The Truth About Power: It was Never About Us
The Truth About Power: It was Never About Us
Written by D. Marshall Jr While we’re out here worrying about the hateful rhetoric being fed to us by those in power, we’re missing the bigger picture. It was never about the economy. It was never about making life better for those at the bottom. It was never about securing legal immigration. It was never about helping the world become a better place. It has always been about power—about…

An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
It’s time for Supreme Court term limits!
408 so far! Help us get to 500 signers!
I’m writing as your constituent to urge you to cosponsor the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization Act of 2023 (H.R. 5566, TERM Act), re-introduced by Rep. Hank Johnson. The United States is the only major constitutional democracy in the world that doesn’t have term limits for our top justices. It’s a flaw in our system that must be corrected. Rep. Johnson’s TERM Act would introduce fixed 18-year terms for current and future Supreme Court justices and establish regular nominations of justices in the first and third years of each presidential term as the sole means of Supreme Court appointments. This reform is supported by 7 in 10 voters, including myself, and would put an end to the partisanship that surrounds Supreme Court vacancies, and return the Court to a body that is representative of the values of the American people. Help restore trust in America’s highest court by cosponsoring the TERM Act! Thanks.

Addressing Sampling Concerns in Customer Analysis
Ensuring Fair Representation – Addressing Gender Balance in Airbnb’s Customer Sampling
Ensuring that all demographics are fairly represented when analyzing customer data is crucial. Suppose concerns arise that a disproportionate number of sampled customers are men; it’s important to address this by recalculating probabilities and ensuring that the promotional event appeals to a balanced audience. By understanding the gender distribution of Airbnb users, the company can tailor its marketing efforts to ensure inclusivity and fairness in the promotional event, aligning with its commitment to diversity.

Statement on Florida Court Ruling Overturning Racist Voter Maps
Tumblr media
Today, a 2nd Circuit Court Judge in Florida sided with Black Voters Matter, Equal Ground Education Fund, League of Women Voters of Florida, and Florida Rising and agreed that our position, that DeSantis’ Map diminished the voting power of Black voters in violation of the Florida Constitution, would likely succeed on the merits.  Today’s decision means that DeSantis’ racially gerrymandered map, which re-configured Florida’s Congressional District 5, will not be used for the 2022 election.  While the State will appeal the decision, we consider this a major victory for Black Voters in Florida’s Congressional District 5, and we, along with the other co-plaintiffs will continue to fight to have DeSantis’ entire unconstitutional and racist map thrown out.
Today and going forward, Black Voters Matter remains committed to using every democratic tool to increase political power for Black people in this country. Litigation has been and remains one of those tools, but a multi-pronged threat needs a multi-pronged solution. That’s why we are continuing to mobilize our communities, pressuring Congress to pass much-needed voting rights legislation, and demanding that the President use all of his executive power to protect the rights of Black voters. And it’s why we’re urging voters to join the fight for voting rights by signing our One Million For Voting Rights petition. In southern states like Florida, where the rights of Black people are constantly under attack, the need for federal action on voting rights simply could not be clearer.
Now, we must keep the faith. We firmly believe that the cause to expand political rights in this country to all people, which will allow us to share in power and resources is a just cause, and if we faint not, we will win.
Tonight at 6:00 p.m. ET, Black Voters Matter and the co-plaintiffs in the case will hold a Twitter town hall space to discuss next steps in the Florida case. You can join on Twitter by following @BlackVotersMtr.

Fair representation in the NUS - motion 701
I write this late as I switch my mind from wheelchair basketball communities to NUS national conference, before my train leaves for Sheffield tomorrow! Getting involved in disabled sport has been liberating for me because I suddenly realise I really could do something other than work in my community. Then I got involved, started talking to the team and realised that they, like many other aspects of society, were working on representing themselves and supporting the club longer term. So it got me to thinking because, as the only disabled female in the club, I'm representing disabled women in London Sparrows and everyone else is male. As a woman I play differently, my points are automatically dropped by 1.5 and I haven't grown up with the male sport influences like my team-mates. However, what is different between the disparity shown in the Sparrows and the NUS conference floor?  If there is a difference I'm not seeing it. I attend basketball training because I'm passionate and I aim for the stars in everything I do. I want the world to be accessible to everyone; no matter where you come from or how you self-define. Whether that is in my local sporting community or further afield in the international political sphere. I don't believe gender should be a reason why anyone doesn't have a voice.
So when motion 701 goes to conference floor, and the battle commences as to whether it should become policy, I will be hoping that fair representation is voted in. I want a national campaign that supports gender balance. I want a conference floor that gives a voice to all self-defined women and those that aren't cis-gendered men. In a country where 56% of the NUS membership is female and 55% in my institution; why have they only got one woman attending conference as a delegate? How can women be enthused to get involved when they live in a world where the men make all the decisions.
I am excited that the two strongest contenders for NUS President are women and look forward to working in an NUS campaign over the next year with a strong gender balanced group of people. If the liberations elect women as officers because they're good enough. It's time for NUS to allow those who aren't as strong to develop their voice and where better to do that than on conference floor?
I got involved in student politics because Claire Locke pushed me to follow my heart. My heart led to being the outstanding student council member, working on disability and LGBT* liberation campaigns and now elected onto the NUS disabled students campaign as the LGBT representative. I'm one of the first women from London Metropolitan University to be elected into the NUS (if not the first in recent years) but I don't want to be the only woman. I want all woman at my university and beyond to have the chance to get involved and for their voice to be heard. I want it to be normal to have women making decisions and sharing the voice of their institution. I want patriarchy out of student politics and I want misogyny to lose it's hold.
I want fair representation because nobody should be worried of not being heard. Everyone has a powerful voice and as a movement we should harness the female voice not diminish it in cis-male patriarchy.
I want fair representation because in future I want there to be a movement that thinks it's normal to have minority groups in positions as voted by the majority.
I want fair representation because I have a dream that one day the delegates to NUS National Conference will not be just male/female ratio but will have designated spaces for liberation campaigns. So that disabled, LGBT*, black and international students will be heard beyond the reach of their own campaigns.
I need fair representation because not all women have mentors like I did or the beauty of belonging to strong gender-balanced liberations.
I need fair representation because I am a suffragette and we still have a long way to go!
