Nickel Boron Coating Specialist

Nickel Boron plating offers an alternative to chrome plating that provides superior corrosion protection as well as excellent wear, abrasion and lubricity characteristics.

Electroless nickel baths contain reducing agents with boron content to create the coating, which can then be applied to carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and copper alloys.

Hardness

TwinClad XT was initially developed to address poor mold part release and continuous wear on plastic injection molds. A midphos. electroless nickel bath containing boron nitride particles co-deposited within its coating provides superior lubricity and wear resistance; after heat treatment this hard coating ranges from 54 - 67 Rockwell hardness with an extremely low coefficient of friction.

Nickel boron coating (NBC) offers more durability and hardness than chrome plating when compared with ferritic nitrocarburizing (FNC), offering higher corrosion protection while still being non-toxic compared with FNC; moreover, EXO Nickel Boron Coating's FailZero warranty guarantees it never flakes off under normal use! Furthermore, NBC increases heat dissipation so your BCG will run cooler than regular BCGs!

Corrosion Resistance

Nickel boron coatings offer exceptional corrosion protection in harsh environments that could otherwise erode other surface finishes, including chrome plating, nickel teflon plating and ferritic nitrocarburizing.

Electroless nickel-boron coatings can be applied to metal surfaces by immersing the workpiece in a solution containing both nickel salts and a boron-containing reducing agent, such as alkylamine borane or sodium borohydride, along with complexants and buffers for complexanting and buffering purposes. Autocatalytic chemical reduction processes take place automatically in this form of electroless plating, eliminating the electric current requirement necessary in traditional electroplating processes.

Nickel boron coatings produced in these baths usually feature high phosphite content of up to 5%, making them excellent at resisting corrosion in harsh environments. Furthermore, these nickel boron coatings are polishable, solderable and possess good conductivity - properties which make CDC ideal for applications that demand corrosion resistance, such as oilfield components such as pumping motors and pump valves, print cylinders/actuators as well as machined parts with complex geometries.

Wear Resistance

Our nickel plating company boron coatings offer exceptional wear resistance and damage tolerance, as well as being capable of withstanding high temperatures without losing hardness or lubricity, making them an excellent solution for applications in which BCGs must function in harsh environments with limited or no lubrication, such as suppressed rifles.

We accomplish this by immersing a stainless steel substrate in a nickel bath containing nickel ions, metal ion complexing agents and borohydride reducing agents; then catalytically reducing them without electricity to form electroless nickel (EN). Next, boron ions are added to the plating solution in order to form microcrystalline nickel-boron coating on it, giving rise to improved wear resistance, corrosion protection and lubricity as well as superior damage tolerance than ferritic nitrocarburizing (FNC), improved solderability as well. Finally, these coatings can even be co-deposited with other materials such as Teflon or Diamond depending upon specific performance needs of our clients.

Lubricity

Years ago, manufacturers seeking maximum corrosion protection and hardness turned to chrome plating as their finishing technique of choice. But concerns regarding its toxic effect led them to search for alternatives; one of which led KC Jones Plating 12 years ago when they observed how adding boron into an electroless gold nickel plating bath would alter deposit characteristics; producing an NBN coating with all the corrosion and wear resistance of hard chrome without the toxic hexavalent chromium exposure.

NBN also stands out with its self-lubricating properties. A BCG coated with NBN doesn't stick together like it would when coated in phosphate, making cleaning easier. Furthermore, NBN outshines its counterpart when it comes to reducing friction between critical surfaces like carrier/upper receiver or cam pin and cam pin which contributes to greater reliability when the rifle is dirty or underlubricated.
