I didn’t want to say it but in my expereince people who believe that aces are oppressed are often racist as well. As a person of color I’ve only known white people that act like they are oppressed because they identify as asexual and I really think it’s because white aces just don’t understand oppression. Honesty aphobia makes as much sense as reverse racism lol
I
ok so im not sure where the race thing came from here when i was talking about how being viewed as attractive while being asexual doesnt mean youre a waste of a pretty face and that being ace doesnt equal not wanting to date but ???? ok lets tackle this
so, im not sure if you actually saw the selfie i took that sparked this because you seem to be under the impression that im a white asexual complaining about how I am oppressed??? while not understanding oppression myself??
so uh, hi, im Aya, im Indian and im asexual!!
Im… very not white, dude. Im a visible minority and im asexual and like. no one brought up anything about how any one was more or less oppressed? That wasnt the point of any of this. Its true that poc lgbtqia+ probably do face more oppression and discrimination based upon their race on top of the already present oppression and discrimination that comes with being lgbtqia+, but at the core of it all lgbtqia+ members regardless of race experience oppression and are discriminated against to some degree?? This is very easily illustrated in white homosexuals/coloured homosexuals. All homosexuals experience discrimination and oppression to some degree. White homosexuals do however experience a different degree of discrimination and oppression than coloured homosexuals do, as coloured homosexuals are additionally oppressed through racism as well as homophobia within society and face the extra discrimination through that. However, regardless of race are both still oppressed and marginalized and discriminated against. The same applies to asexuals. All asexuals are oppressed and face discrimination. White asexuals do not face discrimination and oppression in the same way that coloured asexuals experience but they are absolutely still oppressed and discriminated against. This isnt the oppression olympics. Nobody is arguing about who is more or less oppressed than the other or who has more privilege and should be quiet. All asexuals experience aphobia, all homosexuals experience homophobia and all people of colour experience racism. Sometimes you can experience multiple sources of discrimination that stack up, but they are all equally valid sources of oppression as discrimination individually too and no one can erase that. Aren’t we erased enough?
Aphobia is a very valid serious thing that is nothing like the unfounded grounds of reverse racism because asexuality is still viewed as something that can be cured in the same way that homosexuality is, you know? Neither asexuals or homosexuals are broken or in need of fixing but homophobia and aphobia both paints them as inherently wrong and as something ‘other’ that can be cured. Corrective rape exists for asexuals the same way it exists for homosexuals, which in itself is a clear indicator of how aphobia expresses itself and the validity of it.
Additionally, I feel like what is important is solidarity, especially solidarity within the lgbtqia+ community. With the amount of gatekeeping and aphobia within the lgbtqia+ community as well as the aphobia in the heteromantic+heterosexual community, asexuals do not feel like they have a place to belong in either place, which is absolutely not okay? Asexuals belong in the lgbtqia+ community. The A stands for asexual, aromantic and agender. Asexuals belong because they are oppressed and erased and marginalised against the same way that homosexuals and bisexuals are. Asexuals understand oppression. While it isnt the same as race based oppression, asexuals regardless of race are still oppressed.
I’m sorry for the wall of text, or if anything unclear. I could definitely elaborate more but It’s past 5am and my thoughts are getting muddled. If you’d like I’d be happy to answer any questions or clarify/expand on points.
