This is Vangelis’ fourth studio album, released in 1976. It’s electro-prog, if that genre even exists, or ‘space rock’; a concept album themed around space physics and the reflection of light. Specifically, the reflection of light from a planet, its albedo. The explanation on the back cover sleeve defines this: “The reflecting power of a planet or other non-luminous body. A perfect reflector would have an Albedo of 100%. The Earth’s Albedo is 39%, or 0.39” The opening track Pulstar is the most upbeat, not dissimilar to Jean Michel Jarre’s Oxygene No 4, though perhaps not as familiar. Then alongside spacey synths we have the British speaking clock and excerpts of astronauts’ conversations from the Apollo moon landing. The tracks merge and flow into one another and by the time we’re on the fourth, imaginatively called ‘Main Sequence’ we’re in full-on prog mode, with jazzy rock drums, sax-like synth solos and it all sounds a little like his audition for the Blade Runner soundtrack, six years in the future. Vangelis is a titan of electronic music, and I sought out this record specifically because the ‘space rock’ element appealed to me. In addition to the brilliantly evocative, yet more conventional ‘tunes’ of Pulstar and Alpha, there are the wildly creative orchestral suites Nucleogenesis Parts One and Two. The title refers to the process that creates atomic nuclei from protons and neutrons and created the Big Bang. For these pieces Vangelis brings out the big church organ to compliment his synths, drums and “all other sounds” as he is credited on the album. He is sole composer, producer and performer too. The album finishes with his sound engineer reciting key space physics stats about the Earth over an atmospheric track. It will take you back (forward) to dystopian LA, 2019. #vangelis #albedo #pulstar #electronicmusic #synthesizer #soundtrackcomposer #bladerunner #progressiverock #electroprog #vinyl #recordcollection #nowplaying #nowlistening #randomrecordreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CE1fwBZJtfv/?igshid=wss6vu742oa9
