Kali figured she’d be able to grab a bite to eat before the next band came on, exiting the water only to find her way to the food boats while sipping on a bottle of water. The introverted girl usually didn’t like crowds like this but in her short time on Fire Island she’d come to really appreciate the celebration- mainly for the music and the food. She’d finally chosen a line to get in and had been waiting for about ten minutes when the loud beat of a drum caught her attention and her gaze turned towards the stage. A new band was warming up and for a moment, Kalisa was lost in the sounds, small smile on her face until a voice from behind her caught her attention. “Oh.” She said softly, bashful smile coloring her features. “I’m so sorry, you can go ahead of me. I’m still trying to figure out what I want... the uh, music distracted me.”

​​Halide watched in perplexed fascination as the newest competitor tackled the second round of the obstacle course... in a full lobster costume rather than a swimsuit. “I can’t tell if I should be impressed,” she murmured, “or really, really confused right now.” 

Just when you think you’ve seen it all. 

The soft wisp of a laugh tickled her throat and she shook her head... moments before realizing she’d actually spoken out loud. Her gaze swiveled to the left and snagged on the closest face. “I— sorry,” Hali inwardly cringed. Right on cue, her cheeks flamed pink. “I have this habit of—” talking to myself, apparently. 

She tucked her lips over her teeth, if only to stop herself from blurting that, too, then expelled another, rather sheepish laugh. “Sorry. Ignore me. I think all this sun has gone to my head.”

Miami Beach to ban coolers, inflatables during Spring Break

Spring Breakers, beware

In an effort to help deter the appalling amounts of trash and ruckus typically seen on the Miami Beach sand during Spring Break, officials are upping the rules this year, per the Miami Herald:

The strategy includes a ban on coolers, tents and inflatable devices on the beach, along with stricter enforcement of the existing ban on alcohol on the sand. Neighborhood streets would also be closed off to nonresidents, and noise limitation on amplified music would be enforced.

Police would also use license plate readers on the causeways to check for outstanding warrants and stolen cars.

From Miami Music Week to Floatopia, there are many specific events during the spring that have piled up the trash on the South Beach sand. However, the latter likely won’t be occurring this year, judging from the organizers’ Facebook post the morning after last year’s event.

I see a few potential issues with the city’s no-coolers rule, however.

First, it will limit access to water during one of Miami’s warmest times of the year, which could increase the risk of dehydration.

Second, they have to realize Spring Breakers are going to drink no matter what. The rule could backfire because now instead of beer, there could be more of a tailgate mindset, downing large amounts of liquor before approaching the checkpoints on the sand.

Partygoers leave 10 tons of trash on Virginia Beach after Memorial Day ‘Floatopia’

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Visitors to a beach in Virginia dumped 10 tons of trash and debris during an unofficial event some call “Floatopia,” city officials said.

The City of Virginia Beach released a statement saying the event was not permitted and they were disappointed in the condition the beach was left in after the event.

Video and images of the garbage went viral when residents started sharing what the beach looked like Monday morning.

Virginia Beach spokesperson Drew Lankford told CNN the event was not city-sponsored or sanctioned. The event began with a Facebook invite and spread through word of mouth.

“If youve been to a Floatopia then ‘ya know what its all about,” read the invite. “Bring your own beverage in a cup/coozie/cooler, and of course-FLOATS!!!!”

CNN has reached out to one of the event organizers but has not yet received a response.

“Most of us have never heard of it,” Lankford said.

Now, they have.

“We’re happy to have people come down there and enjoy the beach and have a good time,” Lankford says.

He even says had he known about it he’d have probably gone out there to partake. But it’s a public beach and they should have cleaned up after themselves.

“It’s not fair, particularly to the people that live right there,” he says.

Since then the trash has been removed. The city said they take great pride in keeping their local beaches clean and thanked their Beach Operations crew for working swiftly to make sure the beach was once again clean.

They also thanked citizens who helped pitch in to clean up as well.
