Goffman’s dramaturgical metaphor is sometimes misunderstood. He did not claim that we are all frauds constantly misrepresenting ourselves. Rather, his point was that being a member of society required constant work – a constant process of impression management, of making oneself intelligible to others through subtle cues and gestures. Just as a character in a play is the result of an actor’s hard graft, so too is a person’s identity the product of an ongoing creative project, performed to and with an audience.

This work remains pertinent today, when social media influencers have turned identity construction and curation into an art form. Goffman’s theatrical metaphor also finds echoes in the contemporary idea of gender as performance, developed by Judith Butler in Gender Trouble (1990) and elsewhere. Goffman was ahead of his time in noticing that identity is constructed not just through talk, but through the body. We express our identities not only in words but also in how we move and how we dress – or what Goffman calls our ‘body idiom’.

Julius Erving’s Defiant Response to Critics Before His Championship Glory

In 1982, the Philadelphia 76ers suffered their 3rd consecutive Finals loss during the Julius Erving era.

Afterwards, an unusually somber, yet emotionally raw Erving challenged his media critics who labeled him a NBA-loser.

"The person who wants to be pessimistic, to throw stones at us, darts at us, can go ahead. Unless you put yourself at center stage and dare to be great, you can't be. You will never be. I'm going to keep daring. As I dared in the past, I'll dare in the future."

The very next season, Dr. J would go on to win his first NBA Championship.

people mistaking my conversational mannerisms as flirting is so wild to me bc that outcome just does not cross my mind. like what I do is mirror other people’s energy level, try to match my tone roughly to theirs, and generally say nice things or act curious about their thoughts. I don’t think it’s flirting bc there is no intention to flirt but I’ve been told it doesn’t matter bc it’s perceived as flirtatious. which is a hell of a bind lol ! if this is what flirting is it’s functionally meaningless to cordon it off as its own category of interaction especially if I keep doing it unintentionally. clearly its signs and meanings are not universal.
