Drones and Searching For Rare Earths (Lodger)

I just wanted to briefly look at some of the things I plan on making my character do, in order to build these things into his design so that they can be more accurate than for example just having a laser come out of his eyes. One of the things he needs to do is to build a companion, so he needs to gather and find raw materials. 

The company I looked at uses a machine and drone to search for useful materials in Ucon, Idaho. The machine itself doesn’t actually drill like my character will, but it uses and tests soil sampling, and the company uses a drone to survey and map out the area. The company then combines the information to draw grids on potentially good areas and figure out what’s beyond their soil samples. They use “mobile drill technologies” that they send out to drill even deeper into the core. The product outcome is 3D on the surface and below the surface.

The vehicle itself is a big tracked vehicle to drive around in mountainous areas or snowy areas. From my research, it looks like the top carries the large soil sampling tube that extends out towards the front, and there is presumably other equipment and an engine under that can be manually used. The back has two rods that fold down to keep it stationary when it needs to be. (8)

Raw Materials

I thought this would be interesting to research because people make interesting things out of rare earths and I thought it could give me some inspiration as to what the new bot/environment that’s being created can do. While China holds most of the known rare earths, they can be found spread out, deep within the earth's crust. They're crucial materials for many hi-tech products, including phones, tv screens, cars, aircraft engines, X rays.  

Neodymium is a good example of a rare material that the lodger might find useful, as it’s found in computer hard drives and hybrid cars. Praseodymium is used to make strong metals and glass, it can be found in aircraft engines. It turns out that a lot of these can be used to make lasers. (9,10)
