how many changes can you make to a game before it stops being the same game?

what if I do it gradually instead? slowly change the artstyle, the plot, the gameplay, just a tiny bit at a time. is it still the same game if it's broadly the same? if I can still kinda give the same blurb to describe it?

I'm mostly thinking about this because of Final Fantasy I (I'm always thinking of this game it seems), and how every successive port of the game changes things little by little. I find it hard to believe that "Final Fantasy" on the PSP and "Final Fantasy" on NES are in any meaningful way the same game.

like, say you took all the map data from Super Mario Bros and copied it over to Super Mario Maker. is it still Super Mario Bros? why or why not? what if I copied it over a different game, like Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World or Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. is it still the same game then? when did it stop being the same game?

what if I remade the game from scratch based on what I can see playing it? everything looks largely the same, but if you're experienced enough with the original you can clearly tell things are off. certain movement constants or enemy behaviors don't quite match. some secrets are missing because I didn't find them. to an average player it might seem identical but anyone that's played the game for long enough can tell its not the same. so is it the same game? what if I managed to convince Nintendo to sell it, is your answer the same? this one's not a hypothetical. I'm talking about a real game here

following back to Final Fantasy I, can any of the later versions of the game be said to be "the same game" if they don't share the artstyle? if the combat system has been fully redone? if the gameplay loop no longer resembles the original? the story is broadly the same, but characters are there now who didn't exists. characters have different motivations behind their actions as before. is it really the same game still?

and if not, when did it stop being the same game? when the graphics got changed? when the battle system got redone? that happened twice, do you feel the same about both of them? when the story stated drifting? what even makes the game "the game"? I'm unsure myself

Final Fantasy I is a weird game. Final Fantasy I is a weird series of games. No game is truly Final Fantasy I, unless they are. Final Fantasy I is like if the Ship of Theseus was a game.

you ever play Dawn of Souls? it's a really fun game. can't recommend it enough

What's your favourite weird video game controller/peripheral? 🤔

Main one that's coming to mind right now is the Dreamcast Fishing Controller.

It looks fairly unassuming, but it's secretly a motion controller!! You can use it to play SoulCalibur as if you were swinging a sword or swing your tennis racket in Virtua Tennis!! Why does it do all this!!

Now if only it was compatible with Big the Cat's fishing sections in Sonic Adventure....

I attempted to write this into a fanfic but failed so many times, so accept my drabbles about a slightly angsty talk between the Akutagawas.

Akutagawa has very few fears. The thought of being afraid itself was foreign to him. But this...this was something that had kept him up at night, even before he became the leader of the guerilla squad.

He wondered, he feared, would the day come that Gin would be afraid of him too?

It wasn't a surprise, to wonder about this, to think like this.

Gin was one of the few people in the world who didn't see him as the Mafia's Rabid Dog, who didn't think he was the Apostle of Calamity and Despair, who didn't see him as an absolute monster.

To her, he was just Ryuu-niisan. Her older brother. Part-time irritation, full-time overprotective sibling.

Maybe it was to silence his thoughts that he actually approached Gin.

"Gin, are you afraid of me?"

"Um, no?"

That...was not the answer he anticipated.

So he went to the topic another way.

"Gin, I could kill everybody in this room."

"Hmm? Maybe later. Let's finish shopping first."

and again.

"Rashoumon could easily flip this bus upside down."

"Try not to do that. We might not make it to the coat sale."

until he just gives up.

And asks Gin directly.

"Gin, have you never felt fear of me? Have you never been afraid that at some point I might harm you with my ability? Do you not think I'm a monster?" he choked back another word, a beast.

Gin stares at him for a moment, questioning which one of Dazai's schemes got into her brother's head again.

Before she finally answers, half-smiling:

"Brother, I've seen you trip over your own feet because you were too preoccupied by a book, and curse for a full minute when you spilled calligraphy ink all over yourself."

"I could never see you as a monster."

Thinking about Mummies Alive again and that if the show was more true to ancient Egyptian mythology then Scarab would have run afoul pretty much the entire pantheon by killing Rapses.

Like...so many of the gods were devoted to protecting the Pharaoh, and cosmic balance was also a big thing in their cosmology. So I feel that Scarab’s whole “oh I’m going to murder the son of the man with the largest and most blatant amount of divine favor--who would have inherited that same favor--and use his soul to cheat death” scheme would have spat in the face of what the pantheon stood for.

Also, for a guy who’s utterly terrified of dying, I find it hilarious that he regularly allowed Ammut, the Devourer of Evil Souls, to just chill in his house on the regular. Honestly, any underworld deity would probably want a piece of Scarab, especially any that were particularly concerned with tombs and the desecration of the dead.

You know that Anubis once flayed Set and wore his skin as punishment for trying to desecrate Osiris’s body further, right? And Bes was a guardian of children? Scarab’s ass would have been grass.

I think the best thing about Ex falling in love with Ms. Accord during his paralogue, is that he voices Chrom, while she voices F!Robin. One of her voices, I mean.

Although now this means that Ess, who voices Sumia, is madly in love with him.

I talked a while back abt how I think Ess could eventually regain her memories of Ex as her father but they'd have to work through things/re-bond a while before she actually got any memories back. I think even after she remembers that he's actually her father (and comes to terms with the fact that he didn't abandon her of his own will etc, starts to trust him again) she still doesn't regain her memories all at once the way tee did, that's a process as well. Though they're mostly happy memories it still tends to make her pretty emotional.

but like at least at that point they can work through it together and ess has. an actual human parental figure to depend on through it (zed tries his best he really does but he doesnt have a lot of particular capacity for emotional support...) but yeah thinking abt that period. I feel like she's softer toward him at that point but not as saccharine sweet as she is to zed. It's like somewhere between how she is with zed and her siblings, she isn't as thorny with him as she can usually be seen to be with her siblings but also y'know. the sass is still there a bit. She'll still call him out for not getting rest and doing self-sacrificial things and such, she won't just. go along with stuff unquestioningly. She will shake him like a maraca. (Also. I think she’d still be attached to Zed,,, holy shit two papas) however there are probably. a few instances of ess either coming through the portal to just sit with him a while because she got lonely/suddenly missed him or ex getting someone to watch the edge for a second so he can sit with her a little longer because she's struggling a bit.
