AU where Eddie is a drug dealer going to pick up his next shipment when he notices a guy tied to a chair in the back. The guy gives him a little smile. He’s got blood in his teeth.

Eddie’s told not to worry about it and he’s not dumb enough to argue so he gets his shipment and gets the hell out of there.

He’s in his van and five miles away when he has the holy hell scared out of him by someone climbing into the passenger seat from the back like, “Hey, thanks for - stop screaming. Thanks for the ride. I’m Steve.”

It’s the guy that was tied to the chair so - so - “How the hell did you get out of that chair?!”

Steve holds up his hand. His knuckles are bruised, his half his fingernails actively bleeding, and yeah. The clearly dislocated thumb.

With his good hand (still bleeding but not dislocated), he pops the tab on one of the beers Eddie had in the back and takes a drink. He gives Eddie a look and then says, “Don’t be dramatic about it, okay?”

“Dramatic about wh- oh god,” Eddie swore at the sickening noise of Steve relocating his thumb. He slams on the breaks because, “No. Nope. You’ve got to get out. Now. Go.”

“No way, man,” Steve says, way too fucking casual for this conversation. “We’re in this together. You’re my accomplice.”

“No, I’m not. I don’t even know you.”

“I’m Steve,” Hw introduces again. “You think they’re going to care about the semantics, Mr Getaway-Driver? I don’t think they will.”

Eddie swore again.

He started driving and some time went by before he asks, “What did you do to piss off a bunch of drug dealers?”

“Drug dealers?” Steve snorts. “Those guys were not drug dealers.”

daydreaming about a phone call that won’t happen a couple of episodes down the line…

“I’m not the dog, Buck!”

“What?”

“I thought I was the dog, but I’m not!”

“Eddie, what are you talking about?”

“You were glad when that family showed up and took the dog, right? Because they loved him and it was where he belonged?”

“Right…”

“And I thought I was the dog. You thought I was the dog, but I’m not. I don’t belong here. I don’t.”

“With Chris, I meant. You belong with Chris.”

“Right!! And I’m not the dog, Chris is!”

“Eddie, I just meant—”

“Buck, please, listen.”

“Okay.”

“The fire was bad, right, the fire and the shelter was a bad situation, and you rushed in to help, and you meant well, and you did help that dog. You loved that dog. You loved it and you took care of it, but no matter how well you took care of it, and how well you loved it, you couldn’t be what was truly best for it, right? That’s why you were happy when it went back to its owners. Because it belonged with that family. Who loved it. Right?”

“…right.”

“I’m not the dog, Buck, Chris is. Chris is the dog.”

“Eddie…. What are you saying to me?”

“I want to come home. I think we need to both come home. Back where we belong.”

“Here? L.A.?”

“Yeah, Buck. To L.A., to you. The people who love us, right?”

What is this? Can we stop with the Eddie agenda? He wouldn't help Dustin with experiments. He failed to graduate twice and hates school. He wouldn't help him connect with his friends because he doesn't care for the party like that prior to the events of s4. He likes to collect his little "sheep" who listen to his philosophies about society. He sees himself as a mentor who enlightens people, but he is not friends with them. Dustin and Mike were terrified even talking about postponing a stupid game so they could support Lucas. They don't see him as an equal, they admire and fear him.

Dustin's and Eddie's "friendship" is a mentor/student one. It's not like Dustin and Steve's friendship, which is based on mutual respect (at least prior to s4). Steve never made Dustin feel scared to ask him about favors. He respects him and is not acting like he's above him.

Let me have a book about their friendship and the struggles of season 3. How Dustin is navigating the move of their friend, how he deals with watching Max ascend into depression and how he feels about starting high school. With Steve by his site because they went through fucking hell together in s3 (and s2). How is their relationship gonna change after those events? What led to them being that way in s4. We don't need an Eddie-Dustin centric book, especially not about Eddie helping Dustin with his friends.

I swear all we get in that book will be Dustin being absolutely mean to Steve, insulting his intelligence every other page. Steve won't be smart enough to help him out there. No thanks.

eddie's mustache is never just facial hair, it symbolizes a disguise, a mask. little armor if you will. after chris leaves to el paso, eddie lets the mustache grow in like a barrier, as something to hide behind while he tries to keep it together. it's a subtle sign of the grief he isn't ready to speak out into existence, a tangible way to carry the weight of his guilt and loss. but when he finally shaves it off, it symbolizes a shift. it's a decision to stop punishing himself, to open up to healing, and to let joy in. shout out to father brian

Thinking about Eddie growing out the mustache™ more noticeably in a break between shifts- and when he shows up at the firehouse Gerrard sees him & makes an approving noise and says something bastardy about "there finally being something he can respect about Eddie now he's followed his example" and gestures at his own mustache. And Eddie just stands there frozen for a second and then turns and fully walks out and drives home & immediately shaves it off skss.

(I'm thinking like in b99 when Jake realises how bad the frosted tips look when he sees Charles but with that extra layer of utter horror and hatred y'know. Tfw you grow a sad mustache because your son went to stay with his grandparents but you accidentally twin with your asshole boss)
