Something about Cain’s stony demeanour compelled Nick to speak more to the man. Not that he needed more justification to start rattling off old anecdotes – his mother always said he could talk a man to death if he wanted. Which always seemed kind of funny, made him imagine someone sucking up all the air out of a room with some long-winded speech, leaving everyone else to choke.

Actually, not that funny a mental image now that he thought about it.

Where was he going with this?

Right, Cain. He’d been entertaining the out of town journalist with stories from before this whole affair, about the Hope County he used to live in, the Seed family he used to know.

God, those guys were always weird.

“Well, they always seemed suspicious. Course, I never went around investigating them til – well, you know, everything started.” He leaned forward in his seat, as if about to emphasize a point. “Up until the whole evil militant fucking cult thing, they never really did anything… you know, evil murder cult-ish. Or they did. And were just good at hiding it.”

“Though if you want examples from now, just take a good look outside. Their followers’ve all been brainwashed or something. Doing all sorts of crazy shit. Hurting people, taking people’s property, all in the name of their ‘father’ or whatever.”
