They miss his frequent chatter - it's too quiet without him. Omega frequently tears up when she's flying the ship, his voice in her head gently reminding her to check the fuel gauge and brake status as he always did while mentoring her.

One day Tech's datapad pings. It hasn't gone off in a long time. On the screen is Tech's notification to commemorate a year's passing since Wrecker ate a full meal during their first evening on Pabu.

It's almost like he's still with them.

The conclusion to 'Inauthentic Selves'

“I was inspired to investigate the election funding behind the Anchorage ‘bathroom bill’ municipal ordinance, not by anything relating to transgenderism, but researching how philanthropy empowers other causes into the stratosphere. I wondered — how much of this is also happening with identity politics? I wanted to follow the money. And thus, that set off months of investigating funding, causes and lobby groups. The totality of my research was impossible to fit into a single article. But the evidence is clear: transgenderism isn’t a real civil rights movement.

Let us think about it: what every group in the transgender lobby is demanding is essentially guaranteed access to medication for off-label purposes. None of these drugs are approved for transgender uses. Given the data we do have and the state of the science behind that data, accompanied by the side effects up to and including death, it is unlikely to ever be approved by the FDA in a clinical trial. Unless, of course, the side effects were better than the outcome. Hence, the creation of a perception that transgender people are murdered a at higher rates than the general population, even though that isn’t true. Saying that the side effects are better than the suicide of the patient probably wouldn’t pass muster either, given that medical intervention did not change the fact that transgender people have elevated suicide rates compared to the general population.

Hence our endless bad statistics and fake news. A survey with methodological flaws and some good messaging can cover for the actual reality, at least to the general public. Because the one way these ‘treatments’ could get approved is if the problem is worse than the side effects and the solution — this poor, gender dysphoric wilting flower of a person will kill themselves or be murdered unless they can access ‘gender-affirming healthcare’. Dangerous drugs that have failed clinical trials before could be issued on-label for this process, and protected by civil rights legislation. That the ideology that is built around these demands is incoherent, serves only to foist drugs on to vulnerable people, and is fundamentally homophobic is of little consequence to those who see the dollar signs. Transition could be a big business, which over a 50-year period of ‘transition’ could create a market worth trillions of dollars, if not more. Think of the potential markets! Surgeries that run into the six-figures. Body modifications that have not yet been invented outside of science fiction. And some of the 90’s best-selling-drugs, drugs that could be best-sellers again if only they had blanket approval to be used on a class of people once again.

Almost every philanthropist I investigated had financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry — George Soros and his connections to Pfizer and chemical company Monsanto, Jon Stryker, who is an heir to the Stryker Corporation, which makes medical and surgical supplies. The lone exception was Jennifer Pritzker, who appears to be ideologically motivated, particularly given their transition. Pritzker is extremely-right wing. Perhaps homophobia is their reason, or perhaps they truly believe. Maybe it really is about being ‘validated’ as a ‘woman’. If so, Pritzker is being taken for as much a ride as any other activist, they simply have more fiscal ability to promulgate the ideology. The ideology is a byproduct of the main goal — which is guaranteeing access to expensive, off-label drugs for a group of people, with civil protections. That the ideology has morphed into one that demands lesbians make themselves sexually available to male bodies, where ‘sexual fluidity’ is considered the ideal, and had its language appropriated and used by Christian conversion therapy groups promising a ‘cure’ to homosexuality seems to matter little.

To do this, they have hijacked the once powerful and grassroots gay lobby with large amounts of philanthropic and corporate funding, to the point these organizations have changed their names in order to be ‘inclusive’. Ordinary gays and lesbians, especially the lesbians and their concerns, have been pushed out of their organizations, even as almost every lesbian bar in the US has closed and gay loneliness is on the rise, and as both groups have no federal civil rights protections.

While transgenderism will fall over — because it must, because it cannot be sold to the general public without threats, and because ultimately, it is a corporate initiative using shady if not outright-illegal methods, it won’t happen very fast without people speaking up about it. Ultimately, my concern is for the homosexuals who have lost control of their movement and now face a group of people that believes that their gender non-conformity requires surgery, even if they are children. And if transgenderism does not fall over because of these things, it will fall over because of the lawsuits those children will make. And things like ‘Limited outcome data’ and sterilizing a child for little demonstrated medical benefit look like dollar signs to personal injury and medical malpractice lawyers.

But what this demonstrates the most is that a rich man with an ideology should have no greater voice than the ordinary citizen. We all live in nation-states: we should all contribute equally and proportionally to the pool of funds that run that state and have an equal voice on how those funds are distributed. The ability of the very rich to divert their funds into services and organizations they believe is optimal without any democratic consent is fundamentally anti-democratic, no matter how much you may agree with their aims. Had the billions poured into philanthropy gone to the state, many of these problems could have been solved. Had our nation’s political discourse been one where each voice is equal, would we have the disaffection that creates populist monsters?

As it stands, politics is a battle of oligarchs that wield their ideologies in a great war of money. Their soldiers are professional activists invested in the permanent war between either end of the political spectrum. Their cheerleaders are media outlets that report on these wars, treat them like football games, and take the claims of these organizations to be unassailable fact, it is easy for the average person to disengage and become disaffected. Ultimately, their voice and vote does not matter. This creates a situation where ideologies such as transgenderism, an ideology that is fundamentally incoherent and experimenting on children can be accepted on the left. A situation where the punishment for not going along with the party line is a violently enforced exile.

The influence these large foundations and their funders have on our politics cannot be underestimated, and it needs to be questioned. The transgender civil rights movement consists of (i) large numbers of astroturf organizations funded by billionaires with financial interest in its success, (ii) medical professionals who stand to gain from ‘selling’ transgenderism to the public (and who are happy to lie to the public about their treatments) and (iii) pharmaceutical companies that appear to be engaging in illegal off-label marketing with said medical professionals. The question of what came first-the foundations, the pharmaceutical companies, or the medical professionals -is like asking whether the chicken or the egg came first. But the fact of the matter is, all three groups stand to benefit from the transgender civil rights movement. No transgender person does. With no unbiased research, they cannot get the answers they need to treat their condition effectively. They are left stranded and marooned, with an entire movement dedicated to foisting drugs upon them, instead of finding an actual cure or treatment for gender dysphoria. When ‘transition’ is complete and they are left a castrated eunuch, with no more steps up the Bridge To Total Freedom, their suicidality does not decrease. With an incomplete path to salvation, they are told they can chase after something they can never realize. They are obliterated as a distinct legal class of people by self-identification legislation — the legal ramifications of which could set trans rights back years, which has been raised by gender critical trans activists such as Miranda Yardley.

The modern transgender movement is an astroturf tiger. It is not grassroots, it is not organic, and it serves the purposes of no one beyond homophobes and pharmaceutical companies. It is a menace, it has hollowed out the LGBT community, it threatens women’s legal gains for the past hundred years, and it is going to destroy people’s lives. An entire generation of gender non-conforming children that may have otherwise grown up gay are going to grow up to be brain damaged, weakened eunuchs with a medical malpractice lawyer on retainer. This ‘movement’ needs to end before that happens. The LGBT community needs to wake up and start talking back to the fox in the hen house.”

The Future Of 3-D Metal Printing

Netflix’s ‘The Great Hack’ Misses The Big Picture

“Who has seen an ad that has convinced you that your microphone is listening to your conversations?” David Carroll asks his students at the beginning of The Great Hack, Netflix’s new documentary about data privacy and online disinformation. Carroll chuckles nervously as almost every hand in the classroom shoots up.

The response is unsettling, but maybe not so surprising—a fitting introduction to a story about Cambridge Analytica, the now-infamous firm that provided the Trump campaign with ad-targeting data during the 2016 election. The company, as we now know, scraped Facebook quiz data to construct millions of psychographic profiles, which it then used to hyper-target voters with custom-made campaign ads. As whistleblower Christopher Wylie succinctly puts it later in the film, Cambridge Analytica isn’t a data science firm, but a “full-service propaganda machine.”

But while The Great Hack’s narrative about privacy and information warfare will be eye-opening to many, it largely fails to illustrate the bigger picture. The real “great hack” isn’t Cambridge’s ill-gotten data or Facebook’s failure to protect it. It’s the entire business model of Silicon Valley, which has incentivized the use of personal data to manipulate human behavior on a massive scale.

A few years before anyone had heard the name Cambridge Analytica, former Harvard Business School professor Shoshana Zuboff coined a term for this phenomenon: Surveillance Capitalism. As she defines it, Surveillance Capitalism is an economic “logic of accumulation” that involves extracting personal data in often-unrecognizable ways, creating “new markets for behavioral prediction, modification, and control” that exploit this data as its primary resource.

In other words, it’s the entire M.O. of companies like Facebook and Google, which depend on users providing a constant stream of photos, likes, and other useful data that can be used to map relationships, measure emotional responses, and yes, serve ads. And when it comes to ads, the holy grail of advertising is having the ability to predict peoples’ behavior—and thus, manipulate it.

Consider this quote from Zuboff’s 2015 paper, which is attributed to an anonymous data scientist at an unnamed Silicon Valley company:

“The goal of everything we do is to change people’s actual behavior at scale. When people use our app, we can capture their behaviors, identify good and bad behaviors, and develop ways to reward the good and punish the bad. We can test how actionable our cues are for them and how profitable for us.”

As a writer and educator who has covered privacy for over a decade, I consider this quote the perfect summation of the Silicon Valley mindset. It’s my go-to reference when someone tells me that they’re creeped out by government surveillance, but totally fine with corporations like Amazon and Facebook collecting their data. Nefarious government programs like face recognition and predictive policing don’t just come out of the ether. They are an inevitable consequence of a system that incentivizes the endless accumulation of data for profit, which in turn fuels the machinery of government surveillance that is frequently wielded against immigrants, activists, and other marginalized groups.

When Cambridge Analytica came under the media spotlight, I hoped that maybe it would start a conversation about the surveillance industrial complex and the underlying capitalist structures that drive it. But The Great Hack focuses most of its running time on dissecting the symptoms: Specifically, how a company came to possess the terrifying power to sway elections, and how Facebook failed to stop it.

In one sequence, Brittany Kaiser, a dubiously-motivated former Cambridge executive and one of the film’s main subjects, explains how the company’s propaganda machine worked. It would first target “persuadables,” people whose psychographic profiles suggested they were open to suggestion. Once their specific triggers were identified, content was tailor-made to target their deepest fears and insecurities. “We bombarded them with ads,” Kaiser says in a voice-over, “until they saw the world the way we wanted them to. Until they voted for our candidate.”

The Great Hack / Netflix

Naturally, the film’s main antagonist is Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix. He’s an undeniably sketchy dude, and the film shows him giving statements that are later contradicted by Kaiser and others, dodging media questions, and caught on hidden camera bragging about his conquests—including offering to use sex workers to entrap and discredit political opponents. We watch him squirm in hearings before the UK Parliament, where he is grilled about how his company’s manipulations scored victories for both the Trump campaign and the far-right Brexiteers, who first set in motion the U.K.’s tortuous departure from the European Union.

We then see brief clips of members of Congress tsk-tsk’ing Mark Zuckerberg about Facebook’s failure to prevent the whole debacle—to which Zuckerberg offers his standard, now-meaningless lines about being “very sorry” and promising to “do better.” But unlike Nix, the film seems to assume some amount of good faith in Zuckerberg, and in the tech industry as a whole.

In one scene toward the end of the film, Guardian journalist Carole Cadwalladr, who reported heavily on the Cambridge Analytica story, takes to the TED stage to confront Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and other tech leaders. Addressing “the gods of Silicon Valley,” she pleads with them to consider the harm they’ve done, and change their ways for the sake of democracy.

“This technology that you have invented has been amazing, but now it’s a crime scene, and you have the evidence,” says Cadwalladr. “And it’s not enough to say that you will do better in the future.”

The clip is intended as an empowering moment. We see a journalist speak truth to power and demand accountability from the tech platforms that mediate our world. But Cadwalladr doesn’t seem to consider that Silicon Valley titans like Zuckerberg—now a veteran of countless privacy scandals and subsequent apology tours—simply don’t care.

Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission hit Facebook with a $5 billion fine for a long history of privacy violations dating back to 2010. While unprecedented, the “punishment” was actually a great deal for the company, which made roughly four times that amount in revenue last quarter. When the judgement was announced, Facebook’s stock price didn’t even take a dent—it actually went up.

Even better for Facebook, the fine effectively absolved the company and its executives for nearly a decade’s worth of privacy debacles and deceptive practices—including allowing Cambridge Analytica to harvest data from 87 million people.

Surveillance Capitalism is the business model of Silicon Valley. If endless accumulation of data is the central logic of the industry, can we really expect anything to meaningfully change? Instead of asking how Facebook should be punished, shouldn’t be asking whether Facebook should exist at all?

At the conclusion of The Great Hack, it’s ironically Julian Wheatland, Cambridge Analytica’s former CEO, who touches on what should be the film’s central tragedy: that this whole disaster was hard-coded into the very system that gave birth to modern day Silicon Valley in the first place.

“There was always going to be a Cambridge Analytica,” he confesses to the camera. “It just sucks for me it was Cambridge Analytica.”

RESHOOT R: Driven by Passion

Richard Löwenstein about why releasing for Amiga almost makes sense.

What is the driving force behind someone who is developing games from an almost dead genre on a hardware platform which seems to have died about 25 years ago? Because that’s what I did! I released a horizontal scrolling shoot’ em-up called RESHOOT R on Amiga end of May 2019.

I invested roundabout 2,000 hours of a precious lifetime into developing. To understand the reasons behind this decision, let me rewind the calendar to the mid-1980s – a period where electronic gaming was, ­although in its infancy, already experiencing its first big transition. The first wave of consoles was being followed by more versatile programmable home computers, which lowered the entry-level for potential software architects massively. Everyone could now learn how to make games.

This is the time when my career in game development started. In 1985, at the age of 15, I finished developing Twinky goes ­hiking, the first of several successful ­commercial releases on the most classic of computer hardware platforms, the ­Commodore 64. Other titles like Persian Gulf Inferno followed. My career as a developer ended in 1991 when several loose contacts to magazine publishing houses strengthened and I was given the chance to become a member of the team of Amiga Joker, Germany’s leading games magazine by then.

Joining the editorial staff meant a great opportunity but also killed my game ­developer ambitions since both jobs are very time consuming, and I preferred to focus. Back then it was clear that I would not finish my most ambitious games project at that time: an elaborate shoot’ em-up for the Amiga-platform, an action game in the classic R-Type-style. It should have been a lighthouse project, a game more beautiful and faster than comparable products at the time.

RESHOOT R is designed to read map-files created with “Tiled“ and restart at the edited position immediately. That lowers turnaround times while designing and testing significantly.

A new market emerges Fast forward to the summer of 2015. When I cleared up my cellar, what emerged were several Amiga home computers I had ­retired by the end of the 90s. One of them contained the source code of my old shoot’ em-up-project, which I had buried in 1991. As fate would have it, at the same time I wrote some pieces about the flourishing market for new games releases on the ­8-bit-platform Commodore 64. Like vinyl and vintage cars, old games ­machines ­seemed to gain attention. Several indicators hinted for an emerging situation: mainly the growing number of retro related exhibitors at gamescom, and an increasing number of new games releases of professional quality not only on Commodore 64, but also on other platforms like Amstrad/Schneider CPC. My favourite vintage games platform – the Commodore Amiga – did not get its share of new releases though. That seemed strange because it used to be the most popular games platform in the very early 90s in Europe. It’s said to have sold about five million units in the EU-territory, still has loyal followers, and is very popular within the demo scene.

I assumed that it’s comparably elaborate to develop games for Amiga, so much so that a classic one man show – common constellation on ­older ­8-bit-systems – can hardly handle the job. The Amigas 16-bit-technology, though antique by modern standards, ­already ­enables quite sophisticated content. It takes trained specialists to take care of design, coding, pixels and music if the result was to be on par with the best games released in the heydays of the Amiga. Also, the Amiga was not very popular outside of ­Europe and therefore – unlike the Mega Drive – cannot confide on momentum from US- and Asia-based developers.

It felt like it was time to change that. I felt the fever for coding returning, decided to revive my old source code from 1991 and maybe develop it into the fully fleshed game I had envisioned about 25 years ago. Such a project is time consuming and not to be finished within a few hours. I ­calculated with an investment of three hours a day, four days a week, six months minimum. Such an enormous additional burden on the time account could not ­easily be ­reconciled with a regular job and a family. My approach: night shift. Get to bed at 10pm; wake myself at 2am; develop several hours undisturbed; return to bed and wake up with my family. Sounds crazy and it maybe is, but it works. But why, you may ask. The answer is simple. Passion. The implementation of a lifelong dream. I want to prove to myself that I can develop a high-quality Amiga game and maybe gain some attention and recognition. July 2015 marks the beginning of my project of heart.

RESHOOT R runs on the classic Amiga-models A1200, A4000 and CD32, as well as compatible emulators and recent Amiga-clones like Vampire V4.

Retro platform, modern tools Very quickly I realised that Amiga development no longer works like in 1991 for me. In recent years I managed a couple of ­iPhone developments and learned how to use modern software tools such as Xcode and Unity on Apple Mac. The Amiga can’t handle common features, like multiple monitor setup or version control. Therefore it was clear that I had to setup a cross-development system. My main tools:

iMac. The built-in Internet connection has to be mentioned, because in 1991 this was not yet available. Gathering and sharing information is so much simpler today!

Xcode. Mainly works a comfortable code editor with version control, code completion and text highlighting; features not yet invented in 1991

FS-UAE Amiga Emulator. Almost 100 percent compatible to the real hardware. Extraordinary built-in debugging capabilities

ASM Pro. Classic tool running on Amiga. Translates source code into pure and fast machine language. Switched to VASM-cross-development tool recently

Tiled: A very common map editor for all kinds of 2D-games. Allows comfortable placement of tiles and objects in separate layers. Code on Amiga read and interprets Tiles’ XML-data-exports for use in RESHOOT

Commodore Amiga 1200. Real retro hardware used to test code regularly. File transfer between iMac and Amiga works with SD card which both systems can read and write

Another integral part of the development environment is a virtual hard drive partition, which the iMac and Amiga both can access to share source code and data files. Some few self-written keyboard macros automate the interaction of Xcode on the Mac and the tools on the Amiga emulator. One press of the F1-key stores source code, activates FS-UAE, loads source code into ASM Pro, compiles and executes. This takes about one second. On the real retro hardware this would take approximately 30 seconds. Turnaround times of 1991 and 2019 cannot be compared.

After establishing a working development environment, it took me some time to get back into thinking in Assembler ­language. To me, Assembler is still the ­purest form of coding because of it’s logical approach and direct access to the hardware. It’s fast, too. Much faster than anything if one knows how to handle it. The price for speed: Compared to C++ or C#, Assembler code looks rather abstract and unreadable, because it mainly consists of commands which provide memory access, logical operators and branches to control program flow. I should add that a dedicated game development environment comparable to Unity actually exists on Amiga, albeit much simpler. Also, like today’s ­modern operating systems, the Amiga OS provides libraries which handle visual, aural and input/output operations. But on classic hardware, processor cycles and memory are very precious. The ­Amiga libraries slow code down considerably, game development environments alike. Almost no reasonable games on the Amiga makes use of such features.

For my game it was ine­vitable to draw and move pixels as fast and memory-efficient as possible. I, therefore, did what most Amiga coders did in the heydays of the machine: switch off the OS and write custom code which fits the game like a glove. That’s what you need to do, if you want maximum performance on a 14 MHz machine with 2 MB of memory. These are the specs of the Amiga 1200, which is my favourite iteration of the Amiga-family and therefore became my target platform. I love this machine because of its elegant case containing considerably more processing power than the earlier Amiga models 500, 1000 and 2000. It was released just a few years prior to Commodore demise and therefore – like its console-cousin CD32 – did not manage to gain the same market share as the Amiga 500. Because of their versatility, the ­Amiga 1200, 4000 and CD32 seem to be on the rise now though. Prices for used models currently go through the roof.

The 2019 release RESHOOT R shows its creators have learned their lesson. It sets its focus on smooth gameplay with just some minor modern modifications. This resulted in very favourable reviews from Youtubers and the specialist press.

Don’t innovate too much At this stage, it occurred to me that – while I grew back into the code – I could ­modernise the game design. Why not incorporate new elements not seen before on Amiga? One idea was to add twitch gameplay with an endless structure. I imagined a kind of endless reaction test, fast and fluid as the Amiga classic Silkworm, mixed with ­elements of Japanese bullet-hell-shooters. The player’s survival would not be divided into many short chapters. Instead, there should be only one level and even a ­single life. Once the player’s spaceship hits an invader or a bullet: Game Over, score billing and new attempt. Just like Flappy Bird. That would be an interesting new alternative to Apydia, R-Type, Thunderforce IV, Last ­Resort and other classic horizontal shooters from the 80s and 90s that I found so intense and exciting.

It took me one year to finish ­developing RESHOOT – a game which I had started to work in the early 90s and which got its release in August 2016. It was not the high-quality shoot’ em-up I had in my brain at first. But it was proof that I can finish such a project. That seemed sufficient, especially as so many comparable projects fail to reach the finish line. RESHOOT was released physically on CD-ROM, simply because I wanted to feel the satisfaction of being able to touch the fruits of my labour with my hands. Within one year of development I learned a lot. So much so that, even before sending the ISO-image to the ­CD-ROM duplication facility, I started to work on a follow-up project. This was going to be the lighthouse project I had originally envisioned. I already had given birth to its name: RESHOOT R. The intention of the “R “mainly was to ignite discussions within the community about its meaning. I decided to invite the community to become involved in the development. Let people join the process, that means a serious investment of time and energy, but it’s important to gain attention. Also, this way I gathered feedback from RESHOOT-beta-testers very early and therefore knew I’d better change the game design for RESHOOT R fundamentally.

With RESHOOT, the intention was to use the basic shoot ‘em formula as a frame for mainly modern game design elements. This worked only partially. The endless gameplay got no love from the retro community. Therefore RESHOOT R got a total redesign. I planned it as a classic horizontal shoot’ em-up with a just handful of modern details, and focus on visual effects never seen before Amiga. The plan: classic stage-based structure with rising difficulty level, power-up-weapons, lots of change of pace, and narrative elements leading to a dramatic climax.

The 2016 release Reshoot tried to marry classic shoot’ em-up gameplay with modern elements. It rather failed. Customers seem to prefer old-school elements in games on retro platforms.

No more one-man-show Collaboration with pixel artist Kevin Saunders from Australia was a given. He did great work on RESHOOT and proved that he is a reliable guy. This is not to be taken for granted in a development scenario which is mainly driven by passion, not money. One of the main challenges while developing RESHOOT and RESHOOT R was to find and lead people who can actually pull through, who do not flake away after a couple of weeks or at the slightest sight of any obstacles. Kevin and I discussed visual ideas and quickly decided to ditch the very abstract and clean design of RESHOOT and instead go for a comparably natural ­approach, combining the fluid animation of 3D-rendered objects with the distinctive look of hand-crafted pixels.

The simultaneous use of music and sound-fx was inevitable. One needs to know that it was not common practice in the Amigas early years and is still difficult to implement nowadays since the Amiga only has four sound channels and can mix sounds only with severe constraints in the visual and gameplay department. But our ears are so used to a modern hearing experience, that anything less would not sound acceptable in 2019. To keep the music pumping while player projectile whoosh over the screen and the boss warcries after taking another hit, took weeks of detailed work.

Also, the switch to a different kind of music proved to be very important for the enhanced experience that RESHOOT R provides. I ditched the unconventional chiptune-music of RESHOOT for a ­modern, fast pulsed musical accompaniment of very high technical quality, comparable to what you would expect to hear on modern hardware platforms. A quarter of system memory was reserved just for audio use. This way the digital samples, which the Amigas Paula-customchip reads from memory and outputs through its four ­audio channels, would sound natural and not scratchy like is so often the case in Amiga games.

While talking about music, I need to mention gamescom 2016 and the importance of attending such gatherings. It was this visit that laid the groundwork for the audio experience. While showing RESHOOT to the public audience, I got into talks with Martin Ahman. Martin is a DJ and composer interested in electronic music. He told me how keen he is to, once in a lifetime, have one of his pieces in an Amiga game. He did not have any Amiga related releases on its curriculum vitae at that time. But he convinced me that he knows what it takes by sending a piece which was pretty close to what I had envisioned. It all resulted in audio tracks which not only drove the gameplay forward but which were so good on their own that prior to release, we decided to produce a separate Soundtrack-CD with remixes from the German Remix Group and others. Like Kevin Saunders, Martin Ahman is aware of the limitations of classic hardware and creative enough to work around them for the best possible performance.

The challenge is to create a 3D-illusion through visual layering and move dozens of objects at the same time, with only a 14-Mhz-CPU and 2 MB RAM under the hood.

Three years in the making It took me a while to enhance and modify the existing RESHOOT-Engine to cope with the many additional elements planned for RESHOOT R: I wanted narrative breaks, a diversified and sometimes surprising ­attack choreography, and parent-children-related objects which can be multiplied and combined to form bigger boss-like objects. One of my main goals was to add full screen perspective scrolling to enhance the illusion of visual depth. This has never been done in Amiga game before. The Amiga does not contain any 3D-capabilities, no scaling or texture mapping. Only a very simple GPU called “Copper“ can switch video characteristics at segments of each scan line. Therefore all perspective visual effects need clever coding since they must only use a minimum of CPU cycles while adding a maximum of visual impact to the experience. Doing this while drawing up to 100 moving objects on screen and keeping a steady 50 Hertz framerate proofed to be a very special challenge. Even down to optimising single bytes within data structures and counting CPU cycles for maximised performance within program loops.

One year after the initial development started, the engine was ready for its public debut at gamescom 2017. I showed one playable level and gathered a ton of feedback and ideas. It took another two years to implement the best proposals. One of the most important modifications concerns the collision system. It now mirrors the hitbox-based behaviour found in modern shoot’ em-up-games on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch. The added particle system not only looks nice, but it also helps distinguish cosmetic background graphics from collidable stuff. The extra weapon system now not only rewards persevering ­players, who remember and collect power-ups, with ­enhanced destruction ­capabilities; but it also incorporates an ­innovative shield ­function for the players ship: The hit of an enemy bullet only takes away one ­power-up, unless the ship returns to its ­basic configuration and a bullet hit is fatal. All these modifications add tremendously to the game-flow and playability ­experience.

Community and media seem to agree. Favourable comments from Youtubers, ­excited reviews in specialist magazines and a number of editorial pieces – one of which was aired on the German public TV-channel ZDF – prove that RESHOOT R is not only a great Amiga game – it’s a great game on any platform. So it paid off emotionally. But did it work financially?

The Retro community is very creative, loyal and willing to buy games at prices comparable to modern console releases. The market is still very, very niche, though. This restricts sales but increases the visibility of each games release, provided its creators invest sufficient time and knowledge into community work and marketing. RESHOOT R is essentially a bet on the assumption that the retro games community grows like the vintage car scene did in the past 20 years. If this becomes true, the market might become serious in the near future. Games like RESHOOT R help create such a market. Because if they are good-looking and entertaining, they may be considered a viable alternative to products on modern platforms – not only for people who actually owned an Amiga 30 years ago but also for new customers wanting to experience this special retro flavour in the most authentic way. Future projects like Intellivisions Amico-console help putting the market into the limelight.

RESHOOT R is a retro community effort, with contributions from several experienced freelance artists.

So, my newly founded retro specialist label “spieleschreiber” has a serious foot in the door and the business model is well and truly scalable. Conversions of RESHOOT R for Steam, Switch and Mega Drive-platforms are on the cards. The next AAA-release for Amiga is already in ­development: The fast-paced vertical shoot’ em-up RESHOOT PROXIMA III will bring Truxton-like space chaos onto Amiga. The game debuted at the Amiga34-­exhibition at the 12th October 2019 and will be released in 2020. Extrapolating from peoples interest at the show, this will be huge. Maybe it will even be the first Amiga game ever that gets successfully funded by a Kickstarter-­campaign. Tanglewood, Phantom Gear and several other recent projects for the Mega Drive-platform have proven it can be done.

Chain reaction: West Brom star and Sports Ledger founder Hal Robson-Kanu on blockchain’s sporting potential

People always oppose change,” Thomas Robson-Kanu points out as he discusses the merits of cryptocurrency and the technological advancements made plausible by the invention and development of blockchain.

Thomas by birth, Hal by virtue of popular culture, Robson-Kanu is a name now steeped in Welsh sporting folklore. Having scored one of Wales’ most famous goals en route to the Uefa Euro 2016 semi-finals, the winger now plies his trade for Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion, while away from the pitch the 29-year-old’s focus is on taking the curious enigma of blockchain into the mainstream.

It is a sphere that has fascinated Robson-Kanu since reading the original bitcoin white paper in 2008, and it is the same fascination that has informed the concept behind Sports Ledger, the multilayer blockchain-centric company he co-founded in 2017.

He is tackling the venture head-on, commuting almost daily from his club’s training complex in the West Midlands to the company’s office in Chiswick, west London. It is, he explains, an endeavour that requires his full attention, particularly given he is launching Sports Ledger amid a backdrop of scepticism, not only as a professional athlete, but with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the deeply complex world of distributed ledger technology.

“You look at when the industrial revolution came about and the opposition to that,” he says of a societal trepidation surrounding technological progression. “We look back at the first stages of the internet – there was opposition to that; we look at the first stages of electricity – a lot of people were saying that electricity would burn your house down.

“That was the narrative. It wasn’t talking about the potential values of it and the way in which we now use it.”

The same mainstream disquiet is attached to blockchain. Robson-Kanu, however, is in no doubt as to its potential; Sports Ledger carries an ambitious strap line – ‘The Future of Sports’.

Robson-Kanu scored a memorable goal in Wales’ 3-1 win over Belgium at Euro 2016.

Its advantages, he implores, are undeniable: an ownership of personal data amid a proverbial fightback against today’s social media giants; an ability to profit from content creation; a means of cost-cutting; a place to engage more closely and deeply with a fanbase; a platform to secure, access and share biometric data; even the chance to use statistics to scout undiscovered talent. The list is endless.

Its biggest challenge, he acknowledges, is in convincing the masses to buy into a concept whose finer digital minutiae require a significant level of expertise. Yet, as Robson-Kanu highlights, there are few who comprehend the inner workings of our modern-day staples.

“To actually understand the full function and full potential of all the infrastructure behind blockchain is going to take people a long time to do,” he acknowledges. “But nobody truly understands how the internet works.

“They know it works, but what they also know is that they just use it and they use it because applications and use cases have been built on top of the internet – whether that’s a Google search engine or whether that’s a video call on Apple.”

Where the internet differs from blockchain, though, is in its core function. The development of the technology since bitcoin first appeared in 2008 means that a centralised model can now be built, where not only information, but value can be exchanged.

As the former Reading midfielder puts it: “The internet is the internet of information; blockchain is the internet of value. Fundamentally, the adoption of blockchain will occur through use case.

“With what we are building at Sports Ledger, you are simply going to use it as an application. It’s not a case of needing to understand the concept of blockchain to use it – you don’t.”

In a changing society, the notion of focusing on blockchain’s benefits rather than its technological intricacies marks a crucial modification of attitude. Indeed, it is an ever-growing market – according to a Research and Markets report, the blockchain industry is set to be worth US$7.59 billion by 2024.

The internet is the internet of information; blockchain is the internet of value.

As Robson-Kanu says: “People are beginning to understand the fundamental values of blockchain and how it will enhance every single person’s life – whether that’s from recording land registry records on blockchain or recording health records, executing purchases of a house, which would normally take six to eight weeks but could occur instantaneously and fully verified and completely transparent.

“The adoption of blockchain will happen at a faster rate than the adoption of the internet. This is simply because, if you track technological innovation and revolution, we are on this upward trend in terms of our actual technological innovation as a human society and a human race. It is not going to take as long as the internet – it’s going to happen a lot quicker.”

It is a timeline corroborated by Omar Jackson, the director of Cryptech, a Berkeley Assets-owned blockchain technology business. He argues that the sports industry has little choice but to embrace the benefits of the technology.

“All major top-flight football clubs and top sporting institutions will all be adopting some form of blockchain technology within the next 24 months,” he predicts. “Clubs have so much data that they have to hold on their system at any one time. The most secure way of holding that now is through blockchain.

“It’s harder to hack, it’s more efficient and there’s far less paperwork. It allows clubs to massively cut costs and save money on overheads. Where there was paper and individuals needed for the movement of paperwork from one party to another, that won’t be required because it will all be on a digital ledger.”

In short, a primary consequence is that blockchain could see the death of the intermediary – both digitally and, perhaps, physically. In an article for the Harvard Business Review, professors Marco Iansiti and Karim Lakhani describe the technology as ‘an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way.’

For Robson-Kanu, the key term is ‘peer-to-peer’ – it encapsulates the fundamental selling point of blockchain. He uses the example of smart contracts to illustrate how the technology rids a transaction of the need for a third party to create a direct chain, which documents the full extent of any transactional deal. “If you were to do X and I was to do Y, you would receive Z,” he says.

Blockchain’s intercessor-free smart contract also brings greater transparency, with the technology’s major feature being its ability to document the exact path of any transaction, which has obvious implications for player transfers, salaries, third-party ownership, and other often opaque dealings.

“The ability to transfer a player from one club to another will be done far more quickly, far more securely and far more efficiently than has been done before,” suggests Jackson. “We’re talking about the transfer of paperwork because it’s a peer-to-peer system. You will have all the player’s details, all the information and data held on a blockchain. And that can be transferred from club A to club B so that club B owns the rights to that data and, therefore, the player.”

A further, perhaps under-appreciated benefit of blockchain’s potential to alter the transfer market is its speed. Jackson raises the recent case of David de Gea, the Manchester United goalkeeper whose proposed move to Real Madrid was reportedly scuppered at the last moment by a slow fax machine.

Omar Jackson explains that blockchain has the potential to make monetary transactions instantaneous, allowing sport to avoid the type of delay that reprotedly saw David de Gea’s proposed move from Manchester United to Real Madrid fall through.

The technology of the ledger on which the transfer’s data could be held would prevent such an issue. “If blockchain was utilised at that time, [the transfer] would have been instant,” the Cryptech director explains. “It would have been done within two or three seconds. It can make a major difference.”

As far as Robson-Kanu is concerned, opening up the at-times mysterious complexities of the sports industry is fundamental to the future relationship between club and fan. “We are not coming in to disrupt and tear up the industry,” he stresses, pointing out the difference between evolution and revolution. “What we are actually saying is let’s look at sport and what actually contributes the most to sports – the fans.

“Fans have a right to understand and see transparently what they are paying for and the people who they are paying to see and what they are doing on a day-to-day basis, or what they do during a game on a detailed level.

“Rather than being an opinion-based industry, it would move to an information-based industry and alongside that, a transparent information-based industry, which is a massive catalyst in terms of what blockchain can do.”

Opening the sports industry up to its supporters is one of Sports Ledger’s many ambitions, all of which delve well beyond the mere benefit of the additional security provided by blockchain’s virtually unhackable cryptographic transactions.

Sports Ledger’s own white paper projects myriad applications for the technology, including a social platform for fans, athletes and clubs to share content. On that platform, cryptocurrency – in this case, Sports Ledger’s SPSL token – would act as the key to unlock and purchase the right to view other users’ content.

The use of digital tokens in the sporting sphere has already begun in earnest, with the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) partnering with Hashletes and Player Tokens respectively. Both companies rely on the purchase of digital tokens in order to obtain bespoke ‘cryptogoods’, such as digital player trading cards. MLB Crypto – built on the Ethereum blockchain – sold US$500,000 worth of ‘cryptogoods’ within its first two months of existence.

Another company operating in the space is French crypto firm Sorare, which recently signed the world’s first soccer league-wide blockchain collectible deal with Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League. The deal came just 12 weeks after the business’ launch – firm proof of a burgeoning collectibles market that, according to Forbes, is now worth US$370 billion.

“We really want to bring crypto to mainstream Europe,” explains Nicolas Julia, Sorare’s founder. “Everything we do can be used by mainstream customers. You don’t need to own any cryptocurrency, you don’t need to understand blockchain. Everything that you see on our platform is designed to try and replicate the normal experience that you would have on Amazon or on Ebay.

“There are no competitors in the world who let their customers pay with both normal currencies and cryptocurrencies. It is something that we offer – that people can enter our platform through their credit card and can get out of it a crypto reward.”

Sorare’s deal with the Jupiler Pro League was the first of its kind between a professional scocer league and a crypto-based company.

Sorare’s concept is auction-based, with fans able to bid to win digital player cards, which can then be used in a worldwide fantasy game, competing with other users whose player cards relate to a range of global leagues. “It is tied to the real world,” says Julia. “We want to bridge the digital world and the natural world. Every week you get ranked in the leaderboard and you can win a reward.”

It is a modern extension of the Panini sticker craze, he adds. Whereas traditional stickers and even digital cards are replicable, the technology behind blockchain means that each collectible is unique and impossible to duplicate.

The use potential of tokens, however, goes further, with the concept playing a key role in the sports-focused social platform that is at the heart of Robson-Kanu’s plans. In the Sports Ledger platform, fans control their own personal data, which represents a key departure from the model employed by the major social networks.

“If we take Facebook as a model,” he explains, “the way they monetise their whole business model is through selling that digital identity of its users to a third party who have the intention of monetising that user’s profile or selling a product to that user’s profile.”

With every search, an individual’s digital footprint grows, with the social platform selling on the enriched user identity to advertisers and third parties. As Robson-Kanu elucidates, blockchain has the power to turn ownership of that data over to the user, which in turn could lead to monetary gain.

“We want users to share social content but also to own the digital identity through which they are creating that social sharing content and those behavioural analytics,” he explains. “As a user, they will then have control and then they might say: ‘Well, actually, I would like to keep my digital identity private.’ But at the same time, it will allow for those who say: ‘I don’t mind being communicated to.’

“What that would essentially allow for is external corporations and advertising companies who have a vested interest in you as a target market to come into the application and rather than pay the likes of Facebook or Instagram for access to your digital identity to communicate with you, they can now – peer-to-peer – make that communication with you.

“They can say to you: ‘Can I view your digital identity?’ And in return, rather than give your value to a third party corporation, they give the value to the user. That’s the whole model.”

The logic behind the concept is both sound and overdue, with the general population beginning to understand how social platforms work. “I think five years ago, people didn’t understand why these social sharing content platforms were valued so much,” Robson-Kanu suggests. “I think now, users are beginning to understand that actually they are the ones being monetised.

“That data should be held by the rightful owner and that owner should have the opportunity and the right to monetise it.”

When Robson-Kanu discusses data, he does so with greater ambition than simply benefiting consumers; he also wants to aid his fellow athletes. Currently, his own biometric and physical performance data is stored in a centralised system in what he describes as a “cumbersome legacy manner” – an inconvenient and outdated mechanism that verges on inaccessible.

Even to view his personal figures, he has to request access. Once in possession of his numbers, they remain of little use due to a lack of any technological interpretation tool. The data on its own is useless, with no apparatus to compare, say, this season with the previous year.

Sports Ledger plans to change that by creating a platform through which athletes can analyse, understand and compare their own statistics. “It will be adopted by showing the values within the application to professional athletes and to clubs,” says Robson-Kanu. “We have spoken with a number of clubs already, and the appetite and the interest for that is there.

That data should be held by the rightful owner and that owner should have the opportunity and the right to monetise it.

“Part of our market research was about interviewing key individuals within the sports space and seeing where they felt there was currently a lack of value or value being lost because of a lack of technological innovation. We are very aware that the sports space is hungry for this type of platform.”

An extension of creating a decentralised platform on which to store personal data is the production of a biometric passport, as well as the capacity to compare athlete performance. It is a technological step that Robson-Kanu believes could help unearth a new generation of athletes in parts of the world that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Using wearable technology, young athletes in underprivileged regions worldwide will be given the opportunity to produce their own biometric data, which can then be automatically inputted onto the platform and accessed by scouts and club analysts. The tech will be supplied by Sports Ledger’s charitable arm, whose aim is to use blockchain to open up opportunities in the sports industry globally.

“All they need is a smart device and a GPRS signal to upload their data into a profile which they own,” explains Robson-Kanu. “The exciting thing here is that if the kid wears this for six months, he has then created an enriched digital performance passport.”

It is a long-term plan, but one that highlights blockchain’s potential to revolutionise the industry. And making a difference in the mainstream is certainly the zenith for Robson-Kanu. As the Welshman says, blockchain’s arrival is about evolution rather than revolution. But it’s coming and it’s here to stay.

“With what we are building at Sports Ledger, you are simply going to use it as an application. It’s not a case of needing to understand the concept of blockchain to use it – you don’t.”

In a changing society, the notion of focusing on blockchain’s benefits rather than its technological intricacies marks a crucial modification of attitude. Indeed, it is an ever-growing market – according to a Research and Markets report, the blockchain industry is set to be worth US$7.59 billion by 2024.

The internet is the internet of information; blockchain is the internet of value.

As Robson-Kanu says: “People are beginning to understand the fundamental values of blockchain and how it will enhance every single person’s life – whether that’s from recording land registry records on blockchain or recording health records, executing purchases of a house, which would normally take six to eight weeks but could occur instantaneously and fully verified and completely transparent.

“The adoption of blockchain will happen at a faster rate than the adoption of the internet. This is simply because, if you track technological innovation and revolution, we are on this upward trend in terms of our actual technological innovation as a human society and a human race. It is not going to take as long as the internet – it’s going to happen a lot quicker.”

It is a timeline corroborated by Omar Jackson, the director of Cryptech, a Berkeley Assets-owned blockchain technology business. He argues that the sports industry has little choice but to embrace the benefits of the technology.

“All major top-flight football clubs and top sporting institutions will all be adopting some form of blockchain technology within the next 24 months,” he predicts. “Clubs have so much data that they have to hold on their system at any one time. The most secure way of holding that now is through blockchain.

“It’s harder to hack, it’s more efficient and there’s far less paperwork. It allows clubs to massively cut costs and save money on overheads. Where there was paper and individuals needed for the movement of paperwork from one party to another, that won’t be required because it will all be on a digital ledger.”

In short, a primary consequence is that blockchain could see the death of the intermediary – both digitally and, perhaps, physically. In an article for the Harvard Business Review, professors Marco Iansiti and Karim Lakhani describe the technology as ‘an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way.’

For Robson-Kanu, the key term is ‘peer-to-peer’ – it encapsulates the fundamental selling point of blockchain. He uses the example of smart contracts to illustrate how the technology rids a transaction of the need for a third party to create a direct chain, which documents the full extent of any transactional deal. “If you were to do X and I was to do Y, you would receive Z,” he says.

Blockchain’s intercessor-free smart contract also brings greater transparency, with the technology’s major feature being its ability to document the exact path of any transaction, which has obvious implications for player transfers, salaries, third-party ownership, and other often opaque dealings.

“The ability to transfer a player from one club to another will be done far more quickly, far more securely and far more efficiently than has been done before,” suggests Jackson. “We’re talking about the transfer of paperwork because it’s a peer-to-peer system. You will have all the player’s details, all the information and data held on a blockchain. And that can be transferred from club A to club B so that club B owns the rights to that data and, therefore, the player.”

A further, perhaps under-appreciated benefit of blockchain’s potential to alter the transfer market is its speed. Jackson raises the recent case of David de Gea, the Manchester United goalkeeper whose proposed move to Real Madrid was reportedly scuppered at the last moment by a slow fax machine.

The technology of the ledger on which the transfer’s data could be held would prevent such an issue. “If blockchain was utilised at that time, [the transfer] would have been instant,” the Cryptech director explains. “It would have been done within two or three seconds. It can make a major difference.”

As far as Robson-Kanu is concerned, opening up the at-times mysterious complexities of the sports industry is fundamental to the future relationship between club and fan. “We are not coming in to disrupt and tear up the industry,” he stresses, pointing out the difference between evolution and revolution. “What we are actually saying is let’s look at sport and what actually contributes the most to sports – the fans.

“Fans have a right to understand and see transparently what they are paying for and the people who they are paying to see and what they are doing on a day-to-day basis, or what they do during a game on a detailed level.

“Rather than being an opinion-based industry, it would move to an information-based industry and alongside that, a transparent information-based industry, which is a massive catalyst in terms of what blockchain can do.”

Opening the sports industry up to its supporters is one of Sports Ledger’s many ambitions, all of which delve well beyond the mere benefit of the additional security provided by blockchain’s virtually unhackable cryptographic transactions.

Sports Ledger’s own white paper projects myriad applications for the technology, including a social platform for fans, athletes and clubs to share content. On that platform, cryptocurrency – in this case, Sports Ledger’s SPSL token – would act as the key to unlock and purchase the right to view other users’ content.

The use of digital tokens in the sporting sphere has already begun in earnest, with the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) partnering with Hashletes and Player Tokens respectively. Both companies rely on the purchase of digital tokens in order to obtain bespoke ‘cryptogoods’, such as digital player trading cards. MLB Crypto – built on the Ethereum blockchain – sold US$500,000 worth of ‘cryptogoods’ within its first two months of existence.

Another company operating in the space is French crypto firm Sorare, which recently signed the world’s first soccer league-wide blockchain collectible deal with Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League. The deal came just 12 weeks after the business’ launch – firm proof of a burgeoning collectibles market that, according to Forbes, is now worth US$370 billion.

“We really want to bring crypto to mainstream Europe,” explains Nicolas Julia, Sorare’s founder. “Everything we do can be used by mainstream customers. You don’t need to own any cryptocurrency, you don’t need to understand blockchain. Everything that you see on our platform is designed to try and replicate the normal experience that you would have on Amazon or on Ebay.

“There are no competitors in the world who let their customers pay with both normal currencies and cryptocurrencies. It is something that we offer – that people can enter our platform through their credit card and can get out of it a crypto reward.”

Sorare’s deal with the Jupiler Pro League was the first of its kind between a professional scocer league and a crypto-based company.

Sorare’s concept is auction-based, with fans able to bid to win digital player cards, which can then be used in a worldwide fantasy game, competing with other users whose player cards relate to a range of global leagues. “It is tied to the real world,” says Julia. “We want to bridge the digital world and the natural world. Every week you get ranked in the leaderboard and you can win a reward.”

It is a modern extension of the Panini sticker craze, he adds. Whereas traditional stickers and even digital cards are replicable, the technology behind blockchain means that each collectible is unique and impossible to duplicate.

The use potential of tokens, however, goes further, with the concept playing a key role in the sports-focused social platform that is at the heart of Robson-Kanu’s plans. In the Sports Ledger platform, fans control their own personal data, which represents a key departure from the model employed by the major social networks.

“If we take Facebook as a model,” he explains, “the way they monetise their whole business model is through selling that digital identity of its users to a third party who have the intention of monetising that user’s profile or selling a product to that user’s profile.”

With every search, an individual’s digital footprint grows, with the social platform selling on the enriched user identity to advertisers and third parties. As Robson-Kanu elucidates, blockchain has the power to turn ownership of that data over to the user, which in turn could lead to monetary gain.

“We want users to share social content but also to own the digital identity through which they are creating that social sharing content and those behavioural analytics,” he explains. “As a user, they will then have control and then they might say: ‘Well, actually, I would like to keep my digital identity private.’ But at the same time, it will allow for those who say: ‘I don’t mind being communicated to.’

“What that would essentially allow for is external corporations and advertising companies who have a vested interest in you as a target market to come into the application and rather than pay the likes of Facebook or Instagram for access to your digital identity to communicate with you, they can now – peer-to-peer – make that communication with you.

“They can say to you: ‘Can I view your digital identity?’ And in return, rather than give your value to a third party corporation, they give the value to the user. That’s the whole model.”

The logic behind the concept is both sound and overdue, with the general population beginning to understand how social platforms work. “I think five years ago, people didn’t understand why these social sharing content platforms were valued so much,” Robson-Kanu suggests. “I think now, users are beginning to understand that actually they are the ones being monetised.

“That data should be held by the rightful owner and that owner should have the opportunity and the right to monetise it.”

When Robson-Kanu discusses data, he does so with greater ambition than simply benefiting consumers; he also wants to aid his fellow athletes. Currently, his own biometric and physical performance data is stored in a centralised system in what he describes as a “cumbersome legacy manner” – an inconvenient and outdated mechanism that verges on inaccessible.

Even to view his personal figures, he has to request access. Once in possession of his numbers, they remain of little use due to a lack of any technological interpretation tool. The data on its own is useless, with no apparatus to compare, say, this season with the previous year.

Sports Ledger plans to change that by creating a platform through which athletes can analyse, understand and compare their own statistics. “It will be adopted by showing the values within the application to professional athletes and to clubs,” says Robson-Kanu. “We have spoken with a number of clubs already, and the appetite and the interest for that is there.

That data should be held by the rightful owner and that owner should have the opportunity and the right to monetise it.

“Part of our market research was about interviewing key individuals within the sports space and seeing where they felt there was currently a lack of value or value being lost because of a lack of technological innovation. We are very aware that the sports space is hungry for this type of platform.”

An extension of creating a decentralised platform on which to store personal data is the production of a biometric passport, as well as the capacity to compare athlete performance. It is a technological step that Robson-Kanu believes could help unearth a new generation of athletes in parts of the world that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Using wearable technology, young athletes in underprivileged regions worldwide will be given the opportunity to produce their own biometric data, which can then be automatically inputted onto the platform and accessed by scouts and club analysts. The tech will be supplied by Sports Ledger’s charitable arm, whose aim is to use blockchain to open up opportunities in the sports industry globally.

“All they need is a smart device and a GPRS signal to upload their data into a profile which they own,” explains Robson-Kanu. “The exciting thing here is that if the kid wears this for six months, he has then created an enriched digital performance passport.”

It is a long-term plan, but one that highlights blockchain’s potential to revolutionise the industry. And making a difference in the mainstream is certainly the zenith for Robson-Kanu. As the Welshman says, blockchain’s arrival is about evolution rather than revolution. But it’s coming and it’s here to stay.

Innovation and Its Enemies: Why People Resist New Technologies [book], by Calestous Juma. New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2016, 432 pp.

On the one hand, the world is obviously a much better place than it used to be.

Don’t take my word for it: the past few years have seen a surge of evidence. Data visualization wizards, such as Sweden’s Hans Rosling and Oxford economist Max Roser, have used their two projects (Gapminder and Our World in Data, respectively) to graph human progress over the past several centuries, using axes measuring prosperity, health, education, female empowerment, and other metrics. Best-selling books, such as Harvard professor Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of Our Nature, detail an increasingly peaceful world. Columbia University’s Ruth DeFries’s The Big Ratchet shows how humanity is growing more food more efficiently, making food cheaper, and leaving more room for wild nature. Nearly everywhere we look we are, as Charles Kenny succinctly but memorably titled his acclaimed 2011 book, Getting Better.

On the other hand, the world is full of risks, dangers, and insecurities that humans have not previously encountered.

The challenges facing humanity today have accumulated in both magnitude and complexity. They include climate change, the loss of ecosystems and animal populations, social and economic inequality, and a historically familiar resistance to multiculturalism in many countries. Making matters worse, the public and social institutions we count on to rebuff these risks are under attack.

Those of us pleased by the general outcomes of modernity (myself included) should take a moment to consider this tension, for it represents a real challenge to continued modernization for both the rich and the poor today. Although progress has become more robust and sophisticated over the course of modern history, so too have the powers that stall, obstruct, and reject progress.

In his new book, Calestous Juma pits these two forces viscerally against each other. Fittingly titled Innovation and Its Enemies, the book charts a fascinating new history of emerging technologies and the social opposition they ignite.

Juma would be high up on the list of experts to consult about such things. He is a professor of international development at Harvard University’s Belfer Center, directing the center’s work on science, technology, and globalization. An expert in agricultural systems and technologies, Juma has long been steeped in controversies over agricultural trade policy, genetic modification, and other agriculture and biotech debates.

He begins his book with a schema for why societies might resist innovations—a representation so lengthy and complex one wonders how any new technology could overcome it. Among other obstacles, Juma highlights intuitive factors, such as disgust and defense of what’s considered “natural,” vested economic interests, socio-technical inertia, and responses, such as risk aversion, that can stem from both intellectual and psychosocial motivations. With this structure, Juma makes it easy to draw parallels between his case studies—coffee, the printing press, margarine, farm mechanization, electricity, mechanical refrigeration, recorded sound, transgenic crops, and the genetically modified AquAdvantage salmon—and the social resistance to them on display today.

Searching for a precursor to the currently ascendant backlash against outsider faces, perspectives, and cultures? Look no further than authoritarian sixteenth and seventeenth century objections to coffee, a then-novel drink that was consumed in public spaces that “served as secular forum for conversation that drew people from all social strata.”

The seemingly endless battle of words and policies between renewable energy and nuclear power advocates? Let’s flip back to the dissemination of electricity itself, which saw Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse amp up their largely technical dispute with claims over morals, identity, and public health.

Concerns over human neuro-cognitive therapies and pharmaceuticals? These clearly echo anxieties over genetically modified crops, in that both innovations violate some (or many) definitions of what’s “natural.”

These are the CliffsNotes, of course. None of these innovations faced simple or singular opposition. Indeed, one of Juma’s conclusions from his case studies is that challenges to new technologies are “ not always direct but often clothed in other concerns depending on contemporary social and political factors.” Many emotional, rational, and faux-rational forces can be marshaled to quell the rise of a strange or distasteful new technology. Sometimes these forces might even be necessary, as when an innovation stands to profit the few at the expense of the many.

How, then, might we responsibly guide and accelerate innovation against its enemies? Technological superiority appears to be a powerful, if insufficient, condition: coffee proved a better stimulant than khat in Yemen or chicory in England and Denmark; electricity ultimately proved safer, more useful, and cheaper than its predecessors kerosene and town gas; transgenic seeds really do allow more food to be grown on less land, sparing large impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity.

But social organization and social license can be decisive as well. The printing press clearly serves the purpose of spreading literature and ideas better than oral history and copying by hand, but the cultural traditions of Muslims delayed acceptance of the printed word in the Ottoman Empire for four centuries. A previously fractured and unorganized dairy lobby in the United States fortified itself to fight the arrival of margarine. Juma quotes the medievalist Lynn White, writing that “the acceptance or rejection of an invention … depends quite as much upon the conditions of society, and upon the imagination of its leaders, as upon the nature of the technological item itself.”

Advocates of a particular technology commonly condescend toward “Luddites” who resist technological change. Pro-nuclear figures recite turgid technical and safety statistics to argue for its dominance. Biotechnology advocates refer to their interlocutors as “flat-Earthers” for resisting genetic modification. Climate campaigners demand a “wartime mobilization” of renewable energy technologies, casting aside concerns about energy system transitions, fuel prices, and local preferences for energy infrastructure. This is an understandable impulse; the promise of new technology is appealing to many, and societies have never had greater capacity to safely integrate innovation than they do today.

But it would be foolish to conclude that the best stance is to laugh off social resistance and blindly cheer the forceful arrival of new technologies.

Hallmarks of modernization include the centralization of production and the democratization of consumption. In other words, we have never had access to more and better technologies, but we (or at least most of us) are also far removed from the modes of production that make modernity possible. This distance from the source of ever-changing technology makes it inevitable, and appropriate, for the public to exercise its democratic skepticism toward a variety of innovations. The skeptics’ case is even stronger when innovation arrives without their consultation, which, as Juma puts it, “may confer more benefits to the producers, but [also] exposes them to collective action by consumer groups.”

So innovation’s enemies are not simply the enemies of modernity. They are modernity itself, with all its contradictory desires, forces, and discourses. Integrating this diversity of values and perspectives will take, Juma writes, “a worldview of the future that visualizes exponential technological advancement, appreciates the perception of loss in complex socio-economic systems, and develops more appropriate approaches for supporting informed decision making.” That means bold and bright political leadership. It means movements to fire up the public’s imagination. It means negotiating and channeling multiple social perspectives toward solving common problems.

It also means that the innovations and technologies we hope for might arrive a little more slowly than some of us would like. But we shouldn’t forget, in our impatience, that we have never been better equipped to pursue a bright technological future.

RESHOOT R: Driven by Passion

Richard Löwenstein about why releasing for Amiga almost makes sense.

What is the driving force behind someone who is developing games from an almost dead genre on a hardware platform which seems to have died about 25 years ago? Because that’s what I did! I released a horizontal scrolling shoot’ em-up called RESHOOT R on Amiga end of May 2019.

I invested roundabout 2,000 hours of a precious lifetime into developing. To understand the reasons behind this decision, let me rewind the calendar to the mid-1980s – a period where electronic gaming was, ­although in its infancy, already experiencing its first big transition. The first wave of consoles was being followed by more versatile programmable home computers, which lowered the entry-level for potential software architects massively. Everyone could now learn how to make games.

This is the time when my career in game development started. In 1985, at the age of 15, I finished developing Twinky goes ­hiking, the first of several successful ­commercial releases on the most classic of computer hardware platforms, the ­Commodore 64. Other titles like Persian Gulf Inferno followed. My career as a developer ended in 1991 when several loose contacts to magazine publishing houses strengthened and I was given the chance to become a member of the team of Amiga Joker, Germany’s leading games magazine by then.

Joining the editorial staff meant a great opportunity but also killed my game ­developer ambitions since both jobs are very time consuming, and I preferred to focus. Back then it was clear that I would not finish my most ambitious games project at that time: an elaborate shoot’ em-up for the Amiga-platform, an action game in the classic R-Type-style. It should have been a lighthouse project, a game more beautiful and faster than comparable products at the time.

RESHOOT R is designed to read map-files created with “Tiled“ and restart at the edited position immediately. That lowers turnaround times while designing and testing significantly.

A new market emerges Fast forward to the summer of 2015. When I cleared up my cellar, what emerged were several Amiga home computers I had ­retired by the end of the 90s. One of them contained the source code of my old shoot’ em-up-project, which I had buried in 1991. As fate would have it, at the same time I wrote some pieces about the flourishing market for new games releases on the ­8-bit-platform Commodore 64. Like vinyl and vintage cars, old games ­machines ­seemed to gain attention. Several indicators hinted for an emerging situation: mainly the growing number of retro related exhibitors at gamescom, and an increasing number of new games releases of professional quality not only on Commodore 64, but also on other platforms like Amstrad/Schneider CPC. My favourite vintage games platform – the Commodore Amiga – did not get its share of new releases though. That seemed strange because it used to be the most popular games platform in the very early 90s in Europe. It’s said to have sold about five million units in the EU-territory, still has loyal followers, and is very popular within the demo scene. I assumed that it’s comparably elaborate to develop games for Amiga, so much so that a classic one man show – common constellation on ­older ­8-bit-systems – can hardly handle the job. The Amigas 16-bit-technology, though antique by modern standards, ­already ­enables quite sophisticated content. It takes trained specialists to take care of design, coding, pixels and music if the result was to be on par with the best games released in the heydays of the Amiga. Also, the Amiga was not very popular outside of ­Europe and therefore – unlike the Mega Drive – cannot confide on momentum from US- and Asia-based developers.

It felt like it was time to change that. I felt the fever for coding returning, decided to revive my old source code from 1991 and maybe develop it into the fully fleshed game I had envisioned about 25 years ago. Such a project is time consuming and not to be finished within a few hours. I ­calculated with an investment of three hours a day, four days a week, six months minimum. Such an enormous additional burden on the time account could not ­easily be ­reconciled with a regular job and a family. My approach: night shift. Get to bed at 10pm; wake myself at 2am; develop several hours undisturbed; return to bed and wake up with my family. Sounds crazy and it maybe is, but it works. But why, you may ask. The answer is simple. Passion. The implementation of a lifelong dream. I want to prove to myself that I can develop a high-quality Amiga game and maybe gain some attention and recognition. July 2015 marks the beginning of my project of heart.

RESHOOT R runs on the classic Amiga-models A1200, A4000 and CD32, as well as compatible emulators and recent Amiga-clones like Vampire V4.

Retro platform, modern tools Very quickly I realised that Amiga development no longer works like in 1991 for me. In recent years I managed a couple of ­iPhone developments and learned how to use modern software tools such as Xcode and Unity on Apple Mac. The Amiga can’t handle common features, like multiple monitor setup or version control. Therefore it was clear that I had to setup a cross-development system. My main tools:

iMac. The built-in Internet connection has to be mentioned, because in 1991 this was not yet available. Gathering and sharing information is so much simpler today!

Xcode. Mainly works a comfortable code editor with version control, code completion and text highlighting; features not yet invented in 1991

FS-UAE Amiga Emulator. Almost 100 percent compatible to the real hardware. Extraordinary built-in debugging capabilities

ASM Pro. Classic tool running on Amiga. Translates source code into pure and fast machine language. Switched to VASM-cross-development tool recently

Tiled: A very common map editor for all kinds of 2D-games. Allows comfortable placement of tiles and objects in separate layers. Code on Amiga read and interprets Tiles’ XML-data-exports for use in RESHOOT

Commodore Amiga 1200. Real retro hardware used to test code regularly. File transfer between iMac and Amiga works with SD card which both systems can read and write

Another integral part of the development environment is a virtual hard drive partition, which the iMac and Amiga both can access to share source code and data files. Some few self-written keyboard macros automate the interaction of Xcode on the Mac and the tools on the Amiga emulator. One press of the F1-key stores source code, activates FS-UAE, loads source code into ASM Pro, compiles and executes. This takes about one second. On the real retro hardware this would take approximately 30 seconds. Turnaround times of 1991 and 2019 cannot be compared.

After establishing a working development environment, it took me some time to get back into thinking in Assembler ­language. To me, Assembler is still the ­purest form of coding because of it’s logical approach and direct access to the hardware. It’s fast, too. Much faster than anything if one knows how to handle it. The price for speed: Compared to C++ or C#, Assembler code looks rather abstract and unreadable, because it mainly consists of commands which provide memory access, logical operators and branches to control program flow. I should add that a dedicated game development environment comparable to Unity actually exists on Amiga, albeit much simpler. Also, like today’s ­modern operating systems, the Amiga OS provides libraries which handle visual, aural and input/output operations. But on classic hardware, processor cycles and memory are very precious. The ­Amiga libraries slow code down considerably, game development environments alike. Almost no reasonable games on the Amiga makes use of such features.

For my game it was ine­vitable to draw and move pixels as fast and memory-efficient as possible. I, therefore, did what most Amiga coders did in the heydays of the machine: switch off the OS and write custom code which fits the game like a glove. That’s what you need to do, if you want maximum performance on a 14 MHz machine with 2 MB of memory. These are the specs of the Amiga 1200, which is my favourite iteration of the Amiga-family and therefore became my target platform. I love this machine because of its elegant case containing considerably more processing power than the earlier Amiga models 500, 1000 and 2000. It was released just a few years prior to Commodore demise and therefore – like its console-cousin CD32 – did not manage to gain the same market share as the Amiga 500. Because of their versatility, the ­Amiga 1200, 4000 and CD32 seem to be on the rise now though. Prices for used models currently go through the roof.

The 2019 release RESHOOT R shows its creators have learned their lesson. It sets its focus on smooth gameplay with just some minor modern modifications. This resulted in very favourable reviews from Youtubers and the specialist press.

Don’t innovate too much At this stage, it occurred to me that – while I grew back into the code – I could ­modernise the game design. Why not incorporate new elements not seen before on Amiga? One idea was to add twitch gameplay with an endless structure. I imagined a kind of endless reaction test, fast and fluid as the Amiga classic Silkworm, mixed with ­elements of Japanese bullet-hell-shooters. The player’s survival would not be divided into many short chapters. Instead, there should be only one level and even a ­single life. Once the player’s spaceship hits an invader or a bullet: Game Over, score billing and new attempt. Just like Flappy Bird. That would be an interesting new alternative to Apydia, R-Type, Thunderforce IV, Last ­Resort and other classic horizontal shooters from the 80s and 90s that I found so intense and exciting.

It took me one year to finish ­developing RESHOOT – a game which I had started to work in the early 90s and which got its release in August 2016. It was not the high-quality shoot’ em-up I had in my brain at first. But it was proof that I can finish such a project. That seemed sufficient, especially as so many comparable projects fail to reach the finish line. RESHOOT was released physically on CD-ROM, simply because I wanted to feel the satisfaction of being able to touch the fruits of my labour with my hands. Within one year of development I learned a lot. So much so that, even before sending the ISO-image to the ­CD-ROM duplication facility, I started to work on a follow-up project. This was going to be the lighthouse project I had originally envisioned. I already had given birth to its name: RESHOOT R. The intention of the “R “mainly was to ignite discussions within the community about its meaning. I decided to invite the community to become involved in the development. Let people join the process, that means a serious investment of time and energy, but it’s important to gain attention. Also, this way I gathered feedback from RESHOOT-beta-testers very early and therefore knew I’d better change the game design for RESHOOT R fundamentally.

With RESHOOT, the intention was to use the basic shoot ‘em formula as a frame for mainly modern game design elements. This worked only partially. The endless gameplay got no love from the retro community. Therefore RESHOOT R got a total redesign. I planned it as a classic horizontal shoot’ em-up with a just handful of modern details, and focus on visual effects never seen before Amiga. The plan: classic stage-based structure with rising difficulty level, power-up-weapons, lots of change of pace, and narrative elements leading to a dramatic climax.

The 2016 release Reshoot tried to marry classic shoot’ em-up gameplay with modern elements. It rather failed. Customers seem to prefer old-school elements in games on retro platforms.

No more one-man-show Collaboration with pixel artist Kevin Saunders from Australia was a given. He did great work on RESHOOT and proved that he is a reliable guy. This is not to be taken for granted in a development scenario which is mainly driven by passion, not money. One of the main challenges while developing RESHOOT and RESHOOT R was to find and lead people who can actually pull through, who do not flake away after a couple of weeks or at the slightest sight of any obstacles. Kevin and I discussed visual ideas and quickly decided to ditch the very abstract and clean design of RESHOOT and instead go for a comparably natural ­approach, combining the fluid animation of 3D-rendered objects with the distinctive look of hand-crafted pixels.

The simultaneous use of music and sound-fx was inevitable. One needs to know that it was not common practice in the Amigas early years and is still difficult to implement nowadays since the Amiga only has four sound channels and can mix sounds only with severe constraints in the visual and gameplay department. But our ears are so used to a modern hearing experience, that anything less would not sound acceptable in 2019. To keep the music pumping while player projectile whoosh over the screen and the boss warcries after taking another hit, took weeks of detailed work.

Also, the switch to a different kind of music proved to be very important for the enhanced experience that RESHOOT R provides. I ditched the unconventional chiptune-music of RESHOOT for a ­modern, fast pulsed musical accompaniment of very high technical quality, comparable to what you would expect to hear on modern hardware platforms. A quarter of system memory was reserved just for audio use. This way the digital samples, which the Amigas Paula-customchip reads from memory and outputs through its four ­audio channels, would sound natural and not scratchy like is so often the case in Amiga games.

While talking about music, I need to mention gamescom 2016 and the importance of attending such gatherings. It was this visit that laid the groundwork for the audio experience. While showing RESHOOT to the public audience, I got into talks with Martin Ahman. Martin is a DJ and composer interested in electronic music. He told me how keen he is to, once in a lifetime, have one of his pieces in an Amiga game. He did not have any Amiga related releases on its curriculum vitae at that time. But he convinced me that he knows what it takes by sending a piece which was pretty close to what I had envisioned. It all resulted in audio tracks which not only drove the gameplay forward but which were so good on their own that prior to release, we decided to produce a separate Soundtrack-CD with remixes from the German Remix Group and others. Like Kevin Saunders, Martin Ahman is aware of the limitations of classic hardware and creative enough to work around them for the best possible performance.

The challenge is to create a 3D-illusion and move dozens of objects with only a 14-Mhz-CPU and 2 MB RAM.

Three years in the making It took me a while to enhance and modify the existing RESHOOT-Engine to cope with the many additional elements planned for RESHOOT R: I wanted narrative breaks, a diversified and sometimes surprising ­attack choreography, and parent-children-related objects which can be multiplied and combined to form bigger boss-like objects. One of my main goals was to add full screen perspective scrolling to enhance the illusion of visual depth. This has never been done in Amiga game before. The Amiga does not contain any 3D-capabilities, no scaling or texture mapping. Only a very simple GPU called “Copper“ can switch video characteristics at segments of each scan line. Therefore all perspective visual effects need clever coding since they must only use a minimum of CPU cycles while adding a maximum of visual impact to the experience. Doing this while drawing up to 100 moving objects on screen and keeping a steady 50 Hertz framerate proofed to be a very special challenge. Even down to optimising single bytes within data structures and counting CPU cycles for maximised performance within program loops.

One year after the initial development started, the engine was ready for its public debut at gamescom 2017. I showed one playable level and gathered a ton of feedback and ideas. It took another two years to implement the best proposals. One of the most important modifications concerns the collision system. It now mirrors the hitbox-based behaviour found in modern shoot’ em-up-games on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch. The added particle system not only looks nice, but it also helps distinguish cosmetic background graphics from collidable stuff. The extra weapon system now not only rewards persevering ­players, who remember and collect power-ups, with ­enhanced destruction ­capabilities; but it also incorporates an ­innovative shield ­function for the players ship: The hit of an enemy bullet only takes away one ­power-up, unless the ship returns to its ­basic configuration and a bullet hit is fatal. All these modifications add tremendously to the game-flow and playability ­experience.

RESHOOT R is a retro community effort, with contributions from several experienced freelance artists.

Community and media seem to agree. Favourable comments from Youtubers, ­excited reviews in specialist magazines and a number of editorial pieces – one of which was aired on the German public TV-channel ZDF – prove that RESHOOT R is not only a great Amiga game – it’s a great game on any platform. So it paid off emotionally. But did it work financially?

The Retro community is very creative, loyal and willing to buy games at prices comparable to modern console releases. The market is still very, very niche, though. This restricts sales but increases the visibility of each games release, provided its creators invest sufficient time and knowledge into community work and marketing. RESHOOT R is essentially a bet on the assumption that the retro games community grows like the vintage car scene did in the past 20 years. If this becomes true, the market might become serious in the near future. Games like RESHOOT R help create such a market. Because if they are good-looking and entertaining, they may be considered a viable alternative to products on modern platforms – not only for people who actually owned an Amiga 30 years ago but also for new customers wanting to experience this special retro flavour in the most authentic way. Future projects like Intellivisions Amico-console help putting the market into the limelight.

The challenge is to create a 3D-illusion through visual layering and move dozens of objects at the same time, with only a 14-Mhz-CPU and 2 MB RAM under the hood.

So, my newly founded retro specialist label “spieleschreiber” has a serious foot in the door and the business model is well and truly scalable. Conversions of RESHOOT R for Steam, Switch and Mega Drive-platforms are on the cards. The next AAA-release for Amiga is already in ­development: The fast-paced vertical shoot’ em-up RESHOOT PROXIMA III will bring Truxton-like space chaos onto Amiga. The game debuted at the Amiga34-­exhibition at the 12th October 2019 and will be released in 2020. Extrapolating from peoples interest at the show, this will be huge. Maybe it will even be the first Amiga game ever that gets successfully funded by a Kickstarter-­campaign. Tanglewood, Phantom Gear and several other recent projects for the Mega Drive-platform have proven it can be done.
