#tombstonetuesday An unmarked wooden headstone at the barren, but picturesque Bullfrog-Rhyolite Cemetery near the ghost town of Rhyolite, #Nevada. Only a handful of marked stones exist in this cemetery. Most are unmarked mounds, some with piles of rocks or wooden grave markers, or have simple iron fencing around them. I'm back in #NewJersey but I have so many photos to share with you. On the first full day of my trip I stopped at Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument in Clark County, #Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas. At this location in 1933, quarry workers unearthed a pile of bones from a mammoth. This discovery led to the Tule Springs expedition, led by paleontologist Fenley Hunter of the American Museum of Natural History. Scientists continued to research the area for decades, hoping to find evidence of early contact between early humans and extinct late ice age animals. In 1962, scientists from the Nevada State Museum conducted the "Big Dig," creating trenches up to a mile long. During this excavation, scientists discovered an abundance of large animal fossils, such as mammoths, camels, bison, ground sloths, and the Giant North American lion, ranging from 7,000 to 250,000 years old. The park was also the site where scientists first applied the technique of radiocarbon dating in the United States. #tombstonetuesday In the corner of the Bullfrog-Rhyolite Cemetery in #Nevada, there is a modern grave surrounded by faux flowers and trinkets. It is the grave of Mary Elizabeth White Madison, also known as "Panniment Annie" (June 22, 1912 - 1979). Mary was born in Virginia, married at the age of 15, left her husband in Boston to run bootleg whiskey from Canada to Chicago, and worked her way west to Nevada. It was in Nevada that she learned to prospect and find minerals from a group of three old-time prospectors who watched out for her. She preferred the deserts and mountains to the town life. Her older kids went to school with family in Southern California and when her youngest was of school age, she settled down into a hodge-podge shack on the edge of the desert in the town of Beatty. She made a living performing car repairs and selling homemade jelly, crocheted hats, and jewelry. Her summers were spent in the mountains and hills of the Mojave desert around the edges of Death Valley looking for gold. According to an obituary, during hard times (of which there were many) she fed her children rattlesnake or rabbit stew. But there were also prosperous times, when she found good mines (although the money never lasted long).
