FFXV: Noctis’ mother + some related theories
No matter how much time passes, this topic has always claimed my attention a lot because it’s... a bit weird.
We know absolutely nothing of Noctis’ mother, except her name, that it was Regis’ childhoold friend, and that she died when Noctis was little (and about that, yet another blank space of information).
I mean, Noctis is the main protagonist of the game, and it’s not that his mother is barely mentioned, or whatever, no... I don’t recall her ever being mentioned. At all. Unless it’s mentioned in FFXV: A King’s Tale (which I haven’t finished), it never is. However she has a name, which given the fact that she’s never mentioned, it’s curious.
Her name is “Aulea”.
I’ve searched a lot and, so far, “Aulea” doesn’t really mean a thing... Weird, in my opinion, that the name of the mother of FFXV’s main character would have no meaning, given the fact that a lot of characters do have a meaningful one.
However, in japanese there’s no “l”, so if we take that into account, her name would be left as “Aurea”... which does have a meaning. This is what the Wikipedia says about it:
“Aurea is a Latin female name meaning "golden". Meaning and name origin: Aurea \a(u)-rea\ as a girl's name is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Aurea is "Golden; Golden-haired; gold; Wind; Dawn; breeze". Aurea is a variant of Aura (Latin); mythology: Aura was the goddess of breezes. Aurea has 3 variant forms: Auria, Ora, Oria.”
Fitting name, given the fact of who Noctis is meant to be.
Given the name’s meanings, and something that Tabata said to a Kotaku worker (the article literally says: << As for the game’s other loose threads? Well, Tabata wouldn’t tell me who Noctis’s mother is, hinting that that might be a plot point in the future. (“I can’t say right now.”) >>), well...
... I guess we’ll see, sooner or later, a bit about her? I mean, “I can’t say right now” pretty much hints at it.

I certainly would love to know more about her, all the more given the meaning of her name. It could be something just symbolic, or maybe more than that. Who knows, as of now. It’s probably just going to be something symbolic, buuut one can have fun imaginating, right?
Hey Square-Enix... What about a Regis DLC of when he was younger, in which we get to know more about Aulea (and see her), have Ardyn messing around, and see younger Nyx, Libertus and company coming to Insomnia? That would be a lot lololol but it would be just so awesome *shrugs*

Maybe I’ll use this to write a fanfic to be honest lol
Talking about having fun imaginating... It’s theory time!
First things first.
There’s an interesting information about the gods in the German version of the Shiva speech. Whereas in other versions (for example the Spanish —of Spain— and the English ones) it doesn’t state it, at the start of this one Shiva explicitly says:
“The gods were ordered to protect this planet. Each of them fulfilled this task in their own way.”
We have to thank @mistress-light for the translation, which you can find her post here:
https://mistress-light.tumblr.com/post/170309113612/ffxv-german-translation-of-the-astral-war
That phrase would point that the gods we know wouldn’t be the only ones, and that there’s something more powerful than them (also, an interesting thing is that they were called “Espers” long time ago, something one gets to know in FFXV: Comrades). Now, imagine this (crazy) theory...
Imagine that that “something” is Eos... and that Eos is BOTH goddess and planet. Not simply a goddess, not simply the planet. Imagine that Eos created the world using her body, while her soul and will would remain in the Crystal. She wouldn’t be able to protect the planet and its inhabitants herself, and she would have to entrust the other gods with the task.
Another option is that, when the Starscourge appeared (another interesting thing: the German version states plainly by mouth of Ardyn that it was Meteo what brought the Starscourge (*)) and they needed to get rid of if, that she would “sacrifice” herself and put her soul inside the an average crystal that would become “THE” Crystal so that it could bless with light, hence she wouldn’t have fought Ifrit.
(*) (Source: https://thelifestream.net/final-fantasy-xv-lore/final-fantasy-xv-fan-theories-and-observations/theories-and-observations-about-the-story-and-world-of-ffxv/ )
But I think it would fit more if she would have used her body to create the world to be honest, because if she hadn’t, she could have just simply given her blessings and fought in the War of Old.
Now... Imagine something even a bit more crazy: imagine if Aulea would have been a Messenger, but of Eos. Think of the meaning of Aulea’s name and then look at Eos in the “Genesis” painting. It would be kind of fitting, isn’t it? Also, wouldn’t that make for an interesting love story, a king of Lucis and a Messenger?
One of the things we almost have no information about though is, precisely, the Messengers. We know their role, but we don’t know exactly if they can act as vessels the gods can use, another appearence they can take (under which circumstances?), a fusion of entities...
Extra theory: the part of the Pitioss Ruins in which the female statue falls back could be literally Eos (the planet represented with the form of the goddess) falling to the Starscourge; and the demon that, regardless on which part of the dungeon, has its eyes on her, could be a personification of the Starscourge.
EDIT: lol the Crystal must be quite crowded no? The soul of the planet, Bahamut, the spirit of Luna (since she talks labeled as “Mysterious Voice” to Ignis in his episode), then later on Ardyn and Noctis, (along with his ancestors) seem to somehow be there before it all ends too —which made me thought as well that maybe the Crystal could be something like a “Cristalline World” (fans of a certain FF would understand what I mean)—...
