📘 Shadow Rose 📚 Daughters of Moon and Sun 🖋️ Elsie Quail ➡️ Synopsis 🌞🌞🌞🌙 Firstly, I fell completely in love with this cover. It is just absolutely gorgeous! The premise of the story was also rather compelling and I do love a well-spun fantasy world. The world setting itself is really quite wonderful, especially the contrast between the human world vs. the Afterlife. The details of magic and different creatures to the compellingly dark dungeons where the Lady of Darkness was being kept prisoner kept me riveted. I also love a good quest for which these 3 friends set off to right a wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn't too keen on these characters. Maybe, it was my expectations... I somehow wanted Maeva to be just like Mia from The Nevernight Chronicles. Okay, not exactly but bad ass because, at the start of the book, that's what she kind of sounds like. However, she wasn't, exactly... She and her friends cried quite a lot in the book. I don't know why I mind so much when my tears are pretty much on tap but it bothered me. Her interaction with her bff & love interest was also really awkward which is in one way understandable BUT I kind of found the first time they actually got it together so very truly awkward or just really weird (in terms of setting than sexual content). But then again, it could just be me. This book is obviously not for children and these characters are also not children but yet, they also stamped their feet a number of times! I honestly can't remember the last time I stamped my feet because I'm upset, can you? Overall, lovely setting, really promising story arc but I was just unable to empathise with these characters. Another week has flown by, so that means it must be SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT! This one is a bit of a throwback, in that it’s not a recent publication and in its formatting. On a recent trip back home (NJ) I visited @sourceofknowledge books and feeling nostalgic I put this in the bag. I wrote ✍🏿 The very best thing about this book are the quotes taken from some classic books in the Afrocentric canon. There was a time in the late ‘80s thru the 90s where certain texts were considered must reading. The lecture circuit was on fire, study groups were a popular thing and learning was THE thing to be about. So this book harkens back to that era. The terms “facts” and “”proof” are used quite loosely in the books description and misleads the reader into thinking he/she will be inundated with facts and proof. Well there are some, but most are from other texts, so you would have to check out those books to get greater context. Here, we just have claims strung together sentence after sentence with little context leaving the proof very sketchy. This book is a fire starter, igniting your interest. A throwback that I found on a bookshelf in a Newark, NJ bookstore. I was feeling nostalgic and jumped on this book. I knew I was familiar with most of, if not all of the contents, but I bought it anyway. The African presence in America before Columbus, The blackness of ancient Egypt, The wonders of the Moors and their influence on Spain, etc. I will reiterate what I said at the top, the BEST thing about this book is the reference to other scholarly texts that offer in-depth research and logical assumptions. QOTD - Which Sci-Fi series you enjoyed most or last series you loved? Obsidio (The Illuminae Files #3) by Amie Kaufman @rocktheboatnews Obsidio is a thrilling rollercoaster ride and fantastic wrap up of The Illuminae Files trilogy that revolves around another two couples Asha and Rhys planning to save survivors and their own lives before BeiTech obliterates Kerenza; at the same time our four favorites- Kady, Eza, Hanna and Nik taking the survivors of Heimdall, Hypatia, Alexander back to Kerenza to take over Beitech’s jumpgate. The story is about justice, survival, courage, sacrifice, desperation and determination, conscience, ageism, the responsibility of war, love, betrayal, friendship, trust, and second chance. My most favorite part- Ella and Issac’s chats, Issac’s letter to all young characters, their last face to face conversations, execution of the plan that they kept super secret until this part and one by one the way they rolled their die and making them fall on their own term and shook the table if they didn’t fall in their own terms. There is Nothing negative I can think. If you’re fan of Space opera, I don’t know how you cannot love this book and series. Okay, I have one complaint. Why the hell there isn’t a spinoff series? Overall, Obsidio is thrilling, mindblowing, action packed, full of twists and turns, a perfect rollercoaster ride in space that I wish never ended. 📓 Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution 🖋️ R.F. Kuang 🎓🎓🎓🎓✒️ "Professor Lovell liked plain scones the least, though, so sultana scones were the staple of their afternoon teas ... [Robin] knew he didn't like sultanas in his scones; when Professor Lovell wasn't looking, he picked out his sultanas, slathered the denuded scone in clotted cream, and popped it in his mouth." Ok so the above quote doesn't really have anything to do with the plot in the book but seriously, all the mention of scones made me crave for some so what does one do but bake some! I'd suggest some fresh scones ready for reading the first part of the book but after that, I really needed wine. A. Lot. of. Wine. Honestly, I was wary of this book after The Poppy War trilogy. I mean that trilogy was violently brutal! And seriously, R.F. Kuang does not hold back her punches. Babel is excruciatingly brutal. I find that with The Poppy War trilogy, there is that veil of fantasy but in Babel, while there is still that fantasy veil, it is ever so sheer. Babel is a very dense reading. The amount of research must have been astounding. There was so much in this book from general history to linguistic ones. As the author has noted, however, certain things were fudged a little bit to fit because, after all, this is a work of fiction. I can't tell you what's been fudged but I'm still so very impressed with the meticulous details presented in this novel. Crazy Rich Asians (Crazy Rich Asians #1) by Kevin Kwan ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Crazy Rich Asians was entertaining, fun, dramatic, steady paced fiction with amazing characters and fantastic details on East Asian culture and tradition. The story was about East Asian culture, tradition, life style of crazy rich people, snobbery, prejudice, social class difference, perceptions towards people from mainland China or overseas, family, friendship, and love. Writing was interesting. It wasn’t like anything I read in any book. It was simple and yet had that captivating feel, descriptive and vivid. The story was written in multiple third person narrative from many charatcers’ POV which was surprising as before I started book I was expecting Rachel and Nick’s view more in focus but here all characters were given equal importance. This was more character driven with lots of characters.I loved Astrid and Oliver most out of all secondary character. Rachel was great throughout the book. I loved how she went through everything she faced. Nick was lovely and I enjoyed reading more about him. Best part of the book was footnotes explaining East Asian words, which language it was and what it meant along with more details on traditions, culture and other things like social class and political things. It was first time I read a book that was more focused on culture and lifestyle and gave so many details on it. Why 4 stars- There was less romance than I expected. I also wasn’t expecting much focus on side characters. I feel they shadowed both Rachel and Nick.
