A profoundly stupid case about video game cheating could transform adblocking into a copyright infringement
Tumblr media
I'm coming to DEFCON! On Aug 9, I'm emceeing the EFF POKER TOURNAMENT (noon at the Horseshoe Poker Room), and appearing on the BRICKED AND ABANDONED panel (5PM, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01). On Aug 10, I'm giving a keynote called "DISENSHITTIFY OR DIE! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification" (noon, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01).
Tumblr media
Here's a weird consequence of our societal shift from capitalism (where riches come from profits) to feudalism (where riches come from rents): increasingly, your rights to your actual property (the physical stuff you own) are trumped by corporations' metaphorical "intellectual property" claims.
That's a lot to unpack! Let's start with a quick primer on profits and rents. Capitalists invest money in buying equipment, then they pay workers wages to use that equipment to produce goods and services. Profit is the sum a capitalist takes home from this arrangement: money made from paying workers to do productive things.
Now, rents: "rent" is the money a rentier makes by owning a "factor of production": something the capitalist needs in order to make profits. Capitalists risk their capital to get profits, but rents are heavily insulated from risk.
For example: a coffee shop owner buys espresso machines, hires baristas, and rents a storefront. If they do well, the landlord can raise their rent, denying them profits and increasing rents. But! If a great new cafe opens across the street and the coffee shop owner goes broke, the landlord is in great shape, because they now have a vacant storefront they can rent, and they can charge extra for a prime location across the street from the hottest new coffee shop in town.
The "moral philosophers" that today's self-described capitalists claim to worship – Adam Smith, David Ricardo – hated rents. For them, profits were the moral way to get rich, because when capitalists chase profits, they necessarily chase the production of things that people want.
When rentiers chase rents, they do so at the expense of profits. Every dollar a capitalist pays in rent – licenses for IP, rent for a building, etc – is a dollar that can't be extracted in profit, and then reinvested in the production of more goods and services that society desires.
The "free markets" of Adam Smith weren't free from regulation, they were free from rents.
The moral philosophers' hatred of rents was really a hatred of feudalism. The industrial revolution wasn't merely (or even primarily) the triumph of new machines: rather, it was the triumph of profits over rent. For the industrial revolution to succeed, the feudal arrangement had to end. Capitalism is incompatible with hereditary lords receiving guaranteed rents from hereditary serfs who are legally obliged to work for them. Capitalism triumphed over feudalism when the serfs were turned off of the land (becoming the "free labor" who went to work in the textile mills) and the land itself was given over to sheep grazing (providing the wool for those same mills).
But that doesn't mean that the industrial revolution invented profits. Profits were to be found in feudal societies, wherever a wealthy person increased their wealth by investing in machines and hiring workers to use them. The thing that made feudalism feudal was how conflicts between rents and profits cashed out. For so long as the legal system elevated the claims of rentiers over the claims of capitalists, the society was feudal. Once the legal system gave priority to profit over rent, it became capitalist.
Capitalists hate capitalism. The engine of capitalism is insecurity. The successful capitalist is like the fastest gun in the old west: there's always a young gun out there looking to "disrupt" their fortune with a new invention, product, or organizational strategy that "creatively destroys" the successful businesses of the day and replaces them with new ones:
https://locusmag.com/2024/03/cory-doctorow-capitalists-hate-capitalism/
That's a hard way to live, with your every success serving as a blinking KICK ME sign visible to every ambitious person in the world. Precarity makes people miserable and nuts:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/19/make-them-afraid/#fear-is-their-mind-killer
So capitalists universally aspire to become rentiers and investors seek out companies that have a plan to extract rent. This is why Warren Buffett is so priapatic for companies with "moats and walls" – legal privileges and market structures that protect the business from competition and disruption:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/warren-buffett-explains-moat-principle-164442359.html
Feudal rents were mostly derived from land, but even in the feudal era, the king was known to reward loyal lickspittles with rents over ideas. The "patents royal" were the legally protected right to decide who could make or do certain things: for example, you might have a patent royal over the production of silver ribbon, and anyone who wanted to make a silver ribbon would have to pay for your permission. If you chose to grant that permission exclusively to one manufacturer, then no one else could make it, and you could charge a license fee to the manufacturer that accounted for nearly all their profit.
Today, rentiers are also interested in land. Bill Gates is the country's number one landowner, and in many towns, private equity landlords are snappinig up every single family home that hits the market and converting it to a badly maintained slum:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/05/22/koteswar-jay-gajavelli/#if-you-ever-go-to-houston
But the 21st Century's defining source of rent is "IP" – a controversial term that I use here to mean, "Any law or policy that allows a company to exert legal control over its competitors, critics and customers":
https://locusmag.com/2020/09/cory-doctorow-ip/
IP is in irreconcilable conflict with real property rights. Think of HP selling you a printer and wanting to decide which ink you use, or John Deere selling you a tractor and wanting to tell you who can fix it. Or, for that matter, Apple selling you a phone and dictating which software you are allowed to install on it.
Think of Unity, a company that makes tools for video-game makers, demanding a royalty from every game that is eventually sold, calling this "shared success":
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/03/not-feeling-lucky/#fundamental-laws-of-economics
Every time one of these conflicts ends with IP's triumph over real property rights, that is a notch in favor of calling the world we live in now "technofeudalist" rather than "technocapitalist":
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/28/cloudalists/#cloud-capital
Once you start to think of "IP" as "laws that let me control how other people use their real property," a lot of the seemingly incoherent fights over IP snap into place. This also goes a long way to explaining how otherwise sensible people can agree on expansions of IP to achieve some short-term goal, irrespective of the spillover harms from such a move. Hard cases make bad law, and hard IP cases make terrible law.
Five years ago, some anti-fascist counterdemonstrators hit on the clever idea of blaring top 40 music during neo-Nazi marches, on the theory that this would prevent Nazis from uploading videos of their marches to Youtube and other platforms, whose filters would block any footage that included copyrighted music:
https://memex.craphound.com/2019/07/23/clever-hack-that-will-end-badly-playing-copyrighted-music-during-nazis-rallies-so-they-cant-be-posted-to-youtube/
Thankfully, this didn't work, but not for lack of trying. And it might still work, if calls for beefing up video copyright filters are heeded. Cops all over the place are already blaring Taylor Swift songs and Disney tunes to prevent their interactions with the public from being uploaded:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/04/07/moral-hazard-of-filternets/#dmas
The same thinking that causes progressives to recklessly argue in favor of upload filters also causes them to demand that web scraping be treated as a copyright crime. They think they're creating a world where AI companies can't rip off their creation to train a model; they're actually creating a world where the Internet Archive can't capture JD Vance's embarrassing old podcast appearances or newspaper editorial boards' advocacy for positions they now recant:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/17/how-to-think-about-scraping/
It's not that Nazi marches are good, or that scraping can't be bad – it's just that advocating for the use of IP to address either is a cure that's not just worse than the disease – it's also not a cure.
A problem can be real, and still not be solvable with IP. I have enormous sympathy for gamers who rail against cheaters who use aftermarket hacks to improve their aim, see through buildings, or command other unfair advantages.
If you want to tell a stranger how they must configure their PC or console, IP ("any law that lets you control your competitors, critics or customers") is an obvious answer. But – as with other attempts to solve real problems with IP – this is a cure that is both worse than the disease, and also not a cure after all.
Back in 2002, Blizzard sued some hobbyists over a program called "bnetd." Bnetd was a program that provided a game-server you could connect to with the Blizzard games that you'd bought. It was created as an alternative to Battlenet, Blizzard's notoriously unreliable game-server software that left gamers frustrated and furious due to frequent outages:
https://www.eff.org/cases/blizzard-v-bnetd
To the public, Blizzard made several arguments against bnetd. They claimed that it encouraged piracy, because – unlike the official Battlenet servers – it didn't check whether the copies of Blizzard software that connected to it had a valid license key. Gamers didn't really care about that, but they did respond to another argument: that bnetd lacked the anti-cheat checking of Battlenet.
But that wasn't what Blizzard took to the court: in court, they argued that the hobbyists who made bnetd violated copyright law. Specifically, Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which bans "circumvention of access controls to copyrighted works." Basically, Blizzard argued that bnetd's authors violated the law because they used debuggers to examine the software they'd paid for, while it ran on their own computers, to figure out how to make a game server of their own.
Blizzard didn't sue bnetd's authors for pirating Blizzard software (they didn't – they'd paid for their copies). They didn't sue them for abetting other gamers' piracy. They certainly didn't sue them for making a cheat-friendly game-server.
Blizzard sued them for analyzing software they'd paid for, while it was running on their own computers.
Imagine if Walmart – one of the biggest book-retailers in America – had a policy that said that you could only shelve the books you bought at Walmart on shelves that you also bought at Walmart. Now imagine that Walmart successfully argued that measuring the books you bought from them and using those measurements to create your own compatible book-case violated their IP rights!
This is an outrageous triumph of IP rights over real property rights, and yet gamers vocally backed Blizzard in the early noughts, because gamers hate cheaters and because IP law is (correctly) understood as "the law that lets a company tell you how you can use your own real, physical property." Hard cases make bad law, hard IP cases make batshit law.
It's more than 20 years since bnetd, and cheating continues to serve as a Trojan horse to smuggle in batshit new IP laws. In Germany, Sony is suing the cheat-device maker Datel:
https://torrentfreak.com/sonys-ancient-lawsuit-vs-cheat-device-heads-in-right-direction-sonys-defeat-240705/
Sony argues that the Datel device – which rewrites the contents of a player's device's RAM, at the direction of that player – infringes copyright. Sony claims that the values that its programs write to your device's RAM chips are copyrighted works that it has created, and that altering that copyrighted work makes an unauthorized derivative work, which infringes its copyright.
Yes, this is batshit, and thankfully, Sony has been thwarted in court to date, but it is steaming ahead to the EU's highest court. If it succeeds, then it will open up every tool that modifies your computer at your direction to this kind of claim.
How bad can it be? Well, get this: the German publishing giant Axel Springer (owned by a monomaniacal Trumpist and Israel hardliner who has ordered journalists in his US news outlets to go easy on both) is suing Eyeo, makers of Adblock Plus, on the grounds that changing HTML to block an ad creates a "derivative work" of Axel Springer's web-pages:
https://torrentfreak.com/ad-blocking-infringes-copyright-ancient-sony-cheat-lawsuit-may-prove-pivotal-240729/
Axel Springer's filings cite the Sony/Datel case, using it to argue that their IP rights trump your property rights, and that you can only configure your web-browser, running on your computer, which you own, in ways that it approves of.
Axel Springer's war on browsers is a particularly pernicious maneuver, because browsers are the best example we have of internet software that serves as a "user agent." "User agent" is an old-timey engineering synonym for "browser" that reflects the browser's role: to go out onto the web on your behalf and bring back things for you, which it displays in the way you prefer:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/05/07/treacherous-computing/#rewilding-the-internet
Want to block flickering GIFs to forestall photosensitive epileptic servers? Ask your user agent to find and delete them. Want to shift colors into a gamut that accounts for your color-blindness? Ask your user-agent:
https://dankaminsky.com/2010/12/15/dankam/
Want to goose the font size and contrast so you can read the sadistic grey-on-white type that young designers use in the mistaken belief that black-on-white type is "hard on the eyes"? That's what Reader Mode is for:
https://frankgroeneveld.nl/2021/08/24/most-underused-browser-feature/
The foundation of any good digital relationship is a device that works for you, not for the people who own the servers you connect to. Even if they don't plan on screwing you over by directing your user agent to attack you on their behalf right now, the very existence of a facility in your technology that causes it to betray you, by design, is a moral hazard that inevitably results in your victimization:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/02/self-incrimination/#wei-bai-bai
"IP" ("a law that lets me control how you use your own property") is a tempting solution to every problem, but ultimately, IP ends up magnifying the power of the already powerful, in contests where your only hope of victory is having a user agent whose only loyalty is to you.
The monotonic, dangerous expansion of IP reflects the growing victory of rents over profits – income from owning things, rather than income from doing things. Everyday people may argue for IP in the belief that it will solve their immediate problems – with AI, or Nazis, or in-game cheats – but ultimately, the expansion of a law that limits how you can use your property (including your capital) to uses that don't threaten neofeudalists will doom you to technoserfdom.

Here they are, the Davion Cav lance. This is an insanely weird box with mechs from a big mishmash of sources and eras, but it does have extremely strong Davion pedigree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First up we have everyone's favorite barista guerilla-piloted shithead medium, the Legionaire. The LGN is a chassis with a very strong identity- it virtually always goes at some variation of 7/11 with reasonable armor and a single centerpiece fuckoff gun, generally a rotary autocannon. As a RAC mech it's pretty ok- it can stick that gun where it wants to with a concerning degree of accuracy and because it just has the one gun in the event of a jam it can peel off from a fight to go spin the round out without much FOMO on anything else. The mini does a good job of conveying thar this is a mech built around its primsry weapon system and I like the freakishly long monky arms, though the cockpit detailing is a bit doughy. The alternative barrel is a nice touch, allowing you to swap between the common RAC or I presume the large energy weapon seen on variants like the PPC-bearing 2K or the recent april fools RISC hyperlaser version. Shame we didn't get an Arrow-IV attachment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up we have our Mechwarrior machine, the Hellspawn. Affectionately, this thing is a piece of shit. Built to replace the Dervish, the HSN is another chassis with a strong identity- all Hellspawns have a ground speed of 6/9 with some number of jump jets between 5 and 8, most carry a payload of missiles and lasers to engage at a variety of ranges, and most carry some number of advanced electronics. Unfortunately due to the machinations of some Lyran spy at the production facility, it took until about the Jihad for GM to make a version of this thing that wasn't a germanium plated suicide booth with paper armor and a lot of unCASEed boom ready attempt to set an air speed record for fastest mechwarrior to reach the big mechbay in the sky.
Growsing about early teething troubles aside, I fucking *love* the way the Hellspawn looks. @laguzmage has brought up the idea of the 'Contraption' mech before and this thing is an alltime hall of fame doohickey. Asymmetrical, unbalanced, blocky, somehow simultaneously tall and short, it's the beautiful sort of ugly that only industrial equipment can be. There are a mid-double digit number of mechtechs and pilots who decided this thing was their wife in 3063 and spent a decade aggressively convincing GM to make a version that loved them as much as they loved it and they were right to do so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the exact opposite end of the industrial design spectrum, we have this Fast and Furious bastard. The Gunsmith is what happens when you put a limit on the size of a great power's army and they decide to compress an entire new chassis family's worth of R&D into exactly one fast idiot. The CH11-NG (there is only one model for this thing) moves as fast as a Dasher, is armed with more pulse lasers than a Wraith, and has enough reflective armor to approximate a Hunchback's belt when faced with the natural enemy of the Extremely Fast Dipshit, the pulse laser. As a light hunter and flanker it's murder par excellence, mostly kept in check by the completely unshielded engine that means a) it builds heat like a motherfucker and b) is mostly only allowed in games where you are committing crimes already because moving from standard tech to xtech is roughly the equivalent of getting drafted from your college basketball team into the fucking wizard wars.
Oh and did I mention the thing is unbearably cool? As a carryover from the good-ish years before grey monday, the Gunsmith is a thoroughly futuristic looking design with its sleak cockpit, downforce-inducing head, and angular limbs. It looks totally out of place next to the Mechwarrior IV brick mechs and the various mid-31st century TROs' chunky militarism. It looks like it managed to escape from an anime about racing mecha by breaking the light barrier with the help of a poorly understood particle. I have no clue how I'm gonna paint this thing
Tumblr media
Oh, and the Enforcer is here too, I guess. As far as I can tell this is the same Enforcer we've seen in the Hansen's/Urban Lance boxes, albeit with a new pose and updated molding to match Liya's newer standards. Its... fine? All of the existing enforcers are basically visually identical because the interesting revisions to the design were all shunted off into its derivatives, namely the Enforcer III. We could've gotten a different head sculpt maybe idk.

Business Process Outsourcing Market 2030 Key Growth Drivers, Challenges & Leading Key Players Review
The global business process outsourcing (BPO) market was valued at approximately USD 280.64 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.6% from 2024 to 2030. BPO refers to the practice of outsourcing various business operations and responsibilities, such as customer service, human resources, accounting, and IT support, to external service providers. This practice has gained immense popularity across industries due to the numerous benefits it offers, such as increased operational flexibility, cost reduction, and enhanced service quality.
One of the key reasons businesses are increasingly turning to BPO is the ability to reduce operational costs. By outsourcing non-core functions to third-party service providers, companies can focus their internal resources on their primary objectives, such as product development or customer engagement, thereby driving incremental value for their customers. Outsourcing also allows businesses to tap into specialized expertise, improving efficiency and service quality in areas like IT support, finance, and human resources.

E-Commerce Pricing Strategies Transforming Latin American Retail
Tumblr media
Latin America's eCommerce sector is growing quickly, particularly now that the epidemic has significantly changed customers' purchasing patterns. Before social distance became the norm, brick-and-mortar shopping ruled the day. However, eCommerce sales took off. Prior to the epidemic, Latin America's eCommerce penetration was much lower than that of the United States or other regions, particularly Asia and China. During the epidemic, eCommerce penetration more than doubled in Latin America, but the main distinction from other regions is that it never stopped expanding.
However, foreign businesspeople who want to enter this rapidly expanding sector must first comprehend its specifics. Bruck cautioned against viewing the Latin American eCommerce market as a single entity rather than the highly diversified collection of nations and people that it actually is. Due to the region's extreme fragmentation, each country in Latin America has a unique set of laws. Brazil offers an entirely different market than those in Mexico, Argentina, or Colombia, as well as distinct rules about how to invoice and import goods.
Tumblr media
Figure 1:
In 2022, as seen in Figure 1, there could be over 317.5 million e-commerce consumers in Latin America, according to Statista's Digital Market Outlook. This number would increase by 22% by 2027, reaching 387.7 million users throughout the region.
According to research by eMarketer, Latin America will have the "fastest-growing retail eCommerce market" by the end of 2020, with eCommerce sales increasing by 36.7% there compared to 31.8% in North America and 29.1% in Central and Eastern Europe.
Retailers have been actively striving to improve their omnichannel and eCommerce capabilities. They're investing in "buy online pickup in-store" (BOPIS), redesigning their websites, and becoming more and more sophisticated as they adopt the technology required to compete. Retailers must reconsider their pricing strategy in order to achieve this.
Latin America's adoption of eCommerce has resulted in a cultural change:
Latin American nations have a historical tradition of conducting business with retailers in person. Consumers are used to browsing store aisles, chatting with cashiers, and making purchases with coins and paper money. Latin American retailers and consumers are still getting used to the surge in eCommerce as a result of this and the fact that the market lags behind other areas in the adoption of cutting-edge technology.
Tumblr media
Figure 2:
Tumblr media
Figure 3:
Accelerating multichannel sales highlights the importance of sophisticated pricing:
In-store associate interactions with customers are based on a clear description of what a retailer's product pyramid is; however, this definition will need to be adjusted for eCommerce.
The objective is not to convey the breadth of products available in a given category; rather, it is to build unambiguous good-better-best links between online products so that consumers may evaluate their selections with clarity. What advantages does the cheapest product offer above what a customer can acquire by spending more money on the "best" choice available?
Here, pricing automation is crucial because it allows for the non-manual maintenance of appropriate price gaps for each item in the hierarchy. A "good" item shouldn't cost more than the "better" option. Retailers who don't manage their operations properly run the risk of communicating the wrong value message to their customers.
Important pricing aspects to keep in mind also include:
Price adjustments are made more frequently online than they are in physical stores because of eCommerce. Online intra-week price modifications are more feasible than manual adjustments made on the shelf. Retailers can regularly adjust prices to maintain competitiveness using AI and machine learning technology.
Pricing inconsistencies should be avoided so as not to send conflicting messages to customers and discourage them from purchasing more of a product. With the price-per-unit reduction in mind, for instance, a 48-ounce bottle of water should be priced "cheaper" than purchasing four 12-ounce bottles. Online shoppers may also be more aware if a product's price is more than they anticipated given the other available options if it is shown in a different colour. With the correct pricing optimisation technology, it is possible to ensure that prices online make sense to customers.
Factors for Latin American e-commerce pricing strategies:
eCommerce companies must implement effective pricing strategies that are adapted to the distinctive features of the region if they want to successfully enter the Latin American retail market. The following are some essential factors for Latin American e-commerce pricing strategies:
Localised Pricing: Recognise that the economic and purchasing power situations of the various Latin American nations vary widely. Adjust your product prices locally by basing them on each nation's economic factors, currency fluctuations, and consumer trends.
Flexible Payment Options: Offer flexible payment alternatives to accommodate regional tastes. Offering these options can increase conversion rates because Latin American buyers frequently choose instalment payments and other payment methods.
Consider Import Taxes and Duties: International e-commerce may be impacted by import taxes and customs fees. Be honest about these prices to prevent shocking clients and cart abandonment at the checkout.
Free or Reasonable Shipping: Latin American customers may have serious concerns about shipping prices. To encourage purchases, think about promoting free shipping or providing reasonable shipping costs.
Mobile-First Strategy: Latin America has a high rate of mobile usage. Make sure your eCommerce site is optimised for mobile use and has a pleasant purchasing experience on tablets and smartphones.
Local Collaborations: To optimise your supply chain and shorten delivery times, collaborate with regional logistics companies and fulfilment facilities. This can also make it easier for you to comply with local laws and customs procedures.
Localised Marketing: Tailor your marketing initiatives to connect with the unique cultural quirks and tastes of each Latin American nation. For the best connection with the target audience, use regional influencers, regional languages, and regional cultural references.
Seasonal and Regional Promotions: Take into account running seasonal or regional promotions to coincide with celebrations and holidays celebrated locally, which can boost revenue and improve clientele engagement.
Monitor Competitor Pricing: To stay competitive in the market, keep a careful eye on your rivals' pricing practises. Continually modify your prices in response to changing consumer and market conditions.
Data-Driven Approach: Apply data analytics to discover consumer preferences and behaviour. You can improve pricing and promotional efforts by having a thorough understanding of consumer purchasing trends.
Customer Service: In the local tongue, offer first-rate customer service. Respond to questions and issues as soon as possible to win over clients' trust and promote recurring sales.
Utilise Social Proof: In Latin America, social proof and word-of-mouth are significant influencers. Use client testimonials and reviews to establish credibility and persuade potential customers to make purchases.
Dynamics Pricing in Multichannel Sales:
The significance of dynamic pricing is becoming clear as Latin America's retail environment embraces multichannel commerce. Nowadays, customers move easily between retail and online shopping environments. To prevent customer confusion and foster trust, a consistent pricing policy across all touchpoints is required.
Price Consistency: Customers should experience consistent pricing both in real stores and across online platforms. Deviations can damage trust by causing misunderstanding. Retailers guarantee a smooth purchasing experience regardless of the channel of choice by matching prices.
Real-time Adjustments: Using technology to keep an eye on market trends and competition pricing in real time gives firms the flexibility to set prices quickly. To maximize profits and maintain competitiveness, dynamic pricing algorithms can take into account elements including demand, inventory levels, and rival prices.
Personalized Discounts and Offers: The ability to evaluate client data makes it possible to create customized offers and promotions. Promos that are specifically designed for each customer's prior behavior and preferences increase customer loyalty and increase conversion rates.
Using tech-driven approaches to succeed:
Technology-driven pricing methods are quickly taking the lead in the competitive world of Latin American e-commerce.
AI and Machine Learning: By putting AI and machine learning algorithms into practice, organizations can precisely predict demand trends. In consequence, this encourages sensible pricing and inventory management choices, lowering the likelihood of stockouts and overstock scenarios.
Geo-targeted Pricing: By using geographic segmentation, organizations can set pricing that takes into account local competition, regional demand, and cost factors. With this strategy, pricing is guaranteed to be acceptable to neighborhood customers while maximizing profitability.
A/B Testing: Pricing strategies can be tested in real-time due to the dynamic nature of e-commerce. Finding the best pricing strategy for each market requires A/B testing various price points, discount schemes, and payment methods.
Conclusion:
A one-size-fits-all pricing model will not work for businesses as Latin America continues to embrace the e-commerce revolution. Success requires a thorough awareness of the subtleties in economic, cultural, and consumer behavior. Retailers may fully realize the potential of the Latin American retail market by implementing dynamic pricing models that include multichannel consistency and make use of technology. Those who utilize the power of smart pricing will be best positioned to prosper in this changing environment as competition heats up.

LMAO THIS IS ACTUALLY TERRIFYING!?!
Okay so, Barry is already a smart person. Even before his powers he solved a lot of cold cases. It's in his making that he needs to take apart a problem and solve it.
His biggest enemy used to be literally the time. With every passing second he used to feel he was loosing something.
THEN THE FUCKER WENT AND GOT HIMSELF SUPER SPEED AS A POWER?!?
Life is not fair and Central City crooks knows it.
At least in Gotham people have a chance to do crime. Yeah, when they got caught they will probably say goodbye to some of their bones inside their body but at least they can have something! Batman doesn't have super speed, now that's a scary thought-
FUCK YOU MEAN FLASH IS NOW STUDYING UNDER THE BAT?!?
In central city most crooks just tired to do subtle crimes, not to get attention and fuck off safely.
Even Rogues are in the know! They create chaos and at the other end of the city another bank gets robbed. They don't get a lot but at least it's something!
Then the incident happened.
Someone, till this day no one knows which stupid fuck caused this, managed to stop Flashes powers. Kid Flash and the Flash on the ground, tied up in a weird machine.
Flash, being already a smart person, and sealed with this kind of bullshit everyday got them out, but their powers hadn't get the memo yet. The crooks around them were so excited! They thought they could kill them off!
Then Kid Flash, casually, roundhouse kicked someone's jaw off their sockets. Then everyone remembered. Who was their teammates. As Kid Flash wiped the floor with 8 adult man, with a smile on his face, Flash stood alone, with a calculating rule.
"Wait wait wait, stop! Stop! What are those moves, kid?!?"
"My friend Rob showed me :D I get bored easy ¯\_( ツ )_/¯"
"Rob? Who the fuck is rob- Oh my god he is talking about the Robin"
They had a taste then. A Flash with Bat's training. The simplest one.
Flash apperaintly wanted an entire fucking feast!
A few months later, Captain Cold used a new gun. It somehow freeze Flash's power. No one knows how.
"Hah! I got you know, Flash! What are you going to do now that you have no power-" and a punch to face.
He collapses.
Flash slowly turns with a smile.
"Finally a chance to test what Bat showed me!"
He didn't get the chance. Everyone instantly gave up.
"Man... I was excited to show my new training with Wonder and Super to Bat :/"
Captain Cold apologized to Rogues and criminal community with a youtube video from the prison.
Central City villains are shitting bricks, because fuck you mean fastest man alive is learning from the big three??
Nightmare scenario, literally. At least Barry seems to get the power in intimidation!
But imagining a speedster with Batman level combat training is wild.
Thawne at the back is now trying to learn Karate.
barry doing actual combat training that isn't just like, a weekend with oliver. barry doing combat training with bruce and the batfam because it's not like he can't run down to gotham for regular sessions so...why not? barry learning how to fight other superpowered beings from bruce, who has no powers, and then sparring with clark and diana to put that training to use.
barry ending up with the weirdest goddamn mismatch of styles that make him formidable even when his powers are dampened! barry getting kind of adopted into the batfam because hey, he's another vigilante orphan trouble magnet, who cares if he's an adult. barry getting weapons training from red hood who is just happy someone else can use a goddamn gun.
please imagine some poor fuckin' villain who is SO PROUD they caught the flash. they get power dampening cuffs on him. he manages to escape anyway, and one of their goons FLIPS OUT because they know a goddamn batman protege when they see one and they are NOT STICKING AROUND FOR THIS.

Spring Break Of '86 (4)
Tumblr media
Eddie Munson x Reader
Warning(s): Mature; swearing; violence
Summary: Instead of enjoying a lavish spring break with your college friends, you were off running around Hawkins dodging the police with Eddie Munson, your ex.
Word Count: 2.0k
++++
You were, frankly, shitting bricks as you sat in a makeshift interrogation room, which was just a crudely pitched-up tent. You began to pick at your nails as you waited for the onslaught of questions from the new police chief.
You had heard about Jim Hopper while you were away, and you did feel sad about the man's passing. He had caught you and Eddie quite a few times back in the day making out in places you weren't supposed to, but he always let you off with a warning.
"How do you know Eddie Munson?" he asked, keeping a watchful eye on your face. Taking a deep breath, you placed your hands under your thighs and made eye contact with the exhausted Officer.
"We dated for over four years back when we were sophomores together." He had refused to look anywhere else, but your visage as his hand rested on top of a manilla envelope. You could see the bags under his eyes as he blinked a few times too many to stay focused.
"From what I heard from one of my officers, the two of you were still dating?"
"Well, I lied. I thought it would be the fastest way to get in and grab the wallet I had left in his possession yesterday."
"So you were with him yesterday? Did you spend the night?" You were quickly irritated; you were confused as to why they were interested in your past relationship with the man.
"Yes, I was with him yesterday, and no, I didn't spend the night. Why would I sleep with my ex, who broke up with me through a letter?" You pinched the bridge of your nose, not understanding where all this was going.
"Your boyfriend–"
"Ex-boyfriend." He frowned deeply at the interruption as you gave him an apologetic smile and began to berate yourself in your head for having loose lips in a situation like this.
"Eddie Munson is our lead suspect for murder. A girl named Chrissy Cunningham was found dead in his trailer by his uncle Wayne Munson." He opened the envelope and pushed a picture towards you.
The sight was horrific. The girl looked disfigured as her limbs were broken and twisted around, while her eyes were sunken deep into the sockets of her face. You loved horror movies, and very rarely did you get scared of the dead bodies on the screen; however, this was real and seeing someone you knew was causing your stomach to twist in knots.
Willing yourself to tear your eyes away from the graphic images to met with the Officer's brown ones.
"You really believe that Eddie Munson did this? No fucking way, Eddie could never and would never." You slammed your hands on the table in protest once his words had sunk in. "Eddie Munson is a humongous nerd, not a psychopathic killing machine," you huffed out.
His frown somehow grew deeper. "Well, can you explain why she was in his trailer last night? And how she is no longer living?"
"First of all, it's a mobile home, not a trailer. And second of all, she was probably buying drugs? Eddie is kind of known for selling at fair prices." You took another peek at the photos and grimaced. It was sad to see a girl who was always smiling in the halls, now twisted and lifeless.
"Besides, Eddie wouldn't have the physical or mental strength to snap her bones in such a way. Like he is a whopping 175 pounds max, and from the looks of it, Chrissy could probably manhandle him."
The Officer wasn't convinced and continued questioning you for a good portion of an hour. You were honest and maybe a bit too blunt, but you were over it! Having been held at gunpoint with no explanation and then, on top of that, being illegally held against your will without a lawyer was really rubbing you the wrong way.
"If you have any leads on where Eddie may be hiding, let us know," he said, finally standing up and leading you out of the stuffy tent. You gave him a half-hearted sure and began to fast walk your way back to where your brother had parked.
He quickly got out of the car and tried to ask you what had happened, but you only shoved him back in the vehicle before taking the keys. As you began to drive off towards the direction of Hank's, you could clearly see a police car began to trail after you.
"Listen, Matty, they think that Eddie killed Chrissy Cunningham, and they also think that I know where he is," you explained, turning the volume down to be heard over the static music. "What! Eddie could never in a million years kill someone, Hell! He can't even kill a spider without getting teary-eyed," he said, waving his arms around to get his point across.
"Anyone who knows Eddie knows that he didn't kill her, but it still doesn't look good for him since she was found dead and alone." You took a right and noticed that the police car also had not even a few seconds after you.
"So, do you know where Eddie is?" he asked. You reached over and turned the music up loud so it could drown out your voices. You began to pretend to rock out, which confused your brother, but once you gave him a little shove, he began to do the same.
"I do, but I won't be able to look for him if we continue to be stalked by cops. Listen, we're going to do everything we promised mom, and once we get home, we'll discuss this more in the privacy of our rooms," you promised.
He closed his eyes and began to headbang, secretly letting you know he understood. You reached over and turned the music down once again as you finally pulled into Hank's parking lot.
You were given an estimation of two days before your truck would be ready after you apologized to the tow truck driver for leaving him waiting, but once he saw a cop car park nearby, he understood.
"So…"
"So?" briefly, looking at your brother before turning back to the road head. "Eddie's still your boyfriend?"
"What–"
"You told the cop from earlier that Eddie was your boyfriend, and it wasn't in the past tense," he said, laughing at how your eyes widened. You felt yourself become tongue-tied as your brother continued to tease you.
"Shut up, Matty. I did it to get my stupid wallet, which I still didn't get since his van wasn't even there!" You began to go back and forth until you had finally arrived at Family Video. Before you could take the keys out of the ignition, you made Matty promise not to bring up Eddie again until you were somewhere private.

After giving your mom her keys back and a mini-lecture for your lateness, you finally descended the stairs to the basement, which you had claimed as your bedroom. Just as you sat down, you heard the familiar sounds of your secret knock that you and your siblings shared.
You gave a short whistle as their signal to come in. You were surprised that Matty wasn't alone but accompanied by his twin. Just as Mary walked in, she locked the door and quickly found a spot to sit.
Her eyes were bloodshot, and she continued to sniffle. You frowned and opened your arms, letting her decide if she wanted to get comforted or not. It didn't take long before she threw herself into your awaiting arms.
She began to sob as you cradled her to your chest. It was hardly a secret that you babied your siblings, probably worse than your parents, but you, on the other hand, knew when you were smothering them.
You rubbed her back and held her close as her tears began to soak up your shirt. Matty grew teary-eyed and held her hand that wasn't clutching your shirt in a death grip. Chrissy happened to be one of her closest friends despite being two years ahead of her. She looked up to her and even wanted to be like her at one point in time.
"I know, I know it hurts." You whispered words of comfort as you waited for the floodgates to slow down just the slightest bit. It took a while, but soon her weeping turned to the occasional hiccup. She took a deep breath and slowly detached herself from you, but she still sat close.
"Eddie couldn't have killed her," she whispered, wiping her tears with her sleeves. You reached over and began to clean her face with your shirt. You even wiped away a little collection of snot that built up in the corner of her nose, which caused her to make a face.
"I'm glad we're all on the same page," you whispered. Even though you were in the most secluded space in the house, you still didn't want anyone other than the three of you to hear what you were discussing about your next move.
Eddie had known them since they were in their second year of middle school. He was friendly and caring and treated them more than just his partner's siblings but as siblings of his own. He drove Mary to competitions on the off chance that your father couldn't, and he even taught Matty how to be a D&D wiz, despite his low level. He never stopped treating them any differently once the two of you had broken up.
They saw Eddie as more than what the town had labeled him, and you were proud that they loved him just like you d̶o̶ did.
You smiled and kissed the crown of her head. "Listen, I think I know where he is, but I need you guys to stall." They both nodded as you began to go into detail about your plan.
"Our house is definitely being watched by cops right now, so I'm going to have to use our secret entrance to get out of here. I just need you two to smother our parents with affection, like rub it in why you're their favorites," you joked. Mary punched you in the arm while Matty just rolled his eyes. It wasn't a secret to anyone how much they were adored compared to you.
"But I'm serious, guys, don't let them know that I'm gone, do whatever it takes. Please, for Eddie?" You held your pinkie out towards them. They nodded simultaneously and linked their pinkies with yours.
"For, Eddie!"
+++
Your body was buzzing as you sat at dinner with your family. You just wanted to leave, but your mother would've torn the town apart looking for you if you didn't join them. You would've eaten faster, but your parents would go on an hour-long tangent about table manners, so you kept a good pace. Thanking your mother for dinner, you let the table occupants know that you were exhausted and would be turning in for the night.
Once out of sight, you lept down the stairs to your room and locked the door. You began to pack a small bag filled with essentials that you may need. A tiny medkit, your flask that was a little less than half full, a rag, a flashlight, a water bottle, and a bag of chips. You grabbed a jacket and tied it around your waist, and began to make your way to a crawlspace hidden behind a painting Eddie had made for you.
As you lifted the painting off the wall, you quickly got up and snagged your walkman with its headphones and a few tapes before stuffing them in the bag. Flicking the lights off, you began to move back to the open vent. It was still bright outside despite it being a little past six.
Shoving your bag into the crawlspace, you placed the vent on top of your bag before scooting in. You held the painting gently and carefully hooked it onto the nail that stuck out of the wall. You maneuvered the vent back into place and pulled out your flashlight. You had to hold the device between your teeth as you began to crawl towards your destination.
It didn't take long for you to find the hatch and lift the rusted doors open. Getting up, you looked around to ensure the coast was clear before lugging yourself out. Closing the gates behind you, you glanced around to ensure that you were truly alone in the woods before heading towards Reefer Rick's house.
You had been there quite a few times; however, it was going to be a five-mile trek by foot to get there, and you were hoping that Axel Rose's vocals would distract you for the time being.

For some reason BirdFlash gives me the look like nerds but are actually jocks vibe while JayRoy are the look like jocks but are actually nerds vibe. TimKon is the classical jock + nerd and since this came to my mind I can't unsee
Tumblr media
At first sight, birdflash gives off STRONG nerd vibes. wally’s actually known throughout the school for his science achievements, trophies, and awards. you don’t stand a chance against him in the science fair, don’t even try. and dick went to a fancy rich prep school where he scored some of their highest grades. just because he doesn’t like school doesn’t mean he isn’t good at it. and whenever they see each other in civvies, wally’s chattering on about this experiment he’s doing for fun and it seems like dick actually understands what he’s talking about, not just nodding along. and with a single visit to wally’s school, he revolutionized the tech department with a few careless suggestions. but really, that’s just their individual interests. wally might like science, but his entire life is running. he trains and trains, both with and without the speedforce. along with being trapped in that thing for years, wally’s pretty sure the reason he’s the fastest speedster is because of his strict track and cross-country training. and no matter what the circumstances, dick’s always happiest when he’s in the air. he possesses a natural athleticism that leaves others in awe along with skills finely honed to perfection for years that very few others could even hope to achieve. the two of them are long and lean and strong, and are in complete control over their bodies. they play different sports for fun, give each other leg warmers, socks, and water bottles for holidays, and go on early morning runs. the two of them are sports culture to the max (i actually made a post about that here)
now jayroy give off just the jock vibe, maybe even running into punk territory. first of all, lets get this out of the way: BICEPS. two of the biggest pairs of guns you’ll ever see, i swear. roy’s got a cocky smirk and he wears threadbare tank tops with dumb slogans on them and he never takes that trucker hat off. he makes his way into the basketball game going on at the courts on the bad side of town with a laugh. he squares up his fists for a fight any time there’s a hint of action. his nose is crooked from all the times its been broken and reset. not to mention his tattoos. and yes, roy loves lian with his entire heart and cares for her with everything he has, but that doesn’t change the fact that he was a teenager. now jason, jason just looks the part. he’s huge, and built like a goddamn brick wall. those muscles gotta be used for something, right? he’s always wearing those fingerless gloves, but his knuckles are constantly bruised anyway. you stop and take a double take anytime you see him when his lip isn’t split. almost everyone’s seen him with a gun. but he also spends his free time reading literary classics. his bookshelf is crammed full of old paperbacks, with everything from Frankenstein to Wuthering Heights to Farenheight 459 to The Importance of Being Earnest. The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy is a guilty pleasure of his. And he’s not just flipping through them either. no, he reads them. poking plot holes and other criticisms faster than a bullet. character analyzations sharper than his jawline. a lecture about the problem with many contemporary and modern novels longer than his dick. yea, jason devours those novels, and can tell you about all of them. as for roy, he’s inventive. always tinkering, always fiddling with a piece of tech, always creating. whether it be a new set of trick arrows or a coffee machine that spits out poison darts of a toaster that has 56 settings or a goddamn bazooka. he loves building stuff with his own two hands, a messy bun on his head, grease on his face, goggles shoved over his eyes as whatever he’s making sparks to life in his hands, bested only by the strike of pure creative passion in his eyes. textbook definition mechanic and geek, and we love him for it.
timkon is definitely the classic jock + nerd pairing. the only problem is that they always switch which is which. kon drapes his spiked leather jacket over tim’s shoulders when he’s cold, and later on at football games, tim cheers kon on wearing kon’s varsity jacket. but tim dropped out of high school because he has “better things to do” while kon just genuinely enjoys learning about stuff. kon does need help with his homework, so he calls tim, who always gives kon the math formulas he forgot the empirical formula of a compund that he doesn’t feel like calculating while simulaneously working on a couple other cases (he bounces his theories for a certain homicide off kon). but half of tim’s closet is made of sports jerseys for his favourite teams that he wears completely unironically even though they practically dwarf him, and he drags kon to all of their games while cheering and hollering, screaming at the tv when he can’t be there live,,,,and it’s not just one sport,,,,,nooo he’s got a good many he’s completely emotionally invested in. tim steals kon’s shirts so often that he just starts giving them to him, and dear god there’s almost nothing kon loves more than seeing tim wearing his clothes, looking tiny and misleadingly delicate and his. but tim carries around a skateboard and uses it practically 24/7, and one afternoon was spent teaching kon how to use the thing, including lots of laughing and falling over and steadying hands on waists, before a break at an ice cream parlour was followed by a sugary kiss. so yea, timkon is jock + nerd culture, with both of them being the jock and the nerd (also sorry anon i know you were thinking of kon being the jock and tim being the nerd, and honestly that’s how i usually view it too, its just this particular idea popped into my head and i had to write it) (also for timkon, i usually go for skate culture, and my hc for that is here)
ok wow this got a lot longer than i expected. i was shooting for a couple lines about my ships, and ended up with a whole new hc list instead. ooooof. tag list: @comicsandhoney @birdy-bat-writes @astroherogirl @anothertimdrakestan

running into adultrio for the first time (x female reader) (1/3)
HISOKA You were slightly out of breath, racing through the streets of York New City. The night wind was cold and relentless against your skin, but you didn’t care, running past lit buildings and alleyways for signs of life. You didn’t know what to be afraid of - the lack of voices around you or the rampant gunfire in the near distance around the cemetery building. The shots had started 10 minutes ago while you were walking on your way home, and immediately your instincts flared into a sharp frenzy. A fight was breaking out at the annual underground auction, and there were nen users involved. Extremely powerful ones. You could almost feel the destruction and death a few blocks away like a tremor along your spine. At once, you sprinted towards the scene, hoping to extricate innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. With your abilities, you knew you could bring them out safely and even put up a good fight. Earlier you’d already saved several distraught families and young couples. Just a few blocks more and it’ll be clear, you thought to yourself as you turned down another deserted street. “I’LL KILL Y-!” Gunfire resounded towards your left and you heard a nearby guttural yell cut short into a gurgle. You stopped short and came upon a darkened alley. At your feet, a cluster of five men in black suits lay at in a tangled heap. Their machine guns strewn over the pavement, and their throats slit cleanly, dripping fresh blood. Mafia, you ascertained the situation, they can no longer be saved. You had seen many dead bodies before, hell you had to kill even though you tried hard not to, and this barely fazed you. Yet something about this evoked a tension in your stomach, what was in the shadows - “Oya oya,” a silky voice said. “What do we have here, a visitor?” You felt your whole body switching to a defensive stance, eyes straining to pierce the dark in front of you. Whoever this was, their zetsu was impeccable. Then, he emerged, walking at a threateningly slow pace, his golden eyes trained on yours. One hand on his chin, the other holding a poker card. His hair combed back, almost as red as the blood he had just spilt. He’s someone to be especially careful of, you instincts told you.  Then, so swift it was almost a blur, a poker card sliced through the air in front of you. You reacted instantly, moving out of the way as you felt the razor edge of the card graze your cheek. His golden eyes widened and before you could find your footing, he appeared to your right, his left arm throwing one of the fastest punches you had ever been dealt - in a split second you did a backward flip, crouching low before sending a rapid kick to his face - his arm stopped your assault - but his gaze doubled in intensity, golden orbs flashing with surprise and burning with (was this?) intrigue. Suddenly, your body flew and you felt the impact of slamming into a brick wall; the back of your head throbbed with a dull ache, and your right hand and foot felt affixed to the wall by an invisible shackle. Tch, you clicked your tongue, glaring straight at him. From your experience, you didn’t need to use gyo to know that you were pinned to the wall with his nen. A transmuter. His eyes squinted into thin slits as he walked closer and closer. Unable to move, both of you were almost pressed together, his muscular frame cornering yours into the wall. Your free hand aimed for his throat, but he was quick to hold you down. You felt his strength against your wrists, before his long, sharp fingers tilted your chin to face him. “And who might you be...You’re not a run of the mill fighter, are you?” he purred, eyes still fixed on you. He was unbearably perceptive. You felt your insides lurch a little. This was a bad position to be in, how did you even end up running into someone like him, of all people? Regardless, you refused to let your building tension show, gazing back at him in silence and feigned indifference. Whether it was from the heat of his body impossibly close to yours, or the short sparring session you both had, you felt a bead of sweat trickle down your temple, as if betraying your thoughts. His eyes darted to the side and caught sight of it, his mouth pulling into a slight smirk. “Oh well... since you’re being uncooperative,” he mused. With you imprisoned beneath his gaze and arm, you felt his other hand reach into your pockets. “What are you doing,” you hissed. feeling anger rise into your throat. He fiddled with your phone, pressing what seemed to be a series of numbers or letters. Then he slipped your phone back where it belonged, before leaning into you once more, this time even closer to the point where he could easily whisper into your ear. You bristled at his cool breath, soft but with almost serpentine-like menace and lust burning into your skin. “I wish I could prolong this moment, but I have a job to do.” He stood back up, golden orbs glinting in the dim streetlights, before suddenly pulling away. Walking towards the cemetery building, he called back over his shoulder. “The nen would dissipate in about 30 minutes, so don’t worry.” Tch, you clicked in irritation again as you glared at his receding figure in the darkness.
“And oh, thank you for giving me your number.”  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: this was my first time ever writing a fic-like thing omg!! feels strange but oddly satisfying~ i’ve always liked to imagine (non-sexual) scenarios of a female protagonist running into the adultrio and who then catches their attention somehow, which can snowball into a longer narrative. I initially wanted to include Illumi and Chrollo in this post but I ended up writing quite a bit, so I will do another two separate posts I guess :~)
