Sketching in grayscale tonight at the A’s game using my version of the watercolor watch invented by @koosjekoene ‘s dad (search for the YouTube video for instructions) - swipe to see it up close. I have included Daniel Smith’s Lunar Black watercolor (top left), Art Graf’s powder water soluble graphite (left bottom), white gouache (top right), and India ink (bottom right). We finally made it to Soba Ichi to try the handmade soba noodles by one of the few soba masters in the world and definitely in the US. The chef, Kochi Ishii, trained in Japan for 3 years and brought a grain mill from Japan to grind his own buckwheat flour from Washington state buckwheat. The noodles sell out every day - so, we arrived 15 minutes before they opened today to make sure we got to try the jyuwari (100% buckwheat) soba noodles. I loved the Emotions in Grayscale workshop with @marugodas today near the Warming Hut. It is so fun working with new media and creating new textures and “accidents” - so much fun! Here is my final sketch and our warm up exercises and thumbnails. Someday I’ll have a Black Sketchbook just for these types of sketches. Getting acquainted with grayscale sketching before tomorrow’s Emotions in Grayscale workshop with @marugodas in the Presidio. I can’t wait! I couldn’t stop myself from “fixing” this sketch today. Honestly, I did about 2/3 of the sketch yesterday in the last 5 minutes when we were being called to show our sketchbooks - as a result, my painted ladies were floating above the ground and many of the people @marugodas taught us how to sketch were missing their tiny heads. So, today, I went back in and added the ground floors of the houses and missing heads in the crowds. I added a few lines and tons to the city skyline- but didn’t want to do to much there or it would pull them forward in space. What do you think? Do you like this new grounded version better ortho original sketch from yesterday (swipe to see). I also found one more sketch from Maru’s Emotions in Grayscale workshop that I forgot to post on toned paper that she gave us. I’d love to hear your thoughts on working in grayscale.
