You might think that I'm joking when I say that we need cyborg rights to be codified into law, but I honestly think that, given the pace of development of medical implants and the rights issues raised by having proprietary technologies becoming part of a human body, I think that this is absolutely essential for bodily autonomy, disability rights, and human rights more generally. This has already become an issue, and it will only become a larger issue moving forwards.

the mind of moriarty 👑🧑🏻‍💻♟️
I had the absolute pleasure of doing the original "the game is now" escape room experience immediately followed by the new moriarty-centric escape room (as though the first one wasn't moriarty-centric enough?) with @victorianpining and @647763 back at the end of July, and I did promise a full write-up when I came back to my senses at the end of it!
First off, I could not have been more pleased with the experience; I do absolutely recommend giving it a go yourself if you have the chance. Now, if you're in the mood for spoilers, I'll be detailing some thoughts and recollections below the cut. 💙
Tumblr media
Just in case the first escape room experience didn't quite convince you, Moriarty is dead. It's very important that you know that going into this. He's the most dead anyone has ever been. He's so dead he "wishes he could die twice!", after all! They have to keep saying it because otherwise you might forget it, you see. Especially after Sherlock had a whole drug trip on a plane to prove how someone might have faked their death in such a manner only to conclusively decide that dear old Jimmy boy is in fact dead.
I'm assuming everyone reading this is already relatively familiar with the first escape room, and the whole bit where the Network is operating under the guise of "Doyle's Opticians," so I won't spend any time discussing that, except to say that we did get a few confused looks from the various Stamfords when we reappeared (after finishing the first escape room and making the choice to stick to non-alcoholic beverages at the Mind Palace prior to the second) to say, "Oh, no, we didn't get turned around or anything. We've just got a second appointment." (You mean to tell me that most people who go do one experience and then just... leave? Without doing the second one the very same day? What an absolutely unfathomable concept.)
The opening puzzles before the "John Watson held at gunpoint" briefing video (which was the same as that used for the first escape room) were particularly fun: you're shown a series of four images, and you have to figure out the pattern of what's changing (being mirrored, one might say?) between each one to choose the fifth of the sequence from a selection. (Ref. 1: Into the Woods: How Stories Work and Why We Tell Them, John Yorke.)
And then you go on to 221B Baker Street for photos and a brief moment of shenanigans, and I must add a note here that the Stamford who was working with us on this round was brilliant, you could tell she was absolutely loving her job, and there was a bit of a spiel about observation and logic and deduction that turned out to actually be helpful in solving the puzzles in the first room. (Shocking, that she wasn't just harping on about those concepts for fun!)
Anyway, Mycroft shows up via video feed, per usual, and introduces the premise of this game: James Moriarty (who is most assuredly dead, by the way, it's very important that you remember that) programmed an AI before he died—"an archive of maniacal data"—and your job, as new (read: expendable) recruits in the Network, is to go into a virtual-reality space called the Nexus, where you need to hack into the AI and replace Moriarty's mind with—well, not yours, obviously, you're "far too, as they say, basic"—but with Sherlock's. But why not use Mycroft's mind? you may be asking. Especially if he's the smart one.—because, dear reader, "One Mycroft Holmes is already too great a gift for this world. Two would be an indulgence." And that's verbatim from Mycroft Holmes as protrayed by Mark Gatiss himself. I am going to haunt him in whatever comes after this life. Still can't believe that you give them money and in exchange they insult you for approximately ninety minutes and at the end you say 'thanks, this was so much fun, I will definitely be doing this again!'
Right before you go into the first room, you are helpfully reminded by Mycroft one last time that "despite what video games suggest, you absolutely can die in the virtual world." Bit of a theme they seem to be harping on! It's almost like they're trying to get you to really believe that Jim is actually dead or something!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Photos are all from the official 221b social media accounts.)
The first room is a sort of fusion of the pool from TGG with a chemistry lab and a hospital corridor, and also a miniature version of Jim's prison cell from THOB is there. There's a mannequin of John Watson decked out in a Semtex vest in the corner, and you get the usual experience of solving lots of intellectually- and tactilely-satisfying puzzles, which included opening a bordering-on-comical number of lockers. The John mannequin has a key in his hand labelled "007" (classic!) and a phone in his pocket so you can text Mycroft. Moriarty reminds you that he's the good old-fashioned villain in this fairy tale, and that Sherlock needs him or he's nothing, and that John is Sherlock's "live-in ordinary person."
I also particularly enjoyed the little chemistry puzzle in this room—they do give you a periodic table on the wall, so you have all you need to solve it without any prior knowledge, but who goes to a Sherlock escape room without a graduate chemist in hand?
(We also decided after the fact that the gift shop definitely should have been selling packs of the stickers seen on the lockers in this room, one of which was notably a pixel-art TV with a rainbow screen and the phrase "brainwashed".)
The highlight here, however, was definitely the prison cell. There's a letter on the chair that's on Pentonville Prison letterhead and signed by Mycroft and otherwise consists of a paragraph or two of fully redacted text. The walls have a number of fun phrases scratched into them, like "THREE SIGNS IS NOT ENOUGH" and "TOO MANY THATCHERS", which continue to live in my mind rent-free. (Some of the other phrases were helpful hints for the puzzles you had to solve, but those two weren't even relevant for the puzzles, as I recall. They were just bonuses. Specifically designed to haunt me, personally.)
At some point in here, Moriarty—no, sorry; his recorded voice, because he's dead, remember! We're just poking around in his virtual mind! ("Jim recorded lots of little messages for me before he died," anyone?)—insults you over the speakers, saying, "Goldfish, goldfish, goldfish have better recall than you!" (Mycroft Holmes in TEH, "I'm living in a world of goldfish," anyone?)
Anyway, you solve all the puzzles and put the phone you were using to text Mycroft in Jim's prison cell and continue on your way, going further into the mind of Moriarty, in the direction of the "Watson Ward" and "No Sherlock beyond this point" arrows. (Big moment for "there's definitely a reason that every other character in the canon has the initials J(H)W or its respectable inversion JM" girlies!)
Also there's an audio clip of Jim saying "choo choo!" as you leave the room. (Big moment for TFP girlies! I think my exact words were "I am going to kill myself.")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Onto room two! Green lasers everywhere! (They definitely intended you to do a fun little acrobatics situation here but we were content to hit the floor and crawl to find the buttons to disable them.)
After you disable the lasers, you get to focus on the primary puzzle of the room: a wall covered with sketches of people and copies of incriminating evidence, and you have to connect the scarlet thread red strings between each member of the jury and the evidence that Jim was blackmailing them with—you know, from way back in TRF? When the key code wasn't important at all, it was just about knowing someone's pressure points? (There's a Mary who's having an affair and is a lesbian, btw. Just like our mystery corpse in the original escape room, we should never assume someone is straight when there's room for them to be gay.) This puzzle as a whole was really satisfying, I will say, though it did make us wish for either a notepad or a massive whiteboard to make notes on while we solved the little logic puzzles to match the people to their blackmail material. (They could give you little branded notepads and pens to take with you through the rooms, and to keep as a souvenir, like the ones hotels give you! It would be so fun!) This was definitely the puzzle we spent the majority of our time on.
And then you get to the highlight of this room: opening the safe to reveal Jim Moriarty himself—well, a mannequin version—decked out in the Crown Jewels, happy as could be. There's a reminder that nothing in the Tower of London is as valuable as a few tiny lines of computer code that can open any door. And Jim's written a silly little poem of sorts and draws far too much attention to both "the rod of power in his right hand's grasp" and "the Orb" between his legs (and then we were at the Tower of London two days later and found out that that's not just a euphemism, it's literally called the Orb? Unhinged behaviour. And I don't even know who to blame for it now. The "rod of power" bit was all him, though. Could have been normal and called it a scepter!) and you have to figure out a code and (spoilers!) the code is 7437. Which is fine and perfectly normal and I'm sure the vast majority of people who complete that room think nothing of it, but unfortunately, we were not a group of "the vast majority" and so our experience was not what you might call "fine and normal", because Mia input the code and there was a little beep of success of and then she, without missing a beat, went on to say, "Oh, that's so funny! That's the numbers for S-H-E-R," at which point Rebs and I immediately sank to the floor to stare into the abyss while waiting for the next door to open.
So, just to recap: the point of TRF was definitely that there was no code, there was never any code, it was just about knowing people's pressure points and getting them to do what you wanted, but now that we're inside Moriarty's mind it's definitely all about codes and there's a silly poem to draw attention to various things including, but not limited to, the Orb between his legs, and the code that you need from him so that you can go deeper into his mind is S-H-E-R. Yeah. Sure. Why not. This is Fine! What really haunts me is knowing how many people will do that escape room and will never know that that's what those numbers mean. Because why on earth would you?
(Just to prove how normal I am about this, I won't even say anything about a potential parallel between Moriarty's "Orb" situation and the globe on Mycroft's desk under Whitehall. See? I'm not even mentioning it, why would you bring up something like that? No M-theory here, no sir! Not a single trace of it!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Congratulations, you've made it to the rooftop, where Sherlock jumped off a roof and James Moriarty met his end, and I swear Jim has a line somewhere in there complaining about how hard it is to plan this sort of thing. (Whatever that means!)
We've got screens playing clips from all thirteen episodes of the show—okay, that might be an exaggeration; I didn't actually check to see if there were clips from every single episode. But there were definitely clips from series four, which is very funny considering how the universe that these rooms seem to be set makes exactly zero mention of John's wife at any point in time. (Hey, hello, hi, it's me who's writing this. Obviously I noticed when there were shots from TFP on those screens.)—and there are computer-code-esque symbols on the walls and Jim is lying dead on the floor and Sherlock is standing on the edge of the rooftop.
Here are some fun facts for you: the gun is still in Jim's pocket. (He's definitely dead, though! You know how you shoot yourself in the head and then return your gun to its rightful place before you politely lay down and die?) And Sherlock's mannequin is wearing the purple shirt of sex a purple shirt, which is a detail that might not be noticed unless you're thoroughly ransacking his every pocket (twice) to check for a missing key, and I was going to say something about how of course he is, because what else would you expect him to be wearing when we're three levels deep in Moriarty's mind and the code to get this far was S-H-E-R, but then I went back and checked and Sherlock is, in fact, wearing a purple shirt at the end of TRF. (Which somehow still doesn't actually negate any of the above, imo.)
Anyway, the first puzzle in this room involves finding a bunch of physical puzzle pieces to solve a puzzle, and figuring out how to unlock doors to obtain all of the pieces, and some of the padlocks use code words that they give you by putting phrases from their "sophisticated and cerebral" merch on the screen and highlighting letters, and some use numbers that you get by solving other riddles, but one of them is a padlock with a physical key and (spoiler!) it turns out that you don't even need to get the key for that one, because there's another way to get the puzzle piece out without unlocking the door at all! (Was his grand daylight robbery scheme a matter of keys and codes, or was it just about knowing people's pressure points and blackmailing them? You decide!)
And then it's time to manage the final task of uploading Sherlock's brain to the AI, which is accomplished by running around hitting buttons while music plays over the speakers to instil a sense of great urgency. You definitely would not want to do this with fewer than three members in your party. This is where they use Jim's line of "Surprise! You didn't think I'd just disappear, did you?" as seen in one of the teaser trailers, and they also plaster every screen with the classic "Did you miss me?" footage that mysteriously appeared on every screen in the country at the end of HLV.
But when you do manage to complete the task, Mycroft's voice comes back to congratulate you, and to sort of threaten you (though that's par for the course when it's Mycroft Holmes we're talking about, I'll admit), and to leave open the possibility of your returning for another job someday. I, for one, cannot wait to see what they're going to do for round three. (Personally, I think it would be very funny if they put one of the rooms on the Demeter for the next one. No rebranding necessary, no discussion of Dracula at any point whatsoever, but for some reason you find yourself on a boat, in cabin number 9, playing chess with the Devil himself Moriarty! What a shocking and unforeseen turn of events that would be!)
(The only real downside of them doing a third room would be that I would then have to make time to do three of these in one day. And that might be a bit excessive. I mean, three eye exams in one day? Someone's definitely going to say something.)
We had a very lovely time at the Mind Palace bar after that, to debrief a bit, and there was a logic puzzle that I still need to sit down and crack at some point when I have a moment. I was personally very pleased to find drinks called "The Diogenes Club" and "The Lying Detective" (both of which I was contractually obligated to order, naturally), and did you know you can rent out the bar for private events? I'm sure I would be very normal about such a situation. (Good job I'm not local to the area, truly!)
This has already gone longer than I think I intended, and I'm sure I could keep going, given the opportunity, but I'll close things out here, and say again that I do absolutely recommend doing the escape room(s) if you have the opportunity; I could not have been more pleased with the experience. My sole complaint is that they don't let you wander back through the rooms after solving the puzzles to have a moment to appreciate all the small details when you're not working against the clock. And also they should send me the scripts, as a treat. Along with any remaining unused video or audio footage. (Moftiss, my DMs are open, feel free to drop the links at your earliest convenience!)

So I went on holiday last week! Free camping at the family trailer! (Free as in we didn’t have to pay for the site, we did do some restocking for the trailer itself and all other expenses)
So lemme tell you how that went :)
Day 1: drove up, which took an hour longer than usual cuz half the roads were torn up (ah the Canadian seasons… winter and construction). Made it there, met parents for dinner, found out heating and AC were still down so it was gonna get pretty cold.
Parents were fine because they have body heat, but it hit something like freaking 5 degrees so we broke out the winter sleeping bags about it.
Oh and got a second degree burn on my arm wrassling with the kettle trying to work out how/why it wasn’t whistling properly when it boiled (this remained unresolved and it just kinda did or didn’t at random). The trailer had sterile pads but no tape to apply them with, but I carry that in my car so it was fine.
And around 3am, a fuse blew so the lights wouldn’t turn on. Fridge and microwave still fine.
Day 2: woke up to discover the fridge, which contained my $$$$$$$$$ shots for at least 3 autoimmune conditions which can’t warm up for 15 minutes or they’re worthless, was no longer working. Microwave was.
I checked almost everything, asked my Dad if I had to turn anything off before playing with the actual fuse panel (unscrewed by knife because no screwdriver in the trailer anymore?? For some reason??). He insisted on calling and telling me to retry every single thing I already tried, then told me “no you can just play with the fuses see which has blown”.
The lights indicating blown fuses are on the list of things currently not working. :)
Luckily, I did manage to find and replace 2 blown fuses and got everything except the heater and AC working again before the fridge got warm. We went and checked out some spots to maybe do cosplay shoots!
Day 3: got most of the way to a cosplay shoot but my dumb ass decided to switch contacts at the site rather than scare the piss outta the cashiers at the 2 quick stops we made on the way, and something kept getting into my dang eyes.
I flushed it 3 times, taught my partner to flush it, and then had to bap a disposable lens back in anyway to drive down the street to the hospital, because every single optician who could do the 2 second check I needed to tell me if there was still something in my eye or I actually scratched the cornea (again) closed 10 minutes before this began.
So we hung out at the hospital for 3.5 hours, me with my eyes shut for about half of it because OW, in full view of the one single little scope I needed to borrow to determine if I could safely put contacts back in and drive to the trailer an hour away (very bad idea if there’s an actual cut or scratch on the cornea).
Flushed my eyes 3 more times in their bathroom and the red went down enough and the right eye started focusing so I figured if it’s a scratch it’s a small one and can wait til the opticians open tomorrow so we went home anyway. Both eyes fine, but there was Definitely still something in them until the last flush because it kept stabbing me.
Day 4: picked up a buddy from the bus station to join us for the rest of the trip, went about some of our favourite local spots to see wild gardens and waterfalls and shit.
Apparently the bus lost someone half way up who was supposed to get off at a specific stop but didn’t but that wasn’t our problem so it was fine. Only a 45 minute delay.
Stole some sticks from the arboretum :) and got back in time to light an early fire and toast smores!
Day 5: buggered off almost all the way back to the hospital we’d been to before, this time to go see a fen full of carnivorous plants. The other two kept leaving me behind by accident but I had the car keys so it’s not my problem.
We somehow lost a second little nature reserve on the way back but it’s fine. We made it to a second waterfall before partner started getting some serious pains (possibly smores related) and joked about going back to the same hospital, but it was one of their usual ones so we knew how to deal with it. No more smores for him though.
Day 6: big cosplay shoot that actually worked, I have shared pictures! Partner was pretty much stress dissociating all the way down aaaaand we may have nearly killed our buddy cuz one of the times we went off-roading and climbed under a ledge they got so dizzy they nearly fell and we had to stop to rest… fortunately at the shoot site around the next corner, so we got them fed and hydrated and had a break ourselves, then got to setting up light and such while they rested.
I climbed all the way down to the waterfront :) and! Someone recognized Delicious In Dungeon on our way back, but not Mithrun because anime-onlies. I still win though, cuz our other two were doing Name of the Wind and I think a really specific stage production of Peter Pan (it’s a cool costume) and they didn’t recognize that.
On our way home the GPS did decide to bring us down a spooky backroads we’d never taken before, despite driving this exact route 3 times previously on this very vacation and many times over several years before that. So obviously we said “fuck it” and went to check it out, which was good fun.
Then we got home and set up for our last fire, tried out our new smores grilling contraption to make bacon grilled cheese (it was goooooood), and me or buddy must have knocked the stove at some point, because around midnight the gas alarm started going off.
While partner, the smallest and shortest and worst-lunged of the group, had been inside on a bug murdering spree with the electric flyswatter.
We kicked his ass out, I checked the stove and determined it was not a more mysterious leak we’d have had to disconnect the propane for and lose the water heater, and opened all the windows and the door to let the propane clear out while we looked up what to do with a propane leak.
Buddy got in touch with their mom the former nurse to check when we should go to hospital about the propane poisoning (again we joked about going to the same one but for him) and determined that yeah, he was definitely poisoned and felt real sick, but so long as he stayed outside and did not get worse, puke, or pass out, he should be fine.
So, it getting cold again, I retrieved the cold weather sleeping bag and we put him in front of the fire, debating whether or not the smoke would make it worse. (He’s fine, the smoke probably didn’t help but again, it got Fucking Cold).
And then we waited about an hour 45 for the propane to clear, as determined by me sticking my head in and sniffing to see if I could smell gas every 15 minutes. We did not inform the nurse-mom of this method because we didn’t have a better one (the alarm stopped going off 5 minutes in and showed a green light but it still smelled REAL strongly of gas and I got a headache around the hour mark and got buddy to second guess the last few).
Nothing exploded and we didn’t get in shit for the alarm going off real loud at midnight, so all in all a success!
Day 7: we packed up our stuff, tidied the trailer, and met up with my parents again to turn the keys back over and headed home the long way, via another waterfall.
This time they’d opened the end that was shut last year (and sealed off the end that was open last year) so we got to hike upstream for a bit! And found some nice ruins and trees and all sorts of fun things.
A long drive, but not a bad one, and we got home and got everything sorted out to take buddy all the way back to their home the next day and the camping was officially over.
Oh and also we almost missed a turn on the way home, and when I turned us around to go get it partner was Brutally Attacked by all of the luggage piled next to them and we had to pull over to dig him out and check he was okay
And two very nice separate old farm gents stopped beside us to ask if we were okay (two of the only three cars we saw on they road, not bad)
Overall: BIG Everything That Can Go Wrong Will Go Wrong energy, but all things that we were able to fix by ourselves, which was a blessing. Buddy may be once again regretting coming hiking with us, because I don’t think it’s hiking if you don’t have to use your hands at least once and they don’t exactly climb hills on the day to day
(But we were SO nice to them and stuck to the proper trails almost all of the time and didn’t go do my favourite detour off the big rocky beach and climbing the cliffside or nothin!)
And my back only gave out a little bit yesterday after we got everything put away, and it’s fine now so overall? It coulda been worse.
But now I need a vacation to relax and recover from our vacation.

Everything I learn about American healthcare makes it worse lmao - insurance only covers the lenses? You're meant to what, hold them up to your eyes in your fuckin hands?
(Here, at least at the big chain opticians, we have to pay for our frames (though there may be exceptions if you're on certain benefits, can't remember); the lens is packaged in with that unless you want special treatment for them that makes them clearer/less flare-prone etc, or you have varifocals. There are usually like two frame options that are very cheap, £15 or so, and a couple more under £50, but if you're up for spending £70 you get 2 for 1. So I do that. Because I have a delicate baby head that can't deal with wearing the same pair of glasses for more than four hours or so. Also my mum always gets two and I've seen her be glad of it often enough to want to follow suit.)
this is about the glasses poll? I have really bad glasses insurance and my whole family has terrible eyes (I’m at -8 diopters, mom’s -4 and has the best eyes, dad’s at -10 or more, 2’s at -8 also, 3’s only ten and is at -4.5 or something), I know some people have better options because we’re on the absolute cheapest eye insurance from dad’s work. We get a $200 frame allowance or something every two years and a new pair of lenses every year, but have to pay for antiglare or blue screen light stuff or transition sunglasses lenses or whatever
it would be cheaper and more possible to get frames from Costco or something, but we all just have terrible eyes that nobody will make our lenses except the optometrist office so we need to get stuff through there.

When you say that the supermarkets in the us are huge, how huge are we talking? Like bigger than a big Tesco?
oh yes. bigger than big tesco. bigger than even the biggest tesco.
i think bcos in the usa, especially rural areas, ppl drive a long way to a store, so it needs to literally contain everything you could need. like i've been in targets with camping sections, fishing sections, opticians, full pharmacies, starbucks, as well as much larger clothes / home goods sections than UK supermarkets, whereas in the uk we don't have areas that can be as rural (except maybe in scotland) so we don't really need this
i also wonder a bit about the difference between driving vs walking culture, like the uk has a lot more corner shops, which are in walking distance, so theyre small bcos ur only picking up things u can carry back, whereas outside us cities in the usa, ur gonna have to drive to the store anyway, so u might as well make the store massive
then also theres just a lot more empty space in the usa, way more than in the uk, so they can fit these giant stores in much easier than we can.

to clean my glasses i used to always just use the cloth from the opticians or whatever suitable item of clothing i have on me but lately ive found that literally nothing will suffice except those little wet glasses wipes that come in sealed packets. why is this. are Big Spectacles manufacturing glasses that are more susceptible to smudging and smearing these days or is my eyesight or sensitivity to my eyesight getting worse and therefore im just more conscious of the smudges and smears. i don't know. this post falls very much into the category of Boring Post i know but it's a problem which has been frustrating and irritating me. especially like now when i run out of my stupid little glasses wipes. #SMUDGELIFE

Journal Entry #56 (part three)
Tumblr media
Journal Entry #56 (part two) // STORY INDEX
Yuri
Victor and I were just getting out of the bath, where we’d been relaxing after playtime more than we’d actually been bathing, when his phone rang. For some reason, he’d brought It into the bathroom with us. I frowned at the intrusion, but Victor reacted like he was anticipating it. He bounded forward and scooped his phone off the counter by the sink.
“It’s probably the optician,” he said excitedly, and then answered the call with a cheerful, “Hello? Victor Okamoto-Nelson speaking.”
It did turn out to be the optician, phoning to say Victor’s new glasses were ready.
"That was quick," I observed, as soon as he'd hung up and told me what it was about.
"Yeah," he said. "I thought I'd be waiting until tomorrow. But, you got your last pair in less than twenty-four hours, didn't you? Maybe they like to under-promise and over-deliver."
"Always a good customer service policy," I said.
"Do you want to come with me to get them?"
I shook my head. "I'd like to, but I'm running low on energy. Still recovering from yesterday." I offered him a smile. "And this morning."
He looked me up and down. "I guess we did get a little more energetic than we intended."
"You're worth it," I said.
"So are you."
He gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and then ran off to his room to get ready to go out.
As for me, I took my time getting ready for the day. There was no need to rush, and it felt good to pay attention to each little aspect of my personal care routine and to appreciate being able to do all of it for myself.
Joy and pleasure can be found in the smallest or simplest things, if only we slow down and pay attention. And those same small things are reasons to be grateful too. Brushing my teeth, moisturizing my face, combing my hair… each task felt wonderful, not just from a physical perspective, but also because I was happy and thankful to finally be well enough to do them on my own.
Please let this last, I thought.
I’m not generally a praying person, but I hoped that if there was some almighty force controlling all our destinies, it would hear what I was thinking and grant me a reprieve from the stress and suffering I’d had to endure recently.
I glanced at myself in the mirror one more time. Satisfied with what I saw, I finally made my way downstairs to wait for Victor to get back. He’d left while I was still in the midst of putting myself together, which was fine with me. I was sure he wouldn't be long, in any case.
I got comfortable on the sofa with the dogs, turned on the TV and settled down to watch anime while I waited.
I thought Victor would only be gone for an hour or so, but when I realized over two hours had passed and he still hadn't returned, I started to worry. He was only going to pick up his glasses. He should've been home, unless...
Don't panic, I told myself. Just text him.
A few deep breaths helped to slow my racing heartbeat. I wiggled my phone out of my back pocket and was about to send Victor a message when I heard the faint sound of keys in the lock of the front door.
The dogs hopped off the sofa, but neither of them barked. They bark at everyone except me, Victor and Yuki. I let out my breath in a huge exhalation.
A few seconds later, Victor came around the corner with his new glasses perched on his nose, a large cloth shopping bag in his hand and a million watt smile on his face.
“Yuri, look!" he exclaimed, holding up the red and grey striped bag. "I bought books!”
I laughed out loud. I couldn't help it. He may be a grown man, but in that moment he resembled nothing so much as a little boy proudly showing off his prized possession to his favourite grownup.
When I finally caught my breath, I held my arms out to him and said, “Come here.” Then, I quickly had to add, “No, Victor. Put your books down first.”
He set his shopping bag on the table as if it contained the most precious objects in the universe, and then caught me in a jubilant hug. “Are you proud of me?”
“I’m very proud of you,” I said. “I wish you'd told me you were making a detour, though."
"I didn't mean to not tell you," he said. "But, I got distracted.”
“Oh? Distracted by books?”
“Exactly. I noticed there's an international bookshop across the street from the optician's office, and I was kind of curious about what they had in English, so I went in. I started looking at the books, and then I started reading and lost track of time."
"You were reading in the bookshop?"
"Yeah!" he said. "For more than five minutes, and I didn't even get a headache, and nothing looked weird or distorted at all."
"That's wonderful," I said. "Which books did you get?"
"I got one about the history of the Olympics, and one about samurai, and two action novels. Did you know they made those? Like action movies, but books.
"I had some idea, yes."
"I already read almost two chapters of one of them while I was hanging out in the bookshop. Now, I have to know what happens."
I smiled. "Welcome to the world of reading."
"Thanks," he said.
"Why don't you show me all your books?” I suggested. “Maybe you can read to me and show me how well you can do now that you've got your glasses."
He nodded, and happily agreed. We curled up together with his bag of books, and for the next hour I was content to snuggle with him and listen to the surprisingly interesting history of the Olympic Games.
Remember what I said before about being a little more hopeful with each passing day? That's been more true over the past two days than all the days that came before. This morning, for the first time in a very long time, I dared to let myself believe that the future was something to look forward to instead of something to dread.

How to Choose the Best Eye Doctor: A Comprehensive Guide
Choosing the right eye doctor is crucial for maintaining good eye health and ensuring that any vision problems are diagnosed and treated promptly. Whether you need a routine eye check-up, treatment for an existing condition, or specialized care, finding the best eye doctor for your needs can be overwhelming. This blog will guide you through the essential factors to consider when choosing the right eye doctor.
Tumblr media
1. Understand the Types of Eye Specialists
Before you start your search, it’s important to know the difference between the types of eye specialists:
Optometrists (OD): These doctors provide primary vision care, including eye exams, prescribing corrective lenses, and detecting certain eye conditions. They can treat some eye diseases and prescribe medications but do not perform surgery.
Ophthalmologists (MD/DO): Medical doctors who can perform eye exams, diagnose and treat all eye diseases, and perform eye surgery. They often specialize in specific areas such as retina, cornea, or glaucoma.
Opticians: They are not eye doctors but are trained to fit and dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions from optometrists or ophthalmologists.
Understanding which type of specialist you need will help narrow down your options.
2. Check Credentials and Experience
When searching for an eye doctor, reviewing their credentials is essential:
Board Certification: Ensure the doctor is board-certified, indicating they have completed the necessary training and passed rigorous exams.
Specialized Training: If you need specialized care (e.g., retina surgery or cataract treatment), look for an ophthalmologist with fellowship training in that particular field.
Experience: An experienced doctor is more likely to have successfully treated patients with your specific condition. Ask how many procedures like yours the doctor has performed.
3. Read Reviews and Testimonials
Patient reviews and testimonials can provide valuable insights into the quality of care an eye doctor offers. Look for reviews on trusted healthcare platforms and consider both positive and negative feedback. Reviews can highlight aspects such as the doctor's attentiveness, communication style, and the clinic’s environment.
4. Evaluate Technology and Equipment
The medical field is continuously advancing, and eye care is no exception. The best eye clinics are equipped with state-of-the-art technology that ensures accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans. Check if the eye doctor you’re considering uses advanced diagnostic tools and equipment for treatments like LASIK, cataract surgery, or diabetic retinopathy management.
5. Consider Convenience and Accessibility
Your eye doctor should be easily accessible in terms of location and appointment scheduling. Ensure the clinic is in a convenient location, has reasonable office hours, and provides emergency care if needed. Clinics that offer online appointment scheduling and telehealth services for follow-ups can add to your convenience.
6. Assess Communication Style
A good doctor-patient relationship is essential for effective treatment. During your first visit, assess the doctor’s communication style. Do they take the time to answer your questions? Are they patient and thorough in their explanations? Your doctor should make you feel comfortable and confident in their expertise.
7. Verify Insurance Coverage
Eye care can be costly, especially if you need specialized treatments or surgeries. Before scheduling your appointment, confirm that the doctor or clinic accepts your insurance. If you don’t have vision insurance, inquire about the clinic’s payment plans or options for financing.
8. Look for Comprehensive Services
The best eye clinics provide comprehensive care, from routine eye exams to treatment for complex conditions. Look for clinics that have specialists in different areas of eye care, so you don’t have to switch doctors if your condition requires more specialized attention.
9. Seek Recommendations
Ask friends, family, or your primary care doctor for recommendations. Personal referrals can give you firsthand accounts of a doctor’s expertise, demeanor, and the overall patient experience at the clinic.

The Beauty of Tortoiseshell Frames: A Classic Look for Every Face
Tortoiseshell frames have long been revered as a fashion accessory staple, admired for their rich colour palette and organic patterns. Whether you’re drawn to tortoiseshell sunglasses for sun-soaked days or tortoiseshell glasses for everyday elegance, these frames offer a versatile look that transcends trends. In this guide, we’ll explore why tortoiseshell eyewear remains a classic choice and how it complements every face shape and personal style.
From the luxurious mottled browns and ambers of traditional designs to contemporary variations like tortoiseshell grey, these frames blend warmth and sophistication. You’ll learn about the history, materials, styling tips, and care techniques that make tortoiseshell a must-have in every wardrobe. Let’s dive into the enduring beauty of tortoiseshell frames and discover how you can make them your own.
Tumblr media
A Brief History of Tortoiseshell Eyewear
The origin of tortoiseshell patterning dates back to the 17th century, when craftsmen in Europe valued real tortoise shells for their durability and lustrous finish. Early eyewear trends saw these shells carved into decorative items before evolving into spectacles frames in the 1800s. Vintage tortoiseshell frames quickly became a symbol of sophistication, worn by intellectuals and style icons alike.
By the mid-20th century, concerns over conservation led to a shift toward synthetic alternatives, primarily cellulose acetate. Today’s acetate frames replicate the depth and variation of natural tortoiseshell without harming endangered species. This evolution has made tortoiseshell glasses both ethically responsible and widely accessible, preserving the pattern’s storied elegance.
Anatomy of the Tortoiseshell Pattern
True tortoiseshell patterns are characterized by a marbled interplay of dark and light tones—typically rich browns, honey ambers, and black flecks. tortoiseshell sunglasses showcase this contrast with glossy finishes that catch the light and accentuate facial features. Each frame’s pattern is unique, lending an artisanal touch to mass-produced eyewear.
Modern manufacturing techniques allow designers to introduce variations like tortoiseshell grey, which mutes traditional browns into cooler neutral tones. These subdued palettes appeal to those seeking a more understated look while still maintaining the organic depth and character that define tortoiseshell eyewear.
Popular Materials and Sustainable Alternatives
Today’s tortoiseshell frames are most often made from cellulose acetate—a plant-based plastic derived from wood pulp and cotton fibres. This material offers exceptional flexibility and can be polished to a high-gloss finish, mimicking the sheen of a genuine shell. Acetate is lightweight, hypoallergenic, and easily adjustable by opticians for a customized fit.
For those prioritizing sustainability, bio-acetate and recycled plastics provide eco-friendly alternatives. Brands are increasingly sourcing sustainable eyewear materials that reduce carbon footprint and waste. If you’re conscious about environmental impact but love the tortoiseshell glasses aesthetic, look for labels indicating recycled content or FSC-certified bio-acetate.
Tortoiseshell Sunglasses: Sun-Ready Styles
Tortoiseshell sunglasses pair practicality with panache, offering UV protection alongside a warm, inviting colour palette. Classic shapes like wayfarers, aviators, and cat-eyes come alive in tortoiseshell, allowing you to channel retro vibes or modern sophistication. Whether oversized or slim, these frames suit various face shapes and add an elegant edge to summer ensembles.
When choosing sunglasses, consider lens tints that harmonize with the frame’s hues—amber, brown, and green lenses enhance the warmth of traditional tortoiseshell, while grey or rose lenses complement tortoiseshell grey frames. Always prioritize lenses with 100% UV protection to safeguard your eyes without sacrificing style.
Tortoiseshell Glasses: Everyday Elegance
For prescription wearers, tortoiseshell glasses provide a chic alternative to plain black or metal frames. Their multifaceted colourations soften facial features and pair beautifully with both casual and professional attire. From slender rectangular shapes to bold round silhouettes, tortoiseshell frames add dimension and warmth to any look.
LSI keywords like frame materials, optical frames, and eyewear trends come into play when selecting the right pair. Consider your wardrobe’s dominant colours and choose a tortoiseshell shade that complements your skin tone—warmer amber tones for yellow or olive undertones and tortoiseshell grey for cooler, neutral complexions.
Tortoiseshell Grey: A Modern Neutral
Tortoiseshell grey represents a contemporary twist on the classic pattern, substituting warm browns with cool greys and charcoal flecks. This subdued palette suits minimalist and monochromatic wardrobes, offering versatility for both men and women. Grey tortoiseshell frames pair effortlessly with denim, black leather, and pastel hues alike.
The nuanced shading of tortoiseshell grey ensures the frames retain depth and textural interest. They’re perfect for those seeking a neutral frame with more personality than solid grey or black. Whether in sunglasses or optical glasses, these frames bridge the gap between tradition and modernity.
Choosing the Right Frame Shape for Your Face
Selecting the ideal tortoiseshell frames involves understanding your face shape. Round faces benefit from angular rectangular or square frames to add structure, while square faces are softened by round or oval shapes. Heart-shaped faces work well with browline or cat-eye silhouettes, and oval faces can flaunt almost any style—from wayfarers to oversized rounds.
When trying on frames, look for balance: tortoiseshell sunglasses should align with your brow line and sit comfortably on the bridge of your nose. Acetate frames like tortoiseshells allow slight adjustments at warm temperatures so an optician can fine-tune the fit for optimal comfort and stability.
Styling Tips: Pairing with Outfits and Accessories
Integrating tortoiseshell frames into your wardrobe is effortless, thanks to their warm, natural hues. For casual looks, pair tortoiseshell glasses with earth-toned clothing—olive greens, tans, and creams—to emphasize the frames’ organic appeal. Add complementary leather accents, like a brown belt or watch strap, for a cohesive ensemble.
When wearing tortoiseshell sunglasses with formal attire, choose crisp whites, navy blues, or charcoal greys to let the frames stand out. Accessorize with gold or rose-gold jewellery to echo the warm highlights in traditional tortoiseshell or silver pieces to accentuate tortoiseshell grey frames for a sleek, modern touch.
Caring for Your Tortoiseshell Frames
To preserve the lustre of your tortoiseshell frames, clean them regularly with a microfiber cloth and lens-safe cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals or paper towels that can scratch the acetate surface. Store your frames in a protective case to prevent accidental damage and exposure to extreme temperatures.
Acetate frames can warp if left in direct sunlight or near heat sources for long periods. To maintain their shape, keep them out of hot cars and away from radiators. For minor adjustments—like tightening loose screws—visit a professional optician rather than attempting DIY repairs.
Top Brands Offering Tortoiseshell Eyewear
Several eyewear brands excel in tortoiseshell designs. Luxury houses like Ray-Ban and Persol deliver timeless tortoiseshell sunglasses with impeccable craftsmanship. High-fashion labels such as Gucci and Prada introduce bold tortoiseshell patterns in eyewear collections, often incorporating signature shapes and embellishments.
For more budget-friendly options, Warby Parker and Zenni Optical offer a range of tortoiseshell glasses in both classic and modern silhouettes. Online retailers often feature notebook computer skin—pardon, scratch that—frame customization tools, allowing you to preview different tortoiseshell hues and shapes before purchase.
Where to Buy Authentic Tortoiseshell-Inspired Eyewear
When shopping for tortoiseshell frames, prioritize reputable retailers that guarantee genuine acetate construction and accurate colour rendering. Authorized brand boutiques, optical shops, and verified online platforms ensure you get quality acetate frames rather than low-grade plastics. Look for clear return policies and customer reviews to gauge satisfaction.
Avoid unbranded stalls or marketplaces selling “tortoise” patterns without specifying the material. Authentic tortoiseshell glasses should feel substantial yet lightweight, with smooth edges and consistent pattern depth. Trusted e-commerce sites—especially those offering virtual try-on tools—can help you make an informed decision from the comfort of your home.
Final Thoughts
From its historical roots to its contemporary iterations like tortoiseshell grey, tortoiseshell eyewear continues to captivate with its natural beauty and adaptability. Whether you opt for tortoiseshell sunglasses to shield your eyes in style or tortoiseshell glasses to elevate your daily look, these frames offer a harmonious blend of tradition and modern flair.
By understanding frame shapes, materials, and care practices, you can select and maintain tortoiseshell eyewear that complements your face and lifestyle. Embrace the enduring charm of tortoiseshell—where classic elegance meets contemporary innovation—to make a statement that’s both timeless and uniquely yours.

it doesn't quite feel real that I am leaving my first optical job and moving into my 2nd one. Like... when I was leaving state government, there was a lot of re-arranging for my work areas to be reassigned, getting all the unscanned vouchers sent to the Seattle office, dropping off telework equipment, like there was a process. Here, I'm doing the same thing I do every day and selling glasses and contacts and saying "come back and see us if you need any adjustments" except I'm not going to be part of that "us" at this location after Saturday.
I've been a little scared because I've gotten comfortable at this place, but this is the kind of career where you need to work in a variety of different environments to really find your niche. You can work your way up or you can work your way into adjacent jobs. If I end up hating being an optician, I could go into ophthalmology, I could be a frame rep, I could be a contact lens rep, I could do something different completely. I can GM a retail store or partner with a doctor and open our own practice. I could flee to a country as a skilled worker because opticians are in demand in places like Canada and Ireland.
oh, I know why it's weird and actually it's feeling a lot more real now
I think this is the first job where I felt loved by the people that I worked with and for whom I return that kind of love and respect for. At Target I had friends, sure, and I would enjoy going back to that store after quitting to say hi and see how things were going. At DCYF I felt incredibly and utterly alone and unsupported. I had barely AAAANYTHING in common with the rest of the team, hated the work I was doing, and was crushed under how much of it there was to do. Since Winco was a stop-gap, I set out to not make friends there since I wasn't planning on sticking around long enough.
This place though. Getting direct positive and meaningful feedback from other employees at other stores, being included in things as simple as a run to get smoothies or coffee. Getting training and then getting released to try it on my own with "I have full faith in you". Standing up for my coworkers and then having them stand up for me. Seasoned opticians being just a phone call away and hearing people say "if you need anything or have any questions don't hesitate to reach out" and know they actually mean it. I have some gripes with the company itself, but not the people.
One thing though is that optical and optometry is a small world. On Monday our Maui Jim rep came in looking for our assistant manager, and after we talked a bit I told him it was my last week. I mentioned where I was going to be working and he already knows the office manager even though they don't sell Maui Jim there.
So... I'm not going to be working directly with the same team but I'll still be in the periphery, and they're cheering me on. But damn, leaving a place where I've felt valued and cared for in a real way for the first time at a workplace to try for even better opportunities is pretty huge.

5. Customer Reviews and Reputation

Inquire about the aftercare services provided by the optician you are considering. At Abra & Co. Opticians, we believe in building lasting relationships with our clients. We offer complimentary adjustments, repairs, and refittings to ensure that your eyewear continues to meet your needs long after your initial purchase.Understanding that eye care is an ongoing journey rather than a one-time event allows you to feel supported throughout your experience. Look for an optician who prioritizes follow-up care and ensures that you never feel abandoned after a visit.
8. Transparency in Pricing
When selecting an optician, transparency in pricing is essential. You should have a clear understanding of the costs involved in your eye care, including eye tests, eyewear, and any additional services. At Abra & Co. Opticians, we pride ourselves on offering clear and competitive pricing for all our services. Our goal is to provide value without compromising on the quality of care. Before committing to an optician, ask about their pricing structure and any potential hidden fees. A reputable practice will be open and honest about the costs involved in your eye care journey.
9. Community Engagement
An optician who is engaged with the local community often reflects a commitment to providing quality care and support. Look for opticians who participate in community events or offer outreach programs that promote eye health awareness. At Abra & Co. Opticians, we take pride in being an integral part of our community, offering educational resources and support to help individuals understand the importance of eye health.Choosing an optician who values community engagement can enhance your overall experience and allow you to feel connected to the practice on a deeper level.
10. The Personal Touch
Finally, consider the overall atmosphere and personal touch of the optician’s practice. From the moment you walk in, you should feel welcomed and valued. A friendly and professional team can make all the difference in your experience. At Abra & Co. Opticians, we strive to create a warm and inviting environment where you feel comfortable discussing your eye care needs. The personal touch is what sets exceptional opticians apart from the rest. Look for practices that prioritize building relationships and creating a positive experience for every client.
