I grew up in a little known cult called Eckankar. It didn't have the really fucked up stuff like slavery or suicide like the big ones do, as far as I know, but BOY are they BIG on policing thoughts and purity! Stopping the habit of Thought Policing and Avoiding Wrong Think REALLY took a while. So, yea, encouraging people to police their thoughts in order to avoid wrong think and stay 'pure' is a tactic that cults use to control people.

I really think everyone needs to truly internalize this:

Fictional characters are objects.

They are not people. You cannot "objectify" them, because they have no personhood to be deprived of. They have no humanity to be erased. You cannot "disrespect" them, because they are not real.
