Are you a fan of games like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics? Well, you have this game to thank! This is Bokosuka Wars, a Japan-exclusive Famicom title released in Japan in 1983. It was originally released for computers, but the Famicom received this altered version. Bokosuka Wars is considered to be the first SRPG (also known as Tactics RPG), and paved the way for games like Fire Emblem. Surprisingly, the game actually received a sequel in 2017, 34 years after the original, titled Bokosuka Wars II.

Happy #FamicomFriday! Keeping with the trend of early SRPGs, this is the first entry in the Fire Emblem series, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. Most people outside of Japan didn't begin playing Fire Emblem on a large scale until the release of Fire Emblem: Awakening in 2013 on the 3DS. But the series actually began way back on the Famicom, releasing in 1990 from the same developer as the earlier Famicom Wars.

Hey cats! We're going to be posting a new weekly little retro game thing every week, called #FamicomFriday! It will mostly cover Famicom Exclusive titles or games that have version differences between regions. Here's out first one! Ever wonder why we got a game called The Goonies II in the US, but never just The Goonies? Well, there actually was a Goonies game! Exclusive to the Famicom in Japan, The Goonies was a puzzle-platformer released by Konami in 1986. The game plays similar to its successor, but much less difficult. It doesn't have those confusing first person sections in it like The Goonies II. Although it never saw retail release in North America, it did get a port to the Vs. Arcade system, called VS. The Goonies, and was also available for the PlayChoice-10 system. It's unknown why The Goonies never saw release outside Japan, but it was most likely due to licensing issues.
