I was rereading One Piece for Reasons (tm), and in the first chapter, when the narrator introduces the Red Hair Pirates by saying "a pirate ship made the village its base"

In Japanese, it's

海賊船が停泊している

The word 停泊 (teihaku) means anchorage or mooring.

So the ship (and, by extension, the Red Hairs) made the village a place to anchor themselves, to keep them tethered. An anchor keeps a ship safe, keeps it steady, without one no ship would get very far.

And the first person from the village we see, standing on that very boat, is tiny Luffy with an anchor t-shirt.

I know that we all know that Shanks canonically cannot shut up about his little guy, but it's so sweet that the first thing we see of both of them is an implicit acknowledgment that what kept them in that village for so long, their "anchor" there, as it was, was Luffy

[By the way, I know Shanks keeps calling him anchor and the idea is really really cute, but I don't think he means it in that way. He calls Luffy カナヅチ (kanadzuchi) which means hammer, or a person who can't swim and sinks like a stone. So he's really just making fun of him here, which is also amazing because my man is 27 years old and bullying a child]

I was once again thinking about this goofy Luffy moment after his Lucci punch™ and i had to see it frame by frame.

first the force of it throws them both away, and while Lucci is seen on screen tumbling for a long moment, Luffy is just away in a blink of an eye.

and then his funny scene - his legs are like jelly that he tries to get under control,

he stumbles, falls, rolls into a mix of all his limbs and eyes,

and then only the cloud behind him cushions his fall

- which would be interesting if he can subconsciously control that while he tries to regain the control over his movements - that the environment around him still adapts to his awakened Devil Fruit abilities and morphs to help him. Where others would probably fall through that cloud, for Luffy that cloud backs him up like a trampoline.

It's just fascinating!

things I wish I could relive for the first time again:

that magical window where you finish a new piece of media, having watched/read it all by yourself with no fandom contact whatsoever, and you are just so happy about it, and full of interesting theories and takeaways, and just in love with it as a gorgeous piece of art.

because I swear to god as soon as you join the fandom for anything, you're bombarded with how you're supposed to view characters and their arcs, how you're supposed to morally and ethically judge the plot and the ways it apparently failed to present the right message, and if you don't you'll either be shunned for not sharing the popular headcanons or you'll be harassed for not criticizing the source material enough.

like how is it that the fans of a piece of media are also the ones being the most negative about it? If I like a show or a movie or a book, well, I liked it. That's kind of the point. I'm actually not here to tear it apart and talk about how it didn't live up to standards other people had! I enjoyed it for what it was, and forcing myself to find negative things to say about it doesn't actually bring me more enjoyment of it or reap any benefit to me. Fandom's a double-edged sword; you want to join a community to share your love for a piece of art, and the price you pay for a modicum of joy is a mountain of negativity. that's one main reason that I never engage with fandom until I'm completely done with a show, because if I was plugged into all of that commentary and discourse during the process, I'd be completely colored by how I'm expected to interpret everything this piece of art is presenting to me without being able to even form my own opinions.

Why isn't Natori's cousin arc talked about much ?

It was such a masterpiece of a story. it was very powerful and tragic which just hurts so much and I'm not over it or I'll ever be, it also had so many things to talk about .. like a lot for example:

-the undying trust Natori had for Natsume that no words reached his heart like Natsume's words

-that deep sad desire inside his heart which later on got crushed in the ugliest of ways not once but twice

-the fact that the Natori clan might have some secret that led people fearing their return or hating them which might be what led someone to break the barriers that protect their house ?

-Natori hating himself more and more for being weak and having such simple desire (NOOOOO PLEASE T^T)

-Natori pushing himself through his trauma for Natsume's sake !!!

-Natori's family being as worse as Natsume's relatives! I SO HATE THEM AS MUCH AS NATSUME'S RELATIVES!! THOSE COWRDS!!

-some more exorcist lore! "I thought he would wear a hat" pleaaase that killed me I can't see him doing it xDDD

-Natori's complicated emotions about the Matoba ><

ive started a brainstorming doc for the kaiji koi-koi fic and a large large amount of it is just trying to figure out what works about kaiji and how i can innovate without diverging too much from the tone or themes etc. anyway ive been thinking about how the modifications fkmt makes to the games in kaiji function (i.e. minefield mahjong, restricted rps, one poker, etc), and how they each tie into key traits/feelings of playing to original versions. minefield mahjong centers and intensifies the feeling of waiting on a crucial tile while trying not to leave too much of a trail, one poker leans heavily into the bluffing via raising/calling elements of poker, and rrps sort of flips rps' main issue(?) on its head by removing its arbitrariness (while preserving at first the illusion of arbitrariness), and thus making it like.. something you can win via strategy and not just luck. ANYWAY i think ive figured out the key thread to pull for koi-koi and im very excited about that
