anyway i’m still thinking about RotT and 300 (the movie; I haven’t read the comic, though I think it was a faithful adaptation) because this is who i am as a person. there are, i think, some obvious similarities-- an invading foreign army, an unsuspected pass that could catch the home army by surprise so that they are unwittingly surrounded, pheris and ephialtes,
(not talking about the gods because they don’t come into play quite as much in 300 because the king defies what the priests say and we find out that they and the oracle have been paid off anyway. That’s uh obviously not the case in tqt also)
Pheris and Ephialtes are both children who ~should have been exposed~ due to some physical disability. Pheris is in the king’s service; Ephiates begs to be in the king’s service. He is the one to warn Leonidas about the goat path, but Leonidas will not take Ephiates into his service--the hunchback cannot hold his shield high enough--he is not worthy of being a Spartan warrior and cannot fight with them. Leonidas sends him away. Resentful and bitter, Ephiates betrays Leonidas to the Persians, leading to the Spartans downfall.
Meanwhile, Gen has every reason to distrust Pheris--he is the grandson of his most treacherous baron, the nephew of the man who tormented him and tried to have him assassinated. He was clearly meant to be a tool to humiliate the King. Gen was also warned in his dreams not to trust Pheris. He rejects this and actively chooses to trust Pheris anyway and to keep him close. Pheris’ betrayal is done with the intention of keeping the King safe from himself-- and it ultimately leads to warning about the Medes invading the pathway and victory for the Annux.
also, there are elephants
