I'm pretty new to the fandom but I'm all caught up on the manga and anime. Apparently there are a lot of connections I've missed so I wouldn't be surprised if this question is stupid, but why is the Reiss family the real royal family if Ymir's last name was Fritz?

For anime only fandom, SPOILERS.

Your question is not stupid at all, it is something we have been discussing since the release date of chapter 86. Many meta writers, including me, thought Reiss and Fritz were two separate families, I even had different theories about this topic which all failed. lol. So don’t feel bad about asking this please!

We learned that after gaining titan powers Ymir Fritz become the goddess of Eldians and the ruler of Eldia. Her bloodline is special, only someone from her bloodline can control the power of a titan with full potential. That is how Eren managed to control all those titans at chapter 50, he punched Dina Fritz in her titan form and this triggered the coordinate powers within him. There are people, including me, have theories that this may be the reason why Zeke Fritz Jaeger can control Titans, even though he does not have the Coordinate.

A hundred year ago, when First King done with earth’s shit and decided to build his Paradise, he also changed his name so that nobody would ever find him and the Coordinate. He changed his name to Reiss and put the puppet king our main cast dethroned at Uprising Arc rule as his place. But it was all a game, Wall Church knew who true royal family is and they kept protecting the secrets of them to the end. First King also made a deal with Founding Titan itself to stop any of his predecessors’ change the order he built. It was all to protect himself. We were not sure about this a while ago, but at chapter 90 when Eren hold Historia’s hand and had a flashback about what happened at Reiss Cave, it was confirmed that First King changed his name to Reiss so that no one would ever discover him.
