#event: phantasm amalgam pt1

"Hey, listen! This is incredible! Every time I open this box there's a bowl of a new kind of noodles!"

It was a normal cardboard box, blank but about the size of the average microwave. It was tilted on its side, and sure enough, when they next opened the flaps a new bowl was present and piping hot.

"Want some? I'm still only halfway through mine."

Please note that this does not begin until Friday, December 20th at 12:00:01am EST. No starters, info posts, or ads can be made before that point. This is just an information post for preparation's sake!

We previously teased that we'd be doing something different for the December event, and this is it! Because everyone is busy with the holidays and there are likely event reruns some members would like to do but can't since they never win the polls, we decided to try a period where you can choose whichever event you'd like to write during the three week event period. We're posting this in advance so you can think about what you'd like to pick!

There are, of course, some rules and caveats for this:

Most events are available to be chosen but not all of them. This is because some of the staff who wrote those events are no longer with us. You can find a list of eligible events at the bottom of this post!

You must choose a single event to receive event participation with on any single blog. You're more than welcome to thread with others doing other events so that they have people to write with, but you can only claim participation for a single event during this period!

There is a flat reward of a free unlock for everyone who participates regardless of whether or not the event you pick gives an unlock. This is so everyone receives an unlock regardless of the event chosen. Picking one that gives an unlock will not give you two, you will still only receive the single unlock. You must write at least 300 IC words for your chosen event to be eligible to claim the unlock.

The usual rules on the EVENT RERUN GUIDE still apply! Your character will see the city in the state that it was in during that event, and will believe everyone is going through the same thing.

A more complete post will be made on Friday with any questions that have been asked in the interim. So if you have any questions about how things work, please send them to the masterlist (not the Discord server) before Friday!

There was an abnormal machine in Golden Ward today. With a futuristic touch panel to interact with and a strange title over the top of it — ARE YOU ALIVE? — it was certainly eyecatching, but only one person seemed to be interacting with it so far. That person was the one to dream it up for a very specific purpose, and was now putting their hand on it a third time.

ALIVE, the result read, and a small burst of confetti shot out of the machine's top. Again.

"It still says I'm alive. Do you think I can trust it?" Kyrie asked the one teenager that had gotten remotely close to the thing.

"I can't think of a name for this one, but it's very cute, isn't it?" A small, adorable white bird was perched on their right shoulder, as content to be there as the numerous other little birds: some on the ground around Kyrie, a few on the bench, a couple more on their left arm and a final one on their head. They all looked almost too cute to be real, and came in many gorgeous colors.

Continuing to introduce the birds to the stranger, they said, "That one's Jewel, the one over there is Daisy, this one is—"

"Dandelion!" one tiny yellow bird chirped by itself.

"—Dandelion."

"Your Honor, my client did not steal the macarons from the display plate!" Kyrie insisted passionately, leaning both hands on the counsel table.

"The evidence says otherwise," stated the much calmer prosecution. "No one else could have come into the kitchen at that time."

"It's not like there are cameras in the house!" Kyrie shook their head in disbelief. Gesturing invitingly to Break, they said, "You should let him testify, at least. I'm sure he'll make everything clear."

How did they get into this slightly off courtroom? That was a great question, but Kyrie was more invested in acting out the part thrown on them than finding that answer.

HOW PARTICIPATING IN MULTIPLE EVENTS WORKS

As a preliminary reminder: you can only claim participation for a single event regardless of how many you participate in. Participating in multiple events is more to help others get interactions as most members will be choosing different things.

Characters are sent to a different digital reconstruction of the city depending on which rerun you're doing. Areas unique to the event are recreated in this space too.

Characters will not remember being in multiple events at the same time during the event period. You can't have a thread in Subversion and then hop into The Maskerade Festival and have your character recall being in Subversion right before that. They will remember all of the events after this event period is over, however.

Because the event reruns take place in a digital space, there is no 1:1 timeline with the outside world. Reruns have no tangible effect on the city where business continues as usual. Just because your character feels like they spent a week in an event does not mean a week has passed in the city proper. Just keep in mind that events do canonically last two to four weeks depending on the event, so your character couldn't spend more than that amount of time (from their perspective) in a single event rerun.

It was weird to be staring at this kid like "the sun was eaten by a monster" was deeply unbelievable when boxes were spawning fully cooked bowls of noodles right now. It was, and yet.

"...And that's, uh, fine? The monster left the Earth alone, and the sun disappearing didn't make things go into another ice age or something?"

Was... he one of those unreliable narrator types? At least they knew Garry existed!

"It's neat that we knew the same person. I'll guess she's out right now, right? Sorry about that."

"Uh-uh! Our Sun was eaten by some monster." That was pretty much the gist of it of course. There was more to it than JUST that. At the mention of Garry being known by this person, Oliver leans forward, a big smile on his face and an eager nod. "That's right! She is the PRETTIEST." the smile wavers for just a moment, but then he laughs, hiding the bitter feeling that almost surfaced,

"I didn't even think they looked like spider legs, but now I can't unsee it!"

"I guess it's possible?" This kid was a little more imaginative than them. Kyrie needed to step up their game. "Is there not normally a sun?"

Already their imagination was getting a workout. Picturing the world without the sun shining on it was difficult, even with their limited experience of it for quite some time. That would have to have a lot of environmental effects.

"I met a Garry here, once. Did yours have purple hair? Almost looked like spider legs on top?" they asked, lifting their hand to the crown of their head to point where the unusual strands had been.

"Mmmm! Maybe something large can come out of something small like this? have you seen Maria Puppinz? She carries a small bag and can pull ALL sorts of things out of her bag!" It would be worth the try, for sure.

Their question earns the biggest and sun-shiny grin of all time, "I got bring one of my favorite places here and imagine there to be a sun! It was nice." As well as sad. Did they call that bittersweet?

"Kinda wish I could have shown Garry though. I bet she'd love to have seen it too."

"Depends on your definition of "biggest". The box isn't that large, so you can't dream that big about something inside of it... and I feel like you should be able to swim in a noodle bowl with that title." Should be able to and would want to were separate concepts.

"Have you created anything cool in... all this?" They gestured vaguely, then took another bite. It was difficult to take their eyes off him... his enthusiasm in devouring the contents of his bowl was inspiring.

Oliver's smile doesn't leave his face and happily, he is guzzling down the noodles like some wild animal! "I'm Oliver! These noodles are great, but I DO wanna try something different too!" Maybe after he's finished with this slightly spicy one.

"You think this thing will be able to make the BIGGEST bowl of noodles?" Will he be able to eat it all if yes?

"Yes but no," they answered him very helpfully. Taking a step back from the machine, they tapped their lip with a fingertip and stared down at the concrete. "I'm not sure what the difference would be. I mean, it's been like five years since I was alive normally? I was a plant and part moth for a while, but that was more of a whole third and fourth thing I've been, rather than going back to the way I was before..."

They didn't look like the alraune or moth versions of themself. They looked like they always did back when they were attending college; the appearance they took on again after death.

"I guess I'm just afraid that since I made this thing show up, I also might be making it lie to me," Kyrie admitted. "But it would be nice if it was true!"

        he watched them, curious, for several moments as the person pressed their hand to the panel yet again, the confetti the result summoned fluttering to the ground to join the piles that were already there. danny wasn't really sure what had attracted him to the machine, and the person using it—the sign? his ghost sense misting from his mouth? the strange aura that seemed to surround it? he wasn't sure, but either way it didn't seem quite right to interrupt the person in front of it.

     well. not until they asked him a question.

    ❝ I'm not sure if I'm qualified to answer that. ❞ in more ways than one, danny thought as he shrugged. but they didn't need to know that. ❝ Do you feel alive? ❞

Passing the latest noodle bowl to him, they took a moment to stare at his face. There was a faint memory of this... of a boy with wild red hair who had looked totally lost.

"Oh, yes! I did do that." After a second, they nodded — then used their chopsticks to funnel more noodles into their mouth.

Now able to feel self-conscious about their behavior back then, their cheeks got redder with each thoughtful chew. After they swallowed, Kyrie started to ramble nervously: "Well, glad the impression I left was 'super nice'! I'm Kyrie Huet, by the way. They/them. If you uh, dislike this kind specifically, you're welcome to try again with the box roulette... it might even take requests!"

"WHOA!" What kind of magic was this?

A dreamlike situation definitely, but seeing this delicious kind of noodles, it just feels like it's TOO good! "I would LOVE to try some~!"And he's already by their side, nearly salivating. But..Wait,

"Hey, you're the super nice person who pat my head!" Well, in the process as well ruined his hair but he didn't care about that.
