—
Your college dorm is a familiar sight, the mess of papers and coffee cups giving away the fact that the end of the year is fast approaching. You've been sharing this space with Felix for the past couple years, both of you working hard to keep your grades up and—hopefully, somehow—graduate?
…You're sure it'll be fine. As long as you do well enough on your capstone project, which is why you're sitting at Felix's desk, dutifully researching. Sometimes you take to his room when you need a change of scenery or just want company; though it's just you right now as Felix had to leave for class earlier.
You're just about to take a stretch break when you hear the front door open and soon enough, Felix trudges into the room. “Still here?” he says when he sees you.
“Unfortunately.” You set your things down and look over at him with a long sigh to convey your exhaustion.
“Dude, same,” he groans, tossing his bag on the floor before flopping down on his bed. “I don't think I've ever been so fucking tired in my life. Why did I pursue higher education again?”
That gets you to laugh a little. “Maybe for some kind of high-paying job and… a sense of accomplishment?” you suggest.
He lets out another groan, rolling over on his side. “But at what fucking cost? Sleep deprivation and a caffeine addiction?” He looks at you with wide, pleading eyes. “Remind me why I'm doing this again.”
You get up and walk over to his bed, sitting down on the edge next to him, a playful smile on your face. “Well, I seem to recall someone who said they wanted to be some hot shot computer engineer.”
He props himself up on one elbow to face you. “Ooh, you think I'm hot?” he says, wiggling his eyebrows.
You give him a look that hopefully conveys how much of an idiot you think he is. “Hot shot, dumbass.”
…Still, it would be dishonest to disagree: your roommate is attractive. Anyone with a working set of eyes can see that.
“Ohh, I see. You think I'm hot shit?”
You roll your eyes so far back it almost hurts. “As if you don't hear that enough.”
He grins, clearly amused and clearly not above shamelessly fishing for compliments. “Oh, but it's so much more fun to hear it from you,” he teases, leaning back against his pillow.
You give him a withering glare but he just reaches out and pats the spot next to him on the bed. “Come sit down.”
You raise an eyebrow at him. “I am literally sitting down.”
“Okay, well, closer, genius.”
You sigh exaggeratedly, but you humor him anyway, scooting over closer to where he's lounging on the bed. You thought that was enough, but this is Felix, and you should have known better. He reaches out and grabs your wrist, gently but firmly tugging you down next to him.
He shifts so he's on his side facing you and grins, clearly satisfied. His hair is messy and there's a hint of dark circles under his eyes, but he still manages to look unfairly attractive.
You shake your head at his antics and let out a long sigh. “Well… You've already made it this far, you know,” you tell him. “Only a few months left of dealing with school, and then you're done.”
“...Yeah.”
He's quiet for a moment, his gaze drifting across your face, a hint of something almost like melancholy in his eyes.
“Why am I kinda sad, though?” he finally asks with a chuckle.
You blink. “Sad? About being done with school?”
He nods. “I mean, I want to be done, god, believe me I do, but…” He blows out a sigh, running a hand through his hair. “I dunno, it just doesn't feel as good as I expected it to. And I'm…” He pauses, clearly thinking his words over.
“I'm… gonna miss this, honestly. A lot.”
“This?” You gesture around the room. "You're going to miss this? Our tiny-ass, overpriced apartment?"
He laughs at that. “Not this place, I guess.”
“Then? The constant lack of sleep? Exams? The shitty cafeteria food?”
“Please,” Felix scoffs before taking a deep breath, looking somewhere behind you. “I'm… going to miss this." He looks back at you and pokes your shoulder for emphasis. “This. Us living together. Hanging out all the time. I'm going to miss that.”
You blink, a little taken aback at his earnestness. “Oh,” you say intelligently. “Yeah. I…”
You try to ignore the way your heart is suddenly in your throat. In truth, you've been doing your best not to think about it, how things will inevitably change after graduation.
“I mean…” you start. “It's not like we're never going to see each other again or something. We'll keep in touch, right?” But even as you say it, you feel yourself deflating. It’s not the same.
His expression reflects yours, his smile soft but a little sad around the edges. “...Of course we will.” He sounds like he's saying it as much to himself as he is to you.
He's silent for another moment, his fingers gently running over the blanket, not quite meeting your gaze.
“It won't… be the same though,” he says, mirroring your own thoughts. “Like— you know? I'm gonna miss the convenience store we always go to at 2AM, I'm gonna miss our late-night study sessions and the shitty coffee you make, I'm gonna miss how you always use up the hot water in the shower and your annoying alarm waking me up at fuck-ass in the morning—” He suddenly cuts off, a flush rising in his cheeks.
He turns on his back again, slinging an arm over his eyes. “Ugh, I don't know, just shut up and let me wallow in my feelings.”
You're honestly a little speechless. All that, things he claims are annoying — he's going to miss it all that much?
“Hey,” you say gently, nudging his shoulder. “Hey, you sap, look at me.”
“No. I'm wallowing.”
You roll your eyes. “I can see that.” You poke his arm. Then again, harder. “Come on, look at me.”
Felix huffs dramatically, lowering his arm and turning his head to look at you from the corner of his eye. “What? I’m looking.”
Your heart clenches at the sight of him. He's pouting, looking a little petulant but still so endearingly cute, and you can definitely see the hint of embarrassment in his gaze as he peeks at you.
You let a smile spread across your face. “You're gonna miss me.”
Felix averts his gaze, his cheeks going a little pinker. “I mean, a little, I guess,” he mumbles, before letting out a heavy, dramatic sigh. “Ugh, why are you looking at me like that? Don't let it go to your head or anything.”
It's so obvious that it's more than just a little — but you decide not to call him out on it. Instead, you lean forward, propping yourself up with one arm. “Too late,” you tease, grinning widely. “You're gonna miss me so much.”
He groans, throwing his forearm over his eyes again. "Whatever. Shut up.”
You look at him silently for a moment, taking in his flushed face and his messy hair. God, he's so cute. You've always been aware of how pretty he is, but there's something about seeing him like this, completely unguarded and vulnerable, that's making your lungs feel tight.
You clear your throat awkwardly, shifting your gaze away from him. “Hey, come on, cheer up.”
“No,” he says, still hiding his face behind his arm. “I'll just lay here and wallow and die."
“So dramatic,” you chide, poking his side roughly, trying to distract yourself from your own thoughts. You're starting to feel a little flustered too.
He whines at the contact, swatting at your hand, but you notice he hasn't moved his other arm away from his face. “Ow, hey, violence,” he complains, curling away from your fingers. “Ow, ow, dude—”
You reach out and grab his wrist, pulling his hand away from his face. He lets out a half-hearted protest, but doesn’t get the chance to resist.
Oh. His eyes are shining.
You freeze.
He's pouting again, but it's less childish now and more vulnerable, embarrassed. For a moment you just sort of stare, suddenly hyper-aware of how close the two of you are. His face is so close, so pretty, and your heart is doing something strange, beating rapidly in your chest.
“You’re—” You clear your throat, struggling with what to say. You… hadn’t realized how much this was impacting him.
He looks away and blinks hard, but his eyes are still a bit misty, unshed tears stubbornly sticking to his eyelashes. “Sorry. I'm being stupid,” he finally says, his voice a little quiet. “Ignore me, I'm just being weird, it's—” He swallows. “...I'm tired.”
Oh, god. You've been joking and teasing and making fun, but now you just feel like the biggest jerk, because he's actually really upset about this.
“Wait, no,” you murmur, suddenly serious. “No, it’s not— You're not being stupid. I—” You're having a lot more trouble than usual forming coherent sentences.
Your hand is still around his wrist, your fingers pressing against his pulse point. You squeeze it lightly. “It's okay.” You can feel the rapid beating of his heart, in contrast to the rest of him lying completely still. “It's not stupid. I’m— I'm gonna miss you too, idiot.”
He lets out a wet sounding laugh at that, rolling his eyes, but he doesn’t pull his arm away from your grip. “So mean,” he says. “Do you have to insult me to say nice things?”
“Well, yeah.”
The corners of his mouth twitch and you feel a bit of relief that you've managed to cheer him up a little.
“But you mean it?” He looks up at you with a shy expression. “You're gonna miss me?”
“Of course,” you say, suddenly struck by how much you mean it. “Yeah, I am. A lot.”
He lets out a low breath, eyes flicking over your face. “Yeah?” he says quietly.
It's silent for a moment. Felix is still looking at you, a little shyly, and it's driving you a little crazy. He sighs, his brow pinched slightly, like he’s struggling with some internal conflict. You wait patiently, giving him space to express what he wants to say.
But he doesn't. Just averts his eyes and blinks harshly at the wall behind you.
“Please don't cry or I'll start crying too,” you say with a bit of a nervous laugh.
Felix lets out a shaky breath. “...I’m not going to cry.”
You give him a look.
“I’m not,” he insists, using his free hand to rub his eyes. “I have allergies or something, I just— I—”
He hesitates, clearly trying to gather his thoughts.
“Okay, look,” he sits up, pulling his wrist free from your grip and taking a deep breath. “It's just— I…” He stops, running a hand through his hair nervously.
“Felix?” you ask, sitting up too. You're starting to get a little concerned. Why is the mood suddenly so weird?
He groans, burying his face in his hands, his voice muffled when he speaks. “This is embarrassing.”
It doesn't help your concern. “What’s embarrassing?” you ask carefully, trying to keep your voice steady.
“This,” he mutters, still hiding his face.
You hesitate a moment, not really knowing what to do, before tentatively reaching out and touching his arm. “Um… It's fine, you can talk to me.”
He lets out a frustrated breath before finally looking at you. “You’re not gonna like it.”
Oh. “Well… Did you… like, kill someone or something?”
Felix stares at you for a moment, clearly trying to keep a straight face but his lips twitch a little. “No, I didn’t kill anyone, you psychopath,” he says dryly.
“Okay, well, good,” you say, clearing your throat. “No illegal activities? The government isn't after you?”
“I… No,” he says slowly.
This conversation is taking a bizarre turn. “And you're not, like… secretly an alien sent to spy on humans this whole time? And… now you have to return to your home planet to plot the annihilation of Earth?”
That finally gets Felix to laugh. “You're— you're a fucking idiot,” he says through giggles. “Seriously.”
“I’m just checking,” you say, crossing your arms. “You're being all weird and shit and…” you gesture vaguely. “Maybe you're an alien. I don't know.”
That only sets him off giggling again. “Oh my god,” he says, leaning his forehead on your shoulder, his body shaking with laughter. “Why are you so dumb.”
You roll your eyes, just relieved to see him smile. He's much more relaxed now, the mood in the room lifted with his laughter. All part of your plan. You're more than happy to appear ridiculous if it means seeing him laugh.
He finally stops laughing, though he’s still smiling a little as he lifts his head and looks at you. He’s much closer than you anticipated, and you try not to be too distracted by the freckles around his eyes and the way his eyelashes flutter when he blinks as his gaze flicks across your face. He’s looking at you intently, and the air in the room feels charged, electric almost.
“You…” he starts, but hesitates, cutting himself off with a shake of his head. “Why are you so dumb,” he repeats.
Wow. “Now who's being mean?” you pout.
He laughs again, but it’s softer than before, a shaky, nervous sound. “God, I— this is so stupid, I—”
He lets out a frustrated breath, staring directly into your eyes, his expression intense and focused. “How do you not notice,” he mutters under his breath.
You’re frozen under his gaze, your heart suddenly in your throat. “Notice… what?”
Felix closes his eyes. “Nevermind. It doesn’t matter.”
What? “It seems like it matters since you’re…”
He opens his eyes again, looking a bit pained as he looks at you. “Just… just forget it.”
You don’t know what to say. You can feel your heart beating wildly in your chest, your hands shaking slightly. “Uh… okay,” you say. “Sorry for… being dumb…?”
He grimaces. “No, I didn't mean it like—”
He lets out a long, heavy breath, shaking his head. Then he reaches out and takes your hand, his fingers brushing against your wrist.
His voice is quieter when he speaks, looking down, idly playing with your fingers. “Just… you’re supposed to notice,” he mumbles, almost to himself. “It’s supposed to be obvious.”
You stare at him, confused and flustered and… honestly, a little distracted by how he's touching your hand. “What's… uhh, what?” Everything feels like it's too much all of a sudden, and your chest is really starting to do something weird.
He sighs. “Nevermind. Seriously.”
There's a moment of silence before he speaks again. “When we graduate,” he starts. “...Which I guess is really soon, huh.”
The way he says it makes your chest pang painfully. He’s still not looking at you. “I won’t see you anymore…” he murmurs, his voice so quiet you can barely hear him.
You grab his hand, stopping him from fiddling with your fingers, and squeeze gently. “Hey,” you say. “C’mon, it’s not like that.”
He huffs out a bitter laugh. “Isn't it, though?”
It kind of feels like you’ve been punched in the gut. This isn't like him, he's usually the one full of sunshine and optimism, reassuring you. But right now, the defeat in his voice is palpable.
The reality of the situation starts sinking in. Time’s almost up.
“Felix,” you say quietly, and he finally lifts his eyes up from his lap to look at you. His eyes are watery again.
He swallows, his voice breaking a little as he speaks. “Sorry, I’m being… I’m being unfair, I just…” He hesitates before continuing. “I don’t want to not see you.”
You frown, tears pricking your eyes now too. You don't trust your voice to speak, throat feeling tight and uncomfortable.
“And you’re just… so oblivious,” he continues, his finger tracing over your knuckles. “So stubborn, and dumb, and you’re probably the most annoying person I’ve ever met in my life and I seriously cannot believe I like—”
He cuts off suddenly, slapping a hand over his mouth.
Wait.
“Felix,” you murmur, and his eyes dart up to meet yours, a little panicked. He tries to jerk his hand away from yours, but you hold on tighter, keeping him in place.
“Felix,” you repeat, your skin buzzing from the way he’s looking at you. “You can’t just… leave me hanging like that.”
He looks away, face a brilliant crimson red. “Yeah, I can.”
You almost want to laugh. You didn’t realize he could be so shy, but you can’t focus on that now, because your heart is racing and you can’t tell if you’re going to pass out, or pass away.
“No, you can’t,” you say shakily. “When are you gonna tell me? At the commencement ceremony?”
He lets out a half-choked, almost hysterical sort of laugh, keeping his head turned away so he doesn’t have to look at you. “Yeah, something like that.”
He has to be joking. “That’s months away!”
“And?”
You shake your head, feeling dizzy. “I’m not gonna wait that long, are you insane?”
He huffs and glares at you, pouting. “Oh, well I’m sorry, would you just rather I shout it from the fucking roof tops then? Hey, everyone, I’ve been in love with my best friend since freshman year!”
What.
You blink, stunned speechless, your eyes wide.
Your mind is spinning, the air in the room suddenly too thick to breathe. The words in love keep ringing in your ears, over and over again.
“You— you what?” you manage to get out, feeling a little faint. You must not have heard him correctly. You're hallucinating, or having a stroke or… something. He can't actually mean—
Felix winces. “...Fuck.” he mutters, dropping his head into his hands.
“Oh my god,” you whisper, brain still struggling to catch up to the situation. You’re still processing that he said the word love, when the last few words register.
“Wait— freshman year?” you say incredulously. “You’ve— since—?”
He’s clearly trying to act somewhat composed but the bright red on his ears betrays him. “Um. Yeah. Shut up. Stop talking,” he says, voice muffled from behind his hands.
You think about the past few years of your life, every interaction with him, and it’s like everything suddenly clicks into place.
The way his ears turn pink whenever you compliment him. The way you could always get under his skin so easily. You think about every time he got defensive, or huffy, or pouty at something innocuous you did or said.
…The way he's never really shown interest in anyone, despite the plenty of interest shown his way. The countless people he's turned down, for seemingly no reason. When you'd questioned him about it, he'd just laughed awkwardly and said he preferred to focus on his studies.
“Oh my god,” you say again.
Felix groans and hides his face further, his ears practically on fire. “Stop. Don't,” he mutters. “It's okay. Just… pretend you never heard that, okay, it's fine—”
“No.”
It’s silent for a moment, Felix still hiding his face, and your mind still swirling with thoughts.
You kind of want to kiss him.
The realization is sudden, but not entirely unexpected. It’s not really a surprise, honestly, just another thing that feels natural. Maybe because deep down, of course somewhere along the line you've developed feelings for the person you can trust with anything, who gets you more than anyone else. Your favorite person in the world.
You’re only half in your right mind as you grab his wrists, pulling his hands off of his face.
“You ass,” you say, staring directly at him.
He looks at you with wide, panicked eyes. “I'm sorry—” he starts, but you cut him off.
“Can I kiss you?”
He chokes, eyes going even wider. He opens his mouth, then closes it, clearly caught off guard. After a moment, he manages to find his voice, though it’s very high pitched and shaky. “What?”
You take a deep breath. “Can I kiss you,” you repeat, your head feeling fuzzy, your pulse pounding in your ears.
“…What?” he asks again. His face is bright red. “Are— are you serious?”
“Do I look like I’m kidding?” you murmur, leaning even closer, your faces almost touching.
His breath catches, and his eyes dart between your eyes and your lips. “Please say you’re not,” he manages to say, voice breaking.
“I’m not,” you say, feeling a little crazy. Insane, maybe. You can’t really bring yourself to care. “Can I?”
He doesn't give you an answer, letting out an incredulous breath before grabbing the front of your shirt and yanking you forward as he falls back so you land on top of him.
You’re about to protest at the continued lack of a clear answer, but then he’s kissing you and you forget how to speak.
It's not the most graceful kiss, you’re both a little clumsy, but it’s sweet and it’s Felix and that’s all that really matters. You figure it out quickly, getting into a rhythm, and he lets out a shaky breath against your mouth, his hand moving to tangle in your hair. You feel like you’re dreaming, or drowning, or both.
Felix is kissing you. Felix is kissing you. Your closest friend. He’s in love with you, and he’s kissing you.
It makes your head spin. After several moments, you finally pull away, panting and dizzy. You feel a little delirious, staring down at him, both of you catching your breath.
His head falls back against the pillow, face turning impossibly red as he blinks at you like he’s in shock. You laugh a little and he huffs, but his eyes soften.
“So… you, uh— You— Are you—?”
You cut him off with another touch of your lips, effectively shutting him up. He instantly melts into it, tightens his grip in your hair, pulling you further into the kiss, and you can’t think straight, everything is just Felix.
After a while, you’re forced to break away again for air. Felix whines at the loss of contact, eyes half-lidded, his cheeks flushed. You only manage to get a few breaths in before he's pulling you down into another kiss, more urgently this time.
You let out a surprised noise, and he takes the opportunity to slip his tongue into your mouth. He seems to be determined to kiss you senseless, and it’s working.
He bites your bottom lip, making you gasp into his mouth. He mumbles something in response, his thigh sliding between your legs, and your brain short-circuits.
Okay. You shiver. Okay. You should probably… You manage to pull away for a much needed breath and Felix tries to chase after your mouth, but you press a hand to his chest to hold him in place.
He groans, looking frustrated, but flops back against the pillow obediently. He blinks at you dazedly, his own chest heaving, eyes half-lidded and dark, but his expression quickly morphs into a pout. “Why… Why…?” he complains, trying to tug you closer again.
You huff a weak laugh, shaking your head, and he gives you a wide-eyed look, all innocence and sweetness, and that's not fair that he can look like this after all of that.
“Just— one sec,” you somehow get out, your mind still completely overloaded. “We should… uh…”
He’s still trying to reach your mouth. “What,” he mutters, breathing heavily against your neck.
“Talk,” you manage to say, even as his lips make their way to your jaw. “We should… we need to… oh my god—”
You cut off, stifling a gasp as he sucks on your skin. “Felix,” you say, trying to be stern, but it comes out like a moan instead.
“Mm?” he hums against your ear, completely unapologetic. “You want to… talk?”
“Yeah.” It takes all your willpower to pull away, ignoring how he whines in protest. You sit up and take a moment to compose yourself, willing yourself to ignore the urge to just give in to him.
Felix flops back onto the bed, throwing his arm over his eyes as he sighs, his voice sounding a little raspy.
“Sorry,” he mutters, his ears red. “Sorry, god, I've thought about this so much, I just—”
Oh. “You’ve… thought about…? How much…?”
He makes a strangled noise and covers his face more thoroughly, voice muffled. “Oh my god,” he groans, “I'm going to fucking die. I… a lot.”
…Okay. Okay. Deep breaths. Okay.
“...How much is a lot?” you ask, unable to resist your curiosity. And maybe you want to tease him about it. Just a little.
He groans again. “So, so much. An embarrassing and pathetic amount.” He’s not even trying to hide his pouting. “Can you please not make me say the actual words.”
You bite the inside of your cheek to keep from laughing, but the way he sounds — breathless and embarrassed — it’s honestly kind of adorable. He’s always so confident in most aspects of his life that you kind of love seeing him so flustered.
“Please… don’t,” he mumbles, peeking at you. “I’m begging you…”
He's blinking up at you, the picture of innocence once again. He glances up at you through his eyelashes, all pretty and delicate and ugh, he's absolutely doing this on purpose.
“You’re distracting,” you say weakly, staring down at him. “Stop making cute faces at me.”
He does not stop making cute faces. He tries though, lowering his hands as his face drops into a scowl. “I’m not making a cute face,” he protests.
“Yeah, you are,” you say, raising an eyebrow. “You’re doing it right now. Your pouty thing.”
He sniffs. “I'm not,” he says petulantly, though there’s a hint of mirth in his eyes. “This is just my regular face. It’s not my fault if my face is cute.”
You roll your eyes. “Yeah, okay.”
He opens his mouth to respond but you cut him off with a finger, placing it over his lips. His mouth instantly snaps shut, and you can’t resist a little grin as he looks up at you with wide eyes.
You watch as he swallows, his eyes fixed on you, and, not for the first time, you’re reminded of how pretty he is. He’s always been gorgeous, in an objective sort of way, but you feel like you’re seeing him for the first time.
You move your hand away and take a deep breath, trying to gather your thoughts. You need to talk about this while you’re both still somewhat coherent, or you’ll go absolutely insane.
“So…” You’re a little pleased with how steady your voice is, considering the circumstances. “You… love me.”
Felix coughs and covers his face again. “Do you have to say it like that,” he groans, his voice muffled by his palms.
“You never… you never said anything.”
He just shrugs, still hiding his face. “I was scared to lose you,” he says with a shaky breath. “I didn’t expect you to want me back…” There's no bitterness in his tone, just disbelief.
You frown. “But you’re—” You bite your tongue. Felix was worried about you not wanting him?
You shake your head, a somewhat acrid feeling welling up inside of you. You've seen firsthand the sheer amount of attention he gets from people, from the random gifts and outright confessions and people slipping him numbers and notes everywhere he goes. There's never been a shortage of interest in him, from all sorts of people. Compared to him, you're… nothing.
“So… this whole time, you just… thought I was clueless?” You're still trying to wrap your head around it.
He sighs. “I mean, kind of,” he says, his eyes peeking through his fingers. “You’ve been completely oblivious to anyone who’s ever flirted with you.”
Including me, he doesn't say, but you're starting to put the pieces together.
You wince, your face flushing. “I’m not that oblivious,” you protest weakly. “I just… I’ve never been particularly interested in… anyone.”
Felix stares at you, one eyebrow raised.
“Like…” It's true that you've never really liked anyone very strongly in all your time at college. Some fleeting crushes here and there, but even the few people you had tried to go on dates with always felt lacking in some inexplicable way. You always felt much better as soon as you'd come home to your shared space with Felix, always feeling the most comfortable in his presence. Was that it? All this time, no one could ever compare to your best friend?
And the constant attention Felix would get… It annoyed the hell out of you. At first, you would tease him, even encourage him to give them a chance, delight in the way his face would turn bright red. But it quickly became so annoying watching him have to navigate awkward conversations, politely turn people down. Sure, a part of you was probably a bit insecure always watching him receive so much attention. At least, that's what you told yourself. But beyond that, you think you're finally starting to understand the feeling for what it is.
Jealousy.
“Oh my god.” You’re starting to realize what a mess this entire situation is. “We're both idiots.”
Felix finally drops his hands from his face, giving you a dry look. “Speak for yourself.”
"Shut up," you say absently, not even annoyed. Your head is reeling.
This is… a mess. Felix is in love with you, you’re pretty sure the feeling has been mutual for a while, and you’re both leaving this place in just a few months.
“So… you’ve never liked anyone before?” Felix asks. His tone is a bit teasing, though there's curiosity beneath.
You make a face. “Um.” Yeah, that's what you thought for the past couple years until now. How much do you reveal?
All of the puzzle pieces are clicking into place in your mind, making your head hurt even more. So much time wasted, you want to cry.
“I guess no one ever compared to you,” you say without thinking, and immediately slap your hand over your face.
“Oh.” There’s a second of silence as you both process the words.
Then, Felix starts laughing.
“Oh my god,” he mutters, struggling to contain himself, barely managing to keep his laughter under control. Your face is growing redder by the second, embarrassed and annoyed.
“Will you stop?” you whine.
“I’m sorry, I just—” he tries to get himself together, taking a deep breath before looking at you fondly. “This is the corniest fucking shit I've ever— holy shit. We're actually both stupid.”
“I told you,” you say, smacking him on the arm.
He just snickers, grabbing your wrist before you can hit him again. He pulls you so you’re half-lying on top of him again, and you can feel his shoulders shaking as if he’s trying to keep from bursting out into another fit of laughter.
You let your head fall against his chest with a huff, still annoyed even as he wraps an arm around you, his hand rubbing against your back.
“You jerk,” you mutter.
He hums, sounding amused. “You love me.”
You go rigid, and he starts to laugh again, obviously enjoying the fact that he found an easy way to fluster you.
“Shut up,” you grumble weakly, burying your face against him.
It isn't fair. He’s had time to fully realize it, years apparently. He’s had time to process everything. Meanwhile, you feel like you’ve been completely blindsided.
He finally stops laughing and you’re both quiet for a few moments. You can hear his heart drumming loud in his chest.
“Wow,” he says suddenly. “We could have avoided a lot of stress if we realized earlier.”
You let out a snort of semi-hysterical laughter. “I know,” you agree, before pausing and wincing. “Oh god, I can't believe we've been… that we've been living together…”
“Yeeeahh… That's been torture by the way,” he says conversationally, as if he's discussing the weather, and your cheeks flare up.
“...Torture?”
He squeezes your side. “Are you kidding? Have you seen yourself every day? Every time you wear my jacket, or… anything? Wearing those hoodies on movie nights—”
“I get it,” you cut him off, your face absolutely burning. “I get it, I’m—”
“Stupid?” he offers helpfully. “Oblivious? Cute?”
“...You never said anything,” you say weakly in an attempt to defend yourself.
“I wasn't going to make things awkward,” he protests. “Can you imagine if I’d actually said anything and you just… what? Said no? And then we have to keep living together like normal?”
You bite your lip, trying to suppress the guilt stirring in your stomach. You can’t even begin to imagine what it's been like from his perspective.
“...Sorry.” You shift so you can actually look at him, but he won’t meet your eyes, his gaze fixed on the ceiling as he pouts.
“You really didn't notice?” he asks, finally looking at you. “Even a little?”
“No.” You feel a frustrated sort of laugh bubbling up. “We’ve been so stupid. We could’ve… we’ve wasted so much time, years—”
“Hey, hey,” he interrupts, seeing your expression, sitting up and gently placing his hand on your cheek, and you stop abruptly. “It doesn’t matter,” he says reassuringly. “We have time, okay? Plenty of time.”
You’re still struggling with the whole situation, trying to process everything as you stare at him. “But… we’re graduating.”
He gives you a small, unsure smile. “Yeah. We are.”
"And… I don't even know where I'm going. We could be—”
“Hey.” He cuts you off, placing a finger gently on your lips, and you bite your tongue, looking down at him. “Stop worrying so much. We’ll figure it out, okay?”
You try to take a deep breath and he leans forward until his forehead is touching yours.
Your mind is still racing, your entire universe is completely tilted, and you’re not entirely sure how to deal with any of it. But Felix is close and his hand is still on your cheek and…
And you want to focus on that instead, ignore everything else for now.
“Yeah?” you say weakly, your eyes fluttering shut.
“Yeah,” he says, his voice a little more firm, and he brings his other hand up to cup your face.
“For now,” he continues, his breath warm against your skin. “Let’s just…” He lets out an unsteady laugh, his hands still gently framing your face. “Can we just…”
Your entire body feels a little shaky. You lean forward a bit, closing the distance, and he sucks in a sharp breath.
“Yeah,” he breathes before slanting his mouth against yours.
It’s not very decorous. You’re both a little desperate, a little uncoordinated, trying to make up for years of lost time.
It’s messy and you can feel that he’s still a little nervous — as are you — but he's also determined. He pulls you closer, one of his hands sliding into your hair, tugging gently in a way that makes you gasp into his mouth.
Then he suddenly pulls back after a few moments, laughing when you whine pathetically in protest.
“Shh, hang on,” he says, slightly out of breath, and you open your eyes dizzily.
“...What?” you complain.
“Sorry,” he mutters. “I… I just remembered that I…”
You watch, utterly befuddled, as he pushes against your shoulders so he can sit up. He gently lifts you off of him, answering your whine of protest with a quick kiss before his hand drifts away from your face, reaching for his phone.
You try to grab at him. “What are you doing—”
He laughs and dodges out of your reach. “Just gimme a second,” he says, turning his phone on as he settles back on the bed.
You sit there, feeling dazed and frustrated as he taps at his phone, his attention focused on the screen. After a few moments, he finally seems to finish what he’s doing, putting his phone down with a satisfied hum.
When he meets your eyes, he just looks amused at your expression. “Sorry, sorry,” he says with a grin, moving closer to you again.
“What was so important,” you pout.
“I was meant to meet with my group mates for our project tonight,” he says. “So, I told them I'm feeling sick.”
Your eyebrows shoot up. “Felix.”
He has the audacity to just smile innocently, already shifting so he can push you down against the sheets.
“What?” he says casually, hovering over you, his hands coming to rest on your waist. “I wasn't gonna be able to focus anyways.”
“Oh.” You can feel the heat rising in your cheeks again. “Is… that really okay…?”
“Don't worry,” he says, leaning down and pressing a light kiss into your neck. “I practically carry them anyway, they can live without me for one night.”
You swallow, feeling his hands slide up your arms, his touch leaving a trail of sparks along your skin. “Okay,” you agree, completely distracted now, your thoughts hazy.
“Mhm.” He sucks on a sensitive spot on your collarbone and you let out a shaky exhale. “Can we focus on something else right now?”
You nod. He moves up to kiss you and you know, with him, you'll figure out whatever comes next.
For now, that's enough.

You've been typing on that computer for the last three hours, yet the current task was not quite completed. Between the short deadlines and electricity mishaps, today hasn’t been good to you. Not that it was any of your boss’ business, as he put it a couple hours prior, and I quote: “I do not care if it doesn’t work, you better work this out quickly if you want to keep this job!”
You did try, for the customers, but at the end of the day, you were feeling exhausted and helpless. Useless.
It hadn’t always been like that. When you were a kid, you’d always help your classmates and younger kids. If you witnessed, even one of your classmates, bully anyone, in recess or anywhere else for that matter, you’d jump into the fight to protect the weak without a second thought. You’d feel powerful and useful. Changbin admired you for that.
Changbin.
Your childhood best friend.
He was part of the weak, but you made sure he was untouchable. Let’s just say you scared your fair share of bullies. A few years passed and you were inseparable; your parents were close friends so you’d spend the weekends and holidays together besides school.
Two weeks after Changbin turned fourteen, you were both seated on a rug on the beach, enjoying the summer holidays together at his parents’ beach house. The sun was setting, people were leaving to go dine somewhere else. You turned to stare at his side profile. He had a soft smile on, the sunset reflecting on his dark orbs, the light making his skin golden.
“Binnie.”
“Yeah?” he replied, facing the baby pink and light yellow clouds above the ocean.
“If we don’t find love in like 10 years, will we get married?”
He laughed for a good minute. “What are you on about?”
“I don’t know,” you admitted, “I guess the atmosphere has something to do with it.” He hummed. “But do you agree?”
“Ask me again.”
You nudged him. “You’re not gonna laugh at me this time?”
He looked over his shoulder in your direction, lips pressed as to suppress a giggle. “I’ll try.”
“If we don’t find love by the age 25 or so, will we get married?”
He faked thinking, a hand on his chin. “Sure, we can. I’m certain you’ll find someone by then, though.”
“Me? Why?” you asked, curious. “I thought you were the one that was gonna find someone first.”
He shrugged. “You’re an amazing girl. If you think I will, why propose this?”
“Just felt like it. Thanks for the compliment Binnie, you’re the best best friend I could ask for.”
“I know,” he smirked while you pulled your tongue out.
A week after that, your parents left the city, taking you with them. For years, you couldn’t see your best friend, who eventually became a childhood best friend as you grew up apart and stopped talking.
The drive home from work was spent singing your heart out to your karaoke playlist to evacuate the stress. You were seriously contemplating quitting your job when you opened the door to your parents’ house.
You let out a long sigh and the voices quieted down in the kitchen. “I’m home!”
Thank your lucky stars it was the weekend. A good shower and—
“Honey, come in the kitchen please!” You didn’t like the tone your mom used, it reminded you of the day she told you you’d have to pack your bags and leave your whole childhood behind.
What you discovered upon entering the room was far from everything you could expect.
A young man was standing there, strangely looking like…
Wait.
What?
Seo Changbin, in the flesh, was sitting on a chair next to your mom. Your dad was propped up against the counter.
“Look who’s here! Surprise!” Your mom’s excited voice, your dad’s big smile with a thumbs up and Changbin’s awkward stance… that was too much.
You mumbled about needing a shower and did just that. After about 30 minutes of washing yourself and overthinking, you came back to the kitchen where they were still talking, except it was almost time for dinner.
“Hi,” you greeted everyone. “Sorry about earlier, it was a shitty day.”
Your mom got up and hugged you. Her hugs always comforted you.
“I’m sorry bun, do you want to talk about it?”
“Not right now. I see that an old soul has joined us.”
Changbin got up. “Hey Y/N, how have you been?”
He wasn’t like you remembered. He looked like he spent the last decade at the gym. It was a nice view. Although you hoped he didn’t do it because you weren’t there anymore to protect him.
He seemed to hear your thoughts. “Ah, yeah, I work out a bit. I’ve become what you could call a gym rat.”
Shaking your head—were you staring???—, you cleared your throat. “I’m alright. How are you?”
“I’m good, thanks. I asked if I could stay for a few days, and your parents said yes. I hope you don’t mind?”
“It’s nothing Changbin-ah, you’re family!” your mom chimed in.
If I don’t mind? We haven’t seen each other in ten years and you’re appearing in the kitchen out of nowhere after I thought about you on my way back from work. But do I mind?
“I don’t. It’s nice to see you again.”
“Likewise.”
“I’m starving,” your dad said as he clapped his hands. “Who wants salad?”
“Dad, seriously?” You needed something more than a salad right now.
“Just kidding, your mom made Changbin’s favorite!”
Typical. You turned to your childhood best friend. “So, how are you here?”
“Turns out our parents still talk to each other, so when I said I wanted to come to this city, they arranged something for me.”
“When your mom told me I was so happy! We haven’t seen you in so long. I knew Y/N would be delighted to see you too. You’re welcomed in our home any time, always.”
He bowed to your mom. “Thanks, ms.”
“It's nothing! As I said before, we only have two rooms, so we put a mattress in Y/N’s bedroom. Are you both ok with that?”
Oh, I haven’t thought of that.
“Sure.”
“Yeah.”
“Oh, love,” your mom told her husband, “it reminds me of old times, when they were inseparable.” She turned to you and Changbin. “We always thought you’d end up together, especially with your silly—sorry, endearing—promise of marriage at 25, was it? That will be next year.”
Changbin looked lost while you were uncomfortable with the memory, putting your head in your hands. As classic parents, they enjoyed reminding you of your awkward past.

Changbin laid down on the thick mattress while you did the same on your comfortable bed. You stared at the ceiling, your hands crossed over your stomach.
“I see you’ve kept your promise.”
What? How could he even—
“You said you’ll always hang that OneRepublic poster. It hasn’t aged.”
Ah.
“But we did.”
He chuckled. “We did indeed. I came here for an appointment with a client tomorrow morning. And to surprise my girlfriend. What are the odds of her being in the same town as you?”
You felt your heart shatter at his words. Girlfriend.
“Why not go to her directly?”
There was a lump forming in your throat.
“And missing the chance to see you again? No, thank you. I didn’t forget about you Y/Nie, I’m sorry. I’m really glad I get to see you again and I genuinely would like for us to be friends again. It might not be like before, but we can work something out, what do you think?”
The silence was loud as he waited for an answer. He could’ve come to his girlfriend without seeing you and you would’ve never known he was here. But he chose to be here in your house. It had to mean something, right?
Finally, after gathering enough courage, you replied. “Yeah. We can be friends. Are you meeting her soon?”
“Cool,” he smiled. “Yeah, I’ll wait for her outside her house tomorrow, after work.”
“Uh, this is your plan? Waiting for her at her house is a bit creepy. Why don’t you ask her to go somewhere?”
“Ah, you’re right. I can send her a message to meet at a café or something.”
You nodded, even if he couldn’t see you clearly from the floor. “Tell her you have a surprise prepared for her.”
“Where should we go? Do you know any cute and romantic places?” he asked as he typed on his phone.
“Sure. There’s a super cute café a few blocks away, its name is Lovestay. I’m sure she’ll love it.”
What am I doing?
“Thanks Y/Nie, you’re the best.”
“Of course Binnie, I’m here for you. Always.”
“You know, about the promise of marriage… I honestly forgot about it. And since I have a girlfriend, the promise doesn’t stand anymore… right?”
You don’t know how you’re keeping your composure, because you have a strong desire to cry.
“No, it doesn’t. It was only if we were both single, and even so, that would be too weird with the circumstances.”
“I agree. I’m glad we’re on the same page.”
“Me too, Binnie.”
You spent most of the night catching up, recounting each other's anecdotes of your school years, explaining your respective jobs, spilling the latest tea. The more you talked, the less the situation overwhelmed you and the more you felt at ease.
Changbin became a music producer, with a flourishing soundcloud account. He was now a pillar at the gym, even giving tips to newbies. He loved his job. He loved his girlfriend. He was happy.
In contrast to you, he had his life together.
You hated your boss. You were single. You were still hung up on your childhood best friend. You were unhappy.
Seeing him had filled you with joy until you learned about his girl, and you were even helping him surprise her. What a loser.
The next day, he went to his appointment according to plan, then he came back for lunch happily. After that, he changed for his date and insisted on showing you his outfit. It was simple, yet complimenting him nicely.
“Do I look good enough?”
You look perfect.
“Yes, you look fine. Now go, it’s better if you’re there before her.”
“You’re right.” He was fidgeting nervously. “Can you come with me?”
You shook your head in disbelief, clearly judging him. “Are you out of your mind?”
“What?” he asked, surprised by your reaction.
“Who goes to see their girlfriend and brings another girl with them? Now, go.”
“Ah, you’re right.”
“You said that already,” you sighed, pushing him out of the house.
“Ok, I’m going. Wish me luck!”
“Good luck kid!” your dad shouted from the stairs.

He came back late that night. He told you all about it in detail. Details you did not wish to know about. But he seemed genuinely happy, which warmed your heart, instead of breaking it this time.
Your mom had asked you about your job, and you went on an angry rant about your boss, then Changbin and your feelings for him. First, she apologized for bringing him here without asking you first and, therefore, without knowing how you felt about him. Second, she cursed your boss out and told you to do whatever you felt comfortable doing. She would support you either way.
You thanked her and told her you would think about it, and that it was ok for Changbin to be here even if it felt weird.
You had spent the remainder of the day overthinking about your old friend and what he meant to you. After a thorough analysis, it struck you that the fact you kept the promise unconsciously made you turn down every possibility of a romance. You blamed the timing every time.
You also came to the conclusion it was perhaps more of a nostalgic, longing feeling than love. It wasn’t like you spent the last decade heartbreakingly waiting for him to return to you. You realized you had been missing your best friend, not your crush.
It was sunday morning, and you were slowly waking up.
The second you opened your eyes, you were met with Changbin’s wide opened ones looking at you. “You’re finally awake!”
“It’s an illusion,” you groaned, closing them again.
“I was thinking and I’d love for you to meet her! Please?”
“Who?”
Friendly reminder: you just woke up and were far from your daily eight hours of sleep.
“My girlfriend, you know, the love of my life.”
“Right. Sure. Is she ok with it though?”
“Of course, she actually asked for it.” You opened your eyes again, staring straight at him.
“She did?” He nodded. “Don’t tell me you talked about me yesterday?!”
He blatantly ignored your question. “She invited us to her place. Let’s get dressed and go!”
“Wait, right now?”
“Yeah, why?”
“It’s ten in the morning on a sunday, give me time to adjust.”
“You haven’t changed. Come on,” he got to his feet, “get up!”
You whined, holding your blanket tightly. “Give me five minutes.”
“Don’t make me put you out of your own bed.”
“Don’t you dare.” You put a finger up and frowned.
“I really want to, though,” he pouted.
“Do it and I’ll make sure you never see the light of day ever again,” you threatened.
“You can’t hurt me, I’m all buff now.”
He contracted his muscles and you laughed loudly. “I could still take you.”
“Try me.”
You smiled. “In five minutes.”
“Your five minutes were up two minutes ago.”
“You were counting?!”
“Well, yeah.”
You crossed your arms, pouting. “Fraud.”
“You’re a fraud,” he countered as he rolled his eyes playfully.
“Let me sleep!!”
“No.”
Twenty minutes later, you were out of the comfort of your house and walking alongside Changbin to see his girlfriend.
You were walking like a condemned woman while he was making little happy noises and jumping around.
It was definitely too early for you.
You took the bus for about fifteen minutes, then walked five more minutes. She lived in an apartment on the third floor, at least that was where Changbin was knocking.
A beautiful woman answered the door soon after. Long black hair, soft skin and features, a little bit shorter than your friend, cute smile.
For a moment, you stared at her without saying a word. You were in awe at how pretty she looked.
“Y/N,” Changbin called, clearing his throat, “I present you Serim, my girlfriend. Serim,” he turned to her, “this is Y/N, my childhood best friend.”
Snapping out of it, you raised your hand for her to shake but she hugged you instead. It took you and Changbin by surprise, the look you two shared confirmed it.
“Binnie talked about you so much, I was impatient to meet you!” She let go of you. “Sorry, I should've asked first,” she whispered, smiling sweetly at you. “Please, come in!”
She moved away for you to enter, which you did, Changbin following suit, an amused smile on.
“Do you want something to drink?” Serim asked after closing the door.
“Water would be nice, please.”
“Me too love,” Changbin said before getting closer to her and kissing her temple.
“Be right back, make yourself at home!” Serim grinned before disappearing into the kitchen.
You entered the living room and sat on the dark green couch, admiring the room. There were plants on either side of the soft and comfortable couch, a long and packed library on the side, a big tv screen in front with leds behind it and a collage of posters on the other side and all around the large door leading to the kitchen and entrance.
She came back soon after with the drinks, put them on the table then sat next to you. Changbin sat on the armchair next to her.
“Y/N, I’ve heard so much about you! I found out we were in the same town when I moved in three months ago. Binnie spent all this time organizing his trip.”
“Yeah, I had the chance to get the rendezvous yesterday,” he added.
“You were lucky," you nodded. "Serim, you have a lot of style by the way, I adore your living room.”
“Thank you! Changbin is actually no stranger to the decor, he helped with the posters.”
“Good job guys, it's so cool! So, how long have you been together?”
“Yesterday marked our first year together,” Changbin said, looking at his girl lovingly. She took his hand in hers and turned back to you.
“Of course, he didn't say a word. Thanks for contributing to the surprise, Y/N.”
“I'm glad I can be of any help.”
“You're an angel,” she said in all honesty.

Serim was an awesome girl, you were glad they found each other.
On monday morning, you quit your job and definitely left the building under the yelling of your boss—well, former boss.
Changbin was moving in with Serim soon after finishing preparing everything in his city. As a music producer, he could live basically anywhere but he had to move a lot.
You two were talking almost daily, and you were seeing Serim often as well. She gave you the idea of downloading a dating app, to ‘see how it goes’.
On thursday, you were going to a job interview at 3pm and to a date at 5pm.
Who knows what will happen next?

Heartbreak, despair. These are two words that you are unfortunately familiar with. The feeling of a thousand weights on your chest, crushing you, smothering you as your heart beats shattered and broken beneath all of the skin and sinew. Your head hasn’t felt clear in ages but instead feels fuzzy, as you go through each day as if on autopilot.
How does one get over heartbreak? Is it in the activities of your job? A day out with friends? Or maybe staring at yourself in the mirror night after night wondering what went wrong or why things never seem to work out for you.
You hate how much you give, how much you love, to those who don’t deserve it. How even after they have taken your heart and dragged it around in the mud you still give your all to them, hoping that they realize it was a mistake that everything will be fine and go on as normal.
You gave your heart to another person, went through the lies, the words, the expressions just to find out they did not want you anymore. All the years spent as a couple, a happy couple you thought, gone as if it never happened.
Your best friend thinks you should be over it by now, after all it’s been six months. How long does it take for you to get over someone? Apparently a long time. It’s not like you want to remain in the past, when you were happy with your partner, but there’s a disconnect between what your heart and mind wants and it’s just a confusing mess.
Scarlet, your best friend, is perched on your bed, swinging her legs back and forth as she examines her nails. She insisted on coming over to have an intervention with you, claiming it would be good for the soul.
“I don’t know why you won’t consider letting me set you up with Jake y/n, he’d be perfect for you,” she sighs as she watches you pace back and forth around your room.
You’ve been restless all night, the topic being love since she arrived. You love your best friend and understand she only wants to see you happy, but you’re not ready to date, to open your heart to another person.
Sighing you turned toward your friend and giving the most sympathetic look you said, “Scar, you know I’m not ready to get back out there. I’m still too…”
You paused for a moment considering what word would come out of your mouth next. What were you? Scared? Tired? Unhappy? Word after word floated through your brain, none of them seeming the right one to describe how you felt. However, the more you thought about it and the more Scarlet’s eyes focused on you, you came up with the perfect phrase. Fragile. Yes, you were still fragile, as delicate as a glass vase perched on the edge of a shelf, ready to fall at any moment and break into a million pieces.
“I’m still too fragile.”
Scarlet regarded you for a moment, taking in your disheveled look, the dark circles under your eyes, and how stressed you seemed. Her heart ached for you and she hated that you had gone through this, but she wanted to see you bubbly and happy again. She wants to see her happy go lucky friend.
“I know, but you need to start healing from this. Maybe you need to get away from it all. Go to a cabin or somewhere, breathe the fresh air and get a fresh start.”
A fresh start.
That sounded refreshing you couldn’t help but think as you turned to face your friend. She might be onto something. Getting away, just you and nature and solitude. Now that sounded perfect. You’ve always preferred solitude anyway.
“Yeah, I could go for that,” you said nodding.
You walked over and sat down next to Scarlet, grabbing your laptop to browse the internet. Luckily, you didn’t live far away from the mountains, the journey only being a short drive, so surely you’d be able to find a spot to retreat to for a while.
Many options popped up and you scrolled through all of them, asking Scarlet’s opinion on them and considering her feedback. However, none of the properties appealed to you as they were lacking the calmness and serenity you were seeking.
You were about to give up when a listing caused you to pause and look into it further. The home was beautiful, not too big but not too small that you’d feel like you were in a closet. It was located next to the lake, the waters glistening in the sun, seeming beautiful and smooth. The forest littered the background, the trees looming high above and inviting for you to come learn its secrets.
Deep down you felt like this was the place, the home you were meant to spend the summer at and heal. On the listing, there was a little bio about the owner, Hyunjin who seemed to be a five star host. That was good enough for you.
“I’m gonna book this place,” you told scarlet who scooted closer to peer over your shoulder at the screen.
“It looks beautiful and secluded, exactly what you need.”
You merely nodded agreeing with your friend. It is what you needed and deep within your heart you knew it was the right move to make. You looked at the dates available and as if it were fate, noticed it was open all summer. Selecting June to August and entering in your payment information, you pressed confirm, the confirmation page popping up shortly after.
It’s done.
You would spend a summer away, surrounded by nature and fresh air and the warm sun.
“Yay! It’s booked! Now let’s spend the rest of the night stuffing our faces with shit food and gossip until we pass out.”
You chuckled at your friend’s enthusiasm, grateful to have her in your life. She’s been there for you for years and helped you when your heart was freshly broken.
She came running when you called with the news, your eyes red and swollen from crying and snot running down your face.
“That son of a bitch, I’m going to kill them,” she exclaimed as she wiped your face, her eyes laced with concern. You recall how she tucked you in with a warm blanket and shoved a cup of tea in your hands and snuggled in next to you to just be there with you.
Now, you can’t help but smile as you watch her scramble around your room, setting the ambiance for the night, chatting away the whole time.
“So what are you looking forward to the most?” Scarlett asked as you both settled down, empty plates in front of you from dinner.
Thinking for a moment, you gazed out the window, taking in the skyline that you admired so much. “The solitude and peace, just knowing I’ll never see them again, especially in the middle of nowhere.”
Scarlet regarded your answer, letting out a soft hmm.
“You need this bestie. You need that spark back in your life. I know it’s been hard and I know you’re devastated about what happened, you definitely didn’t deserve it, but this will be the turning point. I can feel it in my bones.”
You smiled and gave your friend a hug, resting in the vanilla scent that you’ve come to grow used to. She’s right, it’s time to move on. Time to heal. You just hoped you will think the same when you’re by yourself for three months.
The time for your mini getaway arrived, quicker than expected, the warmth of spring giving way to the heat of summer. Your bags were packed and placed precariously by the front door, ready for when you’d need to leave later today.
You made sure your apartment was clean, everything put away for your absence. You’d miss the coziness of home, but you couldn’t back down…not now. Making sure you had everything you needed, you grabbed your bags and walked to your car. You were nervous. What if this didn’t work out? What if you’d have a breakdown in the middle of no where with no where to go?
Nervous thoughts continued to run through your mind as you slid into your car and turned the key, the car roaring to life.
“Here we go,” you murmured as you eased out of your parking space.
It would take you two hours to get there, the journey being a straight shot once on the interstate. You took small moments to admire the change in scenery, as it turned from overcrowded skyscrapers, to cozy suburban houses, to rolling country. It didn’t take long for the mountains to come into view, the peaks reaching high up as if it’s a beacon saying “I’m here, come journey within.”
You followed your gps, the robotic voice guiding you through twists and turns and wooded areas until the trees gave way to the lake. As you drove by, you couldn’t help but be in awe at the beauty of the body of water. The sun was shining down and casting sparkling rays, that it seemed as if the surface was glittering.
Turning onto a dirt road, you followed the path, your body slightly jostling as the tires rolled over the uneven road until a quaint house came into view, with a wrap around porch and a large welcome sign on the door.
“Wow,” you whispered taking in the abode, “this is something.”
Putting the car in park, you opened the door and got out, feet crunching on the gravel. As you made way to the trunk, the front door of the house opened, and a man walked out with a huge grin on his face.
You watched cautiously, ready to go into fight or flight mode, but was drawn at the looks of the man. He was beautiful, you couldn’t help but think his long, jet black hair that he had in a half up half down style perched gently at the nape of his neck. He was wearing a button down shirt that framed his toned arms and jeans that seemed a little fancy for the atmosphere he was in.
You’re not sure who he was as no where on the listing did it say “comes with a hot guy.” Fixing your face from a concerned look to a soft smile, you stood still as the stranger approached you.
“Y/n?” He asked, tilting his head to the side.
“That’s me.”
“Great! I’m Hyunjin the owner of this house. I’ll be helping out and dropping by to make sure your stay is nothing but wonderful. Can I help you with your bags?”
Hyunjin seemed chipper, too eager as if he was trying to make a good impression. And you guess he was since you’d wind up rating him at the end of your stay. Gesturing for him to go ahead, you watched as he lifted your suitcase out of the trunk, your eyes drifting down to his arms as they flexed with each movement.
He set the bag down and took a deep breath before letting it out. “Follow me.”
You nodded and followed him towards the house, your suitcase making a raucous as the wheels rolled over the gravel. As you stepped into the entrance way, you were taken aback by the home, the space seeming more cozy and beautifully decorated than the pictures showed.
The air conditioner was on full blast, the cool air wrapping around you in a cold embrace, cooling you off from the heat from outside. There was a sweet scent drifting through the air, a mixture of vanilla and chocolate that instantly made your mouth water. There were ceiling to floor windows on the far end, the forest visible but in a nonthreatening way. You wondered if you’d still have that thought later tonight.
“So this is the main area and to our right is the bedroom you’ll be staying in.”
Hyunjin walked to a door on the right, flipping the light switch on to illuminate the room. It was a truly beautiful room, the bed seeming very soft and comfy with the various blankets placed carefully on the bed. There was a nice sitting area in the corner of the room, and you could see yourself enjoying a peaceful afternoon there reading or sketching.
There was an in suite bathroom that was surprisingly not as elaborate as the other rooms, but still seemed nice enough.
Hyunjin rolled your bag to a corner and turned to face you. “There’s fresh baked cookies in the kitchen. Why don’t you join me for a snack and then we can chat about your stay.”
You knew you smelled something delicious and you weren’t let down. Cookies sounded great after traveling. You eagerly followed him to the kitchen, taking a seat in the chair that he offered you. Your eyes trailed behind him as he grabbed a plate and set two cookies down on them and placed it in front of you with a smile. He grabbed his own serving and sat across from you, his tongue dashing out to lick his lips as he stared at the warm cookie.
The first bite almost sent you to heaven, the gooey chocolate and soft dough melting on your tongue as the flavor of vanilla exploded on your tastebuds.
“These are amazing,” you moaned between bites.
“Thank you, I made them myself,” Hyunjin said proudly.
You noticed the dimples that appeared as he smiled, making him seem like a little kid. He truly was a beautiful man. Your mind began to wander, wondering how it’ll be to be in his company, but you were interrupted from your reverie by Hyunjin clearing his throat, a smirk on his face as if he knew what you were just thinking about.
“Oh wow, that’s impressive,” you said earnestly as you took another bite of your cookie.
“I cook, clean, and just make sure the grounds and house are up to standard. I would love to continue to do so during your stay if you don’t mind.”
Someone else doing the cooking and cleaning? Yes please. Who would you be to deny that?
“Of course, do whatever you have to.”
“Great! Well i have a key so I’ll be in in the mornings and then afternoons for breakfast and dinner. So don’t be alarmed if you hear someone moving around.”
You nodded, grateful for the warning because the first thing you’d think of if you heard something is an intruder.
“So what do you recommend for activities around here?” You might as well inquire about it since he was here. He seemed more than willing to share.
“Well there’s hiking. There are three trails you can explore. And the lake. It’s perfect for a dip after being in the hot sun or canoeing. There’s a little summer festival in town toward the end of summer. The house has a hot tub too, that’s around back and it’s open 24/7.”
There was definitely a lot to do and you’re sure you’d find more as the days went on. You honestly couldn’t wait to explore, to see what was beyond the trees, to breathe the fresh air and bask in the sun.
“Awesome, thank you Hyunjin.”
Hyunjin hummed in response, his eyes locked on you as if he was sizing you up. He kept his eyes on yours and at first it was fine but as minutes passed, you started to feel a little uncomfortable.
“So…uh, I guess I’ll get settled and if I need you, what’s the best way to get in touch?”
“Oh! Just text or call me. Here’s my number,” he said as he scribbled his number on a piece of a napkin.
You slid it closer to you and input the number in your phone. “Perfect thanks.”
“Of course and if you need anything just let me know. Have a good rest of the day y/n.”
Hyunjin got up and disposed of his trash and then let himself out, the front door closing with a soft click. You looked around and took in what would be your home for the next two months. It was quiet, with the occasional insects calling from outside. It was peaceful which is just what you needed.
Since it was getting darker, you decided to stay inside and unpack. The sunset was filtering in through the windows with vibrant shades of red, orange, and purple. Turning on your favorite playlist, you started putting things away. You explored a little as well, opening up drawers and glancing at pictures that were on display. You couldn’t help but admire the beauty as you’re sure these were photos of the mountains right outside your window.
After, you walked to the kitchen in search of food, after all that unpacking caused you to work up an appetite. But then you stopped in your tracks, remembering that you had no food besides the treats from earlier. You hoped that Hyunjin had left something in the fridge that you could easily cook up.
Opening up the fridge, you were greeted with the sight of a platter of meats and cheeses with a note placed on top of the plate explaining where the bread was for sandwiches. This little meal was okay with you. It was something easy and quick and still tasty.
You quickly made your sandwiches and brought the plate to the table and immediately began to dig in. The food was definitely hitting the spot, your hunger slowly ebbing away as you filled your stomach.
Once you were finished eating you took care of your plate and decided to shower, wanting to get an early night in after your travels today. The warm water felt amazing on your skin as the grim of the day washed down the drain. You lathered your body with your favorite body wash, the scent of strawberries wrapping around you in a soft embrace.
Getting out of the shower was not as fun as the cold hit your skin causing you to shiver. Cursing, you hurriedly dried yourself off and slipped into your warm pajamas.
Sliding under the plush covers was an experience of its own, the blankets slightly heavy to cradle you to sleep and soft to the touch making you melt instantly. You were out before you could count to ten, exhaustion taking over quickly. Your first day wasn’t so bad and Hyunjin seemed nice enough and your heart felt hope for the first time in a long time. -- — Hyunjin made his way home, his cabin not too far from the main house. His eyes focused on the road as the sky steadily became darker, the sun retiring and stars becoming brighter, but his mind was on you, his new tenant.
He rarely had single guests, most people visiting were couples or groups of friends wanting to experience nature but they end up being a nuisance instead. You seemed nice enough, shy and quiet, but friendly.
You had a melancholy aura around your figure, your body slightly haunched over and eyes filled with things you probably didn’t want to experience. He wonders why you came all the way out here, away from the city based upon the address you provided when you booked his place.
You had a story and a not so nice one at that. He could tell in your words, slow and drawn out as if it’s almost too tiring to speak and your voice as it barely rang out in the large space you two occupied briefly. He’s curious of that story, but that’s not his job.
All he can do is focus on making sure your stay is as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
You were able to sleep undisturbed for the first time in months, your eyes closing at the touch of your cheek on the soft pillow, your body tucked under the soft blankets. You were in shock at the fact as you laid in bed the following morning, rays of sunlight streaming through the windows alerting you that a new day has begun. You grabbed your phone and checked for messages, responding to the handful you received from Scarlet. You reassured her everything was fine, you slept well, and that the place was just as beautiful as in the photos. She seemed satisfied at your responses so you set your phone down and got up.
The bathroom was spacious and added to your morning routine, the water seeming extra crisp as it splashed against your face, your reflection in the mirror seeming even more appealing in the early morning hours which was never the case back home. Quickly, you brushed your hair and then threw on a pair of leggings and a loose shirt and padded to the kitchen.
You were in desperate need of coffee to help you fully face this day ahead. The coffee pot was placed conveniently on the counter with coffee grounds next to it. You set into the familiar feel of measuring out the grounds, one tablespoon to every eight ounces of water. Humming a little song, you pressed the power button and sounds of the gears coming to life filled the small space with the promise of a warm beverage in the near future.
Grabbing a mug, you poured some creamer in as you took a deep breath allowing the aroma of the coffee to penetrate your senses. You filled your cup with the steaming liquid and carried it to the porch, deciding to enjoy the early morning hours comfortably before the heat took over.
It was a beautiful day, the crisp morning air light as a gentle breeze came through tickling your skin. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath, recognizing the scent of the pine trees and flowers that were nearby. If you focused hard enough, you could also smell the water, something soft and slightly sweet drifting through your nostrils.
Animals scurried about, completing their morning rituals before the heat of the day arrived. Your ears were filled with the various chirps of birds and the rustle of leaves, a mellow cacophony of sounds that put you at ease. Sip after sip, your coffee disappeared as you glanced around, taking in your surroundings and enjoying the peace and quiet, that is until you heard a bunch of branches snap as if a foot came down on the flimsy wood.
Hyunjin rounded the corner, dressed in sweats and a white t-shirt, and his hair pulled back. He smiled when he noticed you, his direction changing as he walked up to the porch.
“Morning y/n! Sleep well?”
You smiled in return, his cheery personality contagious on this warm, sunny morning. “Morning. I did, better than I have in a long time.”
“That’s good to hear,” Hyunjin hummed as he took a seat next to you. “I see you found the coffee pot.”
You merely nodded as you glanced down at your near empty cup. You wouldn’t mind having a second cup and wonder if you should offer some to Hyunjin. Looking up, your eyes met Hyunjin’s, his brown orbs trained on yours as he waited for you to speak.
“I’m going to grab another cup. Would you like one?” You asked as you got up and dusted the back of your pants with your free hand.
“Sure, Id love that. Just black is fine.”
Disappearing through the door, you left Hyunjin on the porch. He wouldn’t mind. After all, you are bringing him back a cup of coffee. You poured yours and then grabbed another cup for him and filled it to the brim. Once back outside, Hyunjin graciously accepted the cup and took a sip as he glanced out at the lake that spread out before you two.
Hyunjin loves mornings out here, breathing in the cool, morning air, embracing the slight chill that prickles the skin, not enough to bundle up but enough to make the little hairs stick up on your arms. He loves the gentle lapping of the water along the shore and the occasional splash as a fish comes up to the surface as if it’s saying hello.
He sips more of his coffee, savoring the nutty taste of the blend, as you both remain quiet observing the view. You seem slightly more refreshed, yet still reserved, like something is on your mind.
He can’t help but turn to look at you, to take in how the sun is reflecting off your eyes causing them to shine and your long hair gently floating as a breeze passes through. He continues to stare until you realize his gaze is on you and you turn to look at him in turn. Hyunjin panics and scrambles for a way to ease the awkwardness.
“So what do you do for work?” He blurts out, silently cursing at such a cliche question.
You look at the man next to you, his face turning redder by the moment as he’s caught in his folly, and ponder his question. It’s a simple question really, one that you should be able to answer. However, a part of you is hesitant, cautious, not wanting to peel yourself back for this person. But, you’re being ridiculous, it’s just your job, so you say, “I work as a secretary at a law firm.”
Hyunjin nods, impressed by your answer. You take another sip of coffee, and then another and another until you drain the cup. Not sure what to do now, you sigh and then make to get up before Hyunjin stops you.
“Wait! Before you go, I was wondering if you’d like to go hiking with me? I can show you around the grounds, and maybe even teach you a thing or two.”
A hike? You haven’t hiked in ages, preferring to stay indoors if possible. But you can’t say no, not with how he’s staring at you with hope in his eyes, the curiosity burning within them to spend more time with you, pick you apart. You simply nod and reach for his cup, walking inside to set them in the sink before coming back outside.
“Let’s start over here. This trail is relatively easy and has some great views of the area.”
You nod and follow him, the leaves and dirt crunching under your feet as you take a step and then another and another. Your heart rate begins to increase, the blood working to pump throughout your body causing you to flush. Your breathing becomes more labored, but you try to control it not wanting to appear out of shape in front of this definitely fit man.
“So um, what brought you out here?” Hyunjin asks as he slows down to wait for you.
Taking a deep breath you let it out, your chest burning as your lungs inflate trying to gather oxygen. “Just needed to get away,” you murmur, as you focus on the ground trying not to trip over the many rocks scattered throughout.
You say nothing else which shocks Hyunjin. Was he out of line? He didn’t mean to make you feel cornered and him seem nosy. He was just making small talk, which seems like a no go for you. Instead of following up with another question, he walks on, his sight straight ahead.
You’re miserable. Your legs hurt, you can’t breath and you’re starting to sweat profusely, your body not used to this type of what you call vigorous exercise. You are walking up a mini hill now as you both make your way up the mountain, trees closing in on either side of you, with an occasional peak of the lake below.
Your mind is elsewhere and you try to distract yourself from this situation until you hear a huff and a thud. Stopping in your tracks, you stare startled at Hyunjin who is now on the ground on hands and knees completely still.
“Hyunjin! Are you okay?” You shout as you run to his side to help him up.
“Yep, yep…just uh…just tripped over a rock is all.”
Hyunjin stands up and begins to dust himself off, his face a brilliant shade of red. You can’t believe it, but this nature master has tripped over a tiny rock, the culprit a few feet away from where his foot made contact. You smirk and cover your mouth, trying not to laugh. However, one look at Hyunjin’s face and you lost it. You double over in laughter, the soreness of your body and fatigue long forgotten.
“Hey now! It’s not funny!” Hyunjin whines and crosses his arms as he pouts.
He looks adorable, like a child that didn’t get their way. Wiping the stray tears that have fallen from your eyes, you reach out to place a hand on his shoulder. “You’re right it’s not…it’s hilarious.”
Hyunjin huffs and mumbles something under his breath before turning away to continue walking up the trail. You follow close behind, feeling slightly more energetic after that little mishap. The gaps between the trees were widening and the sun filtered through the further you both walked. Before you knew it, you arrived at a rock that was blocking the path.
“We’re here,” Hyunjin said as he gazed at the top of the structure.
You stared at him giving him a look of confusion. Maybe that fall caused him to lose it because all you can see is a large rock in front of you. However, you didn’t have to wonder for long what Hyunjin meant.
“Well, let’s start climbing. Shouldn’t take long.”
“Wait…climb? We’re climbing that thing?!”
You stared at Hyunjin dumbfounded. There was no way in hell you’d be able to climb that. But Hyunjin began the process, placing one hand on a ledge and hoisted himself up. He slowly but skillfully climbed the mountain, his effort making the whole process seem easy. Not wanting to be left behind, you sighed and approached the rock.
Placing a hand on one of the ledges, you began the ascent, the pull on your muscles causing sharp pains to travel throughout your body. Despite your body protesting against your actions, you continued to climb, coaching yourself silently ‘right hand, left foot, left hand, right foot’ over and over until you reached the top.
Hyunjin was already there and helped pull you up, your limbs touching solid ground at last. Your breath was coming in short bursts, your arms aching and legs tingling.
“Come on y/n, come look at this.”
Taking a deep breath you stood up and dusting your hands before making your way to where hyunjin was standing. As you approached, you could understand why he wanted to make the climb. The scene was breathtaking, the valley below spread for as far as the eyes could see. The lake with its blue waters was huge, completing the scene straight out of a postcard. You couldn’t help but stare in awe at the beauty.
A feeling of peace rushed through your body, the pain that was ever present before slowly dissipating. You briefly closed your eyes and breathed in deeply, feeling the rush of air in your nostrils, letting it fill your lungs before letting it out, your eyes slowly opening to gaze at the scene before you.
Hyunjin watched you, softly smiling at how at peace you looked; a look that was so different from your expression when he first laid eyes on you. He felt a warmness towards you. Yes, you seemed quiet and reserved, but in this moment, Hyunjin feels he was able to see into your soul and a little bit of what plagued your beautiful mind escape and float away.
You both stayed there, standing side by side in silence, gazing at the scenery before you. The birds twittered and flew around, the sun continued to shine, and a soft breeze wrapped its tendrils around you both, cooling you off after the hike. The moment was serene, that is until it was interrupted by Hyunjin’s voice.
“Let’s head back.”
You nodded and turned around to go back where you started and began the descent, which seemed much easier than the way up. Hyunjin guided you down the trail chattering away about the lore of the forest and how it’s filled with everything you needed for survival. He seemed very knowledgeable about it which you were grateful for because you didn’t know one iota about the forest.
Once back at the house, he left you at the front steps, thanking you for accompanying him. You really had fun now that you could look back at your journey. Hopefully he’d take you hiking again soon.
“I’ll see you tomorrow?” Hyunjin sheepishly asked before adding, “If that’s okay.”
You grinned at the correction, finding it cute. Wait? Why did you find that cute? He’s just asking you a question. Wiping the smile off of your face you gave him a fixed look before simply nodding your consent. He cocked his head at your response, slight confusion on his face. He seemed like he wanted to say something about your sudden change in demeanor but decided against it because he slightly bowed and then walked off.
You watched him leave before going into the house, your body screaming for a shower. Quickly, you gathered your shower supplies and stepped under the warm stream of water, letting the jets soothe your aching muscles. You thought back to the hike, to how Hyunjin didn’t mind that it took you forever to catch up to him. How he filled the space with chatter, his gentle voice waking something in you that honestly left you terrified. He’s just your host and it needs to stay like that.
Coming to that resolve, you continued your shower quickly. After drying off, you slipped into some comfy sweats and a t-shirt and plopped down on the bed, letting out a content sigh. You closed your eyes for a quick rest, but within moments you were out, your mind and body exhausted from today’s activities. Despite the early hours, you slumbered peacefully dreaming of fields and flowers and a handsome man. A man that seemed to look an awfully lot like Hyunjin.
The days passed, many of them spent in Hyunjin’s company. You went on a few more hikes, venturing out to the more advanced trails each time. Surprisingly, you were able to keep up, your stamina building with all of the walking you were doing. Hyunjin taught you all about the arbor life in the area, pointing out which trees are which and explaining the different patterns of the bark of the tree to help you in your identification.
Most people would find that boring, you included, however listening to Hyunjin talk about things he loves is a sight you are so happy you have been blessed to see. His eyes sparkle brightly, illuminating his beautiful face as he gestures wildly with his hands, speaking so fast you have to beg him to slow down occasionally. The resultant giggle and ‘sorry’ that comes out of his mouth is so cute, as his cheeks heat up to a brilliant shade of pink and he bites his plush lips that look delicious.
You’ve grown used to his presence, expecting him to show up at the house after breakfast. You’re starting not to mind the company, feeling a stirring inside that you choose to not acknowledge, not wanting to face what it means.
It’s a cloudy day, the sky darkening by the minute and seeming ominous. You notice the trees swaying back and force through the window as you sip on a cup of coffee. The air feels thick and sticks to your skin making you feel sticky instantly. You are starting to feel worried that a storm may be coming in.
You close your eyes and take a deep breath, trying to calm your anxiety that is prickling at the edges of your mind. You breathe in and out slowly again and again until there’s a loud knock on your door, followed by a deep voice calling out to you.
Hyunjin.
You turn to see him bounding into the room, his hands full of bags filled with food. “Hey y/n! A storm is coming in so I brought you some groceries just in case.”
“Thanks…wait, just in case?” You inquire. Why would there need to be a just in case?
“Yeah, the storms can get pretty bad up here and so it’s always good to be prepared.”
You swallowed the lump in your throat as Hyunjin confirmed your worse nightmare. “Oh…right,” you mumble as you try to hide your fear.
Hyunjin is chatting away about the weather as he puts your food away, filling the once silent space with sound in which you’re grateful. You hurry to close all the windows as the wind picks up and the sky grows ever more darker. As you latch the last window, the sky opens up and fat rain drops pound against the glass accompanied by thunder that shakes the frame of the house.
You quickly step away from the glass, backing away slowly as your breath comes in short pants. Your vision becomes blurry and you float to a different time and place, one where you were with ‘him.’
flashback Theo I’m scared…” you stood in the center of the room, frozen in place as your body trembles. A storm was raging outside and you were terrified of the sounds and the rapid lightning.
Your boyfriend Theo was sitting on the couch, tapping away on his controller ignoring you like you weren’t even there.
”Theo?” You whimpered, walking closer to the couch. Suddenly he threw his headset to the ground and stood up to face you catching you off guard. You took a step back as you were scared at what he would do or say next.
”Y/N, you are such a scared piece of chicken shit. What are you, five? It’s just a storm get over it and let me play my game.”
You watched as he sat back down and put his headset back on, complaining to the guys on the other end that his girlfriend was having another tantrum. You felt hurt inside and still scared, not knowing what to do as the storm raged on. Instead you opted to sit down in a corner, drawing your knees to your chest as tears fell down your face. ‘It’ll be okay, it’ll be okay,’ you repeated over and over until…
“Y/n? Hey you okay?”
You startle out of your reverie at the feel of Hyunjin’s hand on your shoulder. His face is laced with concern as he stares at you to make sure you’re okay.
“Um, yeah, I’m fine…just uh…remembered something. A memory.”
Hyunjin nods at your answer and drops his hand. “Wanna talk about it?”
You merely shake your head no and set the cup down that you were holding. Hyunjin continues to stare, confused as to what happened. He can tell you were elsewhere, somewhere in your past. Your expression was melancholic but you were trembling as if you were scared. He finds himself becoming more curious about you by the day.
At that moment, another rumble of thunder occurred and you let out a yelp, clasping your hands over your mouth in surprise. It was almost like a lightbulb went off over his head.
“You’re scared of storms,” he says matter of factly, happy that he put it together.
You hesitated for a moment but eventually mumbled a yes. “Sorry, I know it’s childish.”
“What do you mean? No it’s not. We all have something we’re scared of.”
You looked up at his statement, shocked that he wasn’t going to berate you for your fears. However, he is right. You wonder what Hyunjin’s fear is?
“How about I stay here with you during the storm…like a mini sleepover that lasts a few days,” he chuckles. “We can start by making dinner?”
You accept his offer without any hesitation, feeling safe whenever he is around. You are shocked by that revelation and a little scared as your heart is starting to lead you to dangerous territory. However, you don’t have long to ponder as Hyunjin beckons you to the kitchen.
He begins to pull out ingredients after playing some music. He hands you a chopping board and a few bell peppers. “Wanna chop these up?”
You nod and take the items and get to work, falling easily into the routine of cooking. It’s a fun affair as you both dance your way through the space, bumping into each other occasionally. Hyunjin belts out the tune that’s playing, very off key but with a smile on his face the whole time. At one point he drops what he is holding and grasps your hands just to spin you around the kitchen.
At first you were shocked but slowly you find yourself begin to smile until your laughter bubbles up and out. It’s a refreshing sound, one you almost forgot how it sounded. You fully embrace the moment and twirl around, spurred on by Hyunjin’s chants.
You grow dizzy though and soon have to stop and gratefully accept the glass of water that Hyunjin hands you. He smiles and then gets back to work, checking the pots on the stove while you finish your drink. You both work in harmony, working in haste to finish the food. Your belly is rumbling at the smell of the chicken dish and you try to sneak a bite while he’s not looking.
However, he spins around at the last second and catches you with the fork halfway to your mouth. “Y/n! No taste testing, it’s almost done!”
You giggle and shove the chicken in your mouth anyway, savoring the juicy flavor. Hyunjin merely pouts and grabs some plates and you hurry over to help him. Once your table of two is set, you both sit down with your meal and begin to eat, listening to the storm that is still going on outside. You find that you don’t even care anymore, feeling safe and less anxious around Hyunjin.
He engages you in chatter, something you find is easy to do with him. The words and drink flow and it becomes darker outside, as night knocks on the door to take over. Hyunjin gathers the dirty dishes and admonishes you as you attempt to help. You try to gather the dishes, but he threatens to tickle you instead and you give up instantly.
“Let’s watch a movie,” Hyunjin suggests once he’s done cleaning. He plops down on the couch and pats the space next to him.
You nervously sit down, placing your hands in your lap. Hyunjin throws a blanket over both of you and grabs the remote, his focus on picking the perfect movie. It’s thirty minute affair, but a movie is picked, a romantic comedy that you are shocked he agreed to watch.
He acts offended and gasps as he clutches his chest. “How dare you?! I am a huge fan of romantic comedies. I will not cry…nope not once during the movie.”
You chuckled, somehow doubting his statement. You’d have to keep a look out for the tear factory. The movie begins and you both focus your attention on the screen. You feel yourself melting into Hyunjin’s side, chasing his warmth and comfort as you continue to eye the window.
You try to focus on what’s going on in front of you, but your attention is easily diverted to outside, watching the flashes of lightning light up the dark sky. Hyunjin notices you, notices how you twitch under the blanket, how your eyes dart to the window, how you bite your lip over and over. He reaches out a hand and places it gently on your knee.
You look at the hand, taking in the rings that litter each finger and then drag your gaze to Hyunjin’s face. There is something there, etched onto his handsome face, a look you can’t quite place.
“It’s okay, I’m here,” he whispers and you don’t have to question further what he meant.
He’s so much different than your ex. Hyunjin is gentle, kind, considerate of your feelings. He makes you feel safe and wanted. Even now your heart beats wildly within your chest and butterflies tumble in your belly causing you to blush furiously. Cautiously, you reach a hand up to his face, making contact with his soft skin.
You feel his breath on your wrist, nice and warm just like his soul. He gazes into your eyes, searching for your story, what makes you who you are. You keep it safe and locked up, deep in your psyche where no one can touch it, unpeel it, study it. Your eyes stare into his and then travel to his lips as you wonder how they would feel on yours.
Hyunjin seems to be able to read your mind because he gently grasps your face and leans forward, slowly until you can feel his breath blow across your face. You hear him swallow and then mumble something so deep, the words only come out as a rumble within his chest. You are about to lean away, your mind catching you slowly but surely to what your heart wants when he presses his lips against yours and holds them there.
He doesn’t move but holds your face against his before he leans away slightly. ‘Now’ you think but Hyunjin kisses you again and again in a soft and sweet manner. He shuffles closer to you and lightly strokes your face, marveling at how you feel against him. You feel your heart rate increase, the constant thump thump echoing in your ears.
It’s too much, it’s too gentle. You’re not ready for that yet, to be worshipped and treated as if you were the most precious jewel on the planet. Your breath comes in short pants, your hands become clammy. Hyunjin doesn’t catch the hint, but instead continues to press his plush lips to yours as if he’s memorizing how you feel.
You quickly grasp his shirt in your hands and bunch it up tightly and deepen the kiss, taking Hyunjin by surprise. He doesn’t stop but instead matches your fervor, devoting you whole as your lips clash together. You shove your tongue into his mouth and he lets out a moan, his hands reaching for your waist to pull you on top of him.
You are quick to grind your core over his bulge, savoring how his covered length feels against you. It isn’t long until you are desperate, wanting to feel him inside. Your hands drift to his pants and you attempt to free his cock but he stops you with a grasp on your wrist.
“Wait, we should do this right don’t you think?”
He goes to lay you on your back, but you quickly scramble to a seated position. “No, not that way…” Hyunjin stares at you in confusion, but decides to let it go as he’s just as desperate as you are.
He quickly rids himself of his clothes and you follow suite before getting on your hands and knees. You gaze out of the windows into the darkness, holding your breath as Hyunjin breaches your entrance, slowly pushing in until he’s flushed against your ass. He stills for a moment to allow you to adjust, but you feel your anxiety mounting inside your chest. “Move,” you command before adding “hard.”
Hyunjin is shocked, not sure if he should comply, but he’s quick to withdraw his cock just to slam into you as you command him to move again. He sets a rapid pace, causing you to groan out. You are reveling in the feel of his cock brushing your walls, his thick cock spreading you open with each thrust. The pain feels so good, reminding you of what you are, who you are.
“Touch my clit,” you pant out, letting out a moan as he immediately complies, swirling his finger around the bud over and over.
You listen to how he takes you, how his moans ring in your ears, drowning out the rain that hits the windows, or the thunder that rumbles. You can tell he’s close and your grateful, not wanting to think about the fact that he was a good fuck, no not good but incredible even. No, you’re not allowed to go there, to jump off the deep end and enjoy everything this man offers to give you.
But you will enjoy how he touches you, fucks you, brings you to climax in record speed. You whimper as your orgasm spreads through you in waves and you clench down on Hyunjin’s cock over and over again, trying to keep him inside. It’s too much for him and he comes a few thrusts later, filling you up with his hot cum causing you to shudder at the feeling.
You lay down as Hyunjin catches his breath above you. You focus on breathing in and out, in and out as he leaves to fetch a towel to clean you up. Hyunjin helps you up once you’re clean and cradles you to his chest, rubbing gentle circles on your back. You feel yourself slipping, deeper and deeper into the abyss, a place you vowed to never go to again, in fear of being hurt.
However, as you listen to Hyunjin’s heart beat, and feel his warmth seep into your naked body, you can’t help but succumb to the feeling within; that feeling that you are safe and you will be okay, if only Hyunjin can stay by your side. -- — Hyunjin startles awake and stares at the ceiling, one he isn’t accustomed to seeing. It takes a moment for him to realize he’s not at home and that there’s a body tucked into his side. He realizes he’s at the guest house and that you’re here with him. It dawns on him that you’re both naked, bodies pressed together and sharing warmth.
He can’t help but look down at your sleeping face which is etched with an impression he can’t quite make out. Your hand rests gently on his belly, your chest rises and falls slowly, steadily signaling that you’re in deep sleep. He can’t help but stare at your breasts, how perfect they are. He shifts a little and your nipple brushes ever so lightly against his side and puckers, causing him to bite his lip.
Hyunjin breathes in deeply and lets out his breath, calming himself down so he doesn’t seem like a horn dog. Instead, he stares out the window, seeing that morning is coming, the light getting brighter with each passing moment. Soft drizzle litters the glass with an occasional rumble of thunder and he feels himself becoming drowsy, sleep threatening to take over once more.
He holds you closer and pulls the blanket over your body and places a soft kiss to the top of your head. You don’t stir or make a sound, as you're still wrapped up in whatever dream is dancing across your mind. Hyunjin closes his eyes and relaxes, thanking his lucky stars that your path has crossed his.
You awake to the sound of sizzling and the scent of bacon. You sit up and rub your eyes, adjusting to your surroundings. The rain is pattering against the windows and it’s gray and dismal outside. You can hear Hyunjin whistling a tune as he cooks completely unaware that you’re awake.
It’s the perfect opportunity to sneak away to the bathroom and you do so, wrapping the blanket around you. The warm water feels good on your body as your sore, particularly in an area you haven’t been in quite a while. The feel of his cock is etched into your brain and the way he stretched you out perfectly.
A thought comes to the forefront of your mind and you shiver despite the warmth of the water caressing your skin. You like Hyunjin. You’re completely thrown off, confused and scared. You don’t want to open your heart and let him into the little crevices that have appeared over the years.
But this trip is also supposed to be a break from reality and lending your heart to him is exactly that right? As you stand there in the large shower, you come to a decision that you’d just enjoy yourself and let consequences be bygones.
After your shower, you dress in cozy clothes and pad to the kitchen. Hyunjin greets you with a smile and sets down a plate of food on the table.
“Breakfast is served!” He says in a sing song voice.
You chuckle and sit down and immediately dig in as you’re starving. Hyunjin joins you and you both eat in silence listening to the rain instead. You don’t look at the man in front of you but keep your gaze down on your plate. So when Hyunjin speaks, you're briefly startled.
“So wanna take it easy today? I mean…not that we have a choice,” he adds after considering what he said.
“I think that sounds perfect,” you respond, shoving another piece of pancake in your mouth.
“Excellent, let the rest of the sleep over commence!”
Hyunjin jumps up and cleans away the dishes and makes his way to the living area and turns the tv on. He sits on the floor and beckons you over once you’re down eating.
You decide to do a little reading so you grab your book and plop down in front of him and lean back against his chest. His body feels amazing behind you, warm and hard and perfect. You’re aware of how his breath fans across your neck, his giggles as he sees something funny on the screen.
You feel warmth in your core and your arousal trickle slowly out of your pussy, causing you to clench your thighs. Your eyes remain on your book, but you can’t comprehend anything as you’re preoccupied with the man behind you.
You hear a grunt and you almost turn around when Hyunjin murmurs “don’t,” low in your ear. You gasp and hold your breath as he drifts his lips across your ear and down to your neck. It isn’t long until he’s pressing wet kisses along your skin. His hands drift to your thighs and he holds them there, teasing you slowly, carefully until you mewl in desperation, wanting him to touch you more where you want him the most.
“Patience,” he hums in your ear again as if he can read your mind.
You tremble as he drags his fingers higher and higher until he reaches your waistband and slips his thumb inside. He slowly dips his hand further within the fabric until his long and nimble fingers reach your panties where he plays with the little bow that adorns the front of the fabric.
His breath is heavy and his cock hard as he presses you slightly into him, giving him the friction he craves. You adjust yourself slightly, your book slipping through your fingers when he tuts and picks the book up.
“Keep reading, don’t let me stop you.”
You attempt to read the words on the page but they blur together and you can’t focus. His hands slip into your panties and he runs his fingers through your wet folds and circles a digit around your clit, teasing, pitching until you’re panting, your chest rising rapidly as the pleasure takes over. Hyunjin is guiding you through it, whispering words of praise into your ear, accompanied by the occasional groan as he’s affected by your voice, echoing throughout the room.
Your slick coats his fingers, aiding in his ministrations and he lets out a hiss as his fingers slip causing you to whine at the mishap. He’s quick to find your clit again and begins to apply more pressure and circle his finger faster. You toss your head back onto Hyunjin’s shoulder, your book long forgotten as you chase that feeling that is beginning to spread, seeping into the very fiber of your being.
There’s a thud, as the book falls onto the floor and your hands grip his arms and you squeeze, so hard that Hyunjin lets out a groan as his head falls onto your shoulder. His breath is hot on your skin and you feel his teeth graze the area until he bites down, his teeth forming small craters in the otherwise smooth area.
The pain shoots through your body and mingles with the pleasure you’re feeling and you clench down, wishing for his cock inside you, stretching your pussy wide and making you feel full. He brings his other hand up and wraps his lithe fingers around your throat, squeezing ever so slightly that causes you to gasp.
His voice is gruff in your ears as he mumbles, praising you, teasing you, calling you a good girl, begging you to come, to flood his fingers with your arousal. You want to, let go and succumb to the pleasure that he’s giving you, but you need more, an extra push to get you over the edge that you desperately need. Hyunjin senses this, can tell you’re begging for something as he stares at your lips.
“Harder,” they seem to say and he chuckles as he tightens his hold around your neck all the while continuing to play with your clit. The sound of how turned on you are forms a symphony with your moans as they become more high pitch with each passing second.
You’re there, right on the cusp. You feel the oxygen slowly being cut off from your lungs, your brain feeling fuzzy and the room slightly spinning in front of you. The coil rapidly builds, tightens until it snaps and explodes with white hot pleasure that travels through your body and causes your toes to curl. Your vision goes dark for a moment and a high pitch buzz is echoing in your ears.
Seconds later, you hear Hyunjin’s deep voice in your ear, coaxing you to come back as he presses sweet kisses to your cheek, your neck, the corner of your lips.
“Welcome back,” he chuckles as you blink a few times, attempting to clear your vision.
You lay against him and try to calm your breathing, the rush of oxygen filling your lungs once more. You feel like you can feel the blood rush through your veins, traveling through your body, providing blood to areas that were briefly devoid of it.
“How long was I out?” You mumble as you struggle to sit up.
“Less than minute, so not long. Rest, I’ll go grab you some water.”
You lay back and watch as he shuffles to the kitchen, closing your eyes as you listen to the rain that has steadily pounded the windows. You open them to receive the water that Hyunjin hands you and greedily sip from the cup, feeling parched after your orgasm.
Hyunjin changes the channel and watches the screen, silent and focused as if he didn’t just give you a mind blowing orgasm. You’re left confused, but wondering why. It’s just sex, nothing more. You’ll spend the summer with him and then leave. But if that’s the case, why do you feel a pang in your heart after these moments? Why do you feel like you want to reach out to him, kiss his plush lips and share your hopes and dreams with him?
There are constantly butterflies floating around in your stomach, that fluttering feeling you’re attuned to that you only attribute to someone you’re interested in. You’re not interested in Hyunjin…right?
Hyunjin can tell you’re lost in your own world, your eyes unfocused and gaze somewhere else. He wonders what is going through that beautiful mind of yours. He can’t help but think back, how you look at him as if he’s the best thing in the world, but at the same time with reservation; as if he’s a tiger with his claws out ready to pounce.
He’s worried for you, concerned at your demands for harshness, something he’s not accustomed to. He wishes he can be the opposite, someone sweet, attending to your needs, loving instead of rough, demanding, and almost borderline cruel. You still haven’t divulged why you made this trip, away from the city into the middle of nowhere. Would it be wrong for him to ask again while you’re still slightly elsewhere in some other world?
Hyunjin knows it would be wrong, but decides to take advantage of the situation and ask anyway. Clearing his throat, he softly calls your name, his breath catching as you turn to look at him, your eyes slowing refocusing.
“So what brought you out here?” He’s blunt with his question, hoping you’ll catch his drift and answer.
You’re slightly taken aback by his question, your mouth dropping slightly. However, you recover quickly and drink the rest of your water and set the cup down. You take a moment to think, the pleasant feeling you were experiencing quickly ebbing away. You twinkle your thumbs, and consider if you should dive into your past, spill it all for this person who is practically a stranger. The last thought makes you chuckle because is he even a stranger? After all, he’s touched you in places that haven’t been touched in months and made you feel on cloud nine.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to tell me,” he mumbles, a twinge of disappointment in his voice.
“No, it’s okay. I went through a bad breakup and he wasn’t the nicest. He wasn’t a nice person.”
You leave it at that and there’s silence filling up the space. You play with the fringe of the shirt you’re wearing, not wanting to meet Hyunjin’s eyes. One minute passes and then two and then three and you think Hyunjin will not reply until a moment later he does, his voice pregnant with pity.
“I’m sorry.”
Two little words that you’ve heard so much over the last year. Two little words that at first caused you to break down in tears due to your anguish that now fill you with anger. The feeling swirls around inside you, growing larger with each second until it threatens to burst out of you like a balloon with too much air. This is the opposite as to why you went on this trip. You didn’t want to think of your past and failures, the man that you called yours for so long.
Getting up, you turned to face Hyunjin, the shock on his face not fazing you. The anger bubbles, festers until it spills over, white hot and lethal.
“I don’t need your pity!” You screech, your face your sure is one of pure terror to the man sitting on the couch. “That’s all anyone says is I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Everyone but the one person who should have said it, apologized for the shitty things he did to me!”
You hate getting angry because when you do, the angry switches to something else. The flame dies, sputtering out and is replaced with sorrow, the pressure settling in your chest. You feel the tears gather in your eyes and you will yourself not to cry in front of Hyunjin who is now giving you a sad look. You fight hard, ball up your fists, breathe through your nose until you can’t hold it and the first tear slides down your face.
However, once one tear surfaces, more follow until they’re running like a faucet, tainting your face with water. You sink to your knees again and cover your face in your hands and cry, the sobs wrecking your frame as you mumble “Why didn’t he say sorry? What’s wrong with me,” over and over.
Hyunjin slides down to the floor and gathers you in his arms and buries his head in the crook of your neck. “Shh, shh, it’s okay y/n. I won’t bring it up again okay? I promise.”
You cry into his shirt, vaguely hearing his words. Your fingers grasp the material and you tug on it, gently the first time and then a little harder and then even harder still until he catches a hint. He lets his guard down briefly, and in that moment you push him down, not paying attention to the surprise that’s etched into his face.
You quickly shuck your shirt off to Hyunjin’s chagrin and grasp his hands to place them on your breasts. He’s hesitant at first, debating whether he should give into your administrations when you’re so distraught. However, the look you give him with your tear stained face decides for him and he massages the flesh, his lips falling open at the breathy moan you let out.
He teases your nipples and looks down at the mounds, mesmerized at how they harden at his touch, little pebbles beginning to pop up. Hyunjin brushes his thumb over the nubs, just a feather light touch over and over, memorizing your sighs as you push your breasts into the palms of his hands more.
Hyunjin feels himself fill out in his sweats, rather quicker than usual, the feeling becoming more uncomfortable as time passes. As if you can read his thoughts, you reach into his sweats and pull his cock out, smoothing your finger against the tip, spreading the precum that has gathered there around. You quickly rid yourself of your panties and then lift your hips, aligning yourself with his cock at your entrance.
Slowly, you sink down, taking all of him, tossing your head back in ecstasy at the stretch in this position. You waste no time and begin bouncing on his length, chasing the pleasure that is slowing replacing the sorrow that you felt previously. You revel at the moans falling from Hyunjin’s lips, savoring how his hands grip your waist tightly and the pain that arises when he digs his fingers into your skin.
He quickly takes over and guides your hips, dragging your pussy against his cock. You look down and take in your slick that now coats his pelvis and the hairs that litter the area. You don’t dare look at his face, not wanting to see his blown out pupils, his pants open as he pants at the feel of your warm pussy wrapped tightly around him.
Hyunjin knows you don’t want soft and sweet now but yet rough, so he brings a hand down to your ass, the sound of his palm hitting the flesh ringing out in the room. His hand comes down again and again, his cock twitching at how your ass jiggles with contact. You are perfect, just absolutely perfect in his eyes. He notices you slow down, your face now buried in his neck.
“Keep riding, don’t stop. Make yourself come,” he growls as he grips your hips tightly again.
You whine and speed up the motions of your hips, lost in the drag of his length against your walls, reaching your sweet spot and making your walls clench in response. The pressure begins to build within, slowly taking over and spreading warmth throughout your body. You are drenching Hyunjin’s cock, the sound of your wet pussy making Hyunjin lose his mind.
“So wet for me. All for me hm?” He teases, guiding your hips faster and faster until you’re moaning loudly in his ear.
“Mm gonna come,” you whimper.
“Yeah? Gonna come for me love? Go on then, come on my cock.”
Between his raspy voice in your ear and the pressure against your sweet spot you let go, your arousal gushing out of your entrance and coating Hyunjin’s pelvis and thighs. You let out a cry as you desperately ride his cock, savoring that high that you needed, obsessed with the way his cock felt inside you as your walls spasmed around it.
“That’s it,” Hyunjin groans as you clench around him until he lets go, filling you up with his cum.
You collapse against his body as he holds you, his fingers drifting softly up and down your spine. You’re breathing heavy and you find yourself nuzzling into the crook of his neck. There’s a shift in the air, if ever so softly that neither one of you acknowledges. You feel at ease, content against Hyunjin, savoring how his body feels against yours, how comfortable you are as he soothes you.
Hyunjin holds you with affection, making sure you are supported as you come down from your high, so different than the other few times you’ve shared together. He smiles as he feels you relax into him and he lets out a content sigh. The tv still plays, the actors and actresses acting out some scene and the rain still patters against the window, but the two of you are silent, enjoying each other’s warmth and comfort.
Eventually, Hyunjin stands up and brings you with him and walks to the bedroom, placing you within the warmth of the blankets. He slides in next to you and pulls you close, and watches as you snuggling into his chest and slowly drift to sleep. He watches your face, takes in the soft features as your eyelids flutter, your brain likely dreaming. As he stares at the beautiful woman in his arms, he slowly drifts to sleep himself, letting the feel of your warmth and sound of the rain and thunder lull him to sleep.
After that night, you both share a new routine, as Hyunjin stays most nights with you. Neither one of you speak of what occurred, what was discussed or lack of but instead embrace the new feelings.
Your time is slowly coming to an end and Hyunjin is determined to fill it with activities. You both are floating in the lake, the cool water kissing your skin nicely on this sweltering day. Hyunjin swims towards you and then splashes water in your face, chuckling as you let out a shriek. He does it a few times before snatching you in his arms, holding you close.
You giggle as he places a kiss to your nose and you wrap your arms tighter around his neck. His face is even more beautiful in the sun, with droplets of water slowly dripping down, his hair plastered to his face haphazardly. His eyes sparkle as they take you in and roam down your face to your lips which slightly part as if in invitation.
Hyunjin closes the gap between you and locks his lips with yours. It starts innocent enough but soon turns heated as his tongue tangles with yours and his hands pull you closer, urging you to wrap your legs around his waist. Still connected, he somehow wades his way to the shore and before you know it you’re both back on the sand.
He lays you down and flips you over, the unspoken rule between you two observed without question. Your swim bottoms are untied and fall away from your body and your legs spread, making room for him to take you. You sigh as Hyunjin breaches your entrance and begins snapping his hips into yours, fucking you just how you like it.
He reaches for your ponytail and pulls, a loud groan gracing your ears as he reaches deeper within you. He easily finds your spot that makes your toes curl as he spends time nearly everyday memorizing every part of you. He reaches around you and finds your clit, swirling quick circles around your bundle of nerves. He fucks you hard and fast, needing his release just as much as you need yours. His eyes travel to wear you meet his thrusts, his eyes glued to your ass, to how your pussy grips his cock and sucks him back in.
Hyunjin’s hips snap faster into yours, his rhythm slightly off as he feels his orgasm rear its head until he explodes, his vision blurring and his body twitching as he unloads himself within you. He savors your moans as you quiver around him, his orgasm setting yours off.
You whine at the loss of his cock, shivering as you feel his cum leak out of your pussy and onto the towel below. Hyunjin helps you get dressed and then helps you up. As you both walk back to the house, Hyunjin grabs your hand and laces his fingers with yours.
“So the festival is coming up…in town. I was wondering if you’d like to go?” He glances at you nervously, scared that you would decline his offer.
However, you think it a great idea and accept, smiling as he lets out a breath that he was holding. You were eager to see the town and attend the festival as Hyunjin mentions it multiple times a day. Being a local himself, he’s attended every year since he was child and he is over the moon you’d get to attend with him this year.
Maybe the festival was just what you two needed to become ever closer together.
You eye yourself in the mirror, fixing the strays hairs and dabbing at your lipstick that you had just put on. Tonight was the festival and Hyunjin was waiting for you, ready to enjoy a night on the town. You stepped back and eyed your dress one last time before grabbing your bag and turning out the bathroom light.
You walked into the living room to see Hyunjin jump up quickly from the couch, his face in awe at your appearance.
“You look beautiful,” he said, walking closer to you with his hand outstretched.
“Thank you,” you replied, your face heating up as you took his hand.
He led you to his car and helped you in, softly shutting the door. You watched as he slid in and started the car and backed out of the driveway. It was weird to see the house fade away and you as a passenger as the last time you went down this road was at your arrival in your own car.
You couldn’t believe that was almost two months ago, the time passing quickly. You felt lighter than when you came and you had the man sitting next to you to thank for that. You looked out the window as Hyunjin drove towards town, taking the many twists and turns in the road with stride. You wondered what the town would look like, whether it appeared like those that you would see on old movies, small and quaint and filled with joy.
You didn’t have to wait for long as Hyunjin pulled up to a parking lot and pulled into a space. As you both walked toward the center of town, you were taken aback by your surroundings. The square was lit with fairy lights and the fountain aglow with strings of lights, delicately wrapped around the base. Families and couples walked around, chattering away or hands filled with food. Children’s laughter rang out in the night air, the atmosphere as a whole light and filled with fun.
Hyunjin led you to a restaurant, with many tables outside filled with patrons. He walked up to the hostess who greeted you both cheerfully and led you to a table, in view of the beautiful square. You accepted the menu with a thanks and smiled as she handed Hyunjin his.
You looked down in silence, eyeing the many options in interest, your mouth starting to salivate at the delicious entrees. Finally you decided on one at the same time Hyunjin decided on his. You both placed your orders and began to chat, reminiscing on your summer together.
Conversation came easy as it always did with Hyunjin and the atmosphere made it even easier and lighter. Before you knew it, your food was placed in front of you and you immediately dug in, not realizing how hungry you were.
The meal ended without a hitch and Hyunjin paid the tab, leaving a hefty tip for the waitress. He patted his belly and sighed and then looked up at you.
“Ready?” He inquired and you nodded, ready to walk around and see what else the festival had in store.
Stalls lined the street on each side of the walkway, filled with wares and different treats. Hyunjin bought you an ice cream which you quickly ate, the cream and vanilla satisfying your sweet tooth. You played a few games, both of you loosing spectacularly but still having fun.
As you made it to the end of the stalls, Hyunjin grabbed your hand and held it tight, steering you back to the center of town. You took a deep breath, filling your lungs with the crisp, night air, feeling happier than you have been in a long time.
As you got closer to the center of town, the music became louder and you could hear people cheering and clapping along with the beat. Once you both arrived, you immediately saw the source of the commotion, as a mini dance floor had opened up and couples were dancing to the lively music.
It seemed fun and you wanted to join so you looked up at Hyunjin, hoping he’d catch your drift. He took one look at your face and understood immediately and pulled you along into the throng of dancing people.
He grasped both of your hands and you both began to dance, exaggerating your movements to the beat. The air was filled with laughter and cheers and your face was stuck with a smile as you danced away with Hyunjin. He had a plethora of moves and showed them off one by one, a small crowd beginning to form around the two of you.
Somehow, you knew how to match him, moving your body along to the beat and focusing on your partner. The cheers and hollers fueled your passion and you increased your energy, moving along flawlessly. The band took notice and played song after song, watching you and Hyunjin steal the show.
You’re not sure how much time passed but finally the band ended the last song and you both stopped, gasping for breath after such exertion. The crowd clapped and cheered before slowly dispersing, leaving the two of you standing close to each other with sweat dripping down your faces.
“Well that was fun,” Hyunjin said as he burst into a smile, his dimples that you loved popping up.
“It was,” you giggled and followed him off of the makeshift dance floor.
He grabbed you both waters and you decided to walk back to the car, chatting about how well the night went. The ride back to the house was a quiet affair, your ears still buzzing from the band. You replayed the night in your head, smiling to yourself as you remembered how you moved seamlessly with Hyunjin, like you both were able to speak to each other telepathically.
This summer truly has been fun and much needed and you were happy you chose to stay at Hyunjin’s house.
All too soon, his car pulled up the driveway to the house and he killed the engine. Hyunjin helped you out of the car and walked next to you up the stairs of the porch. You stood back as he unlocked the door and you walked into the hall, greeted by the fresh blast of cool air which you gratefully accepted.
Kicking your shoes off, you made your way to the bedroom, Hyunjin hot on your heels. As soon as you crossed the threshold, he grabbed your hand and spun you around until you were flush against his body. He pressed his lips to yours in a heated kiss, covering the gasp you let out in surprise.
Slowly, he walked you to the bed and pushed you down, smirking as you sighed and smiled up at him. He quickly undressed and you watched eagerly, your eyes focused on his hands as he stepped out of his pants, his cock that you have grown to love springing free from its confines.
Hyunjin reached for the straps of your dress and slid them down your arms before ridding you of the garment, his eyes glued to your body that laid bare in front of him. He wasted no time in spreading your legs and lowering his face to your pussy and licking a stripe through your folds before latching onto your clit.
You grasped his hair and guided his head, waves of pleasure traveling through you as he devoured you like you were his last meal. He knew the spots that would make your toes curl and you whimpered as he reached each one, you back arching off the bed. You were close, your orgasm threatening to spill any moment, but were disappointed as Hyunjin scooted away, wiping his face of your fluids.
“Sh, sh love, I got you,” he cooed as he grasped his cock and brought it to your entrance.
He slowly pushed into you, your walls accepting him without issue until he was buried within you to the hilt. Hyunjin took a deep breath before rolling his hips into yours slowly, deeply, taking his time dragging his length in and out of you. You wiggled beneath him, thrusted your hips up trying to get him to speed up, but he just stopped his movements, causing you to whine.
“Let me worship you love.” He whispered as he rolled his hips once more, his eyes glued to yours.
“You’re so beautiful. You’re pussy sucking me in, taking me like it was made for me. And it was hm,” he moans, still keeping the slow pace.
You watched as he grasped your hands and laced his fingers with yours and your eyes locked onto his. Hyunjin stared into your eyes, peering beyond the cornea, beyond the iris and deep into your soul. He read every movement, heard every sound, and felt every huff, pant, and breath you let out. His movements were precise, slow, practiced, so perfect that every drag felt overwhelming, sending shockwaves of pleasure throughout your core.
You felt sensitive, emotions rising up that you haven’t faced in years. You breath became shallow and you gasped for air, squeezing Hyunjin’s hand to try and ground yourself.
“Breathe, love, breathe…that’s it,” Hyunjin whispered as he eyed you, watching as you fell apart beneath him.
You took a deep breath, allowing the air to completely fill your lungs before letting it out, repeating the motion again and again as tears began to fall down your face. Hyunjin leaned forward into you, adjusting himself and buried his face into your neck.
As he whispered sweet nothings in your ear and dragged his length within you, you felt the coil build, slowly, tightly like never before. You felt your toes tingle and the heat spread to every corner of your body threatening to spill over. Hyunjin continued to make love to you as you weeped, your tears falling onto his shoulders as he gripped your hands tightly and pressed wet kisses against your neck.
“Come for me,” hyunjin moaned and you let out a shaky cry, squirting your release onto his cock and belly.
Hyunjin thrusted into you once more and stilled his hips, coming deep inside you, holding you flush against him. You both laid there in silence, coming down from your highs, relishing in the silence after your love making.
You buried your hands in his soft hair and held him close, your heart beating wildly. You felt love bubble up within, a feeling you haven’t experienced in a while and you let it take over until you were crying again, your sniffles making Hyunjin sit up in alarm.
“Are you okay?” He asked in a panic, worried that he had hurt you in some way.
You shook your head and smiled, feeling quite the opposite. Hyunjin sighed in relief and grinned before laying next to you and pulling you close.
As the night went on and hyunjin’s shallow breathing turned into deeper, drawn out breaths, your heart swelled with the love you had for this man. However, with every rainbow there is a storm and you realized that in a week you’d be leaving, never to see Hyunjin again. The thought made you sad and empty inside, and fresh tears began falling from your face. Maybe you shouldn’t have let yourself fall for him, but instead should have kept your distance.
Your last week went by quickly and you began to pack, making sure you gathered all of your belongings that had been scattered throughout the place over the last few months. Hyunjin watched solemnly as you scampered around the house, a sense of dread filling him within.
You both had not discussed what had happened just last week, as he made love to you, worshipped you. He’s been scared as to what you would say, worried that you would turn him down. But as he watches you pack some shirts, he wishes he would have taken the chance, confessed to you, and try to make this work.
He reminisces on how closed off you were when you arrived and how slowly but surely you blossomed like a flower, showing off your beauty once you felt safe and secure. He’d love to be that security for you, take care of you, love you, and cherish you, but it may be too late to voice so.
He bites his lips, his head filled with conflict, unaware that you were stealing glances at him every now and then.
You place your makeup bag in your suitcase and sigh. Hyunjin seems preoccupied, his mind elsewhere and you wonder what he is thinking about. He is thinking of you? The summer you two spent together, learning how to open up and care for each other, like a baby learning to take their first steps.
You’re silent, too nervous to question him and see what’s on his mind. Instead you finish up packing as you want to get on the road before dark. An hour later you are ready, your bags all packed and waiting by the door. Hyunjin stands in the middle of the floor, his hands in his pockets and his gaze on the ground.
You’re both silent, neither one of you wanting to say the dreaded words. But, the sun is steadily moving across the sky and darkness is threatening to take over. It’s now or never.
“Well thanks for everything,” you say, swindling your hands behind your back.
Hyunjin merely grunts and looks up into your eyes. It’s silent a moment more before you nod and grab your suitcase and walk to your car. Hyunjin follows you and watches as you load your bag and shut the trunk and round the side to the drivers seat.
“I hope you had a pleasant stay,” Hyunjin says, a professional smile plastered on his face, after all he’s only a host.
“I did. I really did,” you reply, your voice barely reaching his ears.
You make to get into the car when Hyunjin shouts your name and rushes toward you to take you in his arms. He presses his lips to yours for a kiss, one that conveys how much he loves you, how much he wishes you could be his. You return the kiss, allowing your hands to drift into his hair and touch the strands like you would do as you cuddled in bed, forgetting the world outside.
As Hyunjin steps back, he gives you a sad smile and watches you get into the car, carefully shutting the door behind you. He watches as you start the ignition and pull away, your car getting smaller in the distance. He sends his heart with you, hoping you’ll keep it safe; hoping that you realize it will always be yours.
You look back through your rear view mirror and see Hyunjin standing there, watching as you drive away. Your heart pangs and you take a deep breath and let it out, gripping the steering wheel even tighter.
You remember how you started this retreat, broken, lost, and alone. Your heart was closed off, a wall built around it, protecting it from anyone who was seeking it out. You reflect on how you feel lighter and can move on, leaving all of the pain in the past. You smile as you realize Hyunjin is to thank for that and hope that you two will meet again.
You send out your love to him, wish it to lodge deep in his heart so he can find his way back to you. While you manifest this thought, you feel a warmth take over and land in your chest, leaving you feeling at peace. You know it is Hyunjin, joining you for the journey and promising to love you for all eternity.
And with that, you’re okay. You promise to keep his love safe and protected until you’re able to see each other again.

pairing: spencer reid x fem!reader (usage of Y/N)
genre: fluff
note: i love yearning, slow burn spencer, so bear with me as i continuously churn out these fluffy stories. honestly not too sure how i feel about this one, maybe i'll continue the story? idk. i'm not really liking how it turned out but it might just be because i've reread it too many times, but i just wanted to post it bc i'm having writer's block!!!! kinda struggling with my writing rn, UGH! but anyways, as always, please enjoy, even though i just went on a pessimistic rant lol.
It was late morning, and the bullpen at Quantico hummed with a quiet, restless energy — the kind that filled the air when something was about to happen, though no one quite knew what.
Sunlight slanted in through the high windows, striping the desks in warm gold and shadow. The low murmur of conversation drifted through the space, broken now and then by the faint clatter of a mug being set down, the rustle of papers, the soft mechanical hum of the printer across the room.
Hotch had sent out a clipped message that morning — unexpected.
Conference. 10:30.
No urgent case file attached. No coded pre-brief from JJ. Nothing from Garcia’s terminal. Just that — cool and spare. Enough to spark curiosity like static.
Now, ten minutes before the hour, the bullpen had begun to subtly shift — that unspoken way the team always seemed to gather when the center of gravity tipped toward something new.
Coffee cups in hand, files forgotten, they found themselves orbiting naturally toward Spencer’s desk — the usual center point in moments like these.
Morgan leaned one hip against the edge of the desk, twirling a pen between his fingers. Emily settled nearby, her chair tipped back just slightly, one boot hooked around the leg. JJ arrived with a soft thump of her file folder, setting it down before crossing her arms in curiosity. Garcia, bright-eyed and colorful, perched on the corner with a rustle of fabric and the faint vanilla-sugar scent of her latest perfume.
And in the middle of it all — Spencer sat, cardigan sleeves pushed to his elbows, a familiar fountain pen resting idly between his fingers. His notebooks lay open before him — unscribbled, forgotten — as his gaze drifted, unfocused, somewhere far beyond the present conversation.
Above them, the second-story mezzanine stood quiet. No sign of Hotch yet.
The bullpen breathed with waiting — something in the stillness, in the shifting glances, in the undercurrent of soft voices and quiet anticipation, as if the room itself held its breath for whatever would come next.
Garcia, bright-eyed and luminous in a swirl of violet silk, leaned one hip with theatrical flair against the edge of Spencer’s desk, mirroring Morgan’s easy stance. In one hand she held a paper cup, its pale surface scattered with tiny pink hearts, steam curling lazily from the lid like the last breath of a spell.
“I’m telling you,” she declared, eyes wide with certainty, “this is definitely about new equipment. Or tech upgrades. Maybe he’s finally letting me overhaul the databases.”
Morgan let out a low chuckle, stretching back in his chair with casual grace, arms folded across his broad chest. A slow shake of his head, eyes gleaming.
“Come on, baby girl — Hotch wouldn’t be this mysterious over hard drives.”
Emily smirked over the rim of her coffee cup, shoulders relaxed, dark lashes catching the late-morning light.
“Maybe it’s a new recruit,” she mused, voice teasing. “Or budget talks. Or... mandatory wellness seminars.”
A collective groan rose from the little circle.
“If it’s more wellness training,” Rossi intoned dryly from his perch nearby — the morning’s Washington Post still folded under one arm — “I’m transferring to cybercrimes.” But the faint, knowing glint in his eyes gave him away.
JJ shook her head, blond waves falling over one shoulder as she gave a rueful smile.
“He wouldn’t pull us all in just for that.”
Spencer listened — or seemed to — gaze flicking now and then to Morgan, to Garcia’s flurry of color, to Emily’s grin over her coffee. The low rhythm of voices surrounded him, bright and familiar. He heard each word, each teasing lilt — but it was as though the sound reached him through a thin layer of water, slow and distant.
Because beneath it all — beneath the warmth of the room, beneath the soft tap of heels on tile and the rustle of paper — his thoughts circled, always, to her.
Even now — especially now — everything seemed to spiral back to her.
How many months since she’d left? He’d counted them at first, marked the weeks in the margins of his calendar, tracked deployments and return dates like a ritual. Eventually, the numbers blurred — but the ache never dulled.
He caught himself doing it still — absent, distracted in moments like this — wondering what city she was in now. Whether she was safe. Whether she missed them.
Whether she thought of him.
A familiar weight settled in his chest — low and constant, the shape of missing her. He smoothed it down the way he always did, fingers tightening briefly on the pen.
At that moment, Garcia’s voice rang brightly through the air: “If this is a team restructure meeting, I swear I will riot. Peacefully. In glitter.”
Spencer blinked — half-smiling despite himself. Without looking up from the pen, he murmured softly, voice low and dry: “I’m fairly certain the Bureau has policies against both glitter and riots.”
Morgan let out a low chuckle. “See? Even the good doctor’s ready to shut you down, baby girl.”
That pulled a faint, crooked smile from Spencer — the corners of his mouth lifting, then fading.
Garcia pressed a dramatic hand to her chest. “So much logic in one room. It’s exhausting.”
The conversation drifted on — light, easy.
Spencer leaned back in his chair, gaze resting somewhere beyond the curve of the room — past the windows, past the moment.
“Where is Hotch, anyway?” Morgan asked, glancing toward the mezzanine — one brow lifted, voice curling with curiosity.
The question hovered in the air — unanswered — as the little circle fell into a brief pause.
And then —
The elevator chimed.
Soft — an ordinary sound, easily lost in the low hum of the bullpen — but in that moment, it seemed to echo just a fraction longer than usual. A faint, suspended note, bright against the stillness.
No one moved at first. No one looked.
And then — footsteps.
Measured. Unhurried. The familiar cadence of heels on tile — a crisp, rhythmic sound that drifted through the open space with almost hypnotic clarity.
It was a sound they all knew — had known. A sound that once threaded through their days so easily it hardly registered at all.
Until it had been gone.
And now — now it returned — unmistakable.
Spencer’s breath caught.
Before he quite realized it, his gaze lifted — drawn instinctively across the bullpen, past the edge of his desk, toward the entryway — toward the source of that sound.
And there — framed in the soft wash of light from the corridor beyond — she stood.
For a moment, the entire bullpen seemed to still. The air shifted — the edges of the room blurring faintly, as though the world had drawn a breath and forgotten to release it.
She moved forward — unhurried, composed — the easy grace of someone who had walked this path a thousand times before.
Her hair — soft, undone, loose in a way that seemed both effortless and deliberate — brushed her shoulders in a gentle wave. The delicate planes of her face caught the light — the elegant slope of her nose, the soft curve of her cheek, the fullness of her mouth touched with the faintest flush of rose. Her lashes cast fine shadows against her skin.
And her eyes — God, her eyes — quiet and clear and steady, the kind of gaze that could both undo and anchor a man. There was a knowing there — something older, softer, as though she had seen too much and still chosen gentleness.
She wore simple, perfect lines — a fitted black knit top that framed her collarbones with spare elegance, sleeves pushed just past her wrists. Slate-gray slacks, soft in their drape, skimming long legs with easy movement. Black low heels, no louder than a sigh against the tile.
No badge, no blazer, no ostentation — just her.
And in that moment — her presence filled the room more fully than any arrival could.
The hum of the bullpen seemed to fall away — voices dimming, motion pausing, as if drawn into the quiet gravity of her entrance.
Spencer’s breath caught — sharp in his chest — and for one fragile second, he could do nothing but look.
She’s here.
She tilted her head faintly, one brow lifting in the subtlest tease — mouth curving with a flicker of amusement.
“You guys always this jumpy in the mornings?”
For a single breath — no one moved.
It was as if the air itself had thinned — caught somewhere between heartbeats.
Then — the spell broke.
A bright, delighted gasp: “Oh my god — Y/N!”
Garcia was the first to move — coffee nearly forgotten, her cup teetering dangerously on the edge of Spencer’s desk as she flew forward in a whirl of color and perfume.
Before anyone could so much as blink, she had Y/N wrapped in a fierce, breathless hug — arms tight, voice bubbling over.
“You didn’t tell us—!”
Emily was close behind, laughter rising as she caught Y/N’s other arm in a quick pull, drawing her in.
“How long— when— what—?” JJ’s voice chimed through the tangle of greetings, her smile wide and bright as she reached in mid-hug, the words tumbling over themselves in joy.
And then — Morgan.
A deep, familiar whoop split the air as he strode forward, easy grin wide, hands outstretched. Without hesitation, he swept Y/N off her feet — a half-spin, effortless and exuberant.
“Look who’s back in the big leagues!”
The bullpen rippled with warmth — the sound of it filling every corner.
Even Rossi — leaning back against the edge of a nearby desk, arms folded with casual grace — let a rare smile soften his features.
“It’s about time,” he said, voice low but warmly sincere.
The bullpen bloomed with joy — wide and irrepressible, the kind of warmth that filled a room from the inside out. It wasn’t forced. It wasn’t polite. It was the deep, unguarded welcome reserved for one of their own — a missing piece returned to its place.
Voices overlapped, laughter spilling into the air. The small crowd folded around her in an instant — hands reaching, arms pulling her close, greetings tumbling over one another in the rush to be heard.
Everyone — except Spencer.
He stood more slowly — as though the very act of moving had weight. His legs felt strangely unsteady beneath him, breath caught somewhere in his chest. A wild, heady thrum of blood rushed in his ears — the rhythm of a heart that couldn’t quite catch up to the moment. For one long second, he couldn’t speak. Couldn’t move. His mouth opened, then closed again — words crowding his throat, too many all at once, none of them enough.
She was here.
Not an echo through Garcia’s screen. Not a line of text in a quiet after-hours message. Not a passing update on some distant, classified case.
Here.
And for one dizzy, breathless beat — all he could do was stare. As though the very sight of her might dissolve if he blinked too fast — a trick of the light, too fragile to trust.
She glanced up — mid-hug with Garcia, arms still looped around her friend’s shoulders — a bright laugh just beginning to bloom at the corner of her mouth.
And then — her gaze caught his. Across the distance, across the bright scatter of voices, the blur of motion — her eyes found Spencer’s.
The shift was immediate.
Something in her expression gentled — softened at the edges, the brightness folding inward to something quieter, deeper. A warmth that seemed to bloom from beneath the surface. Her smile changed — not the easy grin she’d offered to the others, not the familiar humor of old camaraderie — but something softer. More fragile. The kind of smile meant for only one person in the room.
For a heartbeat, maybe longer, the space between them narrowed to nothing at all.
The background dissolved — voices falling away, color blurring at the edges. The bustling light of the bullpen dimmed to a quiet hum — as though the world itself had drawn in its breath, suspended between one moment and the next.
Just her. Just him.
And in her eyes: something unspoken.
I’m here. I came back.
Spencer’s heart wrenched. The force of it nearly staggered him.
He couldn’t look away.
Before he could so much as move — before breath returned to his lungs — another figure stepped into the frame: Hotch. Calm, composed, steady as a metronome — dark suit sharp against the light, file tucked under one arm. He came to stand at her side — his presence as grounding as it had always been — and with a faint nod, addressed the gathered team.
“Agent Y/N,” he said, voice low but carrying, “has officially requested reassignment back to the BAU.” A pause — the barest flicker of something like approval in his eyes — then, evenly: “She’ll be rejoining the team, effective today.”
For one suspended second — stillness. A collective breath.
And then — the room erupted.
“Finally!” Garcia all but squealed, hands clapping together, her whole face alight with joy.
Emily grinned wide, shaking her head with mock outrage. “And you were going to let us find out like this?”
JJ let out a bright laugh, bumping shoulders with Morgan. “Unbelievable. You’re sneaky.”
Morgan crossed his arms with a wide grin. “About time. We were getting boring without you.”
Even Rossi’s low chuckle threaded through the air: “Welcome home.”
Hotch, unmoved by the sudden swell of sound, allowed a small lift of his brow — the faintest suggestion of a smile — before turning his gaze toward Y/N once more.
“It’s good to have you back,” he said quietly.
But Spencer barely heard it.
He couldn’t move. Couldn’t tear his gaze from hers.
As though some small, stubborn part of him feared that if he blinked — if he looked away for even a second — she might vanish once more into the space between then and now.
The day unfolded like sunlight through an open window — slow at first, golden, weightless — then all at once.
Outside, the early hours of spring had burned away to a mild, sunlit morning. Bright ribbons of light stretched long across the floor, spilling in from the tall windows, catching motes of dust in the air like tiny, drifting stars. The warmth of it soaked into the bones of the old building — rising from the tile, softening the edges of desks and chairs, gilding stray papers and forgotten coffee mugs with an amber sheen.
And within it all — threaded through light and shadow alike — there was something more.
A hum. A charge. The quiet, unmistakable thrum of happiness — of something righting itself after having tilted off balance for far too long.
She was back.
And with her — the whole rhythm of the day seemed brighter, lighter.
Laughter rose more easily. Conversations wove through the air in fluid threads. Even the usual shuffle of agents passing through the halls seemed softened — as though some unseen weight had lifted from the walls.
For Spencer — it was almost too much.
Too much brightness after too long in the dark. Too much warmth against the old familiar ache that lived in his ribs.
But he breathed it in all the same — heart unsteady, gaze drawn toward her again and again — as though some deep part of him still feared this might all dissolve if he dared look away.
Everywhere she moved, the team seemed to orbit her — drawn instinctively as if by some invisible current.
Wherever Y/N stood — at her desk, by the break room, pausing near a file cabinet — small constellations of conversation formed around her, shifting and bright.
JJ had practically whisked her away into the break room first — one arm looped through hers, mock-stern, laughing. “Alright — details. Now. We’ve been in the dark for months.”
Morgan kept appearing — popping around corners, leaning casually in doorframes — grinning wide, voice rich with teasing questions: “So what do those top-secret types eat for breakfast, huh? Bet it’s not the powdered eggs they give us here.”
Rossi, ever composed, had stepped in with a quiet smile — fingers curling easily around the handle of the old glass carafe — pouring her coffee as though it were ritual, timeless. “Thought you might want the real thing,” he’d said, eyes warm.
Garcia swept in and out like a breeze — a box of cupcakes balanced in one hand, her phone in the other — declaring to anyone who would listen that it was now an unofficial welcome-home party, and she expected attendance.
And Emily — bright and laughing — finally caught her in a loose side hug, her voice low and warm against the hum of the room: “You look good. International life suits you.”
Spencer lingered nearby — his notebook open in front of him, pen resting between his fingers — though the last entry on the page trailed off mid-sentence, the ink gone dry twenty minutes ago.
He hadn’t noticed.
She was here.
Not a name in passing. Not a quiet message on Garcia’s screen. Not a blurred update buried in Interpol case logs he shouldn’t have checked so often. Not a digital echo, a secondhand scrap of her voice carried through someone else’s words.
Just — here.
Breathing the same air. Moving through the light. Smiling — real, present — no longer half a world away.
And he — he could hardly breathe around it.
The bullpen seemed to glow at the edges — bright and diffuse — as though the sunlight itself had shifted toward her, drawn in quiet orbit by the warmth of her presence. It spilled across the floor in long, drowsy ribbons — catching the glint of polished nameplates, skimming across the soft grain of well-worn desks, gilding the corners of open files and stray paperclips with delicate threads of gold. Dust drifted lazily in the beams — small, weightless things that turned and tumbled as if the very air had changed its shape around her.
And through it all — winding between light and shadow — the low hum of voices moved like music. Familiar. Intimate. Soft with happiness. A language made not of words, but of glances and smiles and the deep, unspoken ease of being home again.
Spencer caught fragments of conversation as they wove past him, his gaze straying again and again toward where she stood — framed by the others, light in her hair.
“Yeah — Interpol Liaison Assignment. Mostly Europe. A lot of long-term cases, international consults... more airports than I care to remember.”
Her voice — the sound of it — sent a fresh ache through his ribs.
“It was good work,” she added after a pause, voice dipping quieter, smile softening. Her gaze drifted for a moment, something wistful in her expression.
“But…” A breath. “…I missed this. All of you.”
Across the circle, Morgan grinned — arms folded, voice warm with easy affection.
“Well — our gain,” he said. “You kept climbing the ladder — now we get to brag about you.”
Y/N laughed lightly. “Not much ladder left to climb. I just wanted to come home.”
Home. The word twisted something in Spencer’s chest.
He hadn’t spoken to her yet — not really.
Just that one glance — in the doorway, in the hush before the others had rushed forward — the quiet pull of her gaze catching his across the room. A single moment — fragile as spun glass — now tucked carefully away behind his ribs. Since then, with the bullpen alive around her, voices bright, old rhythms rekindled — he had kept to the edges. Watching. Wanting.
Too much, too soon — the ache of it caught behind his breath, impossible to name.
At one point, Y/N stepped out of the break room — a fresh coffee cradled between her palms, steam curling soft and white into the sunlit air. She moved with that same easy grace — loose-limbed, quietly self-possessed — a familiar rhythm that made Spencer’s chest ache. Without seeming to notice, her path angled toward his desk — a pause, a breath of stillness in the bright hum of the room.
Their eyes met. This time — it lingered. A second. A little more. Something deeper passed between them — not loud, not declarative — but certain all the same.
“Hey,” she said softly, voice warm — low enough that it seemed meant for only him.
Spencer looked up — breath catching, heart kicking against his ribs.
He opened his mouth — found it dry. He swallowed — forced a breath past the tightness in his chest. “Hey,” he managed, voice quiet. “Welcome back.”
Her smile tilted — slow, fond, something in it that caught and held. “Thanks.”
She looked — for one flicker of a moment — as though she might say more. Her gaze lingered, lips parting —
But just then, Garcia swept through the room in a swirl of bright fabric, trailing a thin tangle of ribbons in one hand, announcing something about cupcake displays — and the moment scattered like leaves in a breeze.
The ache settled deeper in Spencer’s ribs — warm and heavy, like sunlight pooling in a place long starved of light.
He knew this day was for them — for all of them. For the team, the laughter, the easy folding back into old rhythms. It wasn’t the time to pull her aside. Not yet. And yet —
The hours drifted by in waves of brightness — voices and footfalls and the soft hush of papers moving beneath careful hands — and all through it, he found himself looking up without meaning to.
Again and again — as though the very air in the room carried her shape.
The sound of her laugh — low, rich, colored by something softer now. The shape of her voice weaving through conversations — a thread of familiar music. The curve of her mouth when she teased Morgan, the glint in her eye when she nudged Emily mid-joke. The easy tilt of her head, the slight catch of her hair at her shoulder as she moved.
The bullpen seemed to hum at the edges — bright with a different kind of light — as though her return had altered the very current of the space.
And Spencer — he remembered every version of her.
The sharp, brilliant one who could outthink anyone in the room. The quiet one, thoughtful between cases, always half-smiling over the rim of her mug. The steady presence by his side on late nights when the hours blurred.
And this — this new version now — was both familiar and new. Wiser. Sharper at the edges. But still — her.
And he — he was still him.
Still caught somewhere between the wanting and the fear — between the pull of everything unsaid and the weight of years carried alone.
The words pressed at him like a tide — slow and relentless.
I loved you before you left. I love you still. I waited.
But for now — he only watched.
The day drifted into late afternoon — the kind of soft, golden hour when the light slants lower and time seems to slow.
Sunlight stretched long across the floor, warmer now — honeyed gold pooling between the desks, casting soft-edged shadows across the walls. The hum of conversation had quieted to something looser, more languid — voices dipping, movements slower in the mellow light.
Files had been filed, coffee cups rinsed and set in neat rows along the counter.
JJ glanced at the clock with a reluctant sigh, gathering her things. “Henry’s got soccer this evening,” she said, looping her scarf around her neck. “But I’ll see you all tomorrow.”
Morgan slung his bag over one shoulder, lingering a beat longer than usual. “You sure you don’t want a ride?” he asked. “Gym can wait.”
Y/N smiled, warm. “I’m good. I’ve got a few things to finish up.”
Emily and Garcia hovered nearby, coats in hand — exchanging a glance that held more than a little protest.
“We could stay,” Garcia offered brightly. “Help you settle in — cupcakes and admin, a perfect pairing.”
Y/N laughed softly, shaking her head. “Go — really. I’ll see you all tomorrow.”
Even Rossi, coming down the stairs from upstairs consults, paused with a glance toward her desk — a thoughtful nod.
And so, slowly, the bullpen began to empty — not with the usual rush of closing time, but with the unspoken warmth of a day well-spent, a missing piece restored.
And Spencer — he stayed, notebook still open before him. A file untouched beneath his hand.
But he wasn’t looking at the clock, nor at the quiet stacks of work still waiting. His gaze drifted — again and again — toward the far side of the bullpen. Toward her. He’d told himself it was to finish organizing some paperwork — but his stack of files remained exactly where it had been for the past hour.
Y/N lingered after the others — a quiet, steady presence in the glowing hush of the near-empty bullpen. She moved with an easy rhythm — unpacking, resettling, reordering small pieces of her space that had been left behind. A drawer sliding open with a soft scrape. Papers shuffled into neat stacks. The quiet click of a pen against the rim of a ceramic mug.
The last spill of sunlight caught at her sleeves, gilding the fine movements of her hands, weaving a soft glow along the curve of her shoulder, the slope of her cheek.
And still — he stayed.
Spencer’s gaze drifted to the clock.
He could leave. He should leave. The hour had tipped toward evening — most of the building hushed now, shadows lengthening at the edges. But the thought of walking away — of leaving her to this space alone, on her first day back — pulled sharp beneath his ribs.
A quiet weight pressed into his chest — insistent.
So he hovered — notebook still open, the pen unmoving between his fingers, resting forgotten in the waning light.
Waiting.
Finally — after what felt to Spencer like an endless moment stretched thin with wanting — Y/N glanced up from her desk. A loose strand of hair had fallen near her temple; she brushed it back with an absent, graceful motion, fingertips trailing lightly against her cheek.
Her gaze lifted — slow, searching — and found him across the quiet bullpen.
Something in her expression softened — a warmth blooming there, quiet and sure.
Her smile unfurled — slow at first, as though drawn from somewhere deeper — the curve of her mouth lifting, high and soft at one corner, deepening into that familiar shape that never failed to undo him. A glimmer of mischief danced at the edges. The faintest hint of dimples appeared — fleeting, delicate — like a secret only just revealed. And then — her voice, low and warm, the words wrapped in that smile: “Are you waiting for me, Doctor Reid?”
The sound of it — the shape of her smile as she said it — struck him with such sudden force that he almost forgot to breathe.
Color rose to his ears — swift, helpless. He opened his mouth — faltered for half a second — then gave the smallest, surest nod.
“Yes.”
Her smile deepened — slow, knowing — the kind of smile that lived somewhere between affection and tease, the kind that could warm a man to his bones. Her dimples ghosted faintly at the corners, eyes bright beneath the soft spill of late afternoon light.
“Well,” she said — voice low, rich with quiet amusement — “if you help me put these away…” She tipped her head, letting the smallest pause hang in the air, just enough to draw him in. “… we’ll both get to leave faster. Sound fair?”
He was on his feet before thought could catch up with motion — breath quick in his chest.
“Fair,” he said — and even he could hear the faint, uneven edge in his voice.
Together — side by side now — they moved around her desk. Small, familiar motions — but softened somehow, slowed by something neither of them spoke aloud. They sorted through scattered files — fingers brushing the edges of well-thumbed pages. They slid books into place along low shelves, the gentle scrape of spines against wood the only sound between them.
Now and then — unintentional, but inevitable — their hands touched. Barely there at first — a passing graze of fingertips. Then again — the soft press of knuckles, warm skin meeting skin for a breath too long to be entirely accidental. Each contact sent a bright flicker through Spencer’s nerves — sharp, electric, as though every inch of him had tuned itself to her presence.
The quiet between them thrummed — not empty, not strained — but full, vibrant beneath the surface. Companionable. Steady. And beneath it all — something more.
When the last binder clicked softly into place on the shelf, Y/N exhaled a quiet breath — one of those small, wordless sounds that seemed to settle into the room like a finishing note.
“Done,” she said, straightening with a little stretch — shoulders rolling back, arms loosening. She reached for her coat and bag, fingers brushing along the back of her chair as she gathered the last few things.
Spencer stood where he was — pulse thick in his throat, heart thudding hard enough that it seemed to echo in his ears.
The soft light had deepened around them now — long bands of gold stretching low across the bullpen, casting the floor in warm, drowsy glow.
She glanced at him — smile tugging faintly at her mouth. “Still keeping me company?” she teased gently, voice soft beneath the hush of the near-empty space.
He swallowed — words tangling.
“Of course,” he managed — and then, after a beat too long: “Didn’t want you to be the last one here.”
Her smile deepened, the kind that caught at the corners of her eyes. “Chivalrous,” she said — voice warm, amused. She slipped her coat on, the fabric falling clean against her frame, and adjusted the strap of her bag over one shoulder.
Spencer forced himself to breathe.
She moved toward the edge of the bullpen — glancing back once with a quiet tilt of her head. “Come on, Doctor,” she said lightly. “I’m officially calling it a day.”
His feet carried him before thought caught up — steps falling into an easy rhythm beside her as they crossed the room together. The hush of their movements echoed faintly in the open space — the last few murmurs from elsewhere in the building fading into quiet.
At her side — so close now, every breath filled with her nearness — Spencer could feel the words pressing harder against his ribs. It had been building all day — rising with every glance, every soft word, every brush of her hand. He could feel it now — like a storm gathering just beneath his skin — sharp, bright, impossible to ignore.
And yet — beside him, Y/N seemed unaware — or if she noticed at all, only the faintest trace: the way his voice caught, the way his gaze drifted and returned too quickly.
She glanced up at him as they walked, brow lifting ever so slightly.
“You’re quiet,” she said softly — a question folded beneath the words.
He swallowed, pulse kicking hard.
“Just… tired,” he offered — voice thinner than he meant, pulse still racing beneath his skin.
She let the words drift for a beat, then smiled — soft, easy, gaze warm beneath the fall of her lashes.
“Yeah,” she murmured, voice low. “Me too.” A pause — her smile tilting slightly, something quieter beneath it. “But… I’m really glad to be back.”
The words settled into the air between them — warm, certain — and somehow it made the ache in Spencer’s chest bloom all the sharper.
They reached the elevator.
She pressed the call button — the soft chime rising in the quiet hallway, a bright sound against the hush.
Spencer’s breath caught — the weight of everything unsaid closing tight around him. He couldn’t hold it much longer.
The doors slid open — slow, smooth, with a soft mechanical sigh. They stepped inside, just the two of them now, the space small, quiet, close.
Spencer’s pulse pounded in his ears — hard, relentless, as though the very beat of his heart might give him away.
The words pressed higher in his throat — sharp, breathless — no longer some distant ache, but a rising tide he could barely contain.
Next breath. Next second.
He wouldn’t be able to hold them back.
The elevator doors closed — a hush of metal against metal — sealing them in.
The soft whir of machinery faded, leaving behind a silence so complete it seemed to thrum in the air between them.
They stood side by side — two familiar shapes cast against the brushed steel walls — the lines of their reflections blurred and mingling in the dim light.
The quiet pressed close — thicker with each passing second — as if the very air had shifted, grown heavier, charged with something unspoken.
Neither spoke.
Neither moved.
A breath held — stretched thin, trembling at the edges. Spencer’s throat worked. His chest rose, breath shallow and uneven.
The words clawed their way higher — fierce, unstoppable — scraping at the back of his throat with each beat of his racing heart.
He could feel his hands trembling faintly at his sides — useless to stop it now.
He stared ahead — eyes fixed, jaw tight — knowing he was standing on the edge of something he could no longer step back from.
The ache had risen past longing, past reason — to the bright, unbearable verge of action.
Now, the thought pulsed through him, urgent, wild. Now, or not at all.
And then — impulse overtook thought.
Before he could second-guess himself — before logic could drag him back — Spencer moved.
Hand darting forward, fast, breathless — and pressed the small red button marked EMERGENCY STOP.
The elevator gave a soft shudder — a low, mechanical sigh — and halted mid-floor.
Stillness swept in — sudden, absolute.
Y/N blinked, the movement catching her off-guard, and turned toward him.
“Spencer?”
Her voice was quiet — touched with confusion, the faintest edge of surprise. Her brows drew in softly — a furrow between them, delicate and unguarded — as her gaze searched his face. Her lips parted — as though to ask, to steady the moment — but the words seemed to catch before they reached the air.
The shift in the room — in him — was too sharp, too immediate. Something was happening — something rising between them like a current — and she could feel it now.
The nerves in the air brushed against her skin — light, electric — pulling at her breath, at her heart.
He turned to face her fully — heart hammering so violently it felt as though it might tear free of his chest — nerves raw beneath skin that had gone too tight, too thin to hold any of it in.
Her brows were still faintly drawn — gaze searching, lips parted — the air between them charged and trembling.
“I can’t—”
His voice broke, the first word catching sharp against his throat.
He swallowed — breath ragged, chest rising too fast — tried again: “I can’t not say it anymore.”
Her eyes widened — something in them catching and deepening — but she said nothing. The moment held — bright, unbearable — as though the space itself had narrowed down to a single, burning point between them.
And then the words broke loose.
They came in a rush — raw, breathless, tumbling past restraint — too fast to stop now, too sharp to soften:
“I loved you before you left.”
His voice shook — low, frayed, as though dragged from the deepest part of him.
“I thought maybe— maybe if you were gone long enough, I’d move on. Forget. Or… or at least learn how to live with it.”
A harsh breath — head shaking once, fierce, broken.
“But I didn’t.”
Another breath — sharper now, ragged edges rising beneath the words: “I couldn’t.”
The confession twisted out of him — building, breaking: “I asked Garcia for updates every week — every single week — until even she started looking at me with pity.”
His hands had begun to shake — fingers flexing, useless at his sides.
“Every day, really— some days twice, three times— I just— I needed to know. I needed to know you were safe.”
A breathless laugh — hollow, aching:
“I made her hack into the Interpol Liaison logs. I knew what cities you were in even when I wasn’t supposed to. I memorized the dates of your deployments, your rotations. Every time you flew out — every time you landed — I knew.”
The words were tumbling faster now — heat rising in his face, in his chest — years of longing and restraint fracturing at the seams.
“I thought about you every morning,” he gasped, voice trembling. “Every night. Every time my phone buzzed I thought — maybe it’s her — maybe she’ll call—”
A sharp breath — and then the last broke from him, hoarse:
“I—”
But the words choked off, chest too tight to finish.
He stood trembling — gaze locked on hers — every muscle pulled taut, breath coming fast and uneven.
He had said it.
Finally.
All of it — ripped loose, bare and bleeding in the open space between them.
And Y/N —
She stared at him — lips parted, breath catching audibly now — as though the weight of what he’d given her had struck too deep to move. Something burned behind her eyes — deep, bright, unspoken — rising to the surface, fierce and fragile all at once.
The air between them cracked — the moment stretched to the breaking point — breathless, unbearable.
Her eyes — still locked on his — shone now, wide and burning, mouth parted on a breath that never quite formed a word.
And Spencer —
Something in him finally snapped.
A surge — a reckless, all-consuming need — rose up from somewhere deeper than thought, deeper than breath — a force that obliterated everything but the aching pull of her standing there before him.
He moved — fast, unstoppable — hands catching her shoulders, dragging her hard into him.
And then — his mouth was on hers.
No hesitation, no gentleness — just a crash of lips to lips, heat and breath and desperate, reckless want.
The force of it sent her stumbling back — but even as her spine hit the cool steel of the elevator wall, Spencer’s hand came up fast — cradling the back of her head, fingers threading through her hair to shield her from the impact — as though some fierce, protective part of him couldn’t bear for her to feel even the smallest hurt.
A faint gasp broke from her lips — not from pain, but from shock, from breathless surprise — from the wild, consuming heat of him.
And then — he was kissing her again — harder, deeper — no space, no air, nothing but this.
He swallowed the sound with his mouth — not daring to stop, not daring to let a single inch of space fall between them now that he had her.
His hands tangled in her hair — fingers twisting in the soft strands, pulling just enough to tip her face up beneath his — mouth slanting harder against hers, teeth grazing, lips parted wide.
Her hands came up in a rush — fisting in the front of his cardigan, dragging him closer — as though she would climb inside him if the laws of the world would only allow it.
Breath collided — hot, uneven, hungry — between kisses that deepened with every ragged pull.
Her lips — soft, swollen, trembling beneath his — moved with him, against him — gasps breaking loose only to be caught again, swallowed whole.
Their noses brushed — the angle of her jaw sharp beneath his palm, the shape of her mouth opening wider for him, breath shaking between every frantic meeting of lips and tongue.
Teeth caught — hers sinking sharply into the soft swell of his lower lip — not enough to break skin, but enough to tear a low, wrecked sound from deep in his chest.
A sound he didn’t know he could make — half gasp, half growl — ruined, desperate.
And then he was gone.
A surge of heat shot through him — blinding, primal — and in the next heartbeat, he slammed her harder against the wall — body pinning hers in full, no space left between them, the sheer force of it dragging a sharp gasp from her mouth.
But not pain — never pain — only shock, only wild, breathless want.
And he swallowed it — devoured the sound with a bruising kiss, lips crashing to hers again, open and hungry and without mercy.
The heat between them flared — burning now — a helpless, relentless tide.
His hands slid down — hard and possessive — gripping her waist, her hips, fingers digging in tight enough that he could feel the shape of her bones beneath the fabric.
Tighter — closer — more.
If he could have dragged her through the wall, he would have — anything to close the impossible ache of distance that still lived inside him.
She was gasping now — broken, high little sounds spilling between them — breath catching in her throat as her fingers clawed into his hair, fists tightening until the roots burned.
Every pull, every desperate grip only feeding the fire in him — pulling a fresh, wrecked sound from his throat.
Her head tipped back, mouth opening wider beneath his — trembling, hungry — letting him kiss her deeper, harder, until he was half-mad with the feel of her lips, her teeth, the breath she couldn’t catch.
“Spencer—”
The sound of his name — wrecked, high, barely shaped — shattered what little remained of his restraint.
He caught it with his mouth — crushed it — swallowing her voice in a kiss so deep, so savage it stole what little air remained between them.
Tongue sliding against hers — breath ragged — teeth scraping — hands everywhere now, sliding up, curling into her back, gripping her shoulder, burying again in her hair — anchoring her to him as though the sheer force of need alone might collapse the years they’d spent apart.
Their noses bumped, dragged sideways, breaths tearing loose, uneven and wild —
More.
He couldn’t stop.
He wouldn’t stop — not until he’d kissed her so deeply, so completely that the ache in his chest finally broke apart beneath it.
Not until she was gasping against his mouth — trembling in his arms — her nails dragging down the back of his neck with helpless, reckless need —
Not until there was nothing left of either of them but this — lips and teeth and breath and years of longing, burning wild and bright between the steel walls of the elevator.
Time fractured — the small space between them burning, pulsing with a heat neither could withstand.
It wasn’t a kiss.
It was everything.
Every unspoken word. Every sleepless night. Every breathless moment spent wanting and waiting and knowing they could not have — until now.
Now, the dam had broken. And there was no going back.
When the kiss finally broke — if it could even be called a break — it wasn’t by choice.
It was because neither of them could breathe.
Because lungs burned and chests heaved and their bodies trembled so violently it was a wonder they were still standing.
Spencer’s forehead dropped to hers — too dizzy to hold himself upright — breath tearing ragged from his throat.
Her hands were still tangled in his hair — trembling, clutching — and her face, flushed and wet, tilted helplessly up to his.
They were both shaking — wrecked — skin damp with sweat, tears mingled where cheeks brushed, lips swollen and raw from the sheer violence of what had just passed between them.
Neither could move.
Neither could speak.
They stood there — locked against the cool steel of the elevator wall — heartbeats crashing wildly in their chests, breath gasping against each other’s skin.
Spencer’s hands were splayed against her back — fists still curled in her top, holding on as though if he let go for even a second, the world itself might split apart beneath them.
Her breath hitched — a high, shaking sound that caught in her throat.
Slowly — slowly — she dragged in a trembling gasp of air.
And then — voice so faint it barely rose above a whisper, broken and wrecked in the quiet space —
“Maybe…”
Another breath — another tremble — her cheek brushing against his, damp with tears, mouth still parted, lips flushed and swollen beneath the faintest catch of a breath.
“… maybe we should… get out of here…”
A soft, dazed sound slipped from her throat — a ghost of a laugh, breathless, half-wrecked —
“… before Garcia starts wondering why we’ve been stuck for twenty minutes.”
The words barely reached him — muffled, distant — lost in the blood still roaring in his ears, in the breath he couldn’t catch, in the wild rush still hammering through his chest.
For a moment he could only stare — blinking, dazed, heart crashing.
And then — the smallest breath of a laugh broke loose from him — sharp, wrecked, awed — as if he couldn’t quite believe any of this was real, couldn’t believe the feel of her still trembling beneath his hands.
The sound tangled with his next breath — jagged, uneven — as he leaned in again, lips brushing hers once more.
Not a kiss — not quite — just the barest press — soft, aching, impossibly full — as though he needed to feel her again, needed to be sure she was still there beneath him.
“I don’t care,” he whispered — voice hoarse, torn, shaking with the force of everything still rising in him.
And neither did she.
At last — with fingers that trembled faintly — Spencer reached out, releasing the small red button beneath his hand.
The elevator gave a soft jolt — a faint hum rising as the emergency stop disengaged.
The car began to descend once more — slow, smooth — but neither of them moved.
Not yet.
Spencer still stood close — chest barely lifting with shallow breath, hands resting at her waist, fingers splayed wide, reluctant to loosen their hold.
Y/N’s hands lingered in his hair — fingers soft now, slow, unhurried — as though neither of them could quite bear the thought of breaking the fragile space between them.
His forehead still leaned faintly against hers — breaths mingling in the small hush of the car, both of them flushed, damp with tears and sweat, trembling in the aftermath of something too large to name.
When he finally drew back — just barely, just enough to see her — his eyes were dark, soft, shining with a rawness she had never seen in him before.
Open — utterly unguarded.
Voice low, hoarse, still uneven:
“I missed you.”
The simple truth of it struck through her like a blade — sharp and bright, pulling a soft, helpless ache from her chest.
Her lips parted — breath catching — before her own voice broke free, quiet and full:
“I missed you, too.”
Spencer still hadn’t moved.
His hands remained at her waist — fingers curled tight, thumbs pressed deep into the sharp curve of her hip bones, as though if he loosened his grip by even a fraction she might simply slip away again.
She could feel it — the heat of him through the fabric, the strain in his hold — the faint tremor still running through his fingers.
A breathless sound caught in her throat — half a laugh, half a sigh — lips curving faintly despite the wreck of her heart.
And then — something shifted.
Spencer’s breath hitched — chest rising too fast — eyes flickering down to where his hands still gripped her.
As though, in that moment, the full weight of what had just happened — the recklessness of it, the years of want breaking loose — crashed into him all at once.
The flush rose quick and high in his cheeks — the faintest spark of his old shyness rising beneath the wreckage of want.
Fingers trembling harder now, caught between holding and releasing, apology and need.
When he finally spoke — voice barely a rasp, breaking at the edges: “I don’t want to let go.”
She drew in a soft, uneven breath — heart thudding so hard it hurt. Her smile faltered — not fading, but shifting — something deeper flickering behind her eyes, pulling the breath from her lungs. Fingers still tangled in his hair, she leaned in just slightly — enough that her forehead brushed his again, lips near his ear.
“Then don’t,” she whispered — voice soft as breath, shaking with truth she couldn’t swallow.
For a moment — the smallest space of time — neither of them moved.
His hands remained tight at her hips — knuckles white — her body held fast against him, the tremble in his fingers betraying just how much he was still drowning in it.
Her breath broke against his neck — warm, damp, trembling.
And still — no part of him wanted to let go.
Not when it had taken this long.
Not after what had just passed between them.
The air hummed with it — that fragile, golden hush — both of them caught, undone, too lost in the aftermath to break away.
The soft chime broke through the quiet — a bright, sharp sound — followed by the slow, mechanical hiss of the elevator doors sliding open.
Cooler air brushed in — a sudden shift, a reminder of the world waiting just beyond.
Both of them blinked — as though surfacing from somewhere too deep, too far beneath the moment.
Spencer’s hands loosened at her hips — reluctantly, fingers still trembling.
Y/N let out a breathless little laugh — half dazed, half bright — voice low and warm against his ear.
“Well,” she murmured, lashes lifting as she glanced toward the open doors, “I guess we can’t exactly live in here.”
That tugged a rough, unsteady breath from his chest — something between a laugh and a groan, eyes dragging over her face like he couldn’t quite stop.
“I wouldn’t mind,” he managed — voice still wrecked, hoarse — but the faintest curve pulled at the corner of his mouth.
She grinned — still breathless, still flushed — one brow lifting, teasing soft and easy between them again.
“You’re going to get me into trouble, Doctor Reid,” she whispered, fingers brushing lightly against his chest as she eased back a fraction. “And it’s only my first day back.”
He huffed a quiet laugh — wrecked, bright-eyed — and stepped with her toward the open doors.
Together — breathless, still too close — they finally stepped out into the hall.
The world beyond the elevator was quiet — hushed, late — the light cooler here, shadows long against the floor.
But something had shifted between them — something that could never be pulled back now.
Spencer’s hand hovered at her lower back as they walked — not quite touching, but near enough that the heat of it ghosted against her spine.
Y/N glanced at him — lips curved, eyes still bright with everything unspoken.
“You know,” she said — voice low, teasing — “if anyone saw us right now…”
She trailed off — the grin in her voice unmistakable.
Spencer huffed a breath — half a laugh, half a groan — hand finally giving in, fingers brushing soft against the small of her back.
“Then I guess,” he murmured — eyes catching hers, dark and soft and wrecked — “they’d finally know.”
Her heart flipped — sharp and warm.
The teasing faltered, just for a breath — replaced by something deeper, something older and more certain.
She smiled — slow, bright — and let her hand slip into his, fingers twining there like it had always belonged.
They walked in silence for a few steps — breath still too fast, skin still tingling — neither quite ready to let the moment fade.
Then — quiet, low, voice still rough from everything he couldn’t say — Spencer spoke:
“Are you hungry?”
She looked at him — brows lifting faintly — that familiar spark rising in her gaze.
“Starving,” she whispered.
His mouth curved — soft, wrecked, utterly undone.
“Come over,” he said — no hesitation, no fear now. Just truth. Just wanting. “I’ll make something.”
Her fingers tightened in his — smile deepening — voice warm as the new light between them.
“Okay,” she said.
And together — hand in hand — they kept walking down the quiet hall, toward whatever waited next.

happy reading <3
The morning sun comes through the window, peeking through everglow slightly illuminating the room, casting a light glow over the walls and a sleeping quinn. Quinns body lays partially over mine, our legs intertwined together. his face nuzzled into my neck, soft snores leave his mouth as he sleeps soundly against me.
There weren't many days where I'd wake up before Quinn, his schedule keeping and waking him up at the early hours of the day. Ever since the hockey season ended in a heartbreaking loss in the playoffs, he'd been sleeping more, getting the much deserved rest he’s needed. Quinn wanted away from hockey, from Vancouver, so he decided heading to the lake house earlier than usual to get away from everyone would be the fix.
Which leads us to the position we're in now, my hands moving slowly up and down his back as he still sleeps soundly against me. Quinn always looks the most peaceful when he’s sleeping, so at peace and calm.
I feel quinns body shift slightly besides me, feeling him roll away from me, my body already feeling cold without his warmth beside me. I sit up in the bed, watching Quinn stretch and yawn himself awake, rubbing his eyes like a little kid before he turns to me with a soft smile on his face.
“Good morning” he says, his voice thick with sleep.
“Good morning handsome” I smile back “sleep well?”
“Mhm” he mumbles out as he makes his way to me from across the bed, grabbing my thighs pulling me on top of him.
“Hi” i giggle from above him
“Hi baby” he grins at me, his hands finding my neck pulling me down into a sweet kiss. My hands lay flat against his chest as I melt into the kiss. After a few moments I pull away to catch my breath, and to get a better look at him. The glow of the sun now being at its brightest, covering most of the room. Highlighting Quinn's body, his golden brown locks and blue eyes shining brightly in the glow.
“You look so pretty” I say, as I bring my hands to his cheeks, running my fingers over his jaw, over every scar. Tracing and taking in everything part of him, memorizing every line like I've never seen them before. Quinn blushes at my complement, nuzzling his face into my hand, a smile breaking through on his features as he does so.
“Thank you baby” he says, bringing his head back to lay against the pillow looking back at me. “What do you want to do today?” his hands running across my bare thighs, his touch spreading warmth throughout my body.
“Could we go on the boat?” i ask
“Is that what you want to do?” he asks me again.
“Mhm, yes. I even brought a new book to read to you, just for this, " I say with a smile.
Quinn loves when i read to him, the peaceful feeling of being on the boat, the waves flowing beneath would be the perfect setting.
“Alright you've convinced me, maybe we could even have lunch on the boat too? If you're up for that?”
“That's fine with me, just want to be around you” I say before dropping my head into his neck, breathing in his scent, his arms circling around my waist pulling my body flush against his.
“Okay baby” he says into my hair
“Okay come on, let's get up. '' I said, lifting myself from him, patting his chest before swinging my legs off of him getting out of bed.
“I'm cominggggg” Quinn says from the bed, as I make my way to the bathroom, turning back around to see him lying face down in the middle of the bed, his arms and legs fanning out across the bed.
Giggles rip through my body as I look at his childlike state, shaking my head as I take another glance at him before turning around heading to the bathroom to start getting ready for my day.
Taking a quick shower, throwing on a random swimsuit, before heading down stairs to start making lunch for myself and Quinn to take on the boat.
Deciding on sandwiches and chips, with some fruit would be the best option for lunch. Just as I'm packing everything up I see Quinn coming down the stairs, in a pair of black swim trunks and a Canucks shirt.
'What did you pack for lunch?’ he asks, pressing a kiss to the side of my head, walking behind me to the fridge to grab bottles of water before turning back the counter, putting the bottles of water in the cooler.
“Sandwiches, chips and fruit, is that okay with you?” I say as I place the food into the cooler along with the water, closing the top before looking up at quinn.
“Yeah that's fine with me baby, perfect” he says leaning in for a quick kiss
“Do you have everything you need?” he says while grabbing the cooler from the counter walking towards the back door
“Yes I think so, let me go grab my bag from the couch then I'm ready” I say smiling at him, making my way to the living room grabbing my bag that has my book, sunglasses and other things in it, pulling it over my shoulder before following Quinn out the back door.
Following him down the dock towards the boat, reaching the boat, Quinn got on first placing the cooler down before turning around offering me his hand, helping me step on the boat.
Walking over, placing my things on one of the seats, turning around, taking a look at the lake, the site never fails to take my breath away. I feel Quinn's arms circle my waist, pulling my body against his.
“Where do you wanna go today?” he asks me, his chin resting on my shoulder as he looks out at the lake.
“Doesn't matter me” i say turning around wrapping my arms around his neck, “take us where the wind takes you”
“That was so corny” he laughs
“Yeah it sounded better in my head..” i say laughing along with him
“It was still cute” he says, giving a kiss to my forehead, turning around making his way to the dock, untying the boat from the dock.
“Okay ma'am we’re about to take off, all passengers please remain in your seats” he says with a smile spreading along his features.
“Yes caption” I say, saluting him, taking a seat on the boat.
Making his way to the cockpit sitting down, turning on the boat before taking off along the water, the wind blowing in my hair as we ride across the lake
The boat rocks gently to the calm waves that run through the lake, Quinn docking the boat, now at a standstill in the middle of the lake. The bright summer sun beating on our skin, the warmth casting over my body as I grab my book, before settling back in my seat. Moving a pillow to rest under my neck and part of my upper back, laying down to rest myself against it, pulling my knees up, so i can rest my book on my thighs opening it book, i begin reading,
The romance novel pulls me into an alternate reality so deep that I forget that I'm even on the boat with Quinn until his voice breaks through the silence.
“I missed it out here” he says his eyes looking around the lake taking in it like it's his first time seeing it, “i forgot how peaceful it is out here” he continues.
“ It's so peaceful out here, it's nice to see you so relaxed” I say to Quinn, looking at him above the pages of my book.
“I thought you were supposed to read to me baby?” he asks
“Come over here” I say with a smile, opening my legs so he can rest in between them. his footsteps padding across the boat, as he lays himself between my legs, his warm skin laying against mine, his arms circling around my waist as he pulls himself closer to me.
“Comfortable?” I say looking down at him, his head resting against my stomach, Quinn shaking his head up and down in response.
“Good. okay, now where was I?” my eyes searched for where I left off on my page, finding my spot again, taking a deep breath before I began reading. My eyes glance down every few minutes to see if Quinn is asleep or not, occasionally feeling his fingers trace down my sides, as I continue to read to him. Just as I'm getting to an interesting part in my chapter, I feel Quinn's body move lower against mine, not thinking anything of his movement. I continue reading.
Pausing to take a deep breath before reading the next line, I feel a warm kiss being placed right below my belly button, causing me to stop reading, lifting the book up, looking down at Quinn whose face is right in front of my covered core, his eyes locked with mine.
“What are you doing?” I ask slightly confused at his actions
“Nothing, just wanted to lay down here, keep reading for me baby”
“Okay” I say before licking my lips, picking up on the unread line.
I don't even make it through half the page before I feel Quinn pressing more kisses across my lower stomach, kissing all along the top of my bottoms. His fingers sliding under the ties on the slides pulling down slightly, rubbing his fingers along the skin under.
Clearing my throat before starting again, my brain struggling to register the words I'm reading, all of my focus on the man between my legs. My brain goes completely to mush, when I feel quinn pressed kisses against my covered core, my breath immediately hitching at the sudden touch.
“Quinn, i'm trying to read '' my eyes locking with his, a small smirk dances along his face.
“No ones stopping you from reading baby” he says, his fingers moving under the sides of my bottoms.
His hands move to pull on one of the strings that hold the left side of my bottom together, pulling it apart with one tug, repeating the same action on the other side, his eyes still locked with mine.
“Quinn '' my breath hitching, as he moved his thumbs under the now loosened fabric, peeling it back, exposing my bare cunt, the wind casting a slight breeze causing me to shutter when it hits my exposed center.
“Quinn” I say again, my voice slightly higher than the previous attempt, trying to get his attention.
“Yes?”
“What are you doing? I thought you wanted me to read to you?”
“I did, but now I want to hear that pretty mouth make some other noises,” he says, before grabbing the loosened bottoms from my body, throwing them somewhere on the boat. Grabbing the book out of my hands, closing it, throwing it in the same direction.
“Quinn, are you serious, I was reading!” I am slightly annoyed but turned on at the sudden change of Quinn's intentions.
“Shhhhhh, lay back and let me have a taste” his eyes locked with mine as he began tracing random shapes on the insides of my thighs, his hand inching closer and closer to my exposed cunt.
I couldn't help but comply with his words, his face inching closer and closer to my center, I felt his warm breath against my folds. His tongue darted out, licking a stripe down my center. My head falls back against the pillow, as he begins to lick at my folds. his hands pulling my thighs apart, gaining better access to my cunt.
His tongue finds my clit as he begins to run his tongue along the bud, my jaw falling slack as my hands grab his hair, needing something to stabilize myself with. As he continues to lap up my clit, like a popsicle on a hot summer day.
“Quinn, fuck” I moan out from above him, his movements never slowing running his tounge over every part of my cunt. The sound of him sucking up everybit of my wetness, is like music to my ears.
“Taste so good baby” he mutters against my cunt, before diving back in, his hands pulling my thighs further apart as he continues to devour my cunt.
“Quinn don't stop please” my chest rising and falling quickly as I struggle to catch my breath. My body feels like it's on fire, not just from the heat of the sun on my skin but from the feeling of Quinn’s burning touch.
His tongue continues to thrust in and out of my weeping hole, my moans growing louder and louder as I feel myself getting closer to my peak.
“Fuck look at you baby” pulling his face away from my cunt, bringing two of his fingers dragging them through my cunt, my wetness coating his fingers.
“Look at that baby” he says now looking up at me, holding the two fingers in front of him, “do you wanna taste?” he asks me
Nodding my head in a yes, Quinn brings his fingers to my mouth pushing my lips apart, shoving them into my mouth slowly. My tongue swirls around the digits, the taste of my cunt wrapping around each of my taste buds.
My eyes are locked with Quinn’s as I continue to suck on his fingers, his eyes hooded with mine, blown with lust and he looks up at me. He slowly pulls the fingers out of my mouth, a string of saliva following them. Tracing his fingers down my stomach down to my core, before running them across my cunt, my body itching around nothing from the action.
“Quinn” i whine
“What baby?” he says as continues to run his fingers along my cunt.
“Do you want my fingers? Is that what you want?”
“Yes fuck please” i whine again, my hands finding his hair again pulling it, hoping that, that will urge him along.
“So needy baby” he says laughing against my cunt, placing a kiss to my slit before pushing two fingers into my cunt.
My head dropping back instantly, my body feeling full, as he starts thrusting his fingers in and out. Broken moans are falling from my lips, my eyes closed as my body moves against his. Moving my hips to help meet his thrusts.
“Right there right there” I moaned, my legs beginning to shake as I felt myself about to come.
“Quinn” i whine out, as he attaches his mouth to my clit, rolling his tongue over it, as his fingers continue to fuck me.
“Please dont stop fuck” lifting my head to look at quinn, the sight of him inbetween my legs, mouth wrapped around my clit, as i watch his fingers thrust in and out me, takes my breath away.
Quinn's eyes looking up, locking them with mine, his movements never stilling. My hips continue to move against his, the burning feeling in the pit of my stomach continues to grow with every touch, thrust, everything setting my body a blaze.
One last curl of his fingers sends me into a frenzy, my head dropping back against the pillow, my month agape but no words are coming out. My legs shaking as I come, my hands still in Quinn's hair pulling the locks so hard that it probably hurts. My vision clouds over as my orgasm takes over my body.
I don't even realize Quinn's fingers have left my body, until I feel him pressing kisses along my neck. My eyes opened slowly, my chest still rising and falling, struggling to catch my breath and find my words.
“Are you with me, pretty girl?” Quinn says, looking down at me, pushing hair that's fallen into my face back.
“Yeah i think so” bringing my hands to his face, pulling him down into a kiss.
“Did so good for me” he says once he pulls back, “always so good to me” he says peppering kisses all over my face.
“I love you” i mumble to him
“I love you more” rubbing small circles on my sides, as he looks at me, a wide smile on his face.
“Can you go grab my book?” I ask him with a small pout on my lips
“Oh im not done with you yet” quinn says with a smirk playing his face, before flipping us over, my hips now straddling his lap.
“I think this is next to go” pulling at my top, undoing the strings in the back pulling it from my body tossing it somewhere in the boat, my top now completely bare to him.
“Now where was i?” he says licking his lips, before crashing ours together.

EVENTIDES' EVERGLOW
"HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN YOUR PURPOSE? LET ME REMIND YOU."
greetings, mortals! you all have been cordially invited to attend athena’s and ares' annual god games, the eventides’ everglow, where individuals have the chance to prove their strength (of both body and mind) in challenges that no ordinary mortal could withstand.
as stated by the great god of wisdom, athena, all spectators must sign up first in order to attend!
“RUTHLESSNESS IS MERCY UPON OURSELVES!”
rules.
i. first, you must send a message to the temple of the wind god. in your message, please list the name of your desired contestant, choose their challenge, and choose 3 of their opponents. after you have done so, the temple keeper will read over your message and hand you your ticket to the games!
ii. during the games, everyone will have a chance to vote on which hero gets to progress and which does not. this means, all spectators must be present for each round of the games!
iii. the contestants will compete in teams of 4. four individuals will face a challenge together, but it’s every man for themselves. they can cooperate with each other, but in the end, one winner must emerge victorious. whoever is left standing at the very end is the reigning champion of the games and brings glory to the god they’re representing!
iv. before submitting your message to the temple keeper, please ensure you have read this post first.
v. this event will only be hosting characters from genshin and honkai: star rail.
[ SEATS TAKEN : 11/15 ]
“YOU WANT BATTLE? I'LL GIVE YOU WAR.”
( a list of the challenges all the contestants are to participate in! )
• THE STORM — angst
• THE CYCLOPS — soulmates au
• THE MINOTAUR — enemies to lovers
• THE MASKED FOOLS — fluff/humor
• SCYLLA — unrequited love
• BEYOND THE SKY CHOIR — reincarnation
• THE HEXENZIRKEL — harry potter au
• THE SEVEN ARCHONS — regula solis epoch au (see this post)
• THE TITANS — percy jackson au
• THE LABYRINTH — until then au
“HE IS HALF OF MY SOUL, AS THE POETS SAY.”
footnotes.
first and foremost, thank you all for participating in this event! it took me a hell of a long time to work on, but it was fun regardless! i decided to put this note down here just in case anyone needed a simplified version of the rules (to avoid confusion). so basically, all you need to do is submit the name of a character from either genshin or hsr (make sure they're on the list of characters i write for first), then tell me which challenge from the above list you want them to complete, and then 3 opponents (ex.: "blade + the storm + dan heng, jing yuan, kafka"). at the end of the request, i'll give a brief overview of the challenge and how it went for the characters. then i will place a poll and you guys get to vote which character survived the challenge and which did not! note: only one character can make it out of the challenge alive ;). to avoid any further confusion, the aus listed next to the challenges are the type of fics you want me to write about the character you're requesting. the actual challenge, as i said before, will be briefly mentioned at the end of your request. if there are multiple requests for one challenge, then the next challenge will be briefly overviewed at the end. (ex.: someone requests "the hexenzirkel". i'll write a harry potter au with the character they asked for and then at the end of one of the requests, i'll give an overview of how a battle against the seven archons went instead!). this will be to avoid doubles, though since there are only 10 challenges and 15 seats, there's bound to be doubles lmao. if there are doubles with characters and that character previously lost in a challenge, then the overview at the end will include 4 different characters of my own choosing. otherwise it wouldn't rlly make sense yk. if you have any questions, my inbox is always open and i will be happy to answer them!

AUGUST.
Glimpses of the departed month go by as you reminisce by the sea.
ft. Kaedehara Kazuha x gn! reader.
cw/genre: fluff, romance.
I honestly don’t know how to feel about this piece… definitely not my best work, but I wrote it, so I’m posting it. I hope someone still likes it.
if you enjoy this, reblogs and comments help more than likes !
Blue.
Said alone, the word might have had a tendency for melancholy, cold, turbulence.
However, if anyone were to ask you right now, you’d deny every negative connotation the color might have ever been related to.
Because to you, blue was dusks by the sea; moments right after the last coppery rays had hidden behind the expanse of an ocean you could only wish to unveil all secrets of.
And perhaps, you liked this moment of day because the infinity of blue before you mirrored the feelings in your heart at ease.
Feelings of unbridled affection, boundless love.
For him.
Fair hair falls over his shoulders, like silk weaved out of stars, its tips illusory rose with the fading daylight. His eyes are closed against the marine breeze, flecks of moondust clinging to his lids, casting enchanting shadows over his cheeks. His shirt has been discarded, droplets sliding down his bare torso, as if he had bathed in a pool of starlight. A black leather cord rests against his tempting collarbones, a vibrant scarlet maple leaf charm dangling tantalizingly over his chest.
A dreamy sigh escapes your lips, mingling with the sounds of foamy waves lapping at the white sand.
Kazuha.
He was always nothing short of ethereal, but something about him in the dimming light of a late summer’s nightfall, felt inherently magical.
“I’m going to miss this, Kazuha.” You finally say, resting your chin on your boyfriend’s shoulder.
He gently leaves a kiss to your forehead, his hand finding yours over the towel you’re sitting on. Scars jut like jagged rocks against which waves break, in the same way lightning snuffed out a life dear to him all that time ago.
And yet, the smile on his lips is almost palpable when he says:
“We’ll be able to come back, my dove.” His thumb runs soothing circles over the back of your hand. “Before we realize, summer will greet us again.”
You chuckle. Kazuha had such a poetic way of approaching things; even when the sun went pitch black, he would forever remain a beacon of hope to you.
“I know, I know…” You clarify. “It’s just… I wish I had more free time to spend with you like this during the year…”
As much as autumn brought found memories and your beloved’s birthday, September always had a tendency to leave you yearning for the long days of summer.
Echoes of August replayed behind your eyelids every time you closed them, reminiscent of stolen instances held in the brief minutes in which the sky was dyed in shades of neither day or night.
Those eyes that held the suns of a million dawns focus on you. Starlight from constellations that will sleep soon seem to frame them, those long lashes fluttering in tune with your heart.
“I know, my angel…” Your lover utters, as he delicately tucks a strand of hair behind your ear. “I’d like to stay with you like this, for all eternity…” His stare of gentle embers takes you in.
His muse, his perfect love, his forever.
The samurai’s free hand reaches to cup your cheek, his touch, a dove’s first flight in its tenderness.
Beneath the darkening skies, you were the brightest star. Every lash, every pore and freckle, the everglow that fueled his verses.
“But we’ll always have the weekends,” He reassures, those fingers that penned the most romantic eulogies tracing your jawline, the column of your neck, your exposed collarbones.
Dilated pupils stare at his lips, images of kisses coated in ice cream and cocktails flashing through your dazed mind.
“And every summer after that.” The poet adds, noses mere millimeters away now, separated only by salt air and dying sunlight’s rust.
“Every summer.” You repeat.
Then, the magnetic force of both your desire-ridden lips reigns over, his kiss, an intoxicating collision.
Your hands lock behind Kazuha’s neck, pulling him closer. The droplets of sea water on him feel cool, flecks of stardust tattooing your skin in every place your bodies touch.
The wandering samurai’s lips are an expanding sunrise, and you, the tsunami that desperately reaches for his light-tinted heavens.
One of his hands sets on the soft sand, keeping him upright, while his scarred one tenderly cups your cheek. Your lean against him is soothing, healing, clear August skies, birdsong written in between retreating clouds.
Behind the undulating horizon, gold dyes silver.
Constellations begin to waltz far above, the lovers by the sea, their directing lyrics.
It’s a symphony about a season that will never die, its score inscribed in indelible blue ink in the heat of yours and Kazuha’s fervent kisses.

for the rest of our lives | jung jaehyun
not every little girl dreams of being Queen one day.
pairing: prince!jung jaehyun x princess!reader (female)
genre: royalty!au, angst, fluff (but you’ll miss it if you blink).
warnings: heavy depiction of anxiety.
author’s note: for the rest of our lives was one of the fics that marked my beginning as a tumblr writer, so starting this new but familiar journey with it feels just right.
listen to: hush by everglow (you’ll see that i’ve introduced quotes (in pink) from the song in the story).
The red roses are growing.
Spring has arrived earlier this year. The garden is splashed with pink, peach, and orange flowers that can be observed from the terrace of your room. The air is chilly, but not cruel like that of winter. It’s refreshing, it smells like a new start. Maybe that’s the reason why your mother insisted on celebrating the wedding in April.
Standing on the terrace, you follow your father’s figure. He’s walking down the pebble path; his crown, made of gold and rubies, shines under the sun. Even from the heights, you catch the smile hidden under his big, black beard. His eyes shine even more than his crown. He’s happy, how couldn’t he? His daughter, his only child, is finally getting married. One step closer to becoming Queen.
Behind him, your mother talks to one of the maids, pointing a graceful finger towards the garden. Two men carry a table, placing it exactly where your mum has asked. She nods, ordering them to go grab the chairs. Jae, your husband-to-be, wanted an outdoor banquet, and it's hard to tell him when he gives you that charming smile.
Your heart starts to pound faster in your ribcage. Husband-to-be. That’s a serious title. You press your palm against your chest, feeling the silky texture of your nightgown under it. You close your eyes and take a big breath in. Your life doesn’t feel yours anymore, yet, somehow, you’re living it. It’s like a dream you aren’t able to wake up from.
A light knock on your door startles you, but every worry that clouds your mind disappears the moment you hear your favorite voice coming from outside.
“It’s open, you can come in.”
Jaehyun is holding a bouquet as if it were his newborn child. It consists of roses, tulips, and baby's breath: a mix of your favorite flowers. You accept it, even if you think you don’t deserve it. You force yourself to look into his eyes, ever so soft. They make you feel better. Jaehyun always makes you feel better.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning.” Your tone is playful and so is his smile. “Isn’t it too early for flowers?”
“Any time is good to give my future wife flowers.” He leans forward to steal a kiss from you. You don’t fight it. “I’m going back home in a few minutes; I’ve got to pick up my grandma for tonight’s dinner.”
“So, you’re abandoning me.”
He doesn’t laugh, because you’re not joking. He has a younger brother who could bring Queen Haneul, but Jaehyun is the favorite grandchild, the one who will become King. You understand, in a way, but you wish he had said no for once. He knows how much you hate organizing big events.
“Don’t be like that.”
All in all, he knows you can’t stay angry at him, so his smile doesn’t disappear. Even his eyes are smiling, forming half-moons. Forget your father’s crown, Jaehyun’s smile is the shiniest thing you’ve seen today. “I'll be here in no time. You won’t even notice my absence.”
“I take that as a promise.”
You tiptoe to kiss him again. It’s not a little peck this time, but a proper kiss. Your lips capture his and you get lost in his arms, which hold your waist. Now, this is a dream you'd like to live in. You wish you could turn it into liquid and pour it into a bottle to take a sip whenever you need to. Here, in Jaehyun’s embrace, you feel safe, you feel happy, you feel free. Or, at least, the illusion of all of it.
Someone clears their throat, making you break apart with a jump. Jaehyun turns around with a straight back to find your maid. She looks down, avoiding eye contact and trying to hide her rosy cheeks.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, no, it’s fine.” You turn to Jaehyun. “I’ll see you tonight then.”
Jaehyun says his goodbyes, pressing his lips to avoid a laugh coming out, and the maid bows to him when he passes by.
“I’m sorry, princess, really sorry.” She repeats, getting in the room.
“You’ve got nothing to apologize for, Lami. We should’ve closed the door.”
Lami is still young, a bit inexperienced, and clumsy. But she’s also genuine and funny. It reminds you of when you were a child.
Lami makes your bed while you have breakfast, then walks to your closet to choose a dress for you.
“Would you like to wear yellow today, princess?”
You like yellow, so you agree. Leaving the flowers carefully on the couch, you get up and hop into the bathroom to brush your teeth and have a shower. The yellow dress makes you feel fresh, just like the flowers Jaehyun has gifted you. You sit in front of the dresser, noticing that a sleepless night has taken its toll: the bags under your eyes are huge.
You grab your hairbrush from the drawer. It's a gift from your late grandfather, who bought it during one of his trips. It’s made of gold and your initials are engraved on it. It’s so old that it’s all scratched, and several sows have fallen.
“Are you excited?” Lami asks, watching you brush your hair. It’s your favorite moment of the day. The sows against your scalp relax you, and God knows you need it today. “I can’t believe the wedding's tomorrow.”
Something inside you screams, but you remain silent. The moment has finally come.
You're getting married tomorrow.
Everything ends tomorrow.
“Should we move this table a bit to the left?” Your mother asks, authority disguised as a friendly request. The servants nod and move the table under your mother’s hawk gaze. “There, perfect. What do you think, sweetheart?”
“I think it looks perfect, mother. Everything’s perfect.”
You walk behind the Queen with arms crossed, pretending you care greatly about the position of the tables and the color of the tablecloths when, in fact, you couldn’t care less. You wish Jaehyun was here. Everything’s easier when he's by your side.
“I can’t believe it.” Your mother claps. “It feels like yesterday when you met Jae for the first time, doesn't it?”
The fond memory makes you smile. “I never imagined that I'd marry the boy who spilled his lemonade all over my dress, then tried to make the stain go away with water.”
“Isn’t it crazy?”
You can’t stand the proud look that your mother gives you. The fact that you'd be Queen one day was never a secret. A big grin appeared on your face anytime your parents brought up the subject, a grin that hid your true emotions. It was your destiny, and you had learned to accept the life that came with it.
A life trapped inside an iridescent crystal cage, always able to look out but never allowed to leave.
Jaehyun always keeps his promises.
He shows up earlier than you thought, so he’s the one in charge of welcoming the guests as you get ready.
Jaehyun’s at the bottom of the stairs as you go down. He doesn’t notice you at first, looking away and bouncing his leg. When his eyes finally find you, the face he puts is priceless. The dress you’re wearing tonight is pale pink, a gift from Jae. You love how it fits you, but you love how Jaehyun looks at you when you wear it more: as if you were the most precious thing in his life, if not the only; as if he would fight wars for you.
“You look beautiful tonight.” He mutters once you're by his side.
“Just tonight?”
Two guards stand in front of the door that leads to the garden, where everything’s ready for your grand entrance.
Jaehyun offers you his arm, and you don’t hesitate to grab it. You’re so nervous that you think your legs will fail and you’ll fall in front of everyone. As if he read your mind, he whispers so that only you can hear him.
“I’ve got you.”
You know he does.
Jaehyun nods at the guards and they open the doors, the clapping of the guests deafening. Both of you wave your hands at them as you make your way towards the main table, where Jaehyun moves the chair for you to sit, and then occupies the seat beside you.
The dinner goes smoothly. Jaehyun kisses your hand at every opportunity, but you don’t complain. It makes your heart flutter, it makes you forget.
Your father stands up before dessert comes, softly hitting a glass to announce he’s about to talk. He tells a joke that makes everyone laugh before giving a speech that makes your mother cry. You blow him a kiss from your seat, mouthing that you love him. He tells you that he loves you, too. You wonder, would he still love you if you ran away?
Jaehyun rises to his feet with a hand extended in your direction, which you accept. He leads you to the center of the garden, standing in front of you. There's a bow with his hand on his chest that makes you giggle, then you're placing your hand on Jaehyun’s shoulder, looking into his eyes. He grabs your waist, and the orchestra starts to play. The pair of you move around swiftly as if your movements were natural and not the result of months of training with the world's best dancer.
“Tomorrow by this time we'll be married.”
Your jaw clenches, and your heart stops for a second.
“I know.” You manage to answer. “It doesn't feel real.”
“I can’t wait,” Jaehyun whispers. “I can’t wait to make you my wife and form a family. I’ll tell our kids magical stories, stories in which fairies will save princesses and monsters will become good things.”
Only Jaehyun would make you feel like you deserve something as precious as a family with him. Does wanting to run away make you a bad person? Of course, it does. The only thing you love from this life is him, but it’s not like you can choose. It’s all or nothing, it has always been. Tears that you think he mistakes for those of happiness slide down your cheeks, ruining your makeup.
“You’re like the twinkle star I imagined every day since I was five." You press your face against his chest. He allows your tears to wet his shirt. “I love you, Jaehyun. I love you more than I love myself. You believe me, right?”
“Of course I do. And I love you, too. I'll always love you, even when I'm grey and wrinkly.” He kisses the top of your head, then hides his face away to whisper in your ear. “No matter what you decide. I promise.”
Jaehyun always keeps his promises.
Your aunt tries to console your weeping mother only to fail miserably because she can’t stop laughing at her crying face. They start bickering, and you’re grateful for not being the main focus.
You’re standing on top of a big, white stool. Fluttering around you, the maids make sure that everything’s seamless, that nothing’s out of place. The wedding dress is the perfect size, yet you feel trapped in it. You inhale, then exhale. Once, twice, three times, but it doesn’t work. The pressure against your chest doesn’t disappear.
There’s a mirror in front of you, but you can’t bring yourself to look at your reflection. You wouldn’t recognize the person there.
“Princess?” Lami calls. She seems to be the only one in the room who sees you, who really sees you. “Are you okay?”
You nod, forcing a smile. “I’m just nervous.”
Someone comes in to inform that all the guests are in the church and that the prince has arrived, too.
It’s time.
Lami helps you get off the stool. You hold onto her hands as if they were a lifebuoy in the middle of the sea, and you, a shipwreck. Every step you take out of the house and towards the carriage is heavy and hesitant. You get in, glancing at Lami through the window. You press the palm of your hand against the glass, eyes slowly filling up with tears.
This is a goodbye, but not to Lami. Not to any other than yourself.
The young maid presses her hand right where yours is and nods.
“It’ll be okay.”
That’s the last thing you hear before the carriage starts moving.
The way to the church feels endless. The weight in your chest grows and grows, until you think you’ll stop breathing.
You know you shouldn’t feel this way. You’re marrying the love of your life. That should be enough to ease you, shouldn’t it? The woods advance as the carriage moves. You fantasize about the idea of jumping out of the vehicle and diving into the forest, getting lost in its depths, forever.
Your dad, dressed in uniform, helps you get out of the car when you arrive. A red carpet covers the way from the carriage to the church’s entrance. You stand at the beginning of it, holding onto your father’s arm with one hand, your white bouquet on the other.
“You look beautiful.” He says, teary-eyed. “I’m proud of you.”
The doors open all of a sudden. The wedding march starts to play, so you walk. Better said, your father drags you because there’s no way you feel in control of your body anymore.
The pews are full of family, friends, and strangers with their eyes fixed on you. Yours can only focus on Jaehyun. He’s wearing his uniform as well, and that smile you love so much. But there’s something wrong. Something in his face looks off. You reach the aisle, where your father hugs you and kisses your forehead. He’s crying. You rarely see your father cry.
You stand next to Jaehyun. The priest talks but you don’t hear a thing. You can’t do this. You thought you could, but you can’t. Jaehyun holds your hand; the murmurs are instant. What a lovely bride, she’s so nervous. What a lovely groom, look how he’s comforting her.
The memorized vows come out of your mouth easily. You glance at Jaehyun’s shaky hands before looking into his eyes, overflowing with fear. He isn’t scared of forgetting his vows, he’s scared of losing you.
“Do you, Jaehyun, take this woman to be your wedded wife?”
Jaehyun responds right away. “I do.”
“Do you, Y/N, take this man to be your wedded husband?”
The question feels like a death sentence.
You love him, you love him so much that it breaks your heart. You want to beg him to run away with you, but he'd never do that. It would mean leaving his kingdom behind, and he loves his kingdom as much as he loves you. Forcing him to choose would be a selfish move.
But again, condemning yourself to a life that won’t make you happy would also be selfish. Leaving Jaehyun will break your heart, but you're not sure if you can die from a broken heart. Being Queen, however, will certainly kill you.
This isn’t the life you want. You’ve always known. Jaehyun has always known.
Adults want a quick answer, their voices wondering why you’re taking so much time to answer. You try to ignore them, but they’ve already made their way through your brain. You’ve already made up your mind, though, their words can’t change your mind.
“I love you, Jae.” You grab his hands with tears in your eyes and kiss them. “Please, please, forgive me.”
You turn around and run away. People get up, gasps ricocheting against the walls of this sacred place. There’s a scream that comes from your father's throat, and you swear he’s chasing you. Jaehyun begs him to stop.
You look back once you reach the door, hesitating. Is this a good idea? A teary-eyed Jaehyun nods, handing you your confidence back. You open the door and make your way towards the woods.
The dress hooks on the branches that you have to fight against to make your way through the forest, they scratch your skin. Taking off your heels and throwing them aside, you continue your race.
You arrive at a clearing, deciding that it’s time to stop now.
You let your hair loose and check your exposed skin, now red and bloody.
If you are free then why are you crying? Running away is what you wanted, right? But at what price? Losing your family, losing Jaehyun, losing everything you have ever had.
The clearing is covered in soft grass and sunlight. Birds chirp in the distance. There’s calm surrounding you but in the ocean that is your soul, you're fighting turmoil. Maybe you should’ve stayed to know how things would've worked out. Maybe Jaehyun would’ve been your rock through it all like he has been all these years.
You can’t help but wonder.
Now, with a small collection of wounds, is it too late to turn back?

key: ☆ - fluff / 𖦹 - angst / ⚘ - smut
before you fade, 2 - a string of disappearances draws the BAU into a snowbound town, where a chilling case turns personal. 𖦹 ☆
and in the early quiet, i have you - after a long case in a rain-slick town, two BAU agents share one motel room—and in the quiet between storms, something unspoken begins to shift. ☆
something just like this - a bar, golden light, rain on the windows. between laughter and the music, something shifts — and two people fall under the hush of almost. ☆
in my place, all my troubles - in which jealousy hits spencer harder than he realizes. 𖦹 ☆
the door into summer - a slow burning summer night where glances linger, hearts stir, and love finally finds its voice beneath the glow of fireflies and fading light. ☆
listen to the bookman! - one long stakeout, a rain-soaked night, and years of unspoken feelings. ☆
call me on the line - a storm hit logging town, a vanished witness, and a cabin that holds more than silence. 𖦹 ☆
life in technicolor - a quiet chicago case, a borrowed afternoon, and a museum where something unspoken finally began to bloom. ☆
sometime in the mornin’ - one long night, one slow morning — and a closeness neither of them can undo. ☆
band on the run - one long drive, a playlist full of meaning, and a love neither of them can hide anymore. ☆
everglow, a head full of dreams - after years apart, after distance and longing, sometimes it only takes one moment to come undone. ☆
clean cut - one quiet evening, one new haircut, and a thousand unspoken things finally ready to be said. ☆
fifth & mercer - in which spencer meets a detective who walks like she’s always halfway out the door — and hopes she stays. ☆
some kind of heaven - some kinds of heaven are soft enough to hold in your hands. ⚘
let the light have me - in the smoke and silence, she thought he was gone. then the world breathed again. 𖦹 ☆
in the time it takes to breathe - a lifetime of almosts, undone by one night and the fear of being too late. ☆
thank you for visiting, please enjoy! :)

Yes you heard it right folks. Sihyeon of Everglow will no longer be a part of my college smau series. I'm not a big Forever so unfortunately, I have to say goodbye to her. :(
However, that's the only angsty part. Everything else still has crack lol this is based off Jongho's IG story.
