Concerto Coffee, 750 S Oxford Ave Unit 102, Los Angeles (Koreatown), CA 90005
Tumblr media
As a fan of Concerto Bakery in Ktown, I was happy to see the new outpost of Concerto inside Zion Market. It’s not the same as the other location. This one is smaller with a limited selection of baked goods. Even the coffee selection is different. They are serving Kona coffee grown in Hawaii but roasted by Concerto at this location.
The baked goods (baked at their other location) include a few types of salt bread and egg tarts. They also offer premade sandwiches. The drinks include your typical espresso drinks, specialty lattes (e.g., banana, tiramisu, haupia, tonics, and teas (including matcha and Hojicha). Cream top is an option. They do not offer pour over coffee or cold brew.
Salt bread ($3.25): soft and chewy, firm exterior,  the salt is sprinkled on top but the bread isn’t salty. It looks like a giant crescent roll. The salt bread at Okayama Kobo is softer.
This is a smaller location with a few small tables inside the shop and more tables outside (but still inside the building). It’s a cute small café with the cutest salt bread signs.

The Green Bean, 1600 Campus Dr Occidental College - Johnson Student Center, Los Angeles (Eagle Rock), CA 90041, Score: 33/50
Tumblr media
The Green Bean, Oxy’s student-run coffeehouse, has reopened. It was closed for two years (during the pandemic). It seems to be as popular as ever. I went in the afternoon and there was a long line. Also, most of the seats were taken.
Score: 33/50
Food: 2/5 –  There isn’t much to choose from (donuts, potato chips) but it’s near the campus eatery, so you could go there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Coffee: 4/5 –  Choose from espresso drinks, cold brew, matcha lattes, teas, lemonade, smoothies, and hot chocolate. They use Unincorporated Coffee Roasters. The latte had way too much ice but the coffee was good.
Wi-fi: 4/5 – Free, unlimited for campus visitors
Ambiance: 3/5 – Grungy and noisy, feels like a college coffeehouse
Noise: 1/5 – Music plus a lot of talking
Plugs: 3/5 – Saw a few on the walls
Parking: 4/5 – Permit parking on campus but it’s easy to find free street parking right off campus.
Comfort: 3/5 – The place has a student dorm feel – communal tables in the center and counters around the perimeter. The chairs aren’t padded.
Bathroom: 5/5 – There isn’t one there but there are some in the student center.
Art: 4/5 – The walls are decorated with student art.
Tips: You can bring your own container and I think you’ll get a discount. Also, there is more seating outside and in the dining room.

Jurassic Magic, 2502 W 7th St, Ste E, Los Angeles (Westlake), CA 90057
Tumblr media
Jurassic Magic opened its second location a few months ago near MacArthur Park. It’s in a lovely historic building and has creative neighbors, like the film production company and letterpress business. JM feels like a creative space too, with art books for sale and even artsy looking trash cans.
They do not roast coffee beans but they serve a local roaster, Boxx. Choose from drip coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, tonics, and specialty coffee and tea drinks. For milk, they have whole dairy, almond, oat, pistachio, and coconut milk. A cold foam cream top is available. No pour over coffee.
Fancy drinks seem to be their thing. The limited drops have creative names. For example, Magic Pond Water is an iced matcha with coconut water, topped with matcha cold foam, a touch of date sugar, and garnished with coconut shavings.
They have good quality pastries from Sugarbloom, including croissants, cookies, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and vegan donuts.
Spinach & cheese croissant: tasted good but the interior was mostly an empty air pocket, could have had more layers
My flat white ($4.75) was made with skill.
They don’t accept tips, which was surprising. Parking is a challenge and the area is dirty with many unhoused hanging around. It’s a nice place to camp and enjoy the free wi-fi, though the metal chairs aren’t comfortable.

Score: 35/50
Food: 4/5 – There is no kitchen. They have good quality pastries from Sugarbloom, including croissants, cookies, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and vegan donuts. My spinach & cheese croissant was good though not amazing. The interior was mostly an empty air pocket.
Coffee: 4/5 –  Locally roasted coffee, coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, specialty coffee and tea drinks. For milk, they have whole dairy, almond, oat, pistachio, and coconut milk. The coffee is roasted by Boxx. A cold foam cream top is available. My flat white was made with skill. They have fancier sounding “limited drop” drinks.
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, password is by the register
Ambiance: 4/5 – Artsy and open with high ceilings, art pieces, art books for sale, white walls, metal tables and chairs
Noise: 4/5 – Music is loud but chill
Plugs: 3/5 – Spotted two or three outlets
Parking: 1/5 – Tough, mostly metered or 1 – 2 hours on residential streets
Comfort: 3/5 – Metal chairs are new and hard,  tables aren’t too close, some of the tables are too low for laptops
Bathroom: 3/5 – One unisex
Art: 4/5 – Two pieces that look original
Tips: Art books and zines are for sale. They don't accept tips.
