Why did wheat become a widespread staple crop given that it's difficult to harvest/transport/etc? This is not meant to be snarky or combative in any way, it's a genuine question. Are there any books you'd recommend for learning more about this kind of economic and technological history? Thanks.
sorry, i've long since forgotten all the actual books i've read about it, but i will always recommend This Guy:
also as very much a non-expert, my semi-informed opinion on Wheat is that growing complicated and difficult compared to going to the grocery store, and doesn't stack up very well to living in a food forest like north and south americans managed, either.
however, wheat is a grass, and grass grows in a lot of places that people also like to live in, and so wheat farming isn't as crazy a venture as it might otherwise seem.
in a lot of climates, it's possible to plant the grass, harvest the grass seeds, and store the seeds long enough to get you through the part of the year where there's nothing much to eat. if you manage your social and material technology right, you can store a lot of the seeds, and you can even transport them around before they rot, meaning you can now export the seeds from places where grass grows into places where it doesn't. the stalks of the grass that you can't eat provides food for the animals you need to help you grow the grass. and transport the seeds, too.
the social structure required to grow wheat in bulk (a steep and violent hierarchy) does three things: feeds everyone in it with enough extra that the guys on the bottom of the organization can survive to grow more wheat next year, and allows the guys on the top can sequester the rest as profit, consolidating their power. the third thing is that as land is converted to wheat fields, it stops yielding any other food but wheat, which locks people into the system for good. once a people depend on a staple cereal grain for their main source of calories, there isn't an easy way back: forests are chewed away for more wheat fields and those woodlands that remain are shifted towards hardwoods for agricultural tools, rather than food forests with fruit/nuts/shrubs, and even those maintained as game preserves still can't support the needs of entire villages.
in arid and semi-arid conditions, it's even harder to step away from dependence on grain farming because there the agricultural development is along rivers where the land can be irrigated, and the population of people supported by grain production is extremely concentrated into those small areas rather than spread across the entire biome.
in the northern parts of eurasia where grain couldn't be produced at scale because it was too rocky and too cold, people mostly went fishing, and when they grew stuff it was hardy root crops like beets and turnips.
DISCLAIMER: this is all very approximate. but now you know as much as i know.
P.S actually here's the last thing about wheat: it probably all started as a way to reliably source and produce beer, which was invented a long time before bread. bread was invented from wheat when the guys who were producing the beer seeds wanted to start exporting beer seeds to people who wanted beer far away, so they baked the seeds into tablets you could easily transport and then ferment with water once you got to your destination. eventually the traders who were transporting the beer kits started eating them, too, and crackers as a snack food really took off. look up the wikipedia article on beer if you don't believe me.

Misa Explains 1: Spintronics in a nutshell
A series of posts where I will explain bits and pieces of physics I have gathered throughout the my foray into this wonderful science. Warning, these will be long.
Highly inspired by @chemblrish and @minmin-vs-physics 's posts on their fields, check out their posts (linked on this post in various places!)
Wait what even is going on?
Okay, first of all, why are we even talking about spintronics, whatever that means? Now, we live in an age where we need devices, right? Phones, TVs, laptops, name it. All digital devices come under electronics, which is a cluster of what we call "logic devices" (verrry loosely speaking) with various functions, made with expert circuitry to create our sophisticated "smart" devices. Whew. That's a lot of words. But what does it mean? It means that the very device you're using to view this post is made up of very tiny mini devices, which are made to utilize electrical signals (current, flow of electrons) to make it store information, read information, or perform logic tasks ("AND", "OR" "NOT" and the rest. Let me know if you want me to explain those, but this is not the point of the post so I'm letting them hang in the air for now).
We store digital information in the form of 'bits' (I swear all of this is relevant, please be patient) which is a computer's language of storing and using information. If you've watched any show involving hacking, you'll see stacks after stacks of "1"s and "0"s on their high contrast screens in that radioactive green font (general older sister advice: don't use high contrast it hurts your eyes), these are bits and the basis on which logic devices work. Each combination of 1s and 0s makes a different information, which is the backbone of computing. Now, how these devices make 1s and 0s is again a whole course on electronics, so I will skip over it to just preface that they exist and that's how we make digital devices.
All these years, we have used semiconductors, which allow moderate amount of current flow from them (in contrast to conductors, which allow free flow of electrons, and insulators, which do not allow flow of electrons) to make transistors, which are currently the building blocks of circuit-making devices.
Tumblr media
[here's a picture containing ICs (the bug-like looking thing covered in wires) which have tiny transistors inside them, and the LEDs, on which the lit ones are "1"s and unlit ones are "0"s. This was my project for one of my courses!]
In electronics, a very famous law called Moore's Law, states that for increase in tech and development, the amount of transistors in integrated circuits (IC) doubles every two years. This moves proportionally with the increase in use of semiconductors, because transistors are made using them.
Every device maker's main goal is to make a device faster, smoother, and more functional. Which means, more transistors, better semiconductors. Moreover, the smaller space occupied by the ICs, the better. But obviously there's a limit to how much we can decrease the size of the transistors. One is the technical issue of creating such a small object, which will require highly precise instruments which we are not in possession of/ not feasible in the long run. The second issue is the working. "Will a semiconductor keep it's properties when they layer is so small?" is a valid question to ask when we go further down in scale. In simple words: in the long run, improving semiconductors for transistors will be difficult. Moore's law plateaus, and the number of transistors doesn't double with two years. What now? We can't just stop developing better computing devices, not just smart devices, astronomy, medicine and other scientific areas also require reliable, stable and fast computing devices.
Which means we desperately need new materials (and techniques) for logic and memory devices.
Hold on, when's spintronics going to start?
Okay background information done. Now we move onto spins and why we use it. We know that atoms are made of protons, electrons and neutrons. Out of these, electrons "revolve" in "orbits" around the nucleus, which holds the protons and neutrons. I put "revolve" and "orbits" in quotes because essentially it's a cloud of probabilities and we have no clue what path it truly takes. Electrons reside in what are called 'orbitals', which are balloon-like spaces which have a high probability of the electrons being present in (@/chemblrish explains orbitals better here).
Now along with the "revolution", electrons also considered to have a "spin". We don't really know if it "spins" the way Bayblades do, but regardless, they have an angular momentum, which is classically something rotating objects possess (@/mimin-vs-physics goes more in depth on quantum mechanical fun stuff) Either way, we don't know why it has angular momentum, but we know it does (at least I have no idea if we've figured it out??). And in true human fashion, we see anything new and think "now how can I utilize this for my benefit?"
Years and years of research later, we figured out something interesting. The angular momentum which the electron spins contain, and the angular momentum of electrons in "orbits" can interact! This interaction is called Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) and it causes a bunch of other fascinating phenomena in quantum mechanics. One of which, is that it if we supply electricity into a metal plane, we can align the electrons and their spins in such a way that it causes a stream of current (remember: current is essentially a flow of electrons in one direction) with aligned spins to move into a different layer perpendicularly.
Okay but what does all of this have to do anything with Spintronics?
We're finally at the part where we can discuss what Spintronics is! We can use our now generated spin current to make electronic devices (hence, spintronics!). So, how do we make these tiny devices?
What we first take is a heavy metal (these are metallic elements/alloys with high atomic numbers, which have a lot of free electrons to use) and make a very thin film of it. (The procedure of making thin films is very interesting, and I will make the next post on it!) We can now pass a stream of current/electricity* parallel to the surface of the thin film, which will give us a stream of spin-aligned electrons bouncing to move into an upper layer.
For the upper layer, we add a thin layer of a ferromagnet. A ferromagnet is a type of material which readily aligns its spin on one direction when under a magnetic field (contrary to this are paramagnets which weakly align their spins, and diamagnets which weakly align their spins opposite to the applied field).
Now remember the electrons with their spin aligned which wanted to move into the upper layer? Yeah once they are given an upper layer to move into, they flow into the layer, bringing their aligned spins with them. This spin can now affect the ferromagnet's spin, and align it in either the direction of the applied electric field ( the one applied on the heavy metal layer. I'm marking it as * for you to check which electric field I mean) or directly opposite to the direction of the electric field. This alignment can be measured. The value doesn't matter, only the direction. Is it parallel to the electric field or anti-parallel? "Up" or "down"? "Left" or "right"? Or, in terms of electronics, "1" or "0".
And look! We now have a way to make a tiny device which can display values of "1" or "0"! We used an analog signal (electricity) to create a digital output (1s and 0s)! That is electronics! But because it uses spins, it is called Spintronics.
Because we use Spin-Orbit Coupling, these devices are extremely precise and fast. And the layers of heavy metal/ferromagnet will be in the ranges of nanometers (10^-9 m), so they are also extremely small. We can also choose materials with properties we like (high melting/boiling point, low reactivity) to create devices which can work in extreme conditions (high heat, pressure, reactive areas).
And here we have it! We've made spintronic devices!
End of post disclaimer: I am a Bachelors student and I will have mistakes. I also tend to exaggerate. So if I have made a mistake in this post, please inform me nicely in the comments or tags!

Logan’s radios break my heart every week, it really feels like he’s got no more fight. Someone please hug him, everything just seems to go wrong for him. This was the one weekend he was finally going to get all the upgrades and have the exact same car as Alex…and then the new floor didn’t correlate or respond the way Alex’s does so they had to go back to the old spec. It really feels like all the cards are stacked against him😭
Yeah he just seems to have had so much working against him.
I’m not a Logan expert at all so this is just my opinion but from what I understand he probably jumped up to F1 too soon and could have done with another season in F2. I think that means his first season was always going to be shaky but really it should have been this season that he settled into things and showed that he can deliver consistent performances.
The problem is that he had a lot of bad luck at the start of the season that wasn’t even his fault, like having to give up his car! On top of that it seems despite deciding to keep him on for this season Williams weren’t really planning on giving him the season to develop and have openly said they want to replace him. To me that just means that rather than be able to focus on putting in consistent performances he has had to try and push more than he should to try and do something spectacular to somehow save his seat and this really hasn’t helped because it just means he is going to over drive the car and have accidents.
He’s also got the added problem that if he is going to be out of a seat at Williams it’s hard for him to prove to another team he is worth taking on because he has been driving around without the upgrades so is going to look even worse comparatively to Albon.
I do get that F1 is cutthroat and you need to perform but he does seem to have had a lot working against him. Honestly it might do him the world of good to go to another race series next year where he can build his confidence back up and show what he can do. There would be absolutely no shame in doing that, maybe he could return to F1, maybe not. He is always going to be an F1 point scorer and there are very talented drivers out there who can’t even say that.
But yes, he needs someone to hug him and praise him please!

Full Stack Development Made Simple: Expert Tips from Thelma Ivuka Onwukwe
Tumblr media
Thelma Ivuka Onwukwe, a full stack development expert, explains that full stack development means working on both the front end (what users see) and the back end (how the website or app works behind the scenes). A full stack developer can build a complete website or application from start to finish, including designing web pages, writing code, connecting to databases, and making sure everything runs smoothly. This role requires knowledge of many tools and programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript for the front end, and Python, Node.js, or PHP for the back end. Thelma Ivuka Onwukwe says being a full stack developer is useful because it allows one person to understand the entire system, solve problems quickly, and build better, faster, and more efficient digital solutions.

I mean my main goal short term is to land a job lol but I am srsly considering making the jump to game dev bc some guy on reddit put into perspective a lot of things I don't really like about web dev and How difficult it is to be an expert at something bc the scene (for lack of a better term) just moves too quickly. You blink and everyone is on the next big thing. I've got 5 years of experience as an SDET/QA Engineer but if u ask me basic Selenium questions, I can't answer that bc I haven't touched Selenium in a while as we've been making the switch to Playwright in my last job. It's literally on my resume bc I've worked with it. Also most of my experience is with start ups where there's barely any legacy code so you can just pick the next big thing and use that for ur tech stack.
It Is the same with being a developer and maybe it's the comp eng degree talking but what if what if I just wanna work on C++ and unreal all day everyday for the next 10 years or so and get really REALLY good at it. Sure things change with the next version but it's not as if ur relearning javascript again but they swear it's different now

My Perspective on Distinguishing Between Full Stack Developers and Web Developers
I can’t help but go back to my own experience as a web developer as I sit down to write about the difference between full stack developers and web developers. This subject has a special meaning to me since it captures the essence of navigating this fast-paced industry. In order to better appreciate the contrasts between these two jobs, let’s set out on a voyage, and I’ll share my viewpoint and experiences along the way.
We frequently mix the terms “full stack developer” and “web developer” while discussing web development. They stand for several jobs, each with their own set of tasks and abilities. Whether you’re an experienced developer, a newcomer in the industry, or someone pursuing a career in technology, it’s vital to comprehend these contrasts.
Defining Full Stack Developers and Web Developers
Developers who work on the complete stack: Let’s start by defining a full stack developer. In terms of web development, a full stack developer is essentially a jack of all crafts. Both front-end and back-end technologies are familiar to them. This implies that they are capable of managing databases and server-side functionality in addition to designing the user interface. They are essentially the Swiss Army tools of web development.
Web Developers: known as front-end developers — concentrate mostly on the client side of web development. They are masters in using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create stunning and engaging user interfaces. Their main objective is to provide a smooth and visually pleasing user experience on a website.
Tumblr media
I had a basic comprehension of these jobs when I first started working as a web developer. Like many novices, I mistakenly believed that web programming was solely about producing visually stunning websites. But I quickly understood there was much more to it.
Common Ground: Overlapping Skills
It’s important to acknowledge the areas of overlap between web developers and full stack developers before we get into their distinctions. A solid foundation in front-end development is necessary for both professions. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript proficiency are essential. These languages are your building blocks whether you’re creating a user interface or incorporating sophisticated capabilities.
These front-end abilities were the start of my adventure. I devoted endless hours to polishing my HTML structures, honing my CSS stylesheets, and exploring JavaScript’s potential as an interactive language. These abilities laid the foundation for my profession and are still crucial today.
Delving into Full Stack Development
Let’s now explore full stack development, where the distinctions are more apparent. In addition to being experts in front-end technologies, full stack developers are also knowledgeable in back-end technologies. This covers database management as well as server-side programming languages like Python, Ruby, or Node.js.
Making the switch to back-end development was a turning point for me. Working with databases and server logic first made me feel uneasy. I took the challenge, though, and began studying server-side languages and databases. Even if things weren’t always easy, every challenge I overcame helped me become a better developer.
Web Development: Focusing on the Front End
Web developers, on the other hand, focus on the front end. Their area of expertise is designing captivating, engaging user interfaces. They take great care in website design, making sure that it is aesthetically pleasing, responsive, and user-friendly.
I still clearly recall my first front-end-focused web programming project. Making an interactive and practical design come to life was thrilling. Web developers enjoy the particular high of witnessing a beautifully designed website in use.
Bridging the Gap: The Versatility of Full Stack Developers
The capacity to integrate front-end and back-end development is one of the defining traits of full stack engineers. This adaptability is revolutionary in the tech sector. Full stack developers are able to handle all aspects of development, taking a project from inception to conclusion.
Being a full stack developer has provided me with access to a variety of projects. I’ve had the honor of working on anything from data-driven applications to e-commerce websites. This versatility has improved my skill set and given me the ability to take on a variety of difficulties.
My Personal Journey
I can’t help but thank the mentors, classes, and resources that have molded my perspective as I consider my career as a developer. Participating in coding groups, taking full stack developer courses provided by ACTE Institute, and learning from seasoned developers have all been extremely beneficial to my development.
Tumblr media
Realizing that no one becomes a full stack developer or web developer over night is essential. It is a path of ongoing learning and development. And keep in mind that each person’s journey is distinctive, formed by their experiences and decisions.
The Ever-Changing Tech Landscape
The only thing that is consistent in the tech sector is change. Both web developers and full stack developers need to keep up with the latest trends and technology. Adaptability is essential, from the emergence of new programming languages to the development of front-end frameworks.
I’ve seen firsthand how quickly tools and techniques for web development have advanced. In this always changing sector, adapting to change and remaining curious have been essential.
In conclusion, anyone navigating the IT sector needs to be aware of the differences between full stack engineers and web developers. Each role has its own advantages and difficulties. Remember that your path as a developer is an ongoing discovery whether you decide to focus on one or embrace the variety of the other.

Sapience re: Constructs
I continue to go down the rabbit hole of "how do I bullshit science and magic together" for my headworld, today it's enchantments
In this world, "artificial intelligence" is the magical manifestation of a will on a physical object via enchantment, often referred to as "constructs" or "cons" for short. The level of AI is limited by the inclusion of technology or lack thereof; a maximum of Stage 3 is capable on low to no tech objects, while all Stages are theoretically possible on a sufficiently technologically advanced object. The stages are as follows:
Basic: The enchanted equivalent of a simple tool and usually only possesses an on/off switch of sorts. Cannot improve upon itself nor be trained.
Competent: Designed for a specific task and can accept new data to improve functionality. May respond to inputs in a human-like manner, but has no sense of self.
Refined: Capable of being trained beyond its original parameters and develop mastery in a specified domain. Can pass or exceed tests for human-like intelligence.
Awakened: The beginnings of sapience with reasoning and emotions. However it lacks creativity and requires external input, possessing no initiative at all.
Autonomous: Possesses true self-awareness and is completely indistinguishable from a human. It acts on its own initiative and can creatively solve problems.
Master: Similar to Stage 5, but is also capable of outperforming any expert in any field and can do the work of multiple people to manage or solve complex tasks.
Omniscient: Improves itself at a rate that gets exponentially faster over time. For better or worse, once started its growth cannot be stopped nor reversed.
Stage 7 is Literally the Singularity but I wanted it to be called something else because the term feels overused in sci-fi settings. Based on the 7 Stages of Artificial Intelligence outlined in this Stack Exchange post.
Despite AI being near unexplainable except "lol magic", advanced technology and materials are still required to create a framework for the enchantment to latch onto and create a functioning artificial brain. There was nothing remotely like sapient AIs before the Great War spawned magic itself. On that note, trying to enchant a will onto a dead or even a braindead complex organic body is a very bad idea. Do Not Do. Talking animal familiars are still strictly the domain of fiction as well.
The scale is also more than a bit controversial and sparks a lot of debates along the lines of "then what are people if not Stage 5 meat constructs?", does it matter if it's wetware instead of hardware? Arguments are formed around the fact that humans are born with wills and not enchanted to have them.
The reason why this is all here is that I realized something about what I wrote about magic/tech earlier and how I've basically bullshitted a semi-plausible way to have Chasseur in my headworld, lmao. He's technically an enchanted object/construct, with a "will" put upon him to give him intelligence and a heart. Chasseur falls under Stage 5 due to being completely self-aware and has intelligence levels on par with that of the average human or slightly beyond, but he can't "multitask" on gargantuan projects like a Stage 6 can.
On that note, Stages 6 and 7 cannot be created, but a construct with the appropriate frameworks and hardware can grow into them with enough time. While Stage 4 and above are exceedingly rare, the fact that the scale already exists during my narrative means the members of the 553 Unit were not the first autonomous robots on record. c:

I'm gonna need everyone in the comments to stop watching conspiracy theories until they have a wholesome understanding of the peer reviewed science first, because y'all are perpetuating racist nazi rhetoric and you don't even realize you are doing it, or if you do you don't know why it's wrong.
No, Graham Hancock's theories don't hold water, he made them up to support his idea that some ancient superior race of white people (giants) visited the whole world in antiquity and taught people how to, checks notes, stack rocks and track the consistent movement of heavenly bodies. He got "experts" to support his shit for his Netflix series so people are more likely to accept it as fact, it's an appeal to authority fallacy, and he frames the presentation of these fantasies as "they're trying to silence me/don't want people knowing this" because he knows that making people feel like they're at risk of oppression for believing in something makes them cling to those beliefs more tightly.
No, alternative theories (hypotheses) aren't discounted by "mainstream academia" because they're trying to like, oppress truth seekers or whatever, they're discounted because they don't hold up to the scientific method. We know what ancient Egypt was like because they were big on documenting their society in writing, that we can translate.
The Dendera "light bulb" isn't a light bulb because the inscriptions above it literally identify it as a creation myth, where a snake is born from a lotus and creates the universe (iirc) and that's also exactly what it looks like. Ancient Egyptians didn't have electricity, they just had some wacky myths and even wackier ways of portraying them.
No, the pyramids all around the world aren't exactly the same. They're built in different styles with different orientations and functions, using different methods of construction as well as materials and ornamentation. They look similar because it's literally the easiest and most stable way to stack rocks, and because of how stable the structure is it's less likely to collapse, erode or shift with time, meaning of all structures built by ancient people those stuck around because of physics, while other structures were destroyed over time because of physics.
As a few people in the comments have already said, humans develop and invent technology as we need it with what we have access to. Ancient Egypt didn't fail to invent electrical grids because they were an inferior race, it's because they had no use for them, nor did they have the right materials or knowledge. And they didn't lack the knowledge because they were brown, they lacked it because the world was much more disconnected and related knowledge wasn't sufficiently pooled for the discovery of advanced knowledge. In other words they didn't have the internet.
Please go watch videos from people like milo Rossi (miniminuteman) or history of the earth and history of the universe, and veritasium, and astrum, and astroalexandra. Understand the peer reviewed, evidence based, tested and tested and tested and proven facts, and then approach conspiracy theories again with critical thinking. You don't know the damage you're doing to your own reasoning and knowledge base by taking conspiracy theorists at their word. The truth is a million times more interesting anyway, and with the true knowledge you can make decisions that have more positive outcomes, because you based them on fact.
Listen my dudes Ancient Egypt existed for a really fuckass long time. Literally just Pharaonic civilization lasted 3,000 years. That’s not even including predynastic civilization and Roman rule. If you lump that in you’re looking at more like… 5,000 years. Like. If you want a comparison of how long that is: THE YEAR IS CURRENTLY 2018. TWO THOUSAND. TWO-THIRDS OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN PHARAONIC CIVILIZATION HAVE HAPPENED SINCE THE ‘BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST’ We comparatively just entered the Third Intermediate Period. The Greeks will not take over for another 700~ years. Cleopatra will not be born until the year 2931.
It’s a really long time guys.
