Watercolor Layers. ⁣ This is one my favorite ways to create a lot of color and pattern quickly. Do you have a favorite object or thing you like to paint over and over again? ⠀⠀ I will never tire of botanicals. Any shape, form or medium just give me all the plants and flowers. I love reading about them, scouring photographs of different species, and haunting all the botanical gardens I can find. Someday I hope to stumble upon beautiful vintage botanicals memorabilia. Someday. Doing a little watercolor experiment today. I forgot how much I missed this medium and was happy to get a few moments to play today. I am going crazy over the colors and as always @mijello_mission never disappoints. I think I might add this to my Pocket Journal...but not before I make a copy and use it as an element in my Pocket.doc! Oh and can anyone guess what I painted on today? Watercolor is a medium that continues to allow me the opportunity to learn new things. ⠀⠀ I am learning that without practice I wouldn’t experience the joy of discovering what watercolor can do. ⠀⠀ I am learning that the rules of a medium don’t have to bind me when I am creating. ⠀⠀ I am learning that doing what feels natural is better than trying to force my hand at something. ⠀⠀ I am learning that a lot can be accomplished with one favorite paintbrush no matter the size. ⠀⠀ I am learning that when I do choose to apply the rules I can bend them, break them even and still enjoy painting with watercolor. ⠀⠀ And I am learning that being patient with myself is necessary in order for me to see growth in my progress. ⠀⠀ This painting was created in an @Arteza Watercolor Book. Do you have a dedicated journal for specific mediums or projects? For me it is more about what strikes me in the moment I am creating than which journal I am working in at the time. With that said I made this little journal for my little watercolor experiments but things happen, and sometimes a little acrylic ink and paint make their way onto the pages. If I am working with mixed media or collage I usually reach for a Pocket Journal (swipe to see some of my favorites). The funny thing is that I didn’t create either one of these journals (or any journal ever) with a specific medium in mind. Painting watercolor layers and embracing the brown. I almost never create with this forgiving medium without making at least a few earthy colors. I used to be so disappointed when my color mixing experiments ended in muddy puddles. Now I am realizing that without the experiments I wouldn’t gain the joy of discovering what these wonderful paints can do. And I am learning other things. Day 8 - Berries - Quickstart Watercolor Challenge [swipe to see more] __ I had to really work at these today. I didn’t have any visual inspiration and I rarely allow myself to use the internet for inspiration. I work hard to keep my work unique and staying off the computer helps! Day 7 - Flowers - Quickstart Watercolor Challenge [swipe to see more] __ This was one of my favorite prompts so far. The funny thing is that I never used to enjoy painting flowers because I never loved how they turned out. Something about painting flowers made me overthink things, made me try to create in ways that didn’t feel comfortable to my style of creating. After awhile I let go of the idea of making flowers that reflected “real” flowers and instead focused on making the florals that were stuck in my head.
