People losing their mind over NaNoWriMo? Now is probably a good time to mention that pretty much every single spell check and grammar check app, program, and function available right now is in some way AI-enabled and functions off machine learning and scraping.

And since we can all agree on the fact that "You can't censor some topics on AO3 because then everything would be censored" I find it hard to understand why an albeit HORRIBLY worded message with deceptive reasons from NaNo isn't having a single person come to the same conclusion of "Shit, if they ban all AI from NaNoWriMo, then that means by definition they have to ban all spell grammar check functions."

And if you are sitting behind your computer ready to tell me stuff like "No Beta We Die Like Men" or "Just let your writing be rough around the edges, it's fine", I'd love to introduce you to my friend who is too anxiety riddled to send so much as a text because his dyslexia means he doesn't know if what he sends people is gonna get him laughed at or not. They neither condemn nor support any specific writing approach That's right in the header. The rest of the message is bullshit but that opening statement is important. That's their official stance. How you choose to write is how you get to write, and trust me, the solution isn't to say stuff like "Well, AI scrapes work so it's all bad". Yeah, we know. But punishing people who use proofreading tools, again, AI-driven tools now, is like saying that "Climate change is awful, we should stop letting people use plastic straws." Well, no, the problem is infinitely bigger than the tools that AI has become attached to, and stopping people from using ones they DO need isn't gonna change squat. Everyone right now could delete their NaNoWriMo account and I PROMISE you it won't stop AI Scraping. I'm not saying don't delete the account because, here's the thing, you do you. You can choose to delete your account just as someone else can choose to use an AI-proofreading app. That's free will baby. And no writing or fiction hosting website has EVER done well with the concept of taking away the creators' or readers' free will. Just a few things to think about tonight when people are grabbing the torches and pitchforks over this one and realize that, if you have sent a text even once in the past year or two that you permitted a word to be autocorrected on, you too have used an AI enabled tool for your writing.

So that time of year is fast approaching, and I think a lot of people I associate with on this platform are going, "But Veilguard's coming out on HALLOWEEN!", which is entirely fine - NaNoWriMo is optional. And honestly, all things considered, I am probably never doing it as an organised situation again.

It took some digging to find the original text, and I'll probably post the screenshot I saw on Bluesky too, but summary: not only is NaNoWriMo pretty much supporting AI (they say "absolutely not condemning", but the rest of the text isn't nearly so mealy-mouthed about it) but also calling people who are against AI "ableist and classist".

No, seriously. I mean, seriously.

Look, how people get their ideas is probably up to them. And stolen valour aside, plugging an idea into ChatGPT and getting some word salad in return is ... I guess someone's prerogative. The same as someone just typing, like, "rutabaga" 50k times technically counts as writing 50k words. But ... first of all, NaNoWriMo was supposed to support people who write. Second of all, the idea that not having someone immediately at your side to serve as beta reader is "classist" is ... no. Like, if you're online enough to understand NaNoWriMo, you can find a damn beta reader. Third, "Some people's brains don't work well enough to see the problems in their writing--" SEE ABOVE RE PROOF-READING, FOR ONE THING, and for another, that's just shit like spelling and grammar check, which has been standard on word processing programmes basically ever since the concept existed! Fourth, I'm not sure how AI assists in shit like "Can't find a publisher because publishers are only really interested in what will sell ALL THE BOOKS", but that's one of their arguments too.

But the last thing - the worst thing - is what that means. NaNoWriMo is not cool with plagiarism as far as I know, but that's what trains AI. More to the point, you have to verify your word count with their website by actually copy-pasting everything you wrote into the site for it to show you as a winner. The fact that they support AI, and that one of their sponsors offers a whole bunch of AI features? I don't trust them not to be selling every single thing people submit for word count total to feed someone else's writer-bot.

I mean, the NaNoWriMo bods have made some spectacularly shitty decisions the last few years. There was that partnership with those scammers at Inkkit, which also revealed the whole thing where one of their moderators - who operated the youth programme, by the way - turned out to be a paedophile and groomer. But this one is just ... disrespectful of the very thing they were supposed to be supporting.

Please don't use the official NaNoWriMo resources. I am concerned for what it will do with not only what you submit for word count, but what you put in their forums too. If you want to do 50k words in 30 days, I am with you all the way, and others will be too. Find a support group that isn't these jackasses and do that.

Plus the "not using AI is ableist" thing is bullshit, by the way. I am not participating this year (I don't think, anyway; not unless I get a great idea) because I'm damn sure I don't have the spoons for that ... because disabled. Because fibromyalgia. The thing is, I don't want to just say "I produced 50k words and won NaNo", I want to write. I want to use my voice, not something cooked up by a machine learning algorithm based on a single sentence. I think way too many people have forgotten what "in your own voice" means to art.

Like, on the r/criticalrole subreddit, we were talking about how Lance Reddick actually did record all his lines as Thordak in TLOVM before he passed, and I mentioned how different that was going to hit, with the example of having heard Robin Sachs as Zaeed in the ME3 Citadel DLC after he passed. And someone went, "Oh, shit, I didn't know he passed! Hey, do you think they'll one day be able to use the voices of dead voice actors so we can keep hearing them? Because I know it's possible because Snoop Doggy Dogg is reading me my homework now and it's awesome!"

I ... may have kind of exploded. I may also have mentioned that some bunch of assholes tried to make a George Carlin special after Carlin's death and his daughter (understandably) hit the roof. It's bad enough to disrespect thousands of people by training an AI to spit out whatever of their works will fit a prompt sentence, but imagine hearing the voice of someone you love, mangled by AI's inability to get real emotional nuance, possibly saying shit they would never say? Using their voices doesn't change that the emotion and power behind those voices is gone forever; it just parades a decaying copy of them around like some vocal equivalent of Weekend at Bernie's.

Anjney Midha is an AI investor and executive (who, entirely by the way, called out the alarmist bullshit guiding the current AI policy making in California), and what he said explains a lot. The fact that AI data models are full of useless shit is one thing. Another thing is, 90% of AI users can't write a coherent prompt for shit. Artificial Intelligence or what the fuckwits from marketing hopped on Horse K are pushing under that label is not going to work for people who lack their own actual one.

I've seen image generator data models with input image descriptions that used imageboard tags instead of natural language, because those lazy fucks compiling them couldn't be arsed to sit down and actually describe every one, instead just ripping the list of tags off the board along with the image itself. Meaning that chuds with all the eloquence of a rotten turnip could use those models efficiently, to generate stuff that is typically posted on imageboards (hint: it's porn.), and at the same time everyone actually able to communicate was being put at a disadvantage.

I wrote a couple of posts about prompts for image generators and how they're not rocket science or anything copyrightable. I also quoted Midjourney lead engineer David Holtz debunking the raindances and prayers bullshit so ingrained into the minds of AI users that some of them still insist it works despite all evidence to the contrary.

And here comes Anjney Midha, saying that not only the overly verbose purple prose I've seen in some prompts is an actual rarity, most of the users just fucking copy whatever they've seen used by other people before, because they can't even fucking formulate one coherent sentence. They aren't just illiterate, they're also unimaginative and actively ignorant, refusing to just sit on their stupid asses and read up on anything. Even if they don't use AI at all, the best they can do is aping trends pitched by about ten different people per language.

Imagine that when I asked some people in AI image generation groups on Facebook whether they mentioned the names of particular artists in their prompts (after I played with the concept myself), they had no idea who I was talking about. As in, they didn't want an early 19th century painting, it just came out like that because of other keywords. But since I've also seen people posting questions that sound like prompts in those very groups instead of running them through an actual generator, it just confirmed my opinion that the majority of AI users has no fucking clue what they're doing, and how.

I'm also noticing that the trend of "AI-generated music" lost its momentum as well. Why? Well, how about requiring even more actual intelligence and skill at using language in certain ways than image generators? AI-generated songs that worked had obviously human-written lyrics. People were making sure that the stuff rhymed and maintained some kind of meter, something that the current Large Language Models can't do. AI-generated instrumentals are even more of a hit-or-miss than songs with synthesized vocals, because at least with the vocals the poetic meter influences the musical meter. Unless the generator shits itself in a spectacularly disastrous way, lyrics with a specific rhythm will result in a viable song - for example, majority of the Tears for Fears parody needed only one run per 30-second fragment, which is quite a feat considering that I started it from the chorus, generating the rest in both directions.

The whole situation is, to be entirely honest, Ray Bradbury's nightmare come to life. Not that Bradbury's take on "people not interested in reading books" wasn't idiotically overengineered to the point of being misunderstood as something completely different and shockingly more obvious going backwards from the description, but we're seeing technology that requires literacy being peddled to a generation that is, by and large, fucking illiterate. No, they're not "visual". They're fucking illiterate and we have the previous generations to thank for that. The literary circle-jerk promotes belligerent imbecilic hacks who can't even use Google properly, required reading curricula for school are being jerked around by out-of-touch groups of book-burners, pearl-clutchers and stodgy antiquarians, genre fiction is still looked down upon despite being the most likely thing young people are going to read, writers gleefully shit all over their legacy in order to regain long-lost relevance, and the publishers push any flashy garbage in hopes that movie studios buy the rights to make an adaptation. How can anyone be motivated to read in this kind of landscape? Much less, how can anyone be motivated to write when PR, marketing and sales of books are more important than actually writing them? We have unscrupulous people stitch together passages generated by LLMs without any proofreading or editing and selling them as e-books or print-on-demand publications for that exact fucking reason. Nobody gives a shit what's inside (not even if it's a guide on mushrooms and wild plants that's supposed to tell you which ones are poisonous), the marketing tactics are more crooked than a New York Republican (or any metropolitan conservative, if you will), and the main goal is to flog it to as many suckers as possible before enough people call bullshit on the whole enterprise.

Honestly you're valid, it's not even your prices that are the problem, without getting to political it's because of how hard inflation is hitting vs. How much people are getting paid ya know? Oh yeah I totally understand that. Inflation is a bitch, hence why I am so desperate for constant commissions to keep me busy and afford my needs, but that just circles around to those who work for that money that they could/should use it for their own needs first.

I started to record the timelapse of every single one of my pieces in case I ever get accused. why the hell am i only given three months to write four different essays tho? Like sure some of the problem is my poor time management because I literally just became an adult.

For my dissertation I had to submit 3000 words (all jam pa ked full of fucking research) I had a couple of months to write this essay so what they did was wait until we had two months to show us how to write the essay, on a retreat which I couldn't go to thanks to getting sick. I asked if i could see the example essays another time and this just never happened due to copyright bullshit.

Now I didn't just get sick. I got really sick. 3 days in A&E just to be kicked out because they didn't find the problem. Literally everyone in my life is worried about me im so brave. The uni assured me this would be taken into consideration as long as I could get a doctors note.

I could not get a doctors note. They wont even pick up the phone it's been a month since I submitted this request.

So I spent ages setting up meetings to discuss with people in the uni my problems so they could write me a note. They didn't.

Now it's too far into the year to defer. I will lose so much fucking money if I give up now so here I go!

I completed the essay in like two weeks and I think i got something wrong on the timescale but ive been sick since november on and off getting better and worse.

I cant even remember writing a single essay for my university im fairly certain I'll never use these skills again because the only people who write academic papers are academics and I don't want to be an academic.

I'm fortunate enough to always get an extension when I ask thanks to my DID diagnosis & I actually considered myself lucky when I caught covid (yeah I also caught fucking covid I was sick for so long I missed so many lectures that I can't catch up on at all) but like seriously?

I haven't even mentioned the poverty, living conditions, the fact most of us have to work through uni, ow the internet changed the way unis talk to students, covid messing students up or international students and how unfair the system is to them.

Ah, yes! I have not read the book you mention, but I've read the original "Save the Cat!", and I agree that it is an excellent resource for understanding story structure.

Although—hoo boy, talk about prescriptive. o__o

For people who aren't familiar with it: the dude (Blake Snyder) lays out a formula, down to the page number, about exactly when each story element should be introduced, how long it should last, where to put your themes and your turning points, where to wrap up them, etc.

And the thing is—he's not wrong. He has identified the narrative structure that we find most engaging, what developments are required to successfully raise the stakes and when it's most effective to deploy them, and how to deliver an ending that is satisfying to the story. He has, like an AI being fed a ton of data, come up with an algorithm that is pretty much guaranteed to produce a commercially-viable script. (The original book was aimed at screenwriters not novelists.)

...Meanwhile, a whole lot of people were horrified by the idea that 'good writing' could be reduced to a paint-by-numbers kit.

And on one hand, you've just seen me get analytical about writing and talk about the importance of understanding the technical aspects of what you're doing—I'm not going to pretend like writing is some woo-woo mystical and unknowable art form that spontaneously emerges from people possessed of unique genius. The technical aspects of it can absolutely be taught. But on the other hand... jesus, does a formula that prescriptive limit the kinds of stories you can tell.

And I won't accuse Snyder of saying that every script out to be written with his formula; he's a movie nerd too, I don't think wants to see that happen either. But the problem is, in this age of media monopolization and corporate storytelling, where cinematic risk-taking is being shunned in favor of 'safe' options, handing Disney a formula that guarantees every story will be 'good enough' means that that is the only story they are ever going to tell again.

People often misuse the word “formulaic” when they mean “boring,” but in this case, it is literally true. Think about the past ten years of Pixar movies—even in the ones where the writing is better on a line level, where the jokes are funnier, the characters more engaging or the themes more meaningful, they are still following the same formula, each story beat coming at the same, increasingly-predictable time. The widespread use of Snyder's formula has resulted in a staggering degree of homogenization in the movies coming out of big studios.

Anyway.

I apologize if it feels like I came down too harshly on your ask, because I do believe that “Save the Cat!” is a book worth reading. It was genuinely eye-opening and taught me a lot about story structure, in a straightforward and no-bullshit way. Snyder's advice is born from observation, from his meticulous analysis of movies that were good, classics that had withstood the test of time, and from trying to puzzle out what made them good.

In the same way that tropes become tropes because there's something about them that is just satisfying to the human brain, all of his advice is solid—he's figured out how to make narrative tick.

It's just... not the only way it can tick.

And “Save the Cat!” is so prescriptive, it offers such a seductively safe way to tell stories, that the temptation for a novice writer to outsource their story planning to someone else—someone who seems to have discovered the holy grail—is going to be all but irresistible.

I'm definitely in agreement with you about the whole "Galra are evil and Alteans are good" bullshit. Because the show has not even pitched that idea at all? I'm so confused by it, because the showrunners have given us a rather large handful of good guys who are Galra and an Altean who is definitely one of the bad guys. Not to mention the fact that it's maybe a little hinted that Alfor did some questionable things that led to Zarkon becoming what he is now.

I mean, that all said, I do hesitate to lump suspicions on Alfor, mostly because almost everything we see of the Paladins of Old suggests that Zarkon and Alfor were incredibly close.

Consider that Alfor was the original architect of the Lions. Now, consider the Black Lion- her terrifying capabilities, her integral position to Voltron. All of the Lions are formidable but the Black Lion- she’s the leader of the pack in every conceivable way.

And Zarkon was who Alfor had in mind as paladin the entire time. This was the Lion he built out of the meteorite that struck Zarkon’s planet, working with the galra.

In comparison, the Yellow Lion does not really stand out from his peers. Like any of the Lions, he’s unique, and has great aptitude, but his role- that of the nurturing pillar of support, the ‘steadying’ leg of Voltron- suggests that even though Voltron was Alfor’s creation, Alfor put himself and his own Lion very firmly subordinate to Zarkon. He chose to be a leg to stand on to support Zarkon, the head.

We don’t know how much of this was specifically Alfor’s choice, and how much of the Lions and how they operate was already hardcoded into the meteor, but, that Alfor was on board with it at all would suggest that Alfor put no small amount of trust in Zarkon.

Let’s consider that Allura, Alfor’s beloved daughter, was very familiar with Zarkon and took his betrayal intensely personally.

Consider it was very likely Allura knew Zarkon as practically a surrogate uncle her entire life. The royal lines of Altea and the Galra were very close. 

That hardly tells me Alfor turned on Zarkon just for the hell of it or vice versa.

We know that Zarkon seems to hold Alfor uniquely responsible for what happened. After all, Zarkon leveled Altea, wiped out its people, and then went on to annihilate every planet in Altea’s solar system, and we don’t know if those planets were occupied or if Zarkon’s rage was just that bad. Conversely, it’s very likely Pidge’s predecessor as Green Paladin was an Olkari- but Olkarion and its people still exist, and had only relatively recently come under the attention of the empire.

We know, however, that the other paladins of old stood with Alfor, against Zarkon, their leader. That the Red, Green, and Blue paladins abandoned their armor and weapons and sent the Lions away, seemingly to die far from their homes.

We know that Alfor didn’t seek shelter with his daughter or Coran but went out to face Zarkon, without his paladin armor or bayard, and the presence of his AI and Coran’s comments on it tell us that Alfor basically went knowingly to his death.

We know that Zarkon didn’t have a scar on his face in the past, with the paladins together, and he didn’t have those glowing eyes that showed he was prolonging his life with quintessence, either.

But he had both during the fall of Altea. And Zarkon happens to be the obvious narrative parallel of Shiro, who, in Shiro’s arc, the appearance of his facial scar correlated with an intense and lengthy traumatic experience that’s still messing him up rather substantially- when much of Zarkon’s behavior heavily suggests old, unmanaged trauma.

And we know that something is out there causing an “unnatural death” of entire planets, and that this:

was not a physical location they visited, so Black was showing Shiro that devastation from her memory- possibly, from Zarkon’s memory.

There’s a lot of pieces we don’t have yet. We don’t know what happened to Zarkon. We don’t know what role the other paladins played. We don’t know what Allura refers to as the “Dark history of the paladins” and it’s likely Allura herself doesn’t know all of it given she was utterly blindsided by Haggar. We don’t know what enemies the paladins of old were fighting, and we don’t know where the meteorites the Lions were created out of came from.

But the implications appear that this is partially a love story:

and partially, a story of some kind of betrayal, real or perceived.

That Alfor’s Lion is the archetypal protector and supporter of Voltron, that both Zarkon and his home planet appear to have been so decimated, and that Zarkon held Alfor uniquely responsible for whatever perceived transgression occurred, is suspicious to me. That Alfor, a cautious person, would go under-armed into a fight with someone he knows the capabilities of, not expecting to survive, and passing up a perfectly good opportunity to flee onboard either Yellow or his own castle, is suspicious to me. 

That Haggar would hold her own kind in such contempt, and attempt to kill Allura to the point that she will completely ignore Voltron to do so, and yet, for all her callousness and cruelty, is genuinely loyal to Zarkon and unafraid to endanger her own life in his service, and deeply troubled by his injuries, is suspicious.

These things seem related.

To me, I think the implication is that Alfor didn’t hurt Zarkon- as much as something may have happened to force Alfor, the protector of the team, to pick who to save- and may have turned his back on Zarkon and his planet without fully realizing what would happen if he did. That he was so willing to face Zarkon not expecting to survive hardly suggests, to me, he had a clean conscience or didn’t care about the fate of one of his longstanding allies, especially one he clearly thought so highly of.

Something, something went horribly wrong with these people and none of them walked away all right.
