Fandom Problem #9306:
The fact that more and more people seem averse to any sort of conflict in media while addicted to it in real life.
I think part of it stems from overcorrecting, 2000s media typically had a mean-spirited, cynical edge, and seemingly in response, the 2010s onward seem cloyingly wholesome by comparison. I used to hate it when if felt like every character hated each other for no reason, for what was to me, pointless, cheap drama. I was tired of "jokes" where the punchline a seemingly sincere emotional moment getting yoinked at the last second.
So it felt nice when characters were friendly with each other, but after a while it got to the point where it feels like there actually is potential for an interesting conflict that they just don't explore because they'd rather everyone be insta-forever-besties. It made me appreciate that "characters hating each other" isn't always just "cheap drama". Sometimes you just have irreconcilable differences with someone and still have to see them every day regardless. I prefer that than always getting smothered under a blanket of "We. Are. Friends. :3 We. Are. Friends. :3 We. Are. Friends. :3". Plus it makes it feel more special and more earned when characters actually DO like each other, when they don't just like everybody.
It feels like people are just refusing to see anything even almost approaching a conflict in media.
People talk about how much they hate "enemies to lovers" and the example provided where never even enemies!! Films with a PG rating used to be able to show boobs and blood, and now movies for actual literal babies get slapped with a PG rating when there's gasp oh no! a tough conversation about feelings?? And listen - I like Bluey. I do! Yes it's better than most preschool shows and yes it has child psychologists working on it and blah blah "healing your inner child" blah blah blah. But adults losing their minds and crying for weeks because a cartoon dog family almost had to MOVE??? (and then, didn't?????????)
All this AND YET!! Looking for reasons to be actively hostile to strangers minding their business, reaching for ways to assume the worst of everybody, saying awful things and expecting zero blowback. What happened? What is going on?
