon also coexists with them, and if need be, they could pilot it with no issues. they are very, very shy, and do not like to show their organic side (kirsch), so when in battle, they cover their face with a helmet resembling the original e.s. simeon's head. they also do not refer to themself by anything in battle/general. they will only remove their helmet when with albedo, or someone they otherwise trust (eventually, they warm up to momo... and of course, jr. as well. i'd think kos-mos as well for robotish solidarity, and then shion...). if one is close to them, that is when they can call them by a name and used gendered pronouns (she/her is what simeon prefers in such cases).
they dont refer to themself as anything though, they don't like claiming to be anything. their goal is mostly whatever albedo wants. she cares for him to an insane degree. luckily, since they only meet up after getting Testament'd, albedo does genuinely see her as her own little entity. he asks what she wants to be called but she doesnt really answer due to not wanting to refer to herself as anything, so albedo defaults to simeon and kirsch (and sometimes no name). but its not because he thinks shes kirsch, its more so that he wants to treat them correctly, which he didn't with kirsch... so its a reminder to himself to do better, now that he actually can.
