Okay I'm desperately trying to find examples of horror film artbooks, or ANY concept art for older low budget horror films. I'm not finding much at all, which does track bc of the nature of these productions but they still would have had production art, that art has to be somewhere. SO if anyone has book recs or blog posts or anything pleaseeee drop them. Rn the best I have is the mars attacks artbook, the return of the living dead art book and some really shoddy production art for house of 1000 corpses I got off a prop site. Long shot too but any kind of concept work for John Water's films would go crazy as well, so far I've only got tangential stuff like the scrapped designs for the Pork stageplay with Divine and the paper doll book that Van smith illustrated (costume designer and stylist for his films and for Divine).

#they do absolutely want nice clean concept work 4 school but too bad for them. I'm obsessed with studying how designs are #conceptualized and presented based on budget like this #like my project is based off John water's films and B horror movies it makes sense to study the production art of low budget films #even the presentation of the art #like the pork designs were released on antique sites first afaik #it's just overall harder to find this kind of rougher production or pre-production art which is a shame

#shes cool as fuck to me bc when I first played jfa I found her really frustrating to deal with #not just as Phoenix but I mean like on a personal level she is challenging because she’s so thorough #and yet I also find it fascinating that she breaks the character she’s built for herself once in a while #i 100% believe that I don’t think she would have caught on to what Phoenix was trying to do while stalling for time with engardes trial #so it’s probably a good thing edgeworth subbed in but she literally busts her ass to bring evidence to court #almost right after having a bullet extracted from her WHICH SHE ALSO PRESENTS AS EVIDENCE. thats metal as fuck ok #especially since she would technically have nothing to do with the case after edgeworth fills in and she still decided to do that anyway #maybe it was blind faith to use that evidence to win since she wasn’t there for most of the trial but still #and even if canon doesn’t give it to me I still firmly believe there’s be at least some chemistry between her and Maya #like especially if you hold it next to wrightworth that works bc there’s already a history there and majority of Phoenix and miles trying #to relearn their relationship is Phoenix coaxing out that side of Miles that he remembers from fourth grade #but with Franmaya it’s something new and they’re basically strangers to each other and one of them almost got the other convicted #and I still think that’s fascinating and it’s a damn shame thay half of the fics I find for them on ao3 is background in wrightworth fic #i did find a good one that touched on Franziska trying to win pearls approval because Pearl does hold a grudge against her #and seeing that trying to live up to perfecting even her personal relationships without getting to know Pearl to even know #why it wasn’t working feels believable when I think abt her as a character yk #myart #my art #doodles #aa #ace attorney #franziska von karma

Low key very tired of people responding to veilguard criticism with something along the lines of “lol these people have no media literacy, didn’t you understand what the game was telling you??” Yes, yes I understand what the game was trying to tell me. That doesn’t mean I have to like it or the way the writers went about it.

Also the whole argument of “well, the dragon age fandom proved they couldn’t handle xyz controversial character/element of the story so that’s why veilguard had very little references to those things” kinda grinds my gears a bit. I don’t think it can be proven with 100% certainty what writing decisions were made based on past fandom reactions to the other games, but I do think it would be an incredibly shitty move to simplify or remove complexity from a story just because there might be a portion of the audience who doesn’t get it. “The fandom couldn’t even handle Vivienne” Yeah a good amount of people dismissed her as a selfish snooty bitch, but I didn’t and a lot of other people didn’t and to remove complex and interesting characters like her on the basis that enough people “won’t get it” just feels like a disservice to all of us.

I get that video games are products and for a product to sell more it’s gotta have mass appeal #and to have mass appeal it’s gotta cater to a wider audience #so yeah maybe simplifying things and removing controversy is good for the bottom line #but as an appreciator of art and good storytelling it just wounds my soul a bit lmao #also even if you’re afraid your audience won’t get something #wouldn’t it be better to present the more complex versions of things on the off chance some people grow and learn from it??#maybe some people will encounter something that makes them uncomfy #and if you give them a chance to just SIT.
